  1. +1 Put a gopro and a light in there to film what's happening on the screen. https://www.canonrumors.com/canon-eos-r5-firmware-update-coming-soon-raw-light-to-be-added-cr2/ Come on Canon let's do it. C-LOG 3, light raw and remove your BS soft limitation so we can all be happy.
  2. Canonrumors just posted an article finishing with « As pointed out by EOSHD, why does not of this matter when recording externally? I and others think it’s probably some kind of software limit.» I like that more sites point that out as it seems most of the usual sites like Dpreview are very very shy in pointing out what Canon did here.
  3. Who cares about a workaround for 4K24p?? Every camera does that since a long time. There is no workaround for 4K60p and 120p, recording externally is not option otherwise we would use proper cine camera if weight and size wasn't an issue. I am fine working with time limitations to get those heat producing features (like 15min max in 4K120) as long as taking stills / be in the menus do not lower those limitations and as long as the camera recovers similarly to any other camera on the market, and not in 2+ hours like it seems to be the case. For me it has never been about the initial time recording limitation, which are understandable, but about the recovery time and the camera heating by itself when on. The latter is what makes the camera barely usable for any usage and could have EASILY been avoided by Canon technically as proven by competitors. It's likely that they did make it more thermally efficient by purpose / and or put software limitation. If they actually did their best, which I do not believe a second, then they should fire the whole company (with managers first) and start from 0 or stick with making printers. What a joke. I went from "amazing, finally" when announced to "still great" when we heard about recording limitations to "WTF is this BS" when we found out that the camera is actually almost unusable for video due to the above. On top of that, my camera ordered day 1 still did not ship with no date in sight. That's actually probably a good thing since if Canon doesn't fix this I am afraid my testing period will very likely end up with a return.
  4. Let’s do a petition on change.org for a fix from Canon.
  5. Clearly all of this smells BS from Canon with software limit. - Camera is cold to the touch and colder than A7SIII after overheating (as measured with a thermometer gun). - You can't shoot HQ video after browsing menus and shooting a few stills. - Removing the memory card when external recording allows for hours of recording. Put that memory card in the body, and it's 45 min even though the card is inactive. - Overheating time is basically the same inside a house with AC and outside under the sun with high temps (unlike the A7S III and any other camera in the world). You don't have to be an engineer (which I am) to see what Canon did right there. I hope they fix their mess. This camera will never be perfect (you can always expect overheating with 8K and 4K120p without active or good passive cooling) for people who need very long continuous recording. But it can be perfect for the majority of us who need a do it all hybrid, and have the ability to take several short 4K120p clips per hour, with still shooting in between. If they don't make it right hybrid shooters are in for another couple of year of waiting (for those who wanted a complete package of at least 4K60P 10 bits + IBIS + great AF + great stills + FF in a small package).
  6. I preordered on day 1 on Focus Camera in the US. I never received the R5 and today August 3, Focus Camera confirms me they did not even receive any unit, and they do not know when they will. What an absolute bullshit. That’s so frustrating. And it’s even more frustrating to think about that A7SIII and its ridiculous 12mpx, plus I was so happy to use a Canon body again. Just make it right Canon, correct the issue and ship the bodies. Communicate to customers god damn it.
  7. So we can get the worst AF in the industry? Thanks but no thanks. Canon should just put a passive cooling system à la A7S which is much easier for them to do than for Panasonic to have a great AF. Unfortunately for some weird reasons Canon decided not to cool the R5. Pretty sure someone at top management said « well at least that recording limitation will differentiate with our Cinema line. »
  8. Could also say Canon puts Sony to shame with an IBIS so much better it looks like 5y technology difference, with much better body and ergonomics, no crop in 4K120, an more importantly actual stills capability (VS 12mpx, it’s not 1990). Everything is relative. We all have different needs. Neither products are bad in this case. Except the overheating if indeed the R5 can’t record a video after 30 stills (I still have a hard time believing that) and that Canon doesn’t do anything about it.
  9. https://www.canonrumors.com/whats-next-for-the-canon-eos-r5-and-canon-eos-r6/ your report and this article. All seems to point to a recall / hardware fix. They completely screwed the launch, but that’s good news. Because that means the camera which was going to be the perfect hybrid and that ended up being wasted due to overheating will indeed maybe become perfect if they fix it.
  10. Well 2 videos now say outside it shuts down before the R5, and that’s in 24p in the last video. The R5 has a usable 24p mode with unlimited recording. Wait a minute, the A7S III shuts down in 23 min when recording in 85F weather, in 24P?! When the Canon can record unlimited line skipped 4K24p, an more time in 4K24P HQ? I am waiting for Andrew’s post about suing Sony. Joke appart, I still think that overall the Sony will be more usable for people who need to shoot longer videos: it seems the Sony recovers from over heating in minutes and has no problem in interior scenarios For people like me who do not need longer recording time (interviews, production...) the question is still open.
  11. From all the videos published so far it seems pretty obvious that overall the A7SIII will perform better with overheating but can still overheat especially in 4K120P. I do not think it will be an issue for most in real world. The R5 is where the big question stands, will it be usable for most (we already know it won't work for productions or people needing long recording). If the R5 proves to be usable (I ordered day 1 and will report my tests) that's the keeper for me. I am 60% photo 40% video at the moment so those 45mpx are important. Also the IBIS is world appart.
  12. The A7S blows the R5 in low light (expected) The R5 beating the A7S in rolling shutter? I did not expect that. That IBIS comparison though... Sony is years behind on that. And the R5 beating the Sony in overheating outside? Sounds almost weird..!
  13. Tony Northrup latest videos shows direct comparison of footage between R6 and A7S in 4K60p. The R6 is cleaner and sharper, which is mind blowing at $1000 less. Also a much better photo tool at 20mpx vs 12mpx.
