The scene with the P&O ferry and the windmills was golden! Great job.

Ooh, that looks interesting as well. To get back to that Pilotfly H1 deal, nope, with them setting up shop in Bayern, Germany and NAB coming up and indeed, it being a 8-bit controller on there, when they might do a 32-bit version... I felt like holding off a bit longer was the best thing to do. I guess I can even wait for Photokina when hopefully the GX7 successor will be announced. If that's the case I might not even get one altogether. With a lot of full manual glass in my possesion a great part of getting a stabilizer is just to be able to shoot handheld with unstabilized lenses (was on the verge of trading in my E-M1 for the E-M5II, but unfortunately the E-M5II didn't live up to my expectations). For sweet camera movements and use with e.g. the new Micro Cinema Camera however a gimbal stabilizer is pretty nice to have too. Now, I don't really mind the controller being 8-bit on the Pilotfly H1 now, I don't know how they put it to use, but it's one of the most effective things I've seen out there. So if a 8-bit wins from a 32-bit one, I'm not going to argue it should suck more. Anyways. There's tons of MOVI like stabilizers out there now. It's a matter of time for the people behind the Nebula 4000 and Pilotfly H1 to up their own game and others to try and catch the wind from their sails, so I'm sure that in a few months it's the best time to make a choice and the concept of pistol grip gimbals has matured a little more.

To me it looks a touch unnatural. Try this and tell me if you like it better with that correction applied, I kinda do: With the other channels less correction needed... I made a before/after gif:
-
Hum. I guess 'exactly that, yeah' it is! Although, that kinda addresses the way of delivering having to be 6G-SDI compliant (so pro RAW cameras with SDI out). Not sure how one would go about that with a GH4, A7S or NX1 with HDMI-out like current usage with the Shogun/Odyssee, which I think most of us would be interested in...
-
I think he must've interpreted 'You can simultaneously record full 10-bit 4:2:2 HD files on the Video Assist and capture full resolution 4K RAW digital negatives on your camera!' as such. But I'd say nothing points in the direction of it actually taking 4K signals and downconverting it, so my guess would be that that particular statement is false and it in fact does not do this, it just takes monitoring signals that are conform the ones described under SDI/HDMI Video Standards. - Hum, well. It actually does say 'You can view any SD or HD format and, since it includes a 6G-SDI connection, you can even monitor Ultra HD!', although that seems to go against the specs saying '1 x SD/HD/3G-SDI'. But maybe after all? :P

Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera - Official Specs and Price
Cinegain replied to Simon Shasha's topic in Cameras
Too bad 60p is not for the global shutter... -
Not that I'm not excited for this one, I am, but I'd love to perhaps see a slightly bigger (5.5" or 6" perhaps) one though with a bit more monitoring options and 4K capability (also because of the UHD Studio model). I like to cage my cameras (GH4, BMPCC) and it would be nice if I could have a monitor pointing upwards when shooting low angle for example. Or just to have a monitor/recorder with some helpful features framing and focussing altogether. Would really appreciate it if it had all the bells and whistles (more than just a plain histogram) such as scopes/waveforms/histogram/zebras/peaking/focus assist(picture-in-picture punch-in zoom)/frame guides overlays and all that good stuff. For me personally, what I would love to see is a very tiny little box that just does all these things and then puts 'em out over a cable to a calibrated field monitor. The monitor itself is just a mere display, without anything overly fancy having been built-in to it. This way I can buy fairly cheap monitors in different sizes for different occassions and have one very capable processing module. Imagine that module also having somekind of basic wireless monitor push, basicly just a video/screen cap feed that is being pushed on a wireless LAN. Add some smartphones, tablets, computers, monitors or even stream it online to the other side of the world or for live broadcasts and people can see what's being recorded on just about anything. Ah! I can just imagine the Micro on something like the Ronin M or somehow on the Pilotfly H1 and the likes. Awesomeness! Hope that will be the next big NAB thing. More gimbal stabilizers! Yeah, it looks really counter intuitive, the cable from right up going down left around. Bit of a mess. But I've read that the Video Assist's display orientation will automatically adjust to its physical orientation, so I assume you could use it upside down and then I bet there will be a small ass pluggy cable that fits nicely and just runs nice up and down.
-
Very cool and sexy looking! This is actually something that would make me excited for camcorders. Not a that silly little sensor, and ok, perhaps not interchangeable lenses, but hey, some nice Leica glass, but most of all: built-in everything! Forget building up your own systems with all different parts. Built-in NDs, XLR input, handle, shockmount, viewfinder, is that a monitor stowed in the T-section of the handle there? Batteries, memory, go! N'espresso, what else? I mean, I like rigging up a GH4 or BMPCC as much as decorating my house for Christmas... but in all actually all it would take is Mariah's one song to bring me into mood instantly already. 13x zoom sounds pretty decent in terms of flexibility. Must be good for specific uses, personally I still think I'd shy away from this type of camera though. I'd either use something as minimal but flexible as the FZ1000 or go rig a camera with lenses and accessories of my choice.
-
Ooh, that would be awesome indeed! The FZ1000 really struggles quite a bit with dynamic range and highlight clipping, other than that it's like a mini GH4 with a bunch of lenses included. The LX100 looks the part and has the 4K, but is missing a bit that dedication to video. Not sure if they would ever want to go there though. FZ1000/LX100 might be a little to consumerish for them to want to give 'em this.
-
Surely great initial pricing. But it's just the modular base core. Don't fool yourself that's it then, you're going to want the modules like the viewfinder and the shoulder/tripod kit that they show it with and so on. So you're not quite there for that one price yet.
-
Blackmagic working their magic! Together with the micro (global shutter!), yes please! Mini URSA looks great too. And the GH4 firmware update and future plans. It's like Christmas is coming early this year!
-
Which is a good thing. Not sure, but this might've worked better in full black & white I was thinking...
-
I was thinking the same thing when I read that. I do hope a BMPCCmkII will be a thing though.
-
I'm lacking words for this, so I'm going with a smiley: . Do they expect this to sell like hot cakes? I'm wondering who would pay that kind of money for this kind of... eh. Thing.

