Oddball? Don't let 1D C & 1DX Mark II shooters hear it!

Not really. If anything, they've provided us with options like no other. They're all somewhat close, yet different. (GH2, GX7, GH3,) GH4, G7, GX80, GX8, G80, GH5. Which other brand does that? The NX1 and NX500 were rather different. The A5100 has no successor, the A6300 was followed up by its direct successor the A6500. X-T2 is the first real endavour of Fujifilm is this direction. Think the gap between the G80 and GH5 sorta makes sense. There's a lot of people who want a flagship camera but do not necessarily need all the advanced video features of the GH-line. Well, that's exactly what the G80 already is, a hybrid flagship. They didn't leave out a mic-in and Cinelike profiles like on the GX80, there's some clear difference in positioning and price. The GH5 takes up a lot of research development and it sorta benefits from having some of the features 'tested'/getting implemented first on the more entry level models. All these things we ask of it to do... it costs money. Sure, like V-LOG L you could opt for a model that lets you unlock all the individual strengths it has. Maybe you don't need V-LOG L, or an anamorphic mode or slow motion and then you buy the camera for 1499 and have to pay for the individual upgrades. But before you do that kind of market survey to estimate where you'd be grossing out, you might as well make the camera that does it all and sell it for the price it needs to be. Where I do see a gap in the market... something like the BMPCC. A handheld, portable cinema shooter that does RAW DNG/ProRes. Because if you want to shoot like an ARRI/RED/BMD/Kinefinity/Sony, cinema style... or the Varicam even... the proper cameras are either too bulky or unreachable for us peasants. The BMPCC really changed that. Especially when it was on sale for 475 EUR (I remember everybody was like 'oh! Must mean a v2.0 will be released soon, I'll wait for that one!). So... speaking of a gap... if either Blackmagic Design or Panasonic would step it up with a RAW DNG/ProRes shooter at say 2499... That would be sick! The Craft cinema camera comes to mind. That was a good concept. Then again, that was about the only thing it was. xD If you add everything to a full BM46 or Kinefinity Terra, it's not that cheap either. Craft had worked out all the modules together would be $2,894. That would be quite a nice level up from a GH camera. Hope someone will offer something like it. Not a crazy fan of the BMD Production Camera, but that's about the only thing in the ballpark.

Don't know where someone said that Sony, Fuji or Oly performs less than a Panasonic. I guess we can all agree that they've always been a little behind on juicyness of the image; just can't squeeze as much out of a smaller sensor, simple as that. But that's not the point. It's being completely oblivious to that and going with it anyways, because it's by far a more productive camera and arguably the better value. Panasonics are workable and you can get some really lovely results with them. Being more attracted to the GH5 than the X-T2, E-M1 Mark II or A6500, doesn't make you a fanboy anything, so I don't really get the 'being attacked, defend!'-mode. Doesn't mean you think the image trumps all else. Just means you really like what it does nontheless and have the confidence that you can make it work. And remember not everyone has the resources to pull off a two camera inventory.

Nah mate. They can't name prices for stuff that isn't officially announced, they get in trouble if they keep that mess up up (like mentioning accepting pre-orders from the 4th of january). These slip ups are most likely true. Already entered into the system, but shouldn't have been publicized.

Sure... from a thread about Metabones Speedboosters:

GX85 External Monitor? Monitor/Recorder? 1080p?
Cinegain replied to Ronnie Amighetti's topic in Cameras
Ah, I didn't realize there they released new firmware two weeks ago incl. for the original VA: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/readme/4244ca03ae18484eb22ac1cfab400788 and more a month earlier. Cool. Then yeah, that got pretty interesting again. Need to check the improvements and if it's usable. Q5 needs to be fed with a 1080p monitoring signal rather than 4K? If that's what you want, the Ikan does look pretty neat too. Just as a monitor the Lilliput has all the features ('Timecodes, Columnar YRGB, Pixel Zoom Function, Vector Scopes, Waveforms, Audio Level Meters, Peaking, False Colour, Histograms, Exposures, Check Fields, Color Bars, Pixel to Pixel, and Image flips') of course. -
GX85 External Monitor? Monitor/Recorder? 1080p?

Video assist is more of a recorder with a screen than a monitoring tool (there's HDMI Mode 1080p selectable with Info Display (Rec) OFF). Take a look at the Lilliput Q5. -
Well... brace for impact, in that case. Olympus had this autofocus horse shot of a few seconds at announcement that looked promising. However, I don't believe there's an substantial improvement for C-AF that much, it might be there, but it's more hit 'n miss and not as smooth as the dualpixel AF by Canon. They already had PDAF in the E-M1, but it was generally intended for the Four Thirds lenses and only assisted with Micro Four Thirds lenses, this time around it's for MFT all the way. Not sure if Panasonic wants to get into that as well, from the path they've taken, it wouldn't seem very likely I'd personally say. But hey, tomorrow we'll know. Longest 24 hrs ever!
-
Probably... not? They're pretty hard on that DFD and given, it is pretty quick (just not very smooth or very accurate in continuous). In contrast, no pun intended, the E-M1 Mark II has 121 cross-type on-chip phase detection AF points... so I think the GH5 will remain to use contrast based detection, as we've seen in all their models previously, with the addition of depth from de-focus. Not expecting any magical changes in C-AF unfortunately.

