    Samsung "The Frame"

did you see the earlier post with the burnt down mac? do you think that was caused by a"short" or a "surge"? my guess is a severe case of burn in from displaying hdr.

    Cheap bokeh setup?

an enclosed trailer for your gear hitched to your bike would be way more fun! think how fast youd go down hills!
  3. and if using aces in Resolve, not sure what gamut Resolve is using for its slog idt either. I assume sgamut but Depending which gamut you used when recording, it may not be the proper transform. Resolve also includes the aces rrt with the odt, so you are also getting aces interpretation of color as well.
  4. if using Resolve, you will also most likely want to head over to clip attributes and change from "auto" to "full". In my experience, Resolve interprets prores from recorders at video levels which is not always the proper choice with prores files, making the image appear to have more contrast, which may lead some to believe they are not dealing with slog.

great post! said on a forum where grown folks gather to argue about the merits of small disposable electronics combined with the excesses of Hollywood. Preach it brother!

if that's too big, you could try vid-atlantic filters and a .50x wide angle adapter to get wide.

    Cheap bokeh setup?

use this with your xc10. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/801131345-USE/redrock_micro_3_006_0001_m3_cinema_lens_adapter.html here's a video showing how it looks with the xc10. you obviously don't have to rig it up big like this example. I know in your other posts switching systems wasn't in the budget, so this might work.
  8. sorry for the off topic post, but did you ever end up with a lomo foton and do you still have the F35 ? if so is it the anamorphic and how are you liking it?

How about those who have a so called "reference monitor" and "calibrated it" or maybe a beautiful apple screen? Do you think its technically any better than the supposedly 10 bit wide gamut panel I just criticized?

    Samsung "The Frame"

When watching films, I can usually tell at the very least if something was shot on film or digital. If digital, more often than not I can guess the brand of the primary camera . Sometimes the glass as well, but not as easily. As hyperbolic as my posts have been, I honestly cannot tell what is what on this panel. Image making is what this entire forum revolves around. From film purists to smartphone ground breakers. So why is there so little discussion about arguably the most important part in the image making chain. Without a way to watch, digital cameras are pointless afterall.

You could apply that to my fireplace! Its my job to review the performance of live orchestras and I depend completely upon a hearing aid. I have my entire life. The sounds I hear are this devices own rendition and interpretation of the original source. The aid I use can only pass through 6 different frequencies and plays some extra loud and even changes some frequencies altogether (although I have no way of knowing this) I just traveled to a small town in Alaska last week. It was so cold the musicians had to wear gloves! To me the orchestra sounded amazing! I write up a glowing review. This small community orchestra with only 5 members and all under the age of 10 are easily on par with the last orchestra I reviewed, the new york philharmonic! Did I mention I got into making reviews just 2 years ago, when I left my country western band because of difference of opinion. They liked acoustic and I like electric. To be honest I cant tell which is which, but my guitar just has this mojo I cant really explain. But im thinking ill trade it in for one of those new tiny violins anyway, you know the ones so small you play with just your thumb and finger. I think they are called the worlds smallest violin. I hear if you play a song on them, its just like hearing an entire orchestra. But keep in mind alot of other orchestra reviwers are claiming you need 10 strings at least. Watch out for the 8 string ones. In fact I think ill write my next review on this. But first I have to go visit JCS. I thought this stuff was supposed to wear off by now.

Kisaha while I value your response, based on your reply, im not sure how the intent of my post was interpreted. How about this. If I were using "the frame" as a reference panel and and you asked my advice "Sam would you recommend the gh5 or a sony s7iii? would you trust the advice about the IMAGE I might give you? (With my best intentions)

    Samsung "The Frame"

