Key Light (Bowens Mount) Less Expensive Than Apurture?
Teemu replied to Mark Romero 2's topic in Cameras
I have bought all my lamps in good condition used via eBay. Yeah, I was looking them around for quite a long time. Some parts I have directly ordered from Pixapro. I am not sure if they deliver worldwide or not. But understand that shipping might get quite high. I believe these are lights that many doesn’t even know that exist. Really good lights. Only thing I wish is that these had a bit harder light. But for that I have used cheap chinese bowens fresnel adapters, those help. I have experience on using these in really cold weather in Finnish winter outside like -15 degree. They have had no problems. Also one time assistant made one of these fall from 2,5m height down to ground. I was sure it will be a dead unit. But no, still works and I still use it! -
Key Light (Bowens Mount) Less Expensive Than Apurture?

I can give a vote for these: I have in my set 4x Pixapro 100D MK II and 1x 200D. Those 100D MK II have the + model also which means those can be powered with V-lock battery. There is optional wireless remote sold separately which I recommend. With one remote I can control all of my units. These have fans but those are really quiet, never had any audio problems even in interview shoots. -
I have 2x 64GB Sandisk Extreme PRO SD UHS-II 300MB/s. And I can confirm that I was a bit dissapointed. These can’t do dual recording. Camera just says it needs two exact same kind cards. Even though those are exact same kind. But, those aren’t marked with V90 so I can’t complain I guess. Otherwise those have worked perfectly never stopped recording with highest settings on my GH5.

This is a nice cinemagraph "story": Not so much story involved more like beautiful images in one scene. But like it as it is. I also myself like to do cinemagraphs. Also really like to make cinemagraph moments from movies that I love. That way give them new feeling and the respect those need. Those I just upload for my instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/vinovinkkeli/

Good looking colortones. Want to see rest of it keep up the good work!

I just use simple card holder wallet that's waterproof and have a simple method: Leftside of the wallet I keep empty unused ones sticker face up = empty cards. On rightside of the wallet I put cards "facedown" (non-sticker side facing up) = used cards. Simple and cheap but works. Don't buy any extra accessories for just to mark down used or unused stuff because you most likely have all the needed materials/methods for that. Just waste of money, I think. Invent your own method that best suits for you. Teach the same method to your assistants who are helping you and people who are involved with the gear that needs to be organized.

Really good looking stills. Want to see the movinh images also I have been waiting for the right moment and opportunity to get Digital Bolex for myself. I must start the hunting around eBay, again!

Really like it. Better in so many ways than the GH4. For paid jobs I really think this is a versitile and really killing combo vs more expensive and bigger cameras. But when I shoot own shortfilms, musicvideos or other more 'art' stuff I would like to have more DR, better motion, even better colors and so on. But have to say in those kind of jobs, GH5 is really capable also! Here is my latest musicvideo with GH5:

Yeah I know, I like image charracter and "imperfections" a lot too. One of the main reasons I always shoot with vintage glass, anamorphic or spherical. But sometimes too much is too much. That's why asked if it is easily fixed when you want lines to be straight.

@AaronChicago have you tried to compensate that 35mm distortion in post? I mean distortion post correction. Or does it need so much stretch for the image that it comes more or less pointless? Also can you share your experience on close focus. Its like +100cm (3'6 feet) away from the lens, right? Have you tried some diopters with the 50mm? I have experienced that I am always wanting to get even closer with anamorphic lenses. Even that my modified FM lens + Kowa can focus as close as 40cm. And that is without any diopters. What ND solution you use? Am I right that these SLR Magic 2x Anamorphic primes does rotate from the front when focused, so it might be a problem with VariND... Many questions but I hope you could share your thoughts and experiences on these things. Thanks in advance! -Teemu-

@AaronChicago looks great. A bit too sharp for my like. Is it just the lenses? How was your V-log setting sharpening -5? You shot at 50/60fps 8bit everything? These SLR Magic lenses are interesting. I would like to test those out. I have shot anamorphic quite a lot with my GH5 but would love to have some native anamorphic lenses. Free from adapter problems and just native lenses. There is just that I am not sure if I like the image those produce or not... Do you also shoot anamorphic stuff with your GH5 combined with vintage anamorphics?

