The glass is good. I'm curious to hear your opinion on the built. How's the fit over there? Loose/tight? Just right? Notice any weird blue/green lubrication residues?

I really like Ginirigs and Kamerar for some schtuff. RatRig has some fun bits as well. Do still have that 717AH fluid head from back in the GH2 days. Still alive and kicking these days.

ZY Optics/Zhongyi/Mitakon, then R.J. ( directly at: jinrongshanghai /a/ gmail com ), latest player: Kipon BAVEyes (BAV standing for BAVaria -> Bayern region in Germany because these are the results of a joint venture between Kipon and I/BE Optics (known from Handevision)). Then there are some brandless or alternatives ones that are not quite mainstream, these can be found anywhere on eBay. But I'd say the three above are decent options. I wish someone did a shootout between all of them. But usually it's only brand X VS Metabones.

I don't think that either, but their compacts or bridges were always very consumer oriented. Not really for the enthusiasts or prosumers. They tried with the Nikon Coolpix A, I guess in an attempt to mimic the Sony RX1 and Sigma DP Merrill or something, but pretty sure that never took off the way they'd hoped. Now they seem to want to take the Panasonic LX100 and Sony RX100 concepts and run away with it. Just... it seems their compact lines and DSLRs lines operate rather independent, 'cause non of the compacts really have that distinct Nikon vibe to me (in terms of 'All of that'). I mean, I'll keep an open mind, these look and sound rather serious, don't get me wrong, but I would keep in the back of my head that these might not live up to their raised expectations...

Yeah, but you have to be careful here... you're now comparing DSLRs to compacts. I have both D5300 and more recent S9900. The compact camera doesn't shoot video anything like the D5300... it's okay, because I just needed something small and light with still some zoom for stills shooting, but I think you're in the wrong, when you think video will come out of these puppies looking like the stuff we're used to from their DSLR range. It will probably look more like their current compacts... overly sharp, poppy, modern, low dynamic range, weird motion. Footage that doesn't hold up well when pushed in post. All of that. And by the looks of that, that's exactly the case. Sure you could make any camera appear somewhat decent, but just be careful with these...

Perhaps if their fullframe cameras were priced like the NX500 and NX1, sure. But otherwise there's still not keeping people much from picking the fullframe big three: Sony, Canon or Nikon. That's exactly the problem with their APS-C line-up now as well. It's competing in the same segment where you've already got brutal opponents and where the average soccer mom, acquaintance and electronics store employee shoots and recommends something other than Samsung. And only a small percentage actually cares about the features and quality it has over other options. Or they don't find that its benefits justifies the price. It's tough. I do actually think APS-C/S35 is where it's at. I know so from having the APS-C D5300. And I really love the sensor. Just... I'm totally over the traditional approach, I just can't stand it. I want to shoot mirrorless already... so... sure I could stick with M43... but I wouldn't mind taking a shot at Sony APS-C mirrorless either. Pana's loss... and that would be a reason for Panasonic to have to go and up their game and take the JVC approach to have an APS-C sensor behind that M43 mount... will they do it? Prolly not. Will I pick up an A6300 and take it for a spin? Most definitely. -

Its development probably has little to do with the Samsung imaging division to keep some form of the Samsung camera ecosystem going... This is more observing Canon not acknowledging the need to jump on 4K recording cameras for the longest time, since in their eyes they're not the ones who have to sell 4K tvs, unlike Panasonic and Sony, until they realized this is actually a trending demand of the market in general. Just... over at Canon they have the mindset 'hey, we didn't wanted to give you this, but you asked for it, that's like wanting some extra side dishes with your meal, so you'll understand we'll be charging you extra!'. If you're going to have to give in eventually, you might as well start today! And Samsung is in the final content delivery business as well... tvs, tablets, smartphones! VR Glasses now... and Canon's right... you want to sell those devices that support certain features, e.g. 4K or VR? Then enabling the people that use those devices to produce their own content for it really seems the way to go. So this time around we're seeing a trend where people get more interested in VR. A pretty fresh market segment. You could wait it out and see what happens... but Samsung also knows that once brands have secured their position in a certain market, it's hard for newcomers to steal away their customer base. So... they see some new land ready for the taking, with only a handful of others that are growing some crops here and there, but with the right approach planting some seeds now will make for a great harvest fest later! I don't think Samsung will re-enter the camera market with something like the NX-line again. I think for them it's done. They've tried, they've cut their losses and are now moving on... -
I believe the PIX-E5(H) has some cool zoom functions. Not exactly cheap... the go-to brands on a budget are Aputure, Lilliput, MustHD, Ikan, Feelworld, Seetec and perhaps Sony's CLM-V55. Viltrox has some that are rather inspired by that one. The Lilliput 663/O/P2 has the dopest features for the best price. Whereas the new Aputure FineHD-line probably has the dopest price with decent features. Look into these and I'm sure you'll find something to your liking. I hope that color improvement will find its way to the A6300 as well! Though, it's like Erik Naso said somewhere around here: 'I don't get the Sony skin tone argrument really. I like most of you shot in LOG modes and grade the image to what you want it to look like. I shoot with a lot of cameras. C100, C300, A7s, GH4, FS7 and they all get graded to look the way I want'. It probably just depends on the effort that has to go into it. That's why I mentioned Canon just makes it seems so effortless, which is something people keep on saying... you pick one up, there's no fuzz, it just works. A slight curve adjustment would probably suffice in a lot of conditions. That's pretty neat and saves you a lot of time in post because with Sony, if something just still looks a little off and you've looked at the footage for way too long already you need to take a break and come back later with fresh eyes. And then it can have all the features in the world, but then you gotta hand it to Canon... for what it is, it's really good. Perhaps the 5D4K... but until that time, there's no denying the rich featuresets of these mirrorless cameras that anno 2016 can give you new creative possibilities... which could be the only way to go in some situations and all the digital aids does make things a whole lot easier on you during shooting. There's no best of both worlds yet. Well, I guess maybe Blackmagic's schtuff is pretty darn close.