Shooting with a 4K pocket camera - the exceptional Panasonic LX100
Cinegain replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Speaking of bargains... is there any thread with bargains? I came across the following, which seems like a fairly good deal (atleast for us German speaking countries livers)! Angebot der Woche / Deal of the Week over at Redcoon.de (and .at): 799,- EUR, you might think, that's not that special? And last summer it could be had for as little as 475,- EUR. Well... perhaps it was that cheap at some point in history, but that was history pretty fast. Since then it's been quite pricey again (the deal posted is already roughly bottom price these days (according Geizhals), with some stores daring to charge you 900-ish or even cross that 1000 EUR mark). On CVP it goes for 570 quid, which is not bad. But look closer at the deal I posted here... 2 extra batteries with charger, an Aperture mic and a case to store and travel. I wouldn't go as far to say you're really saving 467,47 EUR, or that the included items are top picks, but basicly for the price at CVP you're getting a case and mic here. The batteries I don't really care much for myself (I managed to snag one for 475 back then, so I had to get that covered already), but for a starter, it's a nice set. Now, the LX100 might not be the best thread to post this either, and I mean, I could've posted it here as well: http://www.eoshd.com/comments/forum/14-blackmagic-cameras/ , but I don't think people browse around there anymore, also because it says 'No posts here yet' when you're on the main index of the forum (which makes it look inactive). I posted some information about new firmware being availlable for the BMPCC the other day, but I'm pretty sure that didn't get picked up by anybody's radar. And to go and give this its own thread. Mweh, flooding the forum with a topic for every single one of my little mentions isn't really my thing. Might be a fun thing though: a Deals/Bargains topic to tip your fellow filmmaker when you can save a few bucks? I know there's http://www.dealsrunner.com (although I haven't seen this deal there), but giving eachother a heads up on EOSHD would be nice, right? -
The way I read this, that particular improvement was already present in the previous update (V1.10)... so wouldn't we have heard about game changing firmware concerning the image stabilization for video by now if that was the case? Even still... wasn't a big fan of the A7II look, stabilization aside. The A7S has a bigger appeal. They should stabilize that one!

