How can I reply for many parts of someones story?
-
My biggest issue is that my camera (GH4) is not showing what it is doing when using shutter priority, aperture priority or auto iso. I know what I want for different situations, I know the dangers but the camera is not showing that information needed. It is not forbidden to monitor what exposure values the camera uses with auto modes. You can monitor the screen brightness too. Have you ever heard about EV comp?

Many are shooting video just like snapping photos me included. Holiday videos, memories, documentation.. If the user is not 100% concentrated on exposure the camera will over or underexpose very easily at least if the camera has poor dynamic range. I know this is a film makers forum but many hear are also amateurs or casual video users. I am quite experienced on video but in my shooting style I cant use manual exposure so carefully that the exposure would be always spot on. This is true with my photos too. Of course I use EV compensation if I see in EVF or monitor that the image brightness is not what i want.

I would challenge that. Lets think a holiday snapper takes 500 photos during a day in rapid and challenging situations using different camera angles and concentrating on composition, focusing and peoples best moments. One snapper uses full manual exposure and the other uses auto exposure. Which one gets more right exposed photos? If just talking about right exposure brightness the situation is the same with video. The EVF or monitor is not very reliable in sun light and there are also situations when we cant even see either.

I am sure Mark Williams is very talented. He proves that is is possible to achieve good result also with manual exposure.

One helpful feature would be a semi-auto exposure like the single focus. When pressing shutter exposure adjusts automatically with proper mode and then stays the same during a clip. It would be auto exposure+AE-lock but easier.

No one has yet answered my question "does this camera show automatic exposure values during video?" Does someone has this camera? Is it difficult to test? Can someone just test without a lecture of right ways to shoot video? I cant understand why it is so illegal to use automatic exposure aids in video even with own risk of getting sharp motion or dangerous altering brightness during a clip. Does anyone ever has took a photo with auto exposure?

I was shooting nature videos. The sun was setting quickly and I used difficult angles for close up videos. I can not think that I could use full manual in those situations. The auto exposure worked very well and the results were perfect.

I think the basic general image for everything is JPG Standard profile 0,0,0,0 without any additional features. JPG and video are very similar when using levels 0-255 (I dont know if the GX85 has levels 0-255). I dont think the reasonable image settings affects much. NR, idynamic, sharpness, high shutter speed in motion makes more differences in codec result.

In my tests with GH4 and Natural profile I have not found any quality differences between contrast -5 and contrast 0. The banding, noise and cleannes is about the same. -5 has lighter or flatter image (more what eye sees) but otherwise the quality is the same. Choose the look you prefer. P.S. Both has banding in skies and fine gradations. I use deband filter to remove that banding.

HDR TV has automatically panel light and contrast at 100% and very vivid colors ON when watching HDR material. Watching normal SDR with those settings shows too bright and colorful image. I watch my GH4 videos with panel light and contrast 100% and vivid gamut ON in my Pana 4k TV. When shooted and adjusted properly before TV the video image is stunning.

No one setting is best for everything. I use outdoors with iso200 idynamic low but indoors with higher iso no idynamic. Contrast -5 is best for sunny day but in cloudy day the contrast 0 may work better. With a tele lens I may want to use higher contrast because the image fades in long distance (haze).

I think GH5 will have quite similar sharpness than Sony A6500. 4k 60P, less RS and 10bit will give even much more value.
-
Normally the -5 contrast gives little washed out or too light video image. It is not optimal if watching without additional settings or editing. It is good in very contrasty scenes. I darken gamma in player or graphics card when I watch my GH4 videos shooted with contrast -5. I think the GH4 has in general little less contrasty video than GX80.

4k has so much resolution that I doubt the 4:2:2 is so much worse. I have tested 4:4:4 vs 4:2:2 in my 65 inch 4k TV and the difference was quite small and visible only at very close distance. In videos and photos I did not see any difference.

My VA-panel TV dims and fades contrast and colors when viewing at close distance. The uniformity of the panel is not good either (2 photos of AX800). It was Panasonic top 4k model 2014 and very expensive (about 5000$). Movies and videos looks still very good. My IPS monitor has perfect viewing angles and uniformity but lower contrast.

The video is not showing if the exposure info is visible in A, S, or P mode. The video shows only M-mode. If I want to adjust my exposure the same way as in taking photos using shutter priority or aperture priority I would like to see the changing automatic value too. It would be very difficult to take photos with A or with auto iso if the camera is not showing all the exposure numbers.

1. Always full manual M using 180 degree rule and ND filters 2. Shutter priority with 180 degree rule 3. Aperture priority to use bokeh or lens sweet spot 4. Auto exposure to adjust exposure easy and fast (like photos) and then AE-lock 5. Depends on scene and subject... 6. Other I use aperture priority outdoors and shutter priority with auto iso indoors (or low light) with my Panasonic cameras.

TV is ahead of cinema because it has HDR. If you want to watch a movie with best quality dont go to theater. Watch it at home with a HDR TV.

Very important for me is that I can see all the exposure values aperture, shutter speed and iso in all PASM modes just like when taking photos. Can you remember Oly showing these values? I dont understand why for example Panasonic is not showing exposure info in video modes. It so basic thing to monitor aperture or shutter speed or iso.
