It does make proxies but you can edit as they are being created in the background and as soon as they are done it automatically replaces the clip. That happens quite fast actually since it is a lower res proxy with a nice codec. Also when exporting it does use the original files.

You can do exactly that with Premiere. Have used the ingest feature? While In my experience the current premiere version is neither slow nor dodgy, subscription is something I hate with passion. I would really like people to bring this out more so Adobe can get their shit together and release a product that I can buy and not rent. if my job did not pay for the subscription I would definetly use resolve.

FYI if you use mic and/or headphones, you might have problem adjusting the screen. I got these pictures from a review at amateurphotographer: I typically shoot looking down on the screen and moving the camera up to eye level, with one hand adjusting focus and aperture and a mic always plugged in: Yes, for tripod use it makes more sense. But for a camera that is supposed to be used handheld I just cannot see the reason. When I tried the E-M5mkii it was a painful experience to have to flip the LCD every single time that I have to use the camera. Now that I use the mic I will not be able to adjust the screen rotation unless the LCD is not fully extended and you have to bend your neck while shooting. Not to mention when using headphones. I know some people really like articulating screens but personally this is a reason against getting this camera for handheld video.

This is supposed to be a funny post and it is getting bit away from the subject but nonetheless touches a sensitive point on what a pro laptop should be. It seems that iDongle is the new line from Apple. Having the MacBook for few months this is reality now. But on a pro line? c'mon no SD slot on a laptop that is commonly used for video/photo work? http://www.theverge.com/2016/10/27/13444262/apple-macbook-pro-2016-no-sd-card-slot A harshly written commentary: https://www.extremetech.com/computing/238878-apple-now-officially-dongle-company-happens-make-smartphones-computers And this video never gets old: Enjoy! PS David if your output has to be prores (and not dnxhr or cineform) the new Mac is what you should get. In my experience transcoding with other programs does not yield the best results, and I don't see Apple supporting anything else anytime soon: https://blogs.adobe.com/creativecloud/apple-quicktime-on-windows-update/

Thanks for the test. I can't see any obvious differences. But I also would not expect big differences with these well lit, medium contrast and relatively static scenes. It will be interesting to compare a low light scene as well since noise can be problematic with compression.

Bundles will be introduced soon with quite a bit of savings, so I am guessing a used body will be ~$1500 in 6 months.

Thanks John, any more thoughts you want to share or is it going to be a blog update? Like 10bit HDMI output ? (only way for me to justify this crazy crazy price )

That is quite a generalization there. To add 4K with 240mbps and still have no better video than em5ii, magic or drunk engineers would have to be involved . Yes 1080p looks about the same, but they have a C4K with 240mbps there for a reason right? https://kroupski.pro/reviews/505303202101-olympus-om-d-e-m1-ii/p6-stabilizer-video/ His review has better samples, one of them clearly showing that Olympus can (finally) produce excellent details. Since I used e-m5ii I can tell you with certainty that in a scene like this, it would look like "throw it in the garbage already". GH4 looks like it has better details at 3840x2160 but I would like a comparison with the C4K mode of Olympus which I believe looks sharper: Also AF seems much better: "Autofocus when shooting movies I liked. Radically improved compared to previous models. No yaw and refocusing. High sensitivity, distinct focus and fast translations, predictable operation. Excellent!" Then again a suspected price of $2000 will definitely kill it for me, at least until few months in when it drops by $500.

Ed if you want to get a new laptop for video editing, I suggest you bite the bullet and either spend the extra cash for the new MBP if you really want the mac experience or you use FCPX, or use Windows. Hackintosh on laptops rarely works well and at the end you will have a worse experience than switching to new OS altogether. If you are using Premiere/Resolve then you would not notice that many changes. Native proxies work on all programs now, so fluidity of editing should be the same. Windows laptops that offer similar build quality/aesthetics with better specs than the MBP: 1. XPS 15 / Precision 5510 2. Razer blade / Razer blade Pro

Is Adobe Premiere to blame for banding in 8bit DSLR footage?
Don Kotlos replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Log profiles with low bitrate 4:2:0 8bit codecs should only be used when it is really (I mean really) necessary like high contrast scenes. More so with slog2/3 from Sony that is one of the most aggressive log curves out there. Shooting everything in slog with codecs like that is a common mistake that leads to banding and bad tonalities. -
Most electronics depreciate very fast these days. For example a used X-Pro2 can be had for $1300. Thats a ~24% depreciation or $400 "lost". With Sony you have 30% and $300 "lost". With the current pricing model that most companies have, i.e. high introductory price that gets lowered pretty fast, it is always better to delay the purchase by at least few months and/or buy used equipment.