Well, if Jackie Chan is promoting this and features a red recording button, then you just know this has to be one mean movie camera. /sarcasm In some way this reminds me of my old Canon PowerShot SX1 IS. Although no bad things about that one though (you know, for 2008 standards). I believe it was the first bridge/superzoom to do 1080p and I got really excited after hacking it with CHDK (Canon Hack Development Kit -> Magic Lantern more or less). That led me on the path of upgrading to a GH2 and hack that! But I'm not really sure where it leaves this 1" f/2.8-f/5.6 fixed zoomlens camera... when we already have the Sony RX100, RX10... although not 4K, as well as the 4K capable LX100 and FZ1000. Big target is the aerial sector ('This definitely looks to be Canon’s foray into the drone market.')? The Inspire 1 has really nice 4K, but yeah, covers a fairly wide angle only. Although, that would just mean you wouldn't have to fly as far away, which in most cases would be an advantage? If you want something better, you could go for the DJI S900 and a broad selection of sweet little lenses availlable for the 4K GH4. Or go for an even more advanced set-up and hire someone to shoot with proper cinema gear from the big guys. It doesn't look sexy. But then hopefully... form follows function and there are some good reasons to make it look as silly as it does. The grip looks interesting. But yeah, the label '4K' alone doesn't convince me, especially looking at all the other specs and without a built-in EVF it's not really the thing you'd go for if you want something hybrid either. At present I see no reason to go with this and knowing Canon it won't even be that cheap. Especially if it targets a very specific audience and makes this a specialty camera. I mean, I'm willing to consider a lot, but it's 2015 and there's a lot of alternatives...

So: what if you're a big fan of Zlatan Ibrahimović, or lord knows who. And he commits a foul earlier in the game... walks away from that with yellow. Then in the second half he just makes a very disgusting and nasty tackle, elbow, stretches out his legs... something like that. Are you of the opinion he should only receive a 2nd yellow but not the red and get kicked off the field? Just because he's your favorite player and the other guy more or less is a nobody? And then imagine the coach of his own team telling the ref to give him red already, because he's so ashamed of his player's behaviour that it should not be tolerated and needs to be kicked off the field already... I mean. You don't want to do that... so respect to you if you do make that call. Anyways. In all fairness. I don't really see the point on debating this over multiple topics. I mean. Don't mind me and have at it all you want (I'm just chiming in here once and am then outta here), but... eh... what's the use? Just people working themselves up over something that's not anyone's decision to make accept for those parties involved. It's not like something that you can say will magically go and change the outcome, you know. You might not agree with it, but to me it seems they have every right to do what they did... and I'm not sure how anyone would think this is a dream scenario for them either... there's no winners here. Talking about Top Gear. Howabout we go talk about top gear around here again... you know, like cameras and how to use them to create awesome things. My two cents.

