  1. Exactly. As a former Nikon I could see myself getting back but only with a decent mirrorless Nikon camera. But the more they wait, the more features need to be included. Sure they will get ergonomics better that Sony, but they will also need to add 4k, IBIS, trusty AF, great EVF, silent shutter with no distortion, etc... It's getting hard to catch up...
  2. Except the viewfinder style from GX8, I find the add-on viewfinders much more comfortable to use. Also the idea of modular camera is more appealing to me. I was never impressed by Leica's low range offerings (<$3000 ) but the TL2 looks to be the first camera that has a proper touchscreen/menu implementation. Especially if you own plenty of M glass, this is a very nice solution.
  3. I agree with Andrew, they could just take away the mirror & OVF from 1DXMk2, put a decent EVF + clog and call it a day. Maybe a decent codec as well. Now how it would affect the C200 sales I don't know, but at least to my eyes they wouldn't overlap that much even at similar price points.
  4. Update: With High Sierra Apple finally natively supports eGPUs! https://egpu.io/forums/mac-setup/apple-is-supporting-external-gpus-with-high-sierra/paged/2/
  5. There are all sorts of luts and no rule how and when to apply them. Delog luts, camera matching luts, film emulation luts, calibration luts, creative luts, etc and any combination of those or even make custom ones like @hyalinejim. Usually the color correcting technical luts are applied at the beginning and the creative ones at the end. I am mostly use film emulation (like Fuji color profiles) and creative luts (the collection from @benymypony) . I also use the latter as the last step when grading photographs.
  6. When I tested the akitio node with the Titan X and the MBP 13" 2016 everything worked fine. It is not strictly plug&play & system files will have to be modified even if automatically. You will need to run a script found here. Since then, I believe AMD cards are supported as well, which should give much better performance with FCPX than NVIDIA (see here), but I haven't tested them. When Apple starts certifying these enclosures, things will be even easier. There was a rumor for this WWDC, but who knows.. Only the 2015 airs have TB2 so I don't know how much bottleneck the TB1 port will be for NLE use. Here is a report with an eGPU & a 2013 Air: https://egpu.io/forums/implementation-guides/mid-2013-13-mba-macbook-air-akitio-thunder2-gtx-950-tb1/#post-3260 Even if I can tell you that it will most probably work, I don't know if it is worth it. If you use it only on as a desktop it might be better to just sell it and build a cheap hackintosh for about the same money as the eGPU enclosure + GPU + whatever you can get for your Air.
  7. I assume you want to stay with FCPX & mac on a laptop. If that is the case, you will have a choice between the 13" and 15" version of the macbook pro. The advantages of the 15" are screen size, quad core CPU and discrete GPU. The advantages of the 13" are is small size . If you don't mind the size of the 15", then definitely get a 15". But in case you want something smaller, even the 13" will be quite a bit faster since you are coming from an old dual core CPU, especially when coupled with an AMD eGPU. The good thing with older macs is that they have thunderbold ports and they can be used with an external GPU to significantly improve the performance of the NLE. See what options you have for a used macbook pros. If you don't want to go the eGPU route, then your best price/performance would be a used 2015 15" with dGPU and 16gb RAM, otherwise get a late 2013 or later since they come with TB2 ports, and 13" or 15" with 16gb RAM . Just keep in mind that the eGPU solution will be at least $300, so take that into account when figuring out the costs.
  8. Hard to go wrong with the sigma 18-35 and a speedbooster on GH5 unless you need weatherproofing I agree with the rest, get the 12-35 f/2.8 but you should also handle the Olympus version that has hard stops in you don't use AF that much.
  9. https://arstechnica.com/security/2017/05/mac-users-installing-popular-dvd-ripper-get-nasty-backdoor-instead/ "Anyone who has installed version 1.0.7 should check the SHA1 checksum of the installation file. Readers can check this sum by opening the Mac terminal, typing "shasum /path/to/HandBrake-1.0.7.dmg" where "path/to" is the folder location where the installation file is found. (People can also type "shasum" in the Terminal and then drag the installation file into the Terminal window.) If the sum that's returned is "0935a43ca90c6c419a49e4f8f1d75e68cd70b274," the file is malicious. Anyone who installed the malware should take action as soon as possible. To disinfect a Mac, remove the Launch Agent plist file fr.handbrake.activity_agent.plist, and the activity_agent.app file located in ~/Library/RenderFiles/. Then reboot the machine. Once the Mac is disinfected, users should change all passwords."
  10. Can you export it as a LUT and share it as well? When & if Panasonic allows baked-in LUTs, it would make this really useful.
  11. How about the ability to have baked in LUTs? That would give amazing color control and also produce better results than doing it in post.
  12. Because with the eGPU I don't need to have a second computer. I can do the rough cuts while on the road and then connect the eGPU with as many monitors as I wish while on a desk and not have to worry about transferring files, projects etc... While definitely not the solution for everyone, it is great for those who need to use a laptop. Moreover, for mac users it is currently the only solution if you want to upgrade your GPU, whether you use a mac pro / imac / macbook pro. For example, you want to use these new pascal cards from NVIDIA in order to make Resolve way faster? No problem
  13. If a Sony rep says this, you should get the hint. http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sony-marketing-guy-says-telephoto-lenses-are-in-the-works/#disqus_thread
  14. Yes but in the specific instance it should get the GH5 as close to the Ursa as possible since that is the neutral starting point, you match to your A cam. If you need grading on top of an LUT to get to the neutral starting point then you need a better LUT.
