Yeah, a lot of people have a hard time understanding how frame rate can make an image appear "sharper" even though an image might have the same resolution as another. It's true though. Get the frame rate up around the human eye speed of 60fps and the brain just sees it more "natural." However, I believe that the motion blur of 24p will be with us for generations, even though it's a goofy legacy frame rate, simply because movies are a creative art form. Using a slow frame rate can help create the context of an alternate reality. That's why I like it anyway.

I've used it to salvage some RED footage with too much ISO. You basically balance it out by applying as little of it as you can to do the job. So it basically depends on how much grain and how hard you're pushing the image to start with. I'd seriously consider trying to add light or getting a faster lens if shooting low light before relying on NeatVideo though. And hey, I just picked up the GM1 and GX7 for some future shooting. I'm in the same situation as you. What to shoot to grab some proof of concept footage? For me, I could go out and shoot some standard scenics, but I get more motivated when I'm building a story. I'm not flippant; quite serious and it even seems like we agree a bit. If you're able to imagine a compelling story that fits your setting and then build your shots around that narrative idea, you got something cooking. It'll inform your shooting creativity. I think it's good advice.

I haven't had much trouble shooting video to be honest. It's been more intuitive than I expected.

Good call, that. I need to do the same. A few quirks in the camera as a photographer's shooter, but when in manual motion picture filming it's straightforward and easy to use.

Still a great sensor to plug into that body. Overall, close enough for horseshoes and hand grenades if you ask me. The GM1 shoots very comparable to the GH3...and have you seen how small it is!? Anyway, it's gotten to the point where the technology is pretty dang democratized. If you got a visual story to tell, plenty of tools out there to do it that are willing to help and don't cost much at all. (and affordable 4K is on the near horizon) Sergio Leone managed to make a lot more with a lot less. Time to go make something!

A lot. My 5D rig has heft and a nice balance against my head/eyesocket when using the Z-Finder. I can shoot pretty stable and comfortably with that set-up. However, I'm finding a few new tricks to accomplish stable handheld with the GM1. A taunt neck strap is a simple effective technique. Breathing control also helps. Aside from that, shooting on a monopod is a viable option. Anyway, it depends on the project. Since I do most things from sticks I'm not handheld too often, but handheld does work for certain cinematic film making visuals.

As mentioned in the EOSHD article, this is a new OEM sensor from Panasonic. The GH3 is not a Panasonic sensor so IQ discrepancies are expected. But, dang, I'm not getting hung up on pixel peeking charts and tests and voodoo with these things. To my eye so far they look awesome and they're packed into a nondescript lightweight body. That's what I need for what I'm trying to accomplish. Is the image the best on the market? No, but that's not important to me. I doubt Picasso's painting creativity would be diminished if his brush had 50 more bristles in it than another one. Sooner or later you actually have to do stuff with these things. The tools we have in '14 are nuts compared to where things were just a few years ago.

I'd be interested in a hack (or OEM firmware update) that would allow something as simple as 5 second bursts, if possible, @4k/60fps. That would be cool. Heck, even allowing regular 1080/60p limited-time-recording would be swell. You never know. Doesn't seem like an impossibility. I'd like to be able to fly the Gm1 on a helicopter when/if needed and 60p would be a nice option for that. Anyway, I bought a GM1 and GX7 for a hiking documentary and I'll be trying some test shots over the next week or so.

If I were you doing what you're doing, I'd go for a 4K camera. I mean, if you're really serious about what you're after. If it's legit scientific research you're trying to accomplish, then 4K is a worthwhile investment. It's also going to give you options in post that you're not going to have otherwise. Smoothing the tracking bumps from inside a moving car, for instance. Digitally zooming into specific areas, etc. Also, a cam that shoots 4k @120fps would be pretty incredible for extreme weather shots and post analysis. Ultimately though, I'd take 4K resolution over RAW from something like a 5D @1080. If you're just chasing some thrills and want to get there on a budget why not a hacked gh2 with the fastest flash cards you can get? If you want to get footage to a "network" then sending them the captured file (compressed) is the quickest way to do so over the intertubes.

Ah, that's too bad. Thanks for the info. I'm picking up new video gear for a hiking documentary and just started to search around the web for more in-depth Panasonic info. What's the general consensus of hacking progress for the Lumix cams? Has it been hindered by that "family" issue? While I believe the cams I'm buying this week will be the best option for my upcoming needs, it's tempting to consider that the gear could eventually be pushed to higher performance ...if viable hacks are a realistic option...

Why's that? Is the Panasonic hacking community full of rude people? Canon's MagicLantern groups have been rather cooperative from my experience.

Maybe, but I'd think if a $800 camera has a sensor capable of 4k video that can be hacked "on" that would be an incredible development.

I'm still pretty ignorant about the Panasonic cameras, but I like the quality of video image and form factor for my potential remote documentary production. The article mentions that the 4K sensor is already "with us" in the GM1 and GX7. I can't tell if that's idle speculation or an educated guess. It read to me as the later. If so, is it feasible that a future hack could unleash this nascent 4K capability in these sensors? Does Panasonic have a decent user community that's exploring such hacking options? I'm aware that the GH1 could be tweaked. Are hacks looking likely on these newer models as well?

I like it. Lots of fun. And good old rock music! That still exists, eh? To be fair, that video could have been shot on just about anything, so the fact that it's on a BM is irrelevant to me...and according to the filmmaker, sort of irrelevant as well as he deliberately made the image worse than the source. Regardless of that, it was pretty entertaining. Speaking of cameras, I still have the same old hi8 Canon A1 that shows up in this vid.

I definitely covet this cam. My only hope would be that the 60p capability could eventually be opened up via a hack. Having that "slo-mo" ability would be perfection. Holy smokes Panasonic is really putting together some great cameras. This stuff is getting ridiculous. Can you imagine shooting with a camera like this @4K? Soon. So soon...