  14. Well, pixel shift is very specific but quad bayer with 48mpx would have been amazing, they probably don’t allow that mode because it would kill A7R IV sales. A shame, because Sony does not have a high mpx camera with full video specs. As far as the codecs, it’s nice indeed to have many option. The fact that it’s H.264 100MB/s for a 10bit422 at 4K120p is an absolute joke though. Who on earth thought keeping 100Mbps like for 4K24 but with 120p and 10bit on top of it was a good idea? On the other side Canon gives us excessively high Mbps option. Is it that hard to give us 10 bit 420 H265 400Mbps/s and a similar 422 option for when we get compatible computers? You know something that combines good quality while being compatible with computers while working with SD cards...
  15. Well at 3:58 in the BH video, you can see for the Sony 422 10 bits or 420 8 bits (like the Canon). Not sure where the option to have h.264 is but maybe it’s there we will know soon enough. But then if h264, bitrate clearly is not enough. From the same video it seems 10 bit 422 4K120 is 100MB which is already low in h265, and incredibly low for h264. Again we will know soon enough.
  16. You are wrong. Zcam is h265 10 bit 420, not 422. Other people posting here having no problem editing either speak about h264 10 bit 422 or h265 10 bit 420. 10 bit 422 H265 IS NOT supported by ANY graphic card on the market today. 10 bit 420 and 10 bit 444 are, not 422. Sony has H265 10 bit 422 in the A7S and thus it will be hard to edit even on a $20K Mac Pro. Only the iPad work well for it. All Apple Sillicon upcoming computers will work well for that usage too. As I said days ago here on the forum, before the new video from Max, we are screwed for the moment with 10 bit 422 H265. It does not matter which camera you are using. Transcode or record externally are the only options which both suck hard. I have an iPad Pro on which I am typing this message, but I do not consider this an option for video editing.
  17. That’s gonna be the same on any 10 bit 422 camera. That’s why Fuji went 420. Current PC hardware supports well h265 10bit 420 But not 422. So anything with this will be a nightmare to edit. As for “incredibly soft 4k120p” we probably didn’t see the same footage. Also, it’s already confirmed the 4K120 on the Sony will be limited by heat. I agree on the file size. One other thing to mention is 4K120p records audio on the Sony, no audio on the Canon.
  18. So 30min before overheating in 4k120p and 1.1 crop. Should we sue Sony? Lol. Joke appart I like that the 4K60p is good to go without overheating and that it’s full pixel readout and doesn’t need crazy expensive memory cards. However 12mpx for stills is not enough for me, so I would have to keep my A7III. Not as good as having everything in one with the Canon. Not to mention poor IBIS. Yet if the Canon cannot record a min of video after you shoot 30 pics.... So what I am gonna do is I’ll keep my R5 order, test it in my real world usage and if it’s unusable I’ll return it and if it ends up being fine I’ll happily keep it. It’s perfect cause it’s summer now. If I can shoot pictures and small 20 seconds 4K120p clips for 3H straight outside then it’s a go. If not then I guess it’s gonna be another 5 years before I get my dream camera lol.
  19. Menu just leaked, fully redesigned and touch capable
  20. You are quoting my messages out of context days appart.... good for you. I have no pbm assuming the fact that I change my mind according to the new information coming in. Neither you and I tested the camera so we for now rely on others. 15-20min max continuous recording in 4K120P was totally acceptable to me. The new information saying you cannot record 1 second after shooting 30 pictures is not acceptable. My first comment, based on your comment with information that was available at the time of posting and with the unrelevant exemples you posted is still 100% valid. BTW you are the champion of flip flopping, how many times did I read an article here on EOS HD saying a camera is pure garebage, then you actually buy it use it and love it lol. And you know what that’s fine. As we say in French, only dumb people never change their mind. 🙂
  21. I have to admit I was fine with recording only 15 min STRAIGHT of 4K120p, but not being able to record 1sec after 1 hour shooting still, or not being able to record more than 15 x 1min clips in a single day becomes from « ok I’ll deal with it » to « what the actual fuck?? »
  22. The exemples in your article are absolutely pointless. You say the overheating scandale is like if a car would overheat and stops on the highway so you compare features that exist in any competition product for dozens of year (a car going on the highway, all cars can do that) with a ground breaking features of the R5 that exist nowhere on the market. No camera this size and price in the world today shoots 4K120P full frame 10 bit 422. It’s unheard off. A7RIV, the Sony flagship, does not overheat because its only video mode is the R5 normal 4K mode, which doesn’t overheat at all, yet on top the Canon has 10 bits and still beats BY FAR the A7RIV with just the non overheating normal 4K mode (10 bits, better ibis, better colors, better ergonomics). So to take your exemple, it’s like having the best car on the market on most points, and have an extra bonus boost mode that gives you 0-100kmh in one second but only usable for 20min. Guess what? It exists and it’s called Ludicrous mode on tesla, a $20K option and that overheats the car after a few accelerations.... Nobody sued Tesla and people paid for that option on the Model S.
  23. DEALBREAKER ALERT. A 15000$ 2020 MAC PRO cannot play back in real time the R5 footage. Does not matter Premiere Pro Resolve, FCPX. Nothing works even 4K30p won’t play in a high end 2020 MacbookPro. The reason which he does not say in his video but I know is 422. HVEC is supported by latest hardware but not HVEC 422 so it’s like at the beginning of the HVEC codec when hardware acceleration was not supported. Your 15K computer cannot edit the footage, but within a year or 2 when computers support 10 bit 422 HVEC correctly a 1000$ laptop will edit it better than your MacPro. In the meantime, we are screwed.
  24. Hopefully 4K120p is 10 bit internal
