  1. I actually hope it does work better for you but I am just not seeing how it could be better than on the Sony's. I have been adapting and trying to adapt lenses across systems for decades with things like a 300 2.8 on a Pentax Q, Nikon lenses bare- no adapter on Pentax for the IBIS, AF with the AFA and I forgot about trap focus (would not fire unless in focus- even with a manual focus Nikon lens), trying to kludge auto focus old MD/MC lenses on A mount on E mount, M43 lenses on E mount ETC and that for me was a major reason I got FF E mount in the first place (being able to use many more lenses with ease and often better than the original system they came from). Not being able to adapt lenses so easily would have been a reason enough not to go to Nikon had they been first instead of Sony for me. It still just seems to me that with older Nikon lenses, they will be better on FF E mount than the Zed's (for now). Nikon will still sell you plenty of AIS lenses new and for those, again, I would take a A7iii over a Zed any day. For video auto focus users of Nikon recent Nikon AF lenses, the Z6 seems a no brainer. Hope it is all you want it to be.
  2. You get everything but some EXIF data with the Sony's. I don't get focal length on the first gen A7s but that isn't stabilized so not entered. Again, I would think with simple dumb adapters and older AF and manual focus lenses it is going to be similar with some advantages to each depending on what you want and age of the lens but the smart adapter allows auto focus with the Sony's but not the Nikons. Again, it all remains to be seen but for me, unless it was about later and current AF lenses, the Sony's seem a better fit for older Nikon lenses (you can still buy plenty of AIS lenses new from Nikon and auto focus them on a Sony- can not do that on the Zed's (yet). Got current AF Nikon lenses, the Zed's look much better. This is all great gear.
  3. Even my A7s had no issue with exposure and AIS/AF (non D) lenses using auto ISO with a simple dumb adapter EG my last two, an old MF 85 1.8 and 50 1.8 AF (non D) since given away recently with a D50 and it no trouble for focusing either and I actually much preferred using those lenses on the A7s than I would on a Nikon DSLR (I even preferred them bare on a Pentax DSLR because they could be stabilized and auto focused with a 1.7x AFA -do that at your own risk). ON a smart adapter on the latest Sony's, both those lenses can auto focus but neither (including the 50 1.8 AF) can on the Zed's and I think I saw something about only being used wide open (though that seems wrong given the aperture rings). Sony's IBIS is rated a little higher too though again, it remains to be seen in actual use.
  4. I think I am actually seeing a slight INCREASE in ILCs (both DSLR and mirrorless) here thanks to Instagram though that might just be a momentary blip and phones are really good enough now for most. Many seem to have at least one prime even if just a 50 1.8. When phones can do other stuff well (EG macro, tilt shift, low light, super tele ETC) the game will be over. As a Sony USER, it I great to see that lens manufacturer list as virtually all of them could be made to work on a Sony. That isn't so good for Sony the company except it might sell a few more cameras than it otherwise would. It WAS good for them at the start but they would now prefer people by Sony brand stuff I would think and only adapt the stuff they don't make. Nikon aint getting ANY of that at least just yet.
  5. That is absolutely crazy. That Nikons DSLR APSC kit lenses qualify with 120 points is crazy enough by itself but the new 19mm PCE tilt shift lens only scores 100 points? Given that, I am sure everything Zed will qualify!
  6. It remains to be seen but I suspect that for AFS lenses, then yes, the Zed's will be much better to use on than the Sony's but for AIS and AFD Nikon lenses, I think the Sony's with a cheap dumb adapter will be about as good and with a smart adapter like the Techart pro (disclaimer I have not used it), the latest Sony's would be a lot better. The new Nikons look to have some really nice advantages over other cameras in some ways but are behind in others so it comes down to what is important to each individual. For someone heavily invested in Nikon AFS or other recent AF lenses, then this is clearly the way to go and the same for Nikon fans who don't want to look elsewhere as well. It will get its share of newcomers starting from scratch (as will Sony still and Canon when they start) and some Canon, Sony and other users will migrate to Nikon mirrorless just as some have been migrating to Nikon DSLRs and probably vice versa Just as it always has been. A nice start but not for me (the non open mount meaning no adapting other mounts being the main killer). I have been really spoilt by the Sony A7s low light auto focus (AFS anyway).
