  1. Means a lot, coming from you as sort of a Canon enthusiast. Already wondered why anyone would be all about it. But it really is as simple as: does it have a front-facing screen? Yes. Does it have Canon's DualPixel C-AF? Yes. Does it take a microphone input? Yes. In vlogger county, that's all that matters. Most of their videos load up on smartphones and crappy connections request for 360p, rather than anything Hi Def. These aren't cameras for cinematographers. These are for the casual crowd that don't (want to) know any better. That have fallen for the myth of Canon skintones and such. That care more for quick uploads than footage gradability. In true Canon fashion they know everyone and their neighbour's dog shoots a Canon and will recommend shooting a Canon, so they don't feel the pressure to really innovate and push the boundaries. And if I were Canon... and had it that easy, that I wouldn't need to lift a finger either and still sell cameras... I probably would too. Though I've got the feeling, that someday in the not too distant future, that's going to come back to haunt them...
  2. B&H GH5S livestream (as we speak, has been going on for a bit now though, probably re-watchable during/after):

    Vintage? More like wintage!
  4. One second on Google gives me item no. ' DVPW1003Z ', which can be bought from a bunch of places. Ideally you get someone to send you theirs that they absolutely have no use for (I personally never use one (nor do I think the provided one is any good), but I like to keep the original box and acc. for resale value). Doesn't seem to have a specific 'GH5' designation, so probably just a generic 'Lumix G' one you get with most of these cameras.
  5. Canon actually did that e.g. on the 80D. Supposedly there was a little more useful highlight/shadows information, but the overall image quality took a hit. The new LG V30 got announced with 10-bit HDR image sensor. Yet, it never recorded video as such (nor do I believe any smartphone does). HDR with these kind of phones is also mainly highlighted because of the displaying compatibility, rather than the recording one.
  6. Well, stills 'HDR' is basically SDR + additional SDR (exposure shift) = enhanced SDR. Video 'HDR' is basically a luminance priority for actual HDR content. Or the Note 8 does something else than traditionally the case.
  7. Ehm, isn't the HDR processing stills VS video like way different..?
  8. Subtle difference to add more reds and blues and less yellows and greens
  9. Next up: JVC GY-LS500 predictions...

    DJI Mavic Air

One controller to rule them all. Seriously though, Casey forgot his Spark remote he said... aren't they like interchangeable... if not... why the hell not? I suppose it's 2.4Ghz bind-n-fly, so, it doesn't seem likely to be out of frequency interference. Weird.

