  1. GH4 is a great camera but it is actually worse than A6300 when it comes to moire & aliasing artifacts. See in this comparison:
  2. Well unless Panasonic was bought by Canon overnight, it is not going to be MJpeg. H264 is my guess. I hope you are not saying that having the options of 150 & 400mbps but not 200-250 is disappointing, but the fact it will arrive later this year.
  3. In premiere: 1. Select all the clips you want to change metadata for 2. Select 'metadata' from the 'Window' menu. 3. Change info for multiple items in the metadata panel.
  4. "Its now confirmed, the GH5 will offer maximum bit rate of 400Mbps in 4K video! The 400Mbps will come as a firmware update on the second half of 2017. Right now, the the camera will be launched with 150Mbps." Get your cards ready! (yes the ones that are not available yet )
  5. How fast storage you need really depends on the type of files. In most cases >300MB/s is enough for the project media. For best performance media cache & scratch files should be in a separate (from OS) very fast drive. Don't waste your money on raiding SSDs for project media files. For a 2 drive solution with spinning drives to give you that kind of speed you will need to use RAID 0 in which case this is a TEMPORARY storage. You will need to have these files in another place at all times. RAID 6/10 can give you that kind of performance with redundancy but you will need at least a 4 drive bay. And yes, performance drops as these drives are filled up so if your media files are 8TB plan to have at least 10TB. See here for some drive optimizations for Premiere (which can easily be extended for other NLEs): https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Adobe-Premiere-Pro-CC-2015-4-Storage-Optimization-854/ Its very detailed and you will need to look at RAW benchmark results as well.
  6. It depends on the 4K files & the effects that you use. If you use proxies you might be fine with just a GPU upgrade. See here for a series of tests with premiere:
  7. And thats the problem right now for many people. If you are an Adobe or a Resolve user you are getting half the performance for double the price compared to a $1500 XPS 15. For example: Also, by reducing the battery capacity a macbook pro now doesn't give you any better battery performance anymore . Under load it even gets worse... For that money you are better off getting an XPS 15 AND building a hackintosh (if you want FCPX) that performs even better than the Mac Pro: Here is an interesting take: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-12-20/how-apple-alienated-mac-loyalists I know the mac accounts for 10% of the sales and the "pros" account in the best case 10% of that, but Apple really needs to focus on the "pro" side of the mac once again cause alienating %80 of the NLE users (without even counting resolve users) is not going to bring more sales.

