Either way it seems to me that Canon has some issues here with either the $2,999 version or he $4995 version...ala the XC10 and C300 MKII respectively. Depending on the images - how could you possibly rationalize spending $15,000 over $4995. I was about to sell my EF glass but now......not so much. I could see how (down the road) my GH4 could be my B camera........... just sayin..........

I'll just assume specifications across the market will continue improve and say, I think the combination of ergonomics and price point that speak to one man operators on a budget are very important....... and there-in lies a virtual Gold Mine for anyone who chooses to go there.

Seems like a bit of a mixed bag with the lens and the price. With the addition of log recording on the GH4 (fingers crossed)........... well, Ill keep my GH4.

I'm no expert like some of you are but the way I see it, what could make this camera an earthquake in the market would be if the images it makes are at least as good as an Alexa...at a fraction of an ARRI price point. Enthusiast wise of course its just a dream, but if it can really go head to head with ARRI ..... THATS going to be an important competitive force. Thats going to make people who just about have enough money, work harder to get one.

The first thing that popped into my head was that GoPro must know that their virtual dominance in this market space would only last so long before serious competition comes along. Canon on the other hand if they do this right could use a camera like this to FINALLY get into the software and new on-line media game. A space that they have virtually ignored until now. They might leverage this in any number of ways. Hmmm

I dont know much about the X70 but SONY generally speaking (the XDCAM Family) has a very solid reputation for durability in broadcast. The large 1" sensor should be a good compromise for depth of field using a standard camcorder form facter. You get SDI and full sized HDMI out and XLRs,built-in ND filters and more. I hear that the pending 4k upgrade will be about $550.... so with 4k your still under $3,000. This camera combined with (when you can afford it) a good DSLR and between the two, you'll have a camera for every purpose under the sun. BTW Ive seen footage from the X70 mixed and graded with both the A7s and GH4, looking good. Oh and lowlight with this looks pretty good. Their not moving into software and other current sharing technologies shows where their commitment has not been. Whats maddening is Not just ML firmware but what Canon did in sending signals to others that turn out to be mixed signals …… As far as video goes... Canon early on by their participation in video signaled to third party venders they were committed to the market and cool accessories were developed and brought to market. Now we realized based on their reaction to Magic Lantern and their lack of participation in new media, they were not committed at all. Now as I search for a good little USB remote for my GH4, I find the cool affordable remotes were ONLY developed for Canon based on what those venders interpreted as Canon's commitment at the time. Upon reaching out, I find one vender no longer has the resources to develop a new product for Panasonic or SONY. The other is working on something - who knows how long that will take. The result for uses has been not good at all.

Does anyone have a 6 plus and can tell me what 1 min of video is in size? I heard around 130MB's. Im considering buying one and I'm wondering. Thanks

​Hahaha ---- I think if you did a blind test with footage shot by someone really good and graded by someone really good no one would be able to tell. I agree with you 100%

​Pictorvision (formerly WESCAM) said the two cameras they fly on unmanned helis are Epics and GH4's. Thats for feature film and brodcast work.

A comment that caught my attention. That its much more challenging for professional photographers to make a good living now more then ever. Thats a thought thats not unimportant in that the market has shrunk. One of my close friends spent a few years working as a wedding photographer, super talented and very busy and making good money has seen some slowdown. He has friends who are hurting and those people wont be buying a new Canon anytime soon. In fact comments are now about what NIKON is doing. I think that the 5D MK II started a video revolution by accident. I think it caught Canon by surprise. I think they road the wave sold a bunch 5Ds and rebels and more importantly glass. I think they used this wave to build out there Cinema line. I don’t think they were never comfortable keeping the video beat going in DLRS period for whatever reason. Problem is the market is evolving very fast and the market it not the same now as it was 5 years ago. Not in terms of technology and not in terms of who is buying cameras now and how many of them there are and for what purpose. Canon is too conservative and moves to slow for whats going on now…… they may end up paying a heavy price.

This is not just about hybrid cameras of course. But both SONY and Panasonic have vastly more diversified income streams then Canon. Im no expert here but it seems to me that Canon has the least flexability in terms the choices they make.

Its a calculated risk for Canon to react this way for whatever reason, and it may turn out to be a risky move that will be a major miss-step for them. It seem that making printers and lenses and etc, as well as the best darn still cameras out there is not enough right now -- ?

Its an interesting argument, one thats arguable with people coming down on all sides of it. Canon may very well want to create a barrier, but ultimately of course what sells you is years of experience doing good work with whatever camera you have at your disposal. Work thats truly inspired comes in many camera form factors. Its a combination of tools, the skills and the talent to use them.

Corporations like people will do what they really want to do period. I agree with Andrew what Canon wants to do is preserve 4k for the C300 space. I might be they roll 4k in their pro video camcorder space by NAB this year but as far as LSS cameras, its going to be C300 I think. bertzie Your right but for the fact that Canon created huge DSLR Video market with the 5D. Sold and sold it, created a new customer base for glass just based on that, and now appears to be walking away from it. Of course they are free to do whatever they want...and your still right, its a stills camera.

If Canon was Apple (a company that never does anything haphazard announcement or “leak” wise), then you would have to extrapolate the new camera is first and foremost for stills and not video period. They still need to stay ahead of the game, professional still photo wise after all.

Yep ....... fact is the lines are getting very blurry in image quality land. By CES/NAB 2016, which camera you buy (based on image quality alone) wont matter much. For most people out there, their work wont be seen by that many people anyway so it really does come down to personal preference in the end, and as I already said the differences are shrinking very fast.

Ive been reading all the debate about Canon on this web site, and I have a agree with Andrew's take on it overall. It hit as I was looking at the Consumer Electronic Show news today that SONY has two new consumer 4k camcorders that have been announced and Panasonic has one as well. All for under $1000. They are just consumer cameras but they represent lots of aggressive technologies, and at least they are in the game. I thought - Hey lets see what Canon has ........ Crickets chirping. Some new point and shoot cameras ( really?) and a few cheap HD camcorders but overall their line up right now looks about two years old at least, maybe three years. They are talking about new stuff at NAB this year but, well have to wait and see how aggressive they can get at this "late" date.