    DJI Mavic Air

Looking forward to some more initial reviews. Never really was blown away with the quality out of the Mavic Pro (for some reason it always rendered far atmosphere in a funky way when shooting somewhat horizontally oriented with a bit of depth to the shot, though vertically pointing down it looked way nice (oh yeah, and there's like sharpened smudges)). At the other end of the spectrum, people were very enthusiastic about the Spark because it's the most fun to use. If it's some sort of hybrid, fun to use and really good quality... I might be tempted... even to spend like 300-400 bucks on becoming a licenced operator. Especially this year, now I'm getting a motorcycle and will take a break from being stuck in the big city and its public transport as well as taking it with to places like Mauritius where I doubt they'll be very strict about it.
  12. I was there back in 2010, thought I'd look around for some tech and camera gear... but what these guys, especially Oli, say. Price is only a bit cheaper if you buy a local market model (e.g. Kiss instead of Rebel or ___D), but they do not provide worldwide warranty, so... didn't pick up a single thing except for a tripod that time (long exposures in Tokyo is kinda cool). But they do have some cool stores to roam around... but you don't end up drooling more than you would over at a B&H... If you're into watches, I'd look at that instead, I've recently imported a Casio Pro Trek PRW-6000SC-7 and love it! They've got some cool stuff and nice prices there.
  13. Ah, my bad, I thought this was a centralized/sticky topic for all things related GH5S... didn't notice the missing 'S', also because of previous convo to my post.
  14. Seems like it's a front element adapter originally intended for Sony E-mount lenses. But since they have the same filter size, you can throw one in front of the 14mm. There's a lot of teleconverters, this just happens to works the other way around, it widens your field of view. Never heard of this possibility before it got mentioned here, pretty sweet little set-up. There's no stacking of adapters as it's just the one front element, although, I am of the mindset that less optical attachments are better than more, but maybe this one is really good.
  15. Probably like lenses: 60%, cameras: 30%, rest, well yeah, 10%. Mostly like low entry tiers RØDE, Zoom stuff and super low budget Chinese stuff. Most expensive audio gear was probably the Ohrwurm X. Do think you can make quite affordable audio solutions work if you know where they really suck and avoid ever being in that position... speaking of which, positioning is the thing that makes most of the difference. Considered an Aputure Deity and a fancy smancy recorder... but... can't be upsetting the ratio now... lol
  16. No honey, no. Not that 'argument' again. C'mon son. Besides, it's not actually as if I applaud that, heck, I'd love 4K. It's just acknowledging the steps Canon's taking to provide the least hassle (and backlash) as possible for people who'd pick one up. You know, people's computers not being up to snuff and crashing editors, perhaps needing to work with proxies, but having no clue how that would be done, complains that it their turnarounds are too long and the render and upload takes forever, data management problems... or even 4K being restricted to a few minutes et cetera. You can't deny these aren't meant for pros, these are cameras that people buy as a point-and-shoot. They don't care about camera settings or anything, heck, even the more pro YouTubers with one constantly have flickering issues because the exposure is completely automated or in aperture priority. That's why they rely on C-AF. That's why they don't bother with ext. audio. Etc. It just has to be easy to shoot and share your content to the web. And it's tough to argue that what they do doesn't insure that. That said... you can't stay behind the curve forever. And I think that any camera over a 1000 bucks at least, isn't your typical consumer point'n'shoot anymore, so, that they're leaving 4K out of the prosumer DSLR and mirrorless market... is questionable. Because these are the people that do like the options and playing around with the settings and post development. The Phantom 4 Pro has 4 cooler fans.
  17. I think the potential results of that tech, but yeah, I can't do anything but agree to that. It's the main forum index after all.
  18. Do think tech is discussed from an experience standpoint. How to shoot more efficiently, how to overcome certain problems we might be facing. It's only just partly gear nerding for the sake of it. And of course, otherwise, the community regulates/dictates what it wants to see. If that's mainly tech related... that's just what you get, but of course anyone is welcome to shape it the way they want and add their own twist.
  19. Well actually... Depends which market. Canon's still not very exciting, especially or stills. But they do the basics right in these compact cameras: easy (incl. not opening up 4K for the masses for easy to handle footage to edit and upload), dope colors out of the box no tweaking, C-AF (sorta, even with Canon far from perfect), stabilization... sorta acceptable built-in mic quality (everybody just adds a furry adhesive windscreen, rather than some ext. audio solution?). Which of course makes a huge difference for casual video. Bit like the Cisco Flip camcorders back in the day... just hit to record. What I am wondering about with that render... it seems the display can only tilt... but the way it does seems a little odd, I have the impression it can not do a 180 rotation? Also don't like flip up or down screens (although it keeps the subject's eyes pointed in the direction of the lens, rather than off-camera (this is why Casey wears sunglasses)). Obviously down prevents you from mounting it on a tripod, or atleast you wouldn't be able to see much. Flip it up and it would be blocked by an ext. mic or accessory you might've been using there. Vari-angle screen to me is still the way to go for these type of cameras. Or perhaps like a couple of Samsung cameras did... a small framing display in front (but then you can't really check focus or anything). Anyways, speaking of RX and Canon G_X... Sony looks pretty horrible for this application (Cloverfield comes to mind). G1X Mk II is saved by stabilization, but actually isn't all that great otherwise. If one would've mentioned it was shot on a Panasonic, people would be nitpicking it sucks in certain areas... yet Canons always seem to be hailed as a flawless king. What I'm hoping for... LX100 successor with e.g. mic-in, better stabilization, better C-AF and vari-angle touchscreen.
  20. There's a whole section just for it: https://www.eoshd.com/comments/forum/21-shooting/
  21. Haha, yeah, that looks like one of these artist renders. But I do find it an interesting concept. Makes me think that if Canon would've outsourced the camera development to YI (Young Innovators, by China giant Xiaomi) who are of course responsible for the minimalistic YI M1, that is very Leica like in terms of simplicity and perhaps even design. As well as made touch interface friendly for taking intuitive control of your settings. YI is also known for their GoPro rivalling budget actioncams capable of 4K60p. So you know, 1+1=2. If they were to design a premium compact camera for Canon, you betcha it would be something like that. The premise is interesting. Especially since it said 4K50, USB-C, HDMI & MIC. Things we know Canon wouldn't do. Just look at their premium compact flagship G1X Mark III... Now, at the same time the G7X and its Mark II have been really popular amongst the YouTube crowd. So they could really appeal and bring in even more people, myself included.
  22. Speaking of soundrecorders... has this totally gone past all of us? There's a new H1 version in town, the H1n (*video below was posted by them 4 weeks ago) https://www.zoom-na.com/products/field-video-recording/field-recording/zoom-h1n-handy-recorder Hum... it looks cool, that's for sure. --- ah, I've found you back in the Newsshooter article comments... Mmmkai. Fair enough. Still think it can have some application though (personal music recording), as it's also just a mic itself and it's cheap, lol.
  23. Have a look at the 2nd hand market. Overseas it's much cheaper. I once bought the Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 for 99 bucks from B&H (so, US to Europe), they had re-labelled it in Germany and came to my doorstep free of additional fees. Of course, one might not always be lucky, but even through the official procedures that SLR Magic might still be cheaper with all charges. There it's 539 USD. So ~ 440 EUR. Shipping. Not sure, 30 bucks perhaps. So 25 EUR. Total value taxed is 465 EUR. Say import duties are 4.2% customs duties (I believe for optical equipment) ~ 20 EUR and 23% VAT ~ 110... handling fee about 15 more. You've got it for about 610,- EUR or 2545 PLN. - Adorama has a bundle up for sale with their vND: https://www.adorama.com/slr1021mfnd2.html
  24. And it's not even April 1st yet, lol xD Actually, that's pretty genius. But it isn't very run-n-gun friendly... although... we might see user mods!
  25. Yeah, that Canon actually performs rather well, doesn't it. Atleast in terms of detail/sharpness... might not have given it enough thought over the years, mainly because of that mount. But like you say, there are ways. Or natively again, that 9-18mm Olympus. Voigtländer seems to have a nice look to it, but not everybody is a fan of the quality. Kowa has an 8mm. And SLR Magic has a 10mm as well of course: https://www.eoshd.com/2015/01/slr-magic-10mm-t2-1-review/ For something between your both ends, 12mm is available from just about everyone. A lot of choice there, incl. Veydra.