In his defence. He is right. If you suck at manual exposure and let it run wild. You end up clipping a lot of the useful dynamic range, resulting in less captured dynamic range. So either you just need to pay attention and not suck at manual exposure, or... like a Tesla, you let the damn thing do it for you. It's convenient, but not very good practice (doesn't make you skilled at it)/fun.

I'm actually all for biological cameras. That will crossbreed and evolve into new species. Or atleast mechanical ones that have 3D print functionality and instead of firmware updates, they actually upgrade themselves on a physical/mechanical level. And have one of them StarTrek replicators in the future. I have to agree, serving beverages would be utterly convenient.
-
Me neither. And there's an undeniable advantage to a bigger sensor, it just catches more quantity and hence quality light. But I'm just not into fullframe as I don't like DSLRs and mirrorless there's only Sony and I'm not really their biggest believer, getting into a fullframe system is just too expensive and needing those 35mm image circle covering lenses kinda defeats the purpose of having a small camera, if anything, it makes it unbalanced to shoot with. I'd rather have APS-C. I'd still have the option to use a focal reducer and boost it towards fullframe if I absolutely have to. Thing is with Sony APS-C, that's just the thing you might be doing as their are hardly any native APS-C lenses for it. The performance is 'on fleek', though. Can't say nothing bad purely on image quality (although we've learned that their standard colorprofiles causes problems when left untouched). But Sony has other problems they need to address. If they actually did that... I could perhaps even see me getting one someday. But I imagine they'll go straight for the paper specs and not the reallife handling of the camera. Which means that the APS-C crown goes to Fujifilm. If only Panasonic and Olympus were into APS-C. But... they aren't, they seem very commited to that MFT mount. Funny enough though, the Varicam does feature S35 and offers... wait for it... the EF mount. If they could just borrow the color science and dualpixel AF too and throw it into the VC5 (VariCam5, still hoping for this one! Something up from the GH-range, but not quite cinema, more like Kinefinity). Or... Nikon... now, I'm not actually religious, but I've been praying for a mirrorless APS-C 4K Nikon since forever. But I guess if you believe in noone, noone will answer. Better not to look at what you don't have and do look at what you do have, anyways. That said... happy new gear! 2017... it's going to be an interesting one.
-
Yeah, Sony, ball's in your court. I can already hear the order: 'Rush it, guys! No time to waste. We better bring it quick! Just make it look amazing on paper again!' being given.
-
Yeah, a lot of the times it takes getting away for a while and looking at it again with a set of fresh eyes and then change it up a little or even starting from scratch (like I toned back the example, because I later saw an excessive red tint in the darker mids). Don't like LUTs that much, except for quickly rotating through a bunch to see how different looks might affect the feel of the image. I'd usually then start from scratch to get close to that.
-
Yeah, just most enthusiast and indie filmmakers do a lot of run 'n gun shooting and they don't particularly go and carry around lighting kits, so they are oh so tempted by the convenience of setting a camera to ISO6400/12800 and just go and shoot something in availlable light in pretty dodgy lowlight conditions. It's just easier to find and work with f/2.8 zooms (although with Sony you hardly have native ones of those, so you'll be adapting) than with super fast primes too (which you can't afford to pinch much to get a deeper depth of field/sharper image). Think that might need to be added to the equation. But you're so right, a camera such as the GH5 would be legit enough for just about anything serious. RED, ARRI, BMD wouldn't be much different in terms of shooting conditions and flexibility. So you can shoot like a pro, but be doing it on the fairly cheap. Just different cameras with different uses. I do wish I could set ISO3200/6400 not have a care in the world. But from the GH4 and Blackmagic we're kind of used to be limited to ISO800 and somehow making it work. And I guess now ISO1600/3200 might be fair game. I'd say that's perfectly managable, but it might not be quite there yet for those earlier mentioned group of people.
-
It's always a last resort, but you can always try and 'fix it in post'. I think the trick is to remove the reds from the highlights, then pump them back into the mids. And balance things out with the other color channels. This is just a quick adjustment with highlights red -35 and midtones red +60 without even further tinkering around with it... So, before: After:
-
They've introduced the GH4R that comes without the restriction and removed the time limit on the FZ2000. I think it's fair to say the GH5 will probably have this covered too (and that the price will reflect this accordingly).

I'm familiar with MINIX, used several Android TV boxes over the years. Good schtuff. Seems they have a good all-in solution as well: http://minix.com.hk/en/products/neo-c-usb-c-multiport-adapter / http://www.geekbuying.com/search?keyword=minix+usb-c . Guess the Hyperdrive hub is pretty dope too: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hypershop/hyperdrivetm-compact-thunderbolt-3-usb-c-hub-for-m . Seems like a bunch of options are out there.

You can probably do something with Rakuten/Amazon.jp or Tmall/Taobao and an agent (e.g.+a.e.g.). Wouldn't be opposed to third party solutions of reputable brands either, like Xiaomi: https://world.tmall.com/item/539426234542.htm / https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Original-Xiaomi-Mi-Notebook-Air-USB-C-to-HDMI-4k-USB-3-0-Multifunction-Adapter-USB/32776108843.html or Orico: https://oricocompany.aliexpress.com .

Exactly. That's also why people started using it for anamorphic shooting. But there's some bias towards photography, so what they did thereafter is actually release a proper anamorphic mode as firmware update.