It is supposed to have 630 nits. Covers roughly two thirds of rec. 2020. Doesnt support dolby vision although I dont believe any samsung at any price does. It is edge lit so I wasnt expecting much in terms of hdr. Very middle of the pack in terms of specs for a current panel. However, I only purchased it for art mode and watching the news/weather. Im not complaining about the panel, just shocked, that excluding production value, I dont think i would be able to tell if something was shot on a gopro or 65mm film with it. All the typical attributes of the moving images I am used to observing are thrown into a processed mess of a jittery digital cocktail. Which made me think, what panels do those who review cameras for $ or ❤ use to make their assesment regarding image quality? Its one thing to debate in online forums from your moms basement in the middle of suburbia, when your only reference is a couple hundred dollar (or$1400) panel from bestbuy. But are the experts, so called professionals, or those doling out advice for monetary gain any better?
  14. Just hung this up in the living room. A 4k Hdr tv that looks like a picture/art frame on the wall. It displays an image as long as motion is detected and adjusts its brighness to the ambient light. Extremely believable and love this feature. The reason I mention it here is the 4k hdr. Horrible. I come from a panny plasma and a 65" 4k hdr lg oled. I assumed a 4k hdr panel from samsung would look somewhat respectable. Nope. Turned off all the typical motion, sharpening, contrast, etc... Still horrible. Oversharpened with terrible motion. If this is the type of image folks are used to viewing, no wonder no can ever agree on what cameras look good. Drastic difference in the look of shows I know and you tube camera tests. Shocking a $1400 panel can look this bad in comparison.
  15. I'm with ya. but.......Markr041, those specs all describe "data" in terms of amount, precision, and the container in which this "data" is delivered. it defines absolutely nothing about what an imaging system is capable of seeing in the first place. or the characteristic attributes imparted by said system, whether by design or otherwise.
  16. so, in cinema camera land where would you place it? real film shooting cameras in various sizes, Alexa 65, Lf, Sxt, Amirra, Mini, Classic, F65, Venice, F35, F55, C700, C500, Varicam, Varicam lt, Phantom V, Miro, Flex4k, Panavision dxl, Genesis, Monstro, Weapon8ks35, Helium8ks35, Monochrome8k, Dragon6k, Astrodesign8k..... In relatively crazy expensive broadcast camera land where would you place it ? Grass valley, Ikegami, Hitachi, Sharp, Sony, Panasonic, Canon, Jvc..... the fs5 is a consumer/prosumer cam with a price around that of a single budget cinema prime in the flavor of your choice. so yes, in the context of film making, it's a lower end camera, but that doesn't stop anyone from creating a cultural masterpiece with it. I only wish I was the genious who rebranded "video camera" to " cinema camera" . selling a "dream" instead of just a black box that now doesnt even come with a lens.
  17. quite a few lower end cameras from sony have hlg including camcorders and the fs5.
  18. you mean F35 which has sgamut, among others. OP: never used the bmva, but unless you baked in a custom lut (which Is not listed in its specs as possible) it would presumably record the signal you sent it..... you may need to tell your nle/grading software to interpret the prores as data or "full" instead of video levels though, for proper viewing/workflow.
  19. the word mojo is in the dictionary.... magical. sex appeal. not to go into semantics.....but this definition is what I based my posts upon, hence the reference to Austin Powers, as this character is arguably one of the most well known examples of posessing mojo in popular culture. your most recent post fleshes out what your looking for and where you are coming from a bit more than the original. In light of this, I think Oliver Daniels post most helpful. i frequent eohd for the perspective and creativity that only youth + hunger brings. for technical knowledge i would look elsewhere. people here are still hashing out compresion, bit depth, etc... same topics were discussed and debated with sd long ago. google charles poynton for the foremost authority in regards to the technical aspect of digital imaging. Liftgammagain is a great place to read about the thoughts, techniques, and proper workflows of real working colorists, as well as Steve Shaw, another foremost authority. hope this helps.
  20. is the word mojo up for interpretation? it already has a defintion. lets not change its etymology in a single thread ? the op doesn't ask 'what' mojo is. to paraphrase he asks which cameras have mojo and does he need said cameras to get it.
  21. I agree. agreed. oh so many variables. none of this changes the reputation these cameras have aquired.
  22. mojo is a sexiness. a cool factor. a near universal appeal, regardless of tastes. again think of Austin Powers. it is if your Ed David!
  23. No. then any high end cam should have "mojo" and this simply isn't true. what you listed is what helps create a good looking image.
  24. hence Kyes current thread. just look at the post yesterday about the 1dxii vs 1dc. or before that newcomer Dave Altizer noticing the 1dc. these posts happen repeatedly about the 3 or 4 cameras mentioned far more than any other since the beginning of eoshd. (other forums as well) I read one thread about a very knowledgeable dp debating ridding himsdelf of his 16 bit raw shooting sony F55 for the ancient F35 because of the image it produces. what is this "something" that folks consistently and repeatedly notice and comment on in regards to the image produced by a very select group of digital cameras? one idea: two of the most talked about cams have charge coupled device sensors, which is the type of sensor used to scan/digitize the film in a lot of the shows/movies we've watched.
  25. chefs table is beautiful!! very nicely done. The above list isn't my list of favorite cams, just those cams discussed in terms of having some sort of indefinable characteristic. (sort of like the reputation vintage speakers or amps have for coloring sound) . Red is maybe like the studio reference monitor, if that makes sense. okay....now we're redefining mojo? ? ease of operation, ergonomics, etc...? some of us need to watch Austin Powers. (for anonim: Austin Powers = mojo)