Just thought to report on new firmware availlable (hadn't come across it yet around here, I just happened to stumble upon it myself as I regularly visit their page (incl. at the end of this post). So... Like a FZ1000/LX100/ARRI Alexa Mini-frankencamera? Sounds weird. Show me!!
-
Pretty straight forward and quick. I was thinking on holding off for a little longer, but this one manages to spike my interest. More so than the Nebula at least. There's also -10% on pre-orders on http://copter-rc.com/en/catalog/60-pilotfly-h1-microdslr-3asix-stabilizer-pre-order.html jfyi. For us Europeans... they might be opening an overseas branch office (actually, they say they are on Facebook), which means we might get to order one locally sometime 'soon'...
-
Well, looking into the company, it must've been part of some kind of optical comparator for inspections and optical measurements. Not sure how anamorphics get involved in that... and not sure whether it's the inspection end or the projecting on the circular display end... http://www.starrett.com https://www.youtube.com/user/lsstarrett/videos Given the possible newspaper background maybe has to do something with this as well: http://www.google.com/patents/US3450464?hl=en . But I think it's fair to say you shouldn't count on it to be any good for anything cinematic given its designed purpose.
-
Well yeah, every option should (although some only ever so briefly) be considered. But we're not talking price range here per se. It's mostly because they are comparable to a considerate degree. Both are 4K capable hybrids, with built-in stabilization and they share the fact that they're non-interchangeable lens systems with flexible optics. And then you're going to throw a 1080p RAW recording cinema camera in the mix that doesn't even take stills or includes glass with a decent range of coverage and sensitivity. If you're considering the LX100 and the FZ1000 I don't really see how you think the BMPCC fits in there in terms of comparability. Sure; from a price point they're close, but they're different sorts of cameras altogether. The LX100 is nice as allround everyday camera. Don't add no nothing, just have it with you (perhaps some neutral density filters) and go about your day, always having that little powerhouse with you if the occasion arises. Same goes for the FZ1000, though it's more an allround travel cam with a higher degree of flexibility, but with some added chunkiness to it. Both have their ups and downs. Surely you can use them in a production environment as well. Though perhaps in limited capacity and rather as added specialty to another camera that's being used as main cam. Sure, you can consider numerous other cameras, like the BMPCC, but then you might as well consider everything... from the GM1, GM5, G6, GX7, GH3, NX500, A5100, A6000, D5300 and D5500 all the way to the GoPro Hero4 BLK or everything upwards from that for that matter, GH4, NX1, A7S, D750, D810, 5DmkIII, 1D C and upwards of that even. And actually. You should. You should consider each and every single camera out there. Might even throw in the E-M5II, don't know why one would, but you can consider it for a brief second. Same goes for the Arri Alexa Mini, although it might be entirely out of your price range (but hey, renting is still a thing). Or hey, forget what I said, just use your smartphone instead! The BMPCC is great because it's pushable due to its RAW recording possibilities. It's small and easily adaptable within a modular system. Footage looks great. Nice 'n flat, pretty great dynamic range for such a sensor. And... and... em. Hum. Well. Em. What's not to like, really? Well... perhaps... it's not for stills, so forget hybrid use. No built-in stabilization. Bad crop/difficult to get wide shots. Doesn't come with glass, you probably end up buying a couple of primes and having to swap 'em all the time. Not particularly high frame rates. Fills your cards up rather quickly. Goes through batteries like it's nothing. Screen isn't the most ideal. This is not a point-'n-shoot, you need to carefully set-up your shot. No blind use with mode and setting dials and tons of (customizable) buttons, just some navigation buttons. Not to mention it's all rather just basic functionality. Audio handling is poorly done. Oh. And last summer it was on sale with spectacular prizes. People were anticipating a successor soon... or a catch. Nope. Nothing of the kind. But the knowledge of putting down money for a camera, of which the amount months back would've bought you 2 of 'em (with no apparent reason other than the fact they can), that kinda stings, doesn't it? Anyways. In the end... it's great if you use it purposely. But it requires a very different approach than the LX100 or FZ1000. Listen, I have the BMPCC... but not instead of the LX100 or FZ1000. They simply can't replace one another. That's why I have all three. And the GH4. And the GH2. And the E-M1. And the D5300. And several action cams. Although, surely that's the most ideal situation: not having to choose one to stick with, just have plenty of tools so you can put each tool to each specific use without compromising due to of the drawbacks a single solution would bring with it. Bit tougher if you have to pick one. It will depend on how you use it. Hybrid (stills/video) or not (video only)? Does size and weight constrict you? Do you need an all-in-one solution with a spontaneous point-'n-shoot character? Do you mind swapping out lenses and rigging your gear? How are you going to handle power supply? Are you going to use it in a production environment? Quality requirements? Gradeability? Need for slowmotion? Storage/archiving? Would you need specific system requirements for quick editting turnarounds? There's a lot that can make you go one way or another. There isn't a universal solution that meets the requirements of all shooters out there. Pick something that suits your individual needs the best... which can be any camera, really... just not sure if you want to take a too long look at the BMPCC, when you were thinking a LX100 / FZ1000 would nicely fit in your way of shooting. They might be similar at initial purchase, but are pretty much worlds apart. And with the BMPCC you're not even there yet after getting the camera itself...

Olympus E-M5 Mark II - love and hate at first sight
Cinegain replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
The good stills stuff gets reserved for the E-M1 line-up, so what it's successor concerned... I wouldn't expect much from it videowise. Best thing for me right now would be for the E-M1 to get the much wished for 24p and 25p. That should've been standard to begin with (for any camera, really), wouldn't even dare asking for any other mumbo jumbo than that for the current E-M1. But again, them wanting the E-M1 to be for stills and the E-M5II for video... it's not likely for them to change that up now. Anyways. For those who need built-in stabilization and 24p/25p in addition to 30p and you can put up with all the downsides... sure, this is a thing. If you know its limitations and can move within those boundaries and are happy enough with the results... who's to tell you you've made a bad choice? In the end you've got something that any other camera couldn't do. Now... the same goes the other way around though. There's stuff it won't do that other cameras can, so after weighing the pros and cons you either end up with this... or go for something else. Personally, I think there are too many letdowns to this camera, stuff they should've gotten right from the get-go. And although they've sorta listened to us... on paper giving us the goods, they won't be listening like Samsung does, so I'm not expecting them to address any of these issues any time soon. They don't like admitting they've put out a flawed product, because it seems they think of it as 'curing' not as 'improving'.