@Nicholson Ruiz I would not over think about matching perfectly two different cameras. When you are making musicvideo I would use it as an tool. Even make it more clear that those are really different looking cameras. And talking about different looks.. in my opinnion the biggest problem in video is too much same size&looking images through the video. There is no closeups, no extreme close ups, really wide angle, crazy camera angles and so on... I would move and search much more interesting angles. That way you keep people much more hooked for the video. If it just same kind of shots with same framing it gets very boring quickly.

Thanks for commenting and giving feedback! Different kind of videos and different kind of songs. In this I wanted to leave time for the images. Long transitions, slow and more poetry like. The other one is definetly more narrative driven. To be fair, this video was just a bit too much for our micro crew to handle in the given time. I would like to have had one more shooting day for this, but can't get everything. Both videos are made with micro crew and micro budget (or no budget). But that is not a reason for good or bad video, not at all. Just a fact.

Thanks for the comments. Taking lens is 50mm 2.8 russian macro lens. Really love that lens. Volna-9 is the lens. Really nice flares, bokeh, colors. Everything is just something that I really like on this lens. It has also special aperture charracter between f5.6-f8, it's star shape. PS. Still late with the realease. Video has been ready for almost a month now... Still waiting the band to officially release the video.

As others has mentioned it depends a lot of your shooting style and what you want from your lenses. I had several m43 native lenses used them but never was quite happy. Too sharp, too digital, not good for manual use (which I use always) not enough charracter. So I sold everything and invested in Canon FD glass fully cine converted (machined to EF mount, clickless, standard mattebox/filter sizes) and haven't regred the decission a day. Also have many old soviet lenses if I am even more charracter hungry. Have used many Canon modern L lenses also: 16-35, 24-70, 70-200 and primes 24, 35, 50, 85, 135. Nice glass, sharp images and like the Canon warm tone. But those lenses are not for video use. Focus throw sucks, zooms are always loosing the focus when touched even a bit and also heavy compared to vintage FF lenses. But consider your style and likes to shoot. It might be best for YOU to keep already owned glass and adapt them to new camera. Always invest in glass not in camera body. It's easier to invest good future proof glass than camera.

Okay, didn't know this... Also want to update status on the case of my Lexar card. (Old topic got locked so can't put it there) It will be sended over to Lexar laboratory at UK. Below is straight copy from email they sent me. Regarding our data recovery process, we will take your card back and attempt recovery for you in our East Kilbride lab in the UK. If this is successful, the recovered data will be sent on DVDs or copied onto your replacement card and sent to you that way. Should the recovery not be successful in East Kilbride, we will send the card on to our headquarters in Milpitas, California, where it will be dismantled so the NAND can be accessed directly. This process can take up to 12 weeks. Please note, image recovery service is a courtesy for our Lexar Professional customers and is not part of our warranty. The recovery process does not guarantee the recovery of images as the nature of data loss on flash technology can vary. The card will be replaced under the warranty but during the recovery process, the original may be destroyed. So... time will tell what is the conclusion on this case.

Yeah, maybe you are right. But for sure I know even if it is just disconnecting from the card or some other card related operation, it may burn your card if ejected at that time. Stupid me, human error. I will do human errors in future also and other people too. Only backups can save in situations like that.
-
Gh5 can't read or format the corrupted card. I was playing back our last shot everything was working great. I returned to shoot mode, turned off the camera and then took the card too soon out. Maybe when there is still this Lumix screen in monitor. Just a second too early. I was not recording or playing back when ejected the card. I think it's because camera was still shutting down and making some last "writings/markings" to card. Also I have noticed when you flipp open the memory card door. GH5 sometimes writes/flashes the card slots like one second some times. Don't know is it possible to burn card on that moment. It's really wierd because sometimes it does it sometimes not.
-
Well I have bought it from reputable local retail store. And I lnow they buy items from official Lexar dealer from Finland. But how could I ever know where they buy the cards... More likely I think I burned and completely destroyed the card when it was making some "last markings" when shutting down. It's the only logic way how it got destroyed so badly.

@Fritz Pierre, Well said. There is definitely learning for everybody. Backup, backup and backup = even to the level where others think you are paranoid with backup's. OR Re-shoot, re-shoot and re-shoot = you will have stomach ulcer thanks to the stress and lowered lifetime expectation.