I know this is kind of an old topic, but this one seems to have taken some actual form and looks like it could be yours in just a few months! Would you get something like this? If so, what would it need to be priced at to make it attractive enough? Does seem to allow for Aputure DEC-like focus pulls as well. Dunno. Interesting thingie this. Would be great if they could get it to work like the FS5's integrated electronic variable ND.

Talking about the Chinese film industry, I was surprised to see that the Alibaba Group, which I know very well for its ecommerce dealings (mainly AliExpress/Alibaba/Tmall & Taobao), has recently stepped up to be a major player in the film industry. It was brought to my attention when I recently watched the latest Mission Impossible... Dang China!

Is that lens bundled with the FS5 any good? If you get the FS5 with kitlens that would be the 18-105mm PZ G OSS. Probably more for doc type schtuff, but still, if they bundle it with the FS5... I imagine it can't be terrible for video. It's surprisingly affordable.

Agreed! The pocket was really something, especially when you picked it up in the summersale way back when it was 495 USD and there were rumors it was because they wanted to clear stock before the successor came out... and then none came! That's just insane power for the value. Of course, it's not without its shortcomings... but if your primary target is ending up with gorgeous footage... it sure delivers that! I've been keeping my eye on the BMD Micro Cinema Camera as well, but unfortunately it's very BMD to have to wait for ages and we're not even sure if they pulled off the global shutter... maybe it's something they've said out to do as a goal and never quite reached it. The cameras they announce are more like predictions it seems... 'we think we'll be able to do this in due time, so just bear with us'. Well... NAB 2016 is just around the corner now... what's up B-M-to-da-Deeds!? Perhaps they did a complete redesign of the sensor and infrastructure, enabling finally both rolling and global shutter operation, the thing they were fighting with... as well as giving it a higher than FHD sensor now (2.5K/4K?). Maybe they'll even add a little screen, or a sweet accessory that will work together with the Video Assist like a charm, making it an ideal set-up... I've said it before, but oh how I would love to use it something like this: which wouldn't be far off from shooting a caged GH4... You're right, the footage out of these 1000 bucks Blackmagics are as well very organic looking. The Pocket wouldn't win the numbers game either, it is mirrorless, but doesn't really show all those crazy features we've come to expect from having had Panasonics, Sonys and even Samsung around. Again... maybe this is another testament that others out there are just trying too hard (perhaps even Blackmagic themselves with the URSA Mini?). Focusing on all the numbers and features, upping it with every release and here we have something that just basically has one standing out feature: rich meaty files with loads of embeded character. The benefit of the Pocket and the Micro is... they are great for the mirrorless shooters that now shoot GH3, GH4, G6, G7, GX7, E-M5II, NX1, A7S, A7SII & A7RII. A key benefit of me as Micro Four Thirds shooter is... I already have figured the mount out, so I have tons of native glass and ways to adapt other lenses as well! It's still small and light! And it doesn't break the bank! Maybe you shoot an interview that has to go online as soon as possible and you get things right in-camera and use on-board audio, well, it's great to use something like the GH4. Quick color adjustment here and there, 4K gives you some interesting editting options and bam! If you're a hybrid shooter, shoot some stills as well. But... for those times that you shoot moody stuff, where looks are a key factor and the image has to look, here I go again: filmic, dang, those ProRes or DNG RAW files will get you places! It's a nice addition for a mirrorless shooter. Currently the typical combo would be GH4 and BMPCC. I can imagine in the next months that will turn to the A6300 and BMMCC. One for the thick moody stuff, the other for all other things including some sweet slowmo! But first it needs to come out!

