I could argue the same thing for 24p that was chosen for practical reasons and not based on its aesthetic qualities. But don't mistake my point as advocating smooth motion...

Sorry for the confusion but the 1-5 points were only referring to heat and the information came from observations of people that have tested it. I can't be sure whether all these are actually true, like the bitrate effect. Well you might be right since I can't think of a reason why they would not place the hot chips closer to the external heat sink. Oh after sticking with my low res E-M1 until now, most certainly I will enjoy it no matter how hot it gets.

The A7s can downsample when recording internally in 1080p but from reading that article it seams that you can get even better quality if you downsample the 4K output. I haven't tried it myself so if anybody else wants to weigh in...

My understanding is that the external recorder cannot do a 4K-->1080p downsample. So the scaler-box offers a very nice 1080p signal that can be recorded with the ninja. Of course you could do the same (or even better) in your computer later, but that transcoding requires more time. Also you miss the 4:2:2 if it makes a difference.

iFixit did a teardown: https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Sony+a7R+II+Teardown/45597 Some observations: There is indeed a heat sink just behind the back of the camera. So indeed opening the LCD should help. Although the image processing chip lies on the internal side of the motherboad with its heatsink directed towards the sensor it might still be able to remove some heat. The sensor on the other hand as expected does not have any heat sinks. It seams that the base of the camera is directly attached to the main frame so that might be an alternative place to cool down with some fancy attachment. Battery compartment looks far away from any heat sinks so I guess it is out of the way. General observations from across the internet: 1. For 4K FF is better than S35. More data to process? 2. For HD there is no problem. 3. External recording helps only when triggered from the recorder and not by the camera. Image processor does not do stuff?? 4. Battery/External power does not seem to affect anything 5. Lower bitrate helps? That would indicate that processing larger amounts of data is more intensive for the image processor than the the extra compression needs. The conclusion would be that the sensor and the image processor both are producing the heat that forces the camera to shut down. I am sure they had the reasons for not placing the image processor on the other side of the motherboard but I hope they do something different for the A7sii. It would be great if somebody can verify that triggering the recording from an external recorder is not causing any heat problems even in 4K s35 XAVC-S mode. I ll test mine next week in my very warm weather.

Well, just a heads up: The P50 has a starting price of $1599 and will get much more expensive when you select the highest CPU/RAM/Storage configuration. But at least that will be a professional grade computer and not an art piece that acts like a mirror, throttles every time you try to render a 2min video, cannot upgrade the storage past 1TB or limited to 16gb of ram.

I tried the resolve 12 in Windows 10 and had no problems yet. I can't say the same for premiere CC 2015 that has already crashed like 4 times. PS I am glad that A7rii does UHD vs 4K so I can use the free version of resolve!

Thanks Ed. I am very curious to play with the Knee parameter for better highlight roll off. Is the knee being used in your setup? Cause here is what the manual says and I am not sure what "Mode" refers to: KneeSets knee point and slope for video signal compression to prevent over-exposure by limiting signals in high intensity areas of the subject to the dynamic range of your camera. When selecting [Still], [Cine1], [Cine2], [Cine3], [Cine4], [ITU709(800%)], [S-Log2] in [Gamma], [Knee] is set to [Off] if [Mode] is set to [Auto]. To use functions in [Knee], set [Mode] to [Manual].

The new lenovo P50/P70 do have an option for a digitizer. Also they are the only ones that have thunderbold 3. The P50 with the 6 cell battery claims 6 hours of use. As limitbreak mentioned forget any dual core for 4K editing. Also forget any computer without discrete GPU for the resolve. If you really need all these stuff then forget the all-in-one solution. Get a cheap tablet with a digitizer and a proper latop to do your heady-duty stuff like 4K editing.

If you upload 4K then it uses a higher bitrate for the 1080p versus uploading in 1080p directly. That is because when you upload in 1080p it is stored for free whereas in 4K it counts against your storage limit. I haven't really compared the 1080p from 4K of the youtube with the 1080p of the Vimeo but they should use very similar bitrate.

Yeah they are not comparing "real life" footage, but at least he shares a well known secret among other things.

If you are happy with the image of the A7R and you do a lot of hand held shots, you might be better off with a used A7II which will come for about the same price and adds IBIS,XAVC-S and s-log2. If you want to improve the image quality and stay within your budget, the GH4 might be a better option as Andrew suggested.

People prefer enlarging their differences than exploring and celebrating their common ground. Does A7rII suffer from excessive noise ? Yes. Does A7rII have a problem with long 4K recordings? Yes. Is A7rII a great camera? Definitely. It is the ultimate all-rounder camera at this moment. Would you spend $3200 on it? I am not sure yet...

If the report that recording externally from the A7rII can happen without the internal processing, then it is worth the shot to try it out. You might end up with a less processed image , finer grain and a bit more noise.

I see people at DVXshooter already tested it and it makes no difference. The LCD brightness might be a power limitation.

I get your point Bob. But tell me, were you to buy to this camera wouldn't you be worried the slightest? Its true, I don't usually do many things under 105F, but wouldn't be better to have a camera if I wanted to actually do it? I like to have equipment that gets out of the way of what I want to do, and not constantly thinking about when it will overheat. Sony is not a company like Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Olympus, BM, etc that will address any problems with a firmware update, but instead they will come with a new model next year. Its great that we have a company that pushes the boundaries of what is possible but at the same time we as consumers have to be aware of the negatives that come along. Don't get me wrong A7rII looks like a great camera, but since I shoot primarily video now I am better off waiting to see what A7sII will bring to the table for most probably the same amount of money. Keep in mind that we are talking about a $3200 camera that its resale value will drop like rock within the first 6 months no matter what.

Great news. Now I should definitely wait for this before committing to the A7rii.

Can you test it next time please Here in Texas things can get hot.. Sony made it hard for us to find something to complain about so everybody is focused on this now
