Yep. If you know that you are moving to a new laptop soon then it might not be the wisest choice to spend a couple hundred dollars on a case that you will not use on the new computer. Your heat sink should be fine, it is just that the instructions are the same if you need to replace the paste between the CPU and the heat sink.

Most laptops need repasting after few years, so I suggest you do that. Here you can find instructions on how to get there: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Retina+Display+Mid+2012+Heat+Sink+Replacement/10293 Even though it is still TB1 it can use an eGPU I believe, which can make a tremendous difference for premiere. Try this forum: https://egpu.io/forums/mac-setup/. I would still try to contact Apple, since you might be able to still repair it for free (or even replace it).

The typical caveats of cheap ND filters is color cast and excessive flaring. I started with a $20 variable on the E-M1 but when I moved to A7rii the quality loss due to color cast was just too much so I moved up to the ~$60-80 price range in order to get acceptable results for my use. If you want to buy just once and have the best results then you will have to spend the money cause it does make a difference.

Yes gimbals is one of the reasons you need good AF. Personally I find AF very useful when I have to use deep DoF. Because with shallow DoF you can easily tell from the LCD with or without focus assist where the focus is, but with f/5.6 and above it becomes pain in the ass to accurately estimate the focus point unless you have a large external monitor. So many times I have ended up with slightly blurred footage because I though I focused correctly. I say no more, and its my belief that for a consumer video oriented camera proper AF is a must.

At least with the A7rii, I have never experienced overheating since the camera came out. But again if you are doing interviews or any other long recording then yes a GH5 is better and I can't see how Sony can fix it easily with a FF sensor in a small body. Color science is great with the Sony once you play with the settings! It is really. One of the reasons that I don't want to get the GH5 is the customization that Sony provides, and the footage that I have seen up until now from GH5 is not better in any way. Only some GH5 footage from J.Miller with his custom LUTs showed really really nice looking skin so while it is capable it needs post work (as Kholi mentioned as well). In my experience IBIS is better than any OIS, but it would be great if they can match EM1ii (doubt it). From the footage that I have seen from GH5 it is better than the Sony but not close to the Olympus. that would be great I assume you meant LCD? If yes then please no. One of the reasons I don't want the GH5 is the flip out LCD which makes it very clumsy and hard to use in a looking down shooting style. In any case, I think it would be wise to wait at least until NAB to see what is coming from the competition. As @elgabogomez mentioned, if they allow some kind of 10bit output and make the camera a bit faster to operate it would be already enough for me.

I placed an order minutes after the preorders came online, but after I watched all the GH5 AF tests I canceled it. The occasional back & forth hunting looks so bad in a video that it will deter me from using it at all. On most other aspects GH5 is a great camera, but I am so used to the very good AF from A7rII that is some times great to have. Moreover I wasn't convinced that I can get better color out of the camera from the GH5 compared to the A7rii with a custom profile. It would be great if panasonic allowed custom LUTs to be burned in in camera, which would allow for extreme customizations with very little post work necessary.

EOSHD is a great community. Not having eye-puncturing ads is a huge plus as well. But as yoclay mentions, it needs to be a positive place. Criticism and negativity should be kept apart. I do enjoy the personal style of the articles, but as evident in this thread negativity spreads fast and nothing really comes out at the end. 10bit from GH5 is of course quite usable and Cinema5D is wrong on many things, but the color blotchiness (YUV chroma smearing) is a real problem and of course not only with Panasonic cameras (and not only to 8bits). Cinema5D does look biased cause any A7x camera with Slog suffers with the same problem, but lets focus on what we need: a better codec. It is unfortunate that companies seem to listen only with these extreme but easily spreading titles but it has been done in this forum as well. In any case, I hope the codec in summer helps a bit and all camera companies focus to improve their codecs.