  15. I adjusted the contrast with the curves for both GH5 versions and I warmed up the Kholi. It should be easy to tell them apart. Kholi's version is not bad but it looks too flat for my taste. I don't know @Hanriverprod, I think I still stand by my previous assessment that the original grade looks better and closer to the BM which should be the target when matching cameras. Maybe a better grade than mine can help, but then whats the point of using the LUT in the first place
  16. The highlights look better, but I actually prefer the skin tones of your (original) grade.
  17. Here is the eGPU enclosure that I have on preorder in case anyone is interested. I will try to install 2x 8TB 3.5" drives with a tiny raid controller in RAID1 for backup inside this little box. In few weeks I will tell you how that went.
  18. There is already a V2 version that should be shipping soon. Then for a bit (quite a bit) more money there is the pilotfly H2-45 with no LCD obstruction: http://pilotfly.com.tw/index.php?id_product=32&controller=product No "real" reviews have been posted yet of either product.. Looking for one as well.
  19. Correct, if a gaming laptop was an option then the eGPU would offer minimal performance gains. But I needed a small portable laptop that I can easily carry with me every day on the bike without loosing the ability to do complex color grading while I am sitting on a desk.
  20. With the eGPU solution you are essentially upgrading to a desktop GPU which greatly benefits most NLEs. From the late 2013 and onwards macs had the TB2 which is really close to the TB3 of the latest version. The CPUs haven't really changed that much. For example, the I7-4960HQ the top end CPU of the late 2013 15", performs about the same as the I7-6920HQ of the latest generation. So yeah with a late 2013 15" is totally worth getting an eGPU for video editing and not upgrading to the latest model
  21. I tested it for few days and after I was convinced that an eGPU can be beneficial for video editing, I returned it but only to preorder the Mantiz Venus case that offers ethernet port, 90W charging, USB3 ports and internal sata, for $80 off the list price ( official site, review). If you have the late 2013 15" version with the TB2 ports, then you are set with an eGPU solution since the performance gains are very close to the TB3. Even the 13" should be fine. Definitely worth trying it out. TB1 of the earlier models should also be good but look around at https://egpu.io/forums for details. Few notes: 1. With FCPX an AMD card makes more sense but back when I did the testing AMDs were not working. Now I read they are working again and people report great results with FCPX. In my case with the GTX titan, it helped with effects/motion, but not so much for transcoding. The AMD will be better at everything (https://egpu.io/forums/mac-setup/best-amd-card-for-fcpx-compatibility/#post-6010). Davinci Resolve performs admirably with NVIDIA GPUs and a dual core laptop with a good GPU should be enough for most projects. Premiere's effects are accelerated as well, but most other things are bound to the CPU speed so not a good solution for a dual core laptop. 2. There is no hot-plug capability so the computer needs to be off while plugging/unplugging. 3. Make sure you buy the correct enclosure depending on the TB port 4. These solutions are not certified by Apple so there is always the chance an update will fuck things up ... Definitely proxies. Yes, it takes time to create them but if you work for long on your projects then it is worth it. Depending on your workflow you might find that disabling automatic rendering can help but there is not much else that you can do. As you saw in my original post the performance gain (at least for transcoding) when moving from the 12" to the 13" is much greater than going from the 13" to the 15". I found throttling very problematic, even after scrubbing through proxie footage so I knew I had to get something faster. If you have the budget and you need portable video editing but a small package then the 13" is your best bet. For FCPX, the 480 is probably better but really not that much of a difference worth spending so much money on. But if you use Resolve or Premiere then a GTX10xx will be miles better You will find plenty of threads with iMacs and eGPUs here: https://egpu.io/forums/?wpfd=0&wpfob=date&wpfo=desc&wpfs=imac&wpfin=titles-only
  22. Nice, I didn't even know I could do this! The nice thing about Capture One is that it shows a preview while scrolling through the LUTs/ICCs, with Lightroom it seams I have to select it and then push perceptual and then relative once again. But at least now there is no need for photoshop anymore and your previewer program works great anyways! ( though an addition that I would consider is to have a some form of gallery with different LUTs like is shown here).
  23. Wait are you talking about using it as a printer profile? Thats they only option that I see with Lightroom. Is there something that I am missing? With Capture One you can use ICC as a camera profile (again can't optimize intensity).
  24. Unfortunately this solution is not compatible with Lightroom but only capture one...
  25. I have been using these more for grading photos than videos recently. For the longest time I was trying to find a way to use it with Lightroom without the need to roundtrip to Photoshop but I did not have any luck. Then I gave the Capture One a try and I managed to convert the LUTs to ICC profiles that can be loaded in the program. Success! Now you can easily add these LUTs to your photos although you will loose the ability to partially add the LUT or use any camera specific ICC profile. Here is the link with the compiled ICC files: EDIT I just figured out I shouldn't share this since it was Benjamin's LUTs. @benymypony I sent you a link with the files if you want to add them to your drive folder.
