Sony FS5 firmware update version 2.0 - FS RAW costs $600 / 500 euros
Don Kotlos replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Well since quicktime is not supported and there are critical bugs, it is advisable to remove it (even adobe urges users to uninstall it) after which prores does not work in Windows anymore. By the way, there is an industry standard and it is Cineform -
I am telling you I cannot even see my mp4 videos! Have you tried it and it works? How did you do it?

Sony FS5 firmware update version 2.0 - FS RAW costs $600 / 500 euros

Prores is currently the least useful codec since it is defunct for the majority of the market. -
I bet right now it is just a drawing: "WHERE IS ALL THE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS? At this time, we are only publishing a few technical specifications. We hope to publish our final manufacture and testing specifications in early summer." Also when God is involved, you usually end up loosing money: "SHIPPING IN DECEMBER? REALLY? SERIOUSLY? Yes, shipping in December. Well sort of. We will be shipping our first units in December. With that said, we cannot guarantee this for your order. A lot of factors will determine your actual ship date including but not limited to the total number of reservations placed and your number in the reservation line. Also, any unforeseen manufacturing shortages, and of course natural disasters and/or acts of God could change things."

The fact remains: If you use Resolve and don't have QT you are screwed. I installed Resolve 12.5 and it will not see any of my videos. Totally useless. Is there a setting that I am missing? Is BM aware of this? If anyone goes to NAB can they ask them?

Indeed it does look very nice, and I like the modularity + the price. But as with all the fancy designs nowadays, unless I see an actual camera being used in the field from well respected people, there is not going to be any money transaction from my part at least.

Sony A7SII overheats in 4k mode and shutsdown
Don Kotlos replied to elementathens's topic in Cameras
Sorry to hear that Thanassi, this is not very common with A7sII/A7rii after the recent firmware update. There are few things that you can try to see if you can replicate the problem: 1. Try with another fast card formated in camera (SDXC UHSII, > 64GB). 2. Check that dual rec is off. 3. Athens shouldn't be that humid right now but try another less humid location ?. I can't think of something else, but if these don't work then I imagine it might be a faulty camera. Few things that can help: 1. Pull the screen out. 2. Reduce the bitrate to 60Mbps -

Update after uninstalling QT: Resolve is not recognizing any video and became useless. Is there a way to configure it to not depend on QT? Premiere is working as before, other than losing its ability to export most codecs with mov wrapper. Fortunately Cineform, my preferred low compression codec, is working with mov. I am lucky since I don't have a prores workflow, but this will be a big problem for many people. I just hope camera/recorder/NLE manufacturers learn their lesson and provide an alternative to prores (that nonetheless had to pay in order to use, but only with Mac support) & QT, preferably an industry open standard such as Cineform and not a proprietary codec with no support. As @Hans Punk posted, adobe is working towards that direction.

Thanks. I was thinking of getting a ninja 2 to record a downsampled 4K but at least I would gain the 4:2:2 and files that don't need transcoding for good performance. With your input, the unsupported quicktime and the new proxy function of premiere, I will keep using the internal files.

Zacuto shrink the EVF - Gratical Eye available soon for $1950
Don Kotlos replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I am just guessing. -
Can I? I thought it is using it as a default playback engine. I could be wrong but with Resolve if I don't have quicktime installed I cannot see any file.
-
Yeah at least at I have a choice there so I will not be using any quicktime dependent codecs.

QT was not supported since windows 8. Directly from Apple: "Please note: QuickTime 7 is for use with Windows Vista or Windows 7. If installed on other versions of Windows, it may not offer full functionality and is unsupported." I personally don't care about this crappy program anyways but what I am not sure is why davinci resolve hasn't taken any action all these years. How can you pay $1000 for a program that requires another unsupported one? From now on it will affect their sales a lot, so they will have to do something. Premiere is catching up both with color manipulating abilities & proxy workflow, and After effects as more specific keying and tracking program. While it is still easier to do these things with Resolve (& even if it is free) I am not going to keep having QT for it. So for now, it is premiere only...

Thanks that means a 4k s35 sensor will give a very nice image. Did you make the groundglass yourself? How does the grain of the glass afect the image quality? I know from the dslr that finer grain gives you higher transmittance but smoother dof transitions (larger DoF) whereas larger grain looses more light but the transition into focus is much more abrupt. Sorry I cannot explain it better.

Zacuto shrink the EVF - Gratical Eye available soon for $1950
Don Kotlos replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It is probably an RGBW design, where W represents white pixels. This is similar to what Sony (and few other companies) use for their LCDs. So 130720 full color pixels * 4 = 5242880 dots which is closer to 5.4MDots. -
What is the approximate resolution with the groundglass?
-
Isn't it a bit shady the fact that they give you more details about the money they want than the specs of the camera?

That is a type A USB 2.0 female connector in order to plug in usb thumb drives. You can download files into the drive that can: a) update the firmware b) Update the LUTs that you can use -
If any of you are into lenses then the following article is definitely worth reading: Zeiss T* coatings explanation By the way, I found it on imaging resource.

Yeah me neither. SD1->HDMI converter plus a power unit make this larger (and much more expensive) than the smallHD 501. -
I'll be at NAB, what would you like me to check out?
Don Kotlos replied to Jonesy Jones's topic in Cameras
Since BM is on your list, can you please ask them: 1. Are they still working on the global shutter for the micro/ursa mini? 2. Is there a chance they will release a compact HDMI EVF for the micro? (If they say no, tell them they should cause there are plenty of cameras that need one other than the micro ) Thanks a lot Jonesy! -
Should I wait for a blackmagic price Cut this summer?
Don Kotlos replied to muhammadahmad's topic in Cameras
But i thought "black magic" & "wait" were almost equivalent for new products. You should have your Alexa by now -
If anyone is going to NAB they should stop by the BM booth and put it in their head.