  7. Actually while the 50 1.4 is A pro lens, so is the 55 1.8. For Sony pro support you need three lenses that have either a Zeiss, G or G master badge (among other requirements). I would think that all (or most) of the S line lenses will qualify for Nikon pro support though that remains to be seen. EDIT, I also think it is a bit snobbish using the lenses badge as being pro or not as I think many pros are using the FE 85 1.8 for instance as it is so good and many actually prefer it to the Zeiss Batis 85 1.8.
  8. Don't mistake fast for being pro. I think these may well be quite good lenses that would be very much at home for pro use just maybe not enough of them yet.
  9. That was great. I still think I would prefer to use an A7sii for that though. While my A7s is dead, I have loaned my Canon 17 TS-E to a relative who does real estate videos for a developer to use with an A7sii. Must find out how he is going with it.
  10. It is just the routine I got into with mirrorless. I have the charger plugged into a wall socket and at the end of a day, I charge the batteries I have used and replace it with the last one charged. I know I get (got) hundreds of shots and some video (often a song or two at a gig) and it would be far more than the CIPA ratings. All three of my A7s batteries are nearing the end of their lives I think though the camera being dead (at least for now) makes that point moot. I would shoot a concert or multi band gig and get several hundred more shots than CIPA figures indicate (and the three batteries would be more than I need for pretty much anything) but if I took say 30 shots today and 40 tomorrow and didn't charge, THEN likely by the following day I would have little left while DSLRs usually can go days without charging. It does seem the figures are a bit more than first stated for the Zed's I think but I would still think this same situation would apply and I would treat it the same as I would my A7s rather than a DSLR.
  11. I think it is very similar to the first and second gen Sony's. They get a LOT more shots/video if used at once than the CIPA ratings indicate. If you stop and start and shoot sporadically and don't recharge as many would do with a DSLR, then I would think the battery life WOULD be low. I know that until it died, I was getting far more shots per charge with my A7s and that was using four year old batteries used daily. I would use them and then charge when finished regardless of what was left and have a couple of spares handy if not always needed. In order just to have something to shoot with, I now have my Dads 4/3 DSLR and the battery is used differently and not charged daily (no video though and I don't use it anywhere near as much).
  12. Manual focus. It will want to be spectacular for its price (assuming it will be very dear indeed). I do think it could end up a cult classic like the original 58 1.2 Noct. Sony users can at least use manual focus 50 f0.95 if they want at a lot lower price even if not as good. I wish Nikon would allow others access to the mount.
  13. No the adapter is the Techart pro made for Leica lenses (AF M mount manual focus lenses but can use other lenses with simple adapter rings) There will possibly something similar for the Zed's but because Nikon does not release mount information, it will have to be reverse engineered (Sony plays much nicer with others over their mount). Actually, Sigma made an adapter decades ago that would allow Nikon manual focus lenses to auto focus on Minolta (now Sony) A mount cameras though that one had glass elements and had a crop factor (they also made one for MD/MC lenses to use on A mount- I have one of the later and was trying to kludge it together via stacked adapters on my A7/A7s but no luck). Nikon made similar adapters to use MF lenses on their SLRs/DSLRs as did Pentax and Yashica but including the Sigma pair for Minolta are all screwdrive . The Pentax 1.7x AF adapter worked great on DSLRs. Sony E mount can use AF adapters for lenses from - A mount of course (and they have ones for both screwdrive and in lens AF motors). Canon (zillions of different ones) but the main ones seem to be the Metabones and the Sigma Mc11 ( I have four different ones). Nikon (only one or two and more limited but they work ok for many including people using the 105 1.4 on the latest Sony's for things like weddings). There are even AF adapters for lenses like the Contax G lenses on E mount. I love tinkering with adapters and in some cases adapters make 20-40 year old lenses MUCH better than they were originally. I loved using my old 300 2.8 manual focus Tamron adaptall as an auto focus lens on Pentax (stabilized too) and Canon FD lenses are light years better on FF E mount than on FD film cameras. The current Canon 17 TS-E is a lens MUCH easier to use on mirrorless than on a DSLR. A lot of the adapter thing is just fun but there are some lenses brought back to life due to adapters. I asked about do the Z cameras have a full variable zoom like clear zoom because it turns fast primes and other special lenses (like the TS-Es) into virtually lossless zooms for video (and Jpegs) and so I can pick and choose my lenses across systems. With more native lenses there are fewer lenses that need to be adapted though.
