  1. I'm wondering why these charges aren't being handled via the US Federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), or the office of the NY Attorney General (which dictates guidelines regarding shift break and mealtime requirements.) The fact that the United Steelworkers Union is already involved suggests this is more about conventional Big Union pushing its own agenda than it is about anything unique to B&H. As for eBaying your way to a clear conscience: how do you know you're not buying from a homophobic racist in Back-creek County, USA?
  2. So long as it's better than the GH4/G7, and approaches the BMPCC, then I'm OK. (I rented the BMPCC, but the usability and lack of 60p take it out of contention for me.) To some extent, I'm thinking of the XC10 as a more usable P&S version of the BMPCC. Final question: some have reported the cameras as being fundamentally 'soft', while other's have suggested the softness is merely the XC10 not over-sharpening the files in camera (i.e. sharpen to taste in post.) Any thoughts?
  3. I'm on the verge of buying this, but: would any users care to offer their thought regarding dynamic range? I've watched quite a lot of footage shot under harsh daylight conditions that suggests it's (at least) on par with the GH4, a non-VLOG version of which I owned but have since sold. Apples and oranges in many ways, I understand, but in terms of usable DR, how well does the XC10 compare?
  4. Thanks, Mattias, for posting these. It's very much appreciated.
  5. Any straight-from-camera files out there for download? (I'd like to see how well it plays in various apps & workflows.)
  6. Can anyone verify that the silent electronic shutter on the A7S is (or is not) available via Sony's Smart Remote Control app? I'm hoping the camera could do double duty for both stills and video, and the silent shutter is a big draw, particularly for up-close (and therefore remotely controlled) wildlife shots. I've done this sort of thing with a blimped DSLR (tupperware and memory foam), which is awkward in the extreme. The A7S sounds perfect, but I've read that operating the thing in silent mode isn't possible via remote. Is that true? Thanks so much.
  7. Looks like Sony is also headed in that direction, at least if their new XDCAM camcorder is any indication. Here's a feature callout from the product page: "The PXW-X70 is also 4K ready and can handle 4K recordings with a future upgrade." Out-of-the box it's HD. A paid upgrade will unlock 4K recording (though the cost of that upgrade hasn't been released.)
  8. Thanks. So managing deep-focus in FF shouldn't be more challenging than m43 (assuming FF noise & DR performance holds up.) Which begs the question: will the A7S at ISO 12800 be cleaner than what I'm getting from a GH4 at ISO 3200? (And will the codec break down, or the sensor overheat, etc.)
  9. For the specific task of reviewing very long clips and pulling usable shots, I use a ShuttlePRO: Being able to kick away from the desk with only a handful of buttons is nice. Weirdly enough, I've found the huge jog/shuttle knob to be its least useful feature. Now that I think about it, I'm wondering if a wireless numeric keypad might not work. Certainly cheaper.
  10. Does the A7s' high-ISO capability effectively negate the dof advantage I’d otherwise get by choosing a Micro 4/3 camera? (Assuming I’m trying to achieve maximum dof.) In other words, shouldn't I be able to match even the deepest dof I could get with an m4/3, just by stopping-down and boosting the ISO…and of course changing the lens to match perspective, etc? Here's the thing: I'm bumping up from teeny-chip camcorders with 10x (yes, that’s double-digits) crop factors, and from this point-of-view, and in light of the A7s, the dof advantage of a 2x crop vs. FF seems almost non-existent. I’m wondering if I shouldn't skip over the m4/3 sensors and go with the A7s. (I’m usually in low-light, high-contrast environments, so the appeal of the A7s on other fronts is obvious.) There are a boatload of questions about the still-unreleased A7s, but in terms of dof, does my thinking make sense? Thanks.
  11. Maybe not. Panasonic filed a patent for a light-field system that: "can be used effectively in every camera that ever uses a solid-state image sensor, and may be used in digital cameras, digital camcorders and other consumer electronic cameras and in industrial surveillance cameras, to name just a few." http://lightfield-forum.com/2014/04/panasonic-patents-image-sensor-for-full-resolution-light-field-recording/ Look like it requires a new sensor and other sundry innards, so I wouldn't count on seeing it as part of any GH4 firmware upgrades. But your lenses should still work.