  9. Can not be done as easy as Resolve. You can always manually adjust colors while looking at the vector scope but that is just too tedious. The easiest would be using Resolve's color matching and then export an LUT that you can use in Premiere.
  10. It depends on the kind of handheld shooting that you do. Few examples: - For simple relatively static shots where you don't move your body, the monopod can give you a very good result. - A Roxant-type stabilizer is good when you want to take short shots where you move both your body and the camera. But with this you are loosing MF so its either AF or fixed F. - A shoulder rig is excellent for longer recording times, letting your hands do the focusing & zooming while your body lifting most of the weight and keeping the camera kind of stable. I would not suggest a rig in case you are the run&gun type since they take time to setup up and are not easy to carry around. Also you cannot change the PoV easily. - Lastly if you plan to walk while shooting my suggestion would be to invest in an active gimbal.
  11. Think of it like this, you cannot get any extra information from the original file. So whatever information is in the original 4K 8bit 4:2:0 clip, that or most probably less than that will be in the file that you would transcode to. But of course an original 10bit 1080p 4:4:4 file from another camera file could very well carry more color information from a compressed 4K 8bit 4:2:0 file. Most of the time you will be better off editing/grading the original 4K file even if you final output is 1080p 10bit.
  12. DBounce I see your points and I agree with many of them. That's why I got the new mac. But at the end of the day it did not do the work so it went back. Resale value is not something that most professionals look when they are buying equipment. Yes, FCPX performance is great. But if you try comparing the performance with another program like davinci resolve you are in for a unpleasant surprize. And no, FCPX is not a replacement for everything like Adobe after effects or Davinci resolve for example. Well other companies have this support and even better. In my personal experience with Lenovo Thinkpads and Dells they came in my office and fixed it next day. So I didn't even have to leave my work to visit a "genius". I totally see your FCPX point and I agree, that's why I got one. But professionals that work with video often need more that what FCPX can provide, and for those people the optimizations in FCPX do not make a difference. It's not random that every reviewer out there recommends a windows computer if you don't use FCPX. It certainly was the case before, but I have honestly not seen this support on the last few iterations. Let me give you few examples: 1. I bought the 2015 mcbook 12", and after few days few keys stopped working. Looking around it was a very common thing for the newly released butterfly mechanism. Now even though I believe this should have been sorted out before the laptop gets released, I said ok it's first iteration an error in design that cannot really be fixed is expected so I bought the 2016 version hoping it did. Nope. Same thing. And it's not just me, I have plenty of people around me with the same problem. 2. For the sake of thinness or whatever reason they decreased the battery capacity on the new macs by 30%. Of course that gave worse battery performance than previous models and far below the 10 hours claimed even with all the macos optimization. People complain and what does apple do? They just remove the remaining estimate, without doing anything to improve the battery performance. 3. Many people had graphics problems, and hanging systems and apple released an update to address these issues. But it did not. At least in my case the computer kept crashing. There is no fight between Mac or PC. All companies and laptops have their strengths and weaknesses. But I do sincerely hope that Apple gets their act together and all these problems are fixed because many people like yourself that depend on FCPX on mobile computers don't really have a choice. And for those people my suggestion is to wait an iteration until all these are sorted out.
  13. My comment wasn't directed to you but the general consensus that an Apple computer is worth the premium price even with lousy specs. I also think these are crazy prices anyways. Another funny point is that I have experienced far more crashes, hangs, bugs and things not working with the latest Mac laptops than I have with any other windows laptop. Keys get stuck on a weekly basis on my mb 12 ffs. Sure macos is polished and FCPX is optimized but right now it is just not reliable.
  14. Isn't it funny how a top spec'ed Razer blade pro that costs $4499 and has a 17.3" screen, mechanical keyboard, 32GB ram, RAID 0, all the ports that you will ever need, the best desktop graphics card out there (that costs $600 just by itself), in a relatively thin package, appears much more overpriced than a top spec'ed MacBook "Pro" that costs just $200 less . Anyways, the XPS 15 9560 with the 1050GTX that comes out in January will be yet another very attractive mobile solution. I was very happy with mine.
  15. Quick update: I tested the 2.7 455 version with all the latest updates for few days and here are my thoughts: - Its more quiet than before but temperatures routinely reach 100 deg celcius when editing. - I am happy with the keyboard but it can get loud. I just hope they fixed the sticking keys issue with the butterfly mechanism than I had on multiple Macbooks. - Performance is OK, but the thing keeps crashing all the time (yes I have the latest updates), and at one time the video just went crazy on me: After restarting the screen had a bad flicker for few hours. I was just about to try editing a project with FCPX, but after the last crash it is just going back. I cannot risk loosing any work. - Battery life when editing is bad. It does not really affect me that much but some might be annoyed more. - No SD card reader really? That was the worst part of the new model. So my suggestion would be to wait for the new model that will come next year with better battery life, better CPU, 32GB of DDR4 ram and hopefully no bugs. This version is just macbook "pro".
  16. I have been using the videomicro since it came out. Its a great directional mic for its compact size that performs better than the internal mic. For example here is my run & gun setup that fits in a bag without having to take the mic off. It really depends how much you value portability vs quality. If you were comparing it to the rodeo mic pro I would say maybe give it a try, but if NTG4 is your baseline you might be disappointed. It doesn't really approach the quality of NTG4 at the same subject distance but at least the closer you get the smaller the differences are since a major part of the noise comes from the internal amps. I would say for its price is worth it, but don't expect miracles.
  17. Of course not since cameras have their own calibration, but if you want to adjust the how bright/dark a scene is in Resolve you have to use gain. The point of this post is about changes in hues that occur even with no clipping in Premiere Lumetri color panel when adjusting either the exposure/contrast/curves.

    DPAF Lenses?

Yep, Canon STM lenses are preferable for situations that mic is close to the camera. You can also hear the noise from one of PB AF tests (11m20s):
  19. Now how did I know you are going to say this? I offer a subtle grade and you close your eyes, I make it extreme just so you can see and you don't like it because it does not agree with what you are claiming. If you actually look at the picture that I posted at the top you are going to see that Resolve does not change hue whereas Premiere with Lumetri color does. But its fine if you don't like the comparison (or the result), I am not going to argue with you any more. Maybe this thread is not for you, but for people that are (too) sensitive to differences in skin tones.
  20. It is true. Maybe its hard for you to see in this small size but the vector scope also shows a difference.
  21. Adjusting contrast with either the slider or the curves in Lumetri panel changes the hues of skin tones! Not the way it is expected to work at all. The effect is the same as with the exposure example that I have posted. If you compare it to the curves/contrast of Resolve it becomes really obvious.

  23. Come on cantsin that's a bit harsh don't you think? Once I spent few minutes in the picture profile settings I got far superior color and tonalities than I could ever get with my Olympus or Nikon cameras. You can use Andrews settings to get a Canon color or adjust them to match a Fuji base and then you can use my Fuji LUTs that I posted here to get any Fuji profile you want in post! And the reality is that it is very very very hard to find another company that offers this amount of customization for video. Especially with an 8bit codec this is a huge advantage as you also correctly mention in you last sentence. Let's keep the conversation on the positive side...