  14. Seems definitely to have been designed to be A7ii and A7Rii killers. Very competitive with the iii models and better in many ways and no in others. Only one card slot. This was often listed as a strike against Sony's but I wouldn't be surprised if many who did suddenly don't find it an issue now. (single slot is not an issue for me). 1.8/f4 lenses price. I see some of the same whinging as happened with Sony's but again, these will not be like the old DSLR/legacy 50mm lenses from many years ago (Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 was even more expensive but worth it - LoCA and all) so I imagine the lenses will be great and the issue will be the limited number. I would think this first kit zoom will leave the Sony Zeiss one for dead though that is no longer a lens "needed" though I am a bit worried that the f4 zoom is collapsible? (might have some IQ issues?). Adapter looks good- shame about no AF for older AF-D lenses and pity that Nikon doesn't play nice with others making adapters (so not being able to use my Canon 17 TS-E is a bummer to me). DSLR fanatics often put down using adapters, guess many will change their opinions just because it is Nikon doing it (meanwhile Sony users can even auto focus some of those older manual focus NIKON lenses at least for stills). Only ONE of my last seven Nikon lenses would auto focus on these cameras and another four would not but I could probably get almost all them to AF on the latest Sony's (not that I would have wanted to except for maybe my 50 1.8 AF) and only a lowly Nikon AF kit lens for APSC would AF on the Zeds. As for ergonomics, that is subjective and I think (wont know for sure yet) I would still prefer the first gen Sony cameras over others (and second gen Sony cameras over these). My Sony A7s is dead so I am looking to get it fixed or if a miracle happens (and I sell my Sony lenses) get something new. The adapter situation with my Canon lenses alone means the ZEDS (I am Australian Nikon) are likely not for me and I don't really want to sell some of my Sony lenses, not the 55 1.8 anyway. Interesting the video specs look really good at first but it does seem there are a few Sony style asterisks starting to emerge. All in all a very nice start for the camera and a pass for lenses IF you like adapters and have reasonably recent lenses and nice but limited lens line up and map. Do these have digital zoom like clear zoom?

Thanks, This camera (E30) has no video and it is almost the opposite of what I use -I prefer primes and shoot in low light a lot and these are pro grade weather sealed zooms and the E30 has to have just about the worst viewfinder to date (it is almost always unusable indoors at night and often during the day) but there is still (ten years on) something very nice about the camera and the lenses are enough for me to want to buy another m43 camera just to use them so maybe a cheap E-M1 is in my future. The specs of the camera in themselves - dual cards (different types) tilty/flippy screen (very small though) are still right up there. If only it could use my 17mm TS-E AT 17mm and shoot at least a bit better in low light I might even leave it at this for stills along with an E-M1.
  16. The thing is that is two separate things. A) Go on about specs- yep, but maybe that is because most of them are FORMER users of other systems (or still current multiple system users). B) Bash- no, don't think so. There are of course some in every room but I see far more people who use other brands and many who have never even tried Sony bashing Sony and often for other reasons (EG something completely unrelated to photography/videography). I also sometimes suspect it is a lot smaller group (for all brand trolls) and they just have many accounts (some on DPR have had literally hundreds) and that in some cases the worst offenders may actually be working/paid shills for their oppositions though that might be a bit too conspiracy theory.

Since my A7s is dead and it may be a while before I can get it fixed, I have just been given my Dad's old Olympus 4/3 E30 and some really nice lenses. 12-60 2.8-4 and 50-200 2.8-3.5 as well as a OM 180 2.8 and a 50 3.5 macro. I will use them for photos on the E-30 (hopefully I can get used to a DSLR again) but was wondering what would be the best camera to adapt these two lovely zooms on? What adapter gives the best performance (if there is more than one)? Any cheaper m43 cameras that will play nice with them?