Yeah, somehow the 1D C has got it down and got it down good. It might not compete well in the numbers game (well, maybe launch price, ey), but delivers you something that, and I hate myself for saying this, because it's stupid, just looks filmic. It's less robot... less clinical, less emotionless, less efficient, yet sooo efficient... it's more like a living creature that breathes, has soft skin, with some freckles perhaps and when you look the creature into its eyes, it's not pitch dark and empty, but there's something expressive, a spark, a flame. There's emotion. Confidence, richness. I don't like the camera one bit. I'm really all about mirrorless and practical things, lots of digital aids, love specwars and getting the latest and greatest. But I just have to admit... there's something about that 1D C... the footage I've seen that comes out of this is hard to touch and it makes it look so effortless. Maybe everything else there is just trying too hard...

Isn't 'native Full HD' the key here? Indeed this is an educational tool only. And intented to be very very basic. As you read from the piece there, additional limitations can even be applied by teachers to aid the learning curve.

But are you now comparing it to the Nikon DSLRs or their (premium) compacts? Because I have the D5300 and the S9900 (the A900 seems the successor to this) and the latter doesn't feel anything like the D5300 whatsoever. Also poor build quality and loud cranky zoom motor. I'd hold my breath for these. They do seem greatly inspired by Panasonic and Sony's premium compacts and I embrace more choice, but I wouldn't get my hopes up too high.

Seems like some fine noise. Doesn't seem to affect midtones as much as the GH4. Able to retain better detail and color at higher ISOs. ISO3200 seems ok. ISO6400 is probably quite nicely recoverable with denoise plug-ins. Although this is YouTube compression and just 1 video, so who really knows.

Yeah, but that guy (that btw kinda reminds me of Rex Hunt) took his camera with him. Because you're at a friggin' shoreline when the sun is setting. That's not a situation that just pops up. You could have had a premium compact with you and still have packed lighter than the gent next to you. Yet still have the same kind of hands-on controls, some optical zoom and flexibility. In my book that's better than any phonecamera. You could get an automated smart home security system and only take a creditcard and a 100 bucks bill with you, yet you carry around keys and a filled wallet too, don't ya? But I don't like the CM1 as a smartphone. I like a smartphone as a smartphone, because it's good at being a smartphone. I like a camera because it's good at being a camera. But yeah, nothing's stopping you from getting a frankenphone of course and it does do a fair job. I don't know. To each their own of course.

I have the ZTE Nubia Z9 ( http://en.nubia.com/product/z9/summary.html ), for all intents and purposes an amazing smartphone (Samsung/iPhone-league quality and price) and in some areas ahead of its time (an actual edge-to-edge display, not just curving and still having borders around the screen, frame interactive technology!). It does have OIS, it does have 4K as well, so I'm still getting nice quality snaps. Or video, especially with the Cinema4K app where you can boost the bitrate and such. The successor coming out this year, will probably be brought to a global audience (had to import mine from China now). Just... there's nothing like an actual camera for shooting stills and video and it's like Mattias says as well, it's great to have awesome quality if else you didn't have any, so these smartphones with good features are nice to have... but... if you're set out to shoot stills and video, why bother with a smartphone if you can have a dedicated camera? It gives you all the controls and quality you need and then some. If a smartphone could be a smartphone and shoot stuff that's up there with premium cameras, sure... but if you take my smartphone and turn it into a fat frankenphone... then it's no longer a smartphone anymore and I don't want that, especially if I don't get the actual camera experience back, it's still a smartphone-like camera. And indeed, if stills and video is that important to you, is it really too much of a hassle to take a small premium compact with you? I don't think it is... yet you gain so much by doing so. But again, I can go out and say 'well, I'm not planning on shooting anything in particular, just another regular silly day' and yet have a great tool for some snaps with me using my smartphone and say 'well, I'm going out to explore the world and when I'm given the oppertunity I want to nail those shots!' and then just bring the LX100 along. If you're in the situation that there's a fine line and overlap, then sure, maybe a cameraphone is the thing for you. But if you can somehow find it in yourself to take a little dedicated camera with you, I'd recommend you to do so.

I use my phone for snaps. Little moments that don't have to be top notch quality. That kinda goes for any smartphone what I'm concerned. That said, I've seen people (e.g.) pulling amazing things from e.g. the Lumia PureView smartphones and we've seen not too shabby things from Samsung indeed as well. Remember when that Note 3 came out and Philip Bloom took it for a spin. But things like the DXO One or the CM1... nah, a smartphone = smartphone. If you want to go up in quality, don't add bulk to your phone, just get yourself a nice premium compact. The RX-series is an obvious choice, Panasonic has some great things, I adore the LX100, Nikon now joined the party. I think that is the way to go... not phones. But of course, it depends on your quality standards, what kind of flexibility you need, what kind of creative control you can exert. All of those things, so if you do end up getting a smartphone for its camera features and really fall in love with it: awesome! But for me, it isn't there. Especially if you leave out the big sensor in the equation and a nice decent range of optical zoom. My 2cts.