An FS5mkii with a FF sensor, IBIS & 10bit 4k hidden inside?

"So there are two types of people. It’s a big problem" There are not just two types of people (camera users), there are many many more. And that is not a problem, but an opportunity to make more money by targeting different needs. A company that came up with the Df should already know this.

Yes, gyros do need to be used as well, but from what I got by sampling the gyro faster they could compensate for faster motion and reduce the jello so an OIS might have been too slow. Quite possibly I am wrong and this was just a marketing spin. Anyways, I wasn't trying to defend their decision more like to offer a possible explanation and I would still prefer OIS with a camera bump . Edit: after trying to find which marketing script influenced me I found their line of argument here: " and EIS improves shaky video by maintaining a consistent framing between multiple video frames. OIS is primarily for photo, and EIS is only for video" So nothing about why the two are incompatible. camera bump it is.

Have you seen how many YT views explosive Note7s get? I bet an explosive Note7 on an Edlkrone slide would raise enough money for 2 Pixels ;). P.S. If Samsung hadn't fucked up (or I didn't care about 3rd degree burns) Note7 would be in my pocket instead of the Pixel.
-
Pixel has one of the largest sensors in mobile so even if it is f/2 it collects more light than the iphone7, offering better details and much better color. Compared to S7 it collects tiny bit less light, and the quality differences between the two are much less. The processing has more of n effect. S7 has less noise but it has the plasticky look of excessive noise reduction + oversharpening. So to me Pixel offers the best low light quality. Now OIS is quite useful in low light, but the differences between OIS and multi-frame capture in photos or OIS and EIS with gyro in video is small enough that I guess for Google not having a camera protrusion by not using OIS, was more of an advantage marketing wise. On top of that, since they use the gyroscope to compensate for motion, I am not sure how compatible it would be with OIS if there is no communication between the two. S7 doesn't even offer OIS during 4k video. For video iphone7 offers better stabilization than the Pixel. EIS with Pixel suffers from abrupt motion and algorithmic blurring artifacts. But if you are planning to shoot plenty of videos while walking, don't rely on EIS, or OIS. Get a gimbal :p .
-
Here are my thoughts after playing with the Pixel that I received just yesterday. As many have already said, quality is very similar with most top end phones. It is not a replacement for a large sensor camera, it is just useful to have when the large sensor camera is not with you (c'mon you all know that happens ). Add some skill, and you can get some useful footage out of any of these phones, that you would otherwise not have at all. Shoot a movie? Fuck no. I am not convinced by EIS yet. EIS artifacts seem worse in low light. It might have to do with the shutter speed I am not sure yet. Not that OIS is much better. If you want stabilization then you are better off with that $300 Osmo mobile gimbal. I mean miles better. But really who is going to carry that osmo thingy around? Colors are better on the Pixel than the S7. In video makes more of a difference. Bad flares. You can also notice them on the sample videos posted in this thread. I would say photos are better on the Pixel as well, but Samsung has the best camera app. I doubt the average phone user would notice, but if you take photography seriously and you want to have full manual control then you are better off with the S7. Or download another app . As a side note: I wasn't planning on using google assistant, but damn this thing just works.

I would go with the wd wireless pro: https://www.wdc.com/products/portable-storage/my-passport-wireless-pro.html

There are quite few reviews out there, but non of them offered extensive review of the video. Stabilization looks alright, but interestingly it looks like pixel has HDR video during non-stabilized videos. Look at the much lower noise during the non-stabilized video on the left: Here is a comparison between iphone 7, pixel, S7: Maybe a bit sharper than what I like, but colors are better than the S7 so I am happy. Unfortunately while still among the top smartphone cameras, it is nothing close to what that youtube scammer had posted

I don't know if you are joking, but that could definitely explain the amazing quality! In any case, in a couple of weeks I will know...
-
I know the final output always depends on the abilities of the user, but damn I would have never guessed this comes from a phone. No color correction...
-
Given that Olympus Achilles heel in video was the aliasing in wide deep DoF shots, this latest promo video is definitely promising. Cinematic look can be achieved with grading a flat profile, proper shutter angle and a shallow DoF
-
If color grading is your only issue with FS5, then you can try the RAW upgrade. That is if you don't mind the bulkiness of an external recorder, but at least it will get you much closer to the Raw files of BM.