  18. Even though my A7s has died, and is likely a very expensive fix, I still rate it by far my all time favourite camera and I really do love it and much more so than any Canon or Nikon camera I have had so far. I also am perfectly happy with its ergonomics and colour (and I have pretty big hands). Being able to shoot and see with the EVF in really low (almost no) light and shoot walk around with adapted or native lenses and use something like a Canon 17mm tilt shift lens at night hand held is something I can not do yet with anything else. In the meanwhile I will probably have to get a cheap old Canon APSC DSLR just to be able to take photos and/or video (I still have some decent EF mount AF lenses). I will miss using the 17 TS-E FF though and using both the FE 85 1.8 and Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 as no old lenses have come close to those for me.

I rate the FD L lenses as best but the non L ones are about the same as Nikon, Pentax, Olympus and Minolta though all makers have some gems and some lesser lenses. That said, if it is for using on EF mount at any point, then it has to be pretty much Nikon (or older EF- some EF lenses are now around thirty years old). With old lenses, I think the condition of the individual lens is much more important than that make and models overall reputation.
  20. To be fair, Ken put the manual focus version in his worst ten list though the AF has the same optics (he put the AF a bit better for reasons other than optics). I had one of those (AF) and used it on a 6mp DSLR and it was ok but nothing special.
  21. I understand the new mount is only around 2mm bigger than Sony's. The Fuji mount is a lot bigger than the new Nikons I think so I doubt very much that will ever happen. I would love to see it if it did though.
  22. Many Nikon users want a high performance adapter and not for the old MF lenses but for the current range of Nikon lenses (and there are several different types there as well). Adapters for old MF lenses will be fun to use for many people but they can just be dumb types possibly for a lot less cost. They MIGHT need a few different adapters just for more recent lenses. Being able to use whatever lens YOU want is something I like a lot and I am sure I am not on my own there. Then there are third party adapters like the Sigma one that allows auto focus with manual focus lenses. This camera SHOULD be very good and the lenses SHOULD be as well but there will not be many to start and adapters will form a necessary requirement for many and a lot of fun adapting other lenses for others. I still think I will prefer the ergonomics of the first E mount FF cameras and certainly will regards the lens release button but that doesn't mean I would not want the camera.
  23. Note sure if these are all screwdrive lenses but I think they are. 10.5 2.8 DX fisheye, 14 2.8D ED, 16 2.8D fisheye, 20 2.8D, 24-85 2.8-4D, 24 2.8D, 28 2.8D, 35 f2D, 50 1.8D, 60 2.8D, 80-400 4.5-5.6D ED, 105 f2 D VC, 135 f2D VC, 180 2.8D ED, 200 f4 micro D ED are all listed on Nikon USA website as being available. Some of those and some of the MF may not be made anymore but might just be residual stock (don't know) but they still sell them new. As for those AIS lenses, well some are just garden variety lenses that are not much different to Canon FD or Pentax K or Minolta MD ETC, some nice and some not so. For example Nikon will happily sell you a 35 1.4 MF lens for $1164.95 (it is not worth it now - at least mine wasn't that I paid a lot less for many years ago) or a 50 1.4 MF lens for $469.95 and I can think of many manual focus normal lenses I would take before that one. https://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/camera-lenses/all-lenses/index.page#!
  24. You know Nikon still sells screwdrive lenses new? (and AIS lenses new as well). 14 2.8 D ED for example. Part of Nikons problem is that they have so many different compatibility issues even with DSLRs and some of the latest Nikon lenses wont work on some CURRENT Nikon cameras . That is why I think they need more than one adapter or at least one high end one.
  25. On the note about lens releases. Just look at the ones Sony did release in 2017, six of them and all first class. 24-105 f4 G, 12-24 f4 G, 16-35 2.8 GM, 100-400 FE, 100 2.8 STF GM and the 85 1.8 FE Imagine if they had that quality of lens for every one at the start. I expect Nikon to be close to that sort of level at the start though not sure they will do something like the cheap but great FE 85 1.8 for a while.