I don't know if it is the same thing, but a while back I found out a similar difference between Premiere, Resolve and FCPX:

My thoughts on the Kipon Medium Format "Speedbooster"
Don Kotlos replied to Mattias Burling's topic in Cameras
Adding to the post from @jcs: The FoV (or angle of view for photography/videography) relative to the sensor size and focal length is given by the following equations: Horizontal FOV = 2 * arctan( SensorWidth / EffectiveFocalLength) Vertical FOV = 2 * arctan( SensorHeight / EffectiveFocalLength) Here is what happens when you move the camera relative to an object (Changing the FoV only keeps the transversed magnification constant to make the perspective changes easier to spot) : -

I believe you are confusing FoV with perspective. FoV depends on the focal length and sensor size. -

Again perspective depends only on the distance from the lens. It does NOT depend on the focal length and it does NOT depend on the sensor size. -
I agree that would be amazing.

You are right it is not just the bit depth but James Miller did the tests already with an external recorder and showed that these artifacts are still there. You need to have an LUT baked-in in order to get much better results. That is "YUV chroma smearing". So it is not just the codec but the whole pipeline including the Vlog. It is visible in other footage from GH5 as well: and the links that explain it posted from @bunk That happens also with the s-log from Sony's but I hope the new codec in the summer can fix it.

2nd of March: BlackmagicDesign Camera & DaVinci Resolve Press Conference
Don Kotlos replied to Phil A's topic in Cameras
Let them choose the resolution, but let me choose the shutter: Global please -
I would say: Give me any camera with BlackMagic specs, a tilting LCD, Nikon Flat in prores and maybe some 5-axis IBIS for $1500 or less and I will sell off everything but my Fuji

I would say its the time to voice your needs cause Nikon might be at their peak "listening to consumers" state. But would I go too far to say that most would like a mini D5 that shoots 24fps RAW with class leading CAF? That should cover both photographers and cinematographers . By the way A9 is coming as well so things will get very interesting (wallet unfriendly) soon.

Olympus E-M1 II and Rode Stereo VideoMic X first impressions
Don Kotlos replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Thanks Andrew, nicely written. The positive atmosphere of this article reminds me a lot of the original E-M1 you did... By the way did you have a chance to look the HDMI output? I know it against the run&gun type of shooting but sometimes its nice to know that you can get something better if needed. Waves for example is something that many internal codecs have problem with or low light noise compression, or if it is possible to have 4k to 1080p downscaling so we can use a ninja star... -

Yes but since its physics we are talking about it is just sad. -
James Miller ran a test in which he recorded externally from GH5 with Vlog and he either applied the LUT in post or baked it in. Even with an external recorder that offers high bitrates and very good codecs, the difference is quite big. See the color smearing ('YUV chroma smearing' ?) in many places and the color shifts in the shadows. I believe using baked in LUTs with external recorders should give better results with any camera with an HDMI log output. I hope Panasonic implements a way to have baked in LUTs with Vlog internally. But I guess for now you can have an external recorder with the baked in look and an internal without.
-
That might explain the differences between different tests. My guess is also: Although it looks the NR is having more difficulty as well. HDMI out/ 400mbps hopefully corrects for it. Same here. Dramatic improvement, good job Panasonic!

The Leica SL as upgrade for Sony A7R II shooters
Don Kotlos replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Yeah I am sure you do :D Also don't confuse resolution with aliasing artifacts. Did you actually read the original article? I don't get your negative attitude. -
The Leica SL as upgrade for Sony A7R II shooters
Don Kotlos replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
DPReview posted the studio video samples. SL is just bad with aliasing artifacts everywhere, both in 1080 and 4k. I couldn't find a camera that performed worse. Shit, even the A7rii 4K in FF which many bitch about is better (last sample bellow). Color is not great either. Spending $7.5K to shoot video with this thing sounds just crazy to me. -
At least on Nikon lenses while de-clicking is very easy and it gives a continuous aperture change, it makes the aperture ring rotate almost too easily so you really have to be careful not to accidentally change it. You can apply some lens silicon lube to bring back some friction but you have to be careful not to spill this on the lens elements or the camera mount.
