Cheap chineese flycams and similar stuff are nowhere near glidecam quality (and usability) unfortunatelly. I tried some small flycam and it was impossible to balance it properly, there was many small issues with handle, gimbal, loose screws etc. With such a simple construction those little things and quality overall are super important, i think there is no point in buying cheap versions because they just dont work properly. I had glidecam HD2000, HD4000 and now i have DGS, they all were great, they were precise and consistent in balancing, i could calibrate gimbal when needed etc.

This is great comparison. I am using glidecam almost every day (couple years now) - the best tool in my toolbag I can imitate tripod, dolly, slider, jib, if i had to take just one thing with me beside the camera i would take the glidecam. No firmwares, no batteries, easy to handle, can take it as carry on baggage, can take it to the mountains for a hike, can use it in the rain (DGS version with improved gimbal), most people doesnt pay attention to it, it is quite stealthy, can go through the crowd with it. It requires a lot of training but it pays of.

Yesterday i took my 5d3 to the airfield to test the recently added new S16 crop feature. Correct framing and fluid live view (two the most important improvements) are just essential to shoot fast moving objects. What a great new tool!!! Almost everything was shot with 70-200 f2.8 IS II with 3x 1:1 crop at 1080p 25fps. Lens set at f8. No single damaged frame (recorded on sandisk 128gb 160mb/s card), just perfect. I have to get canon 2x extender now to have 1200mm lens

5D3 in raw mode 24/25fps 1080p 16:9 records 83-84 MB/s. Which gives 5GB per minute. 64GB is 12 minutes, 128GB is 24 minutes, 256GB is 48 minutes. Simple as that. Maybe you card was faulty. About alexa - i have been on set of cat food TV commercial, shot on alexa xt - everything in arriraw. Nobody even mentioned prores. I was making BTS video - everything in raw either 2 day on set with 5d3 - no problem at all (but for that i bought those sandisk cards and didnt even try to use KB 64GB 1000x shitty card. Yesterday ML developers unlocked fully functional 1920x1080 3x crop - now it has fully working real time framing, up to this point it had black/white choppy look on the screen, now it can be treated like normal, usable s16 crop. They have also unlocked 50/60 fps mode without the need of streaching, maxumum resolution is 1920x648 (so very wide) but no image artifacts, IQ the same as 1920x1080 with black bars.

Didnt happen for me with sandisks and 24/25 fps, it did with KB 64 1000x with any framerate from time to time exactly as you said. Sandisks start to randomly damage single frames (not drop) when you set fps override above 35fps in 1080p and 65 fps in 720p mode - in almost every clip with those framerates you can find some bad frames. During over a year with sandisks extreme pro 128gb 160mb/s no single frame damaged with 24/25 fps though.
-
First of all, KB 64 1000x is too slow and too unreliable card for ml raw. I have one and had many stopped recordings either. Now i use sandisks 128gb 160mb/s and have no problem at all. No recording stops with 24/25 fps ever. I used the camera during the summer in italy with air temperature about 40 degrees centigrade with no overheating issues, internal temperature was about 60 (on ML termometer) and no recording stops. I shot many short, 1-3 minutes clips though so in fact the camera had some time to cool down. The card was very hot indeed but everything worked as intended.

Which would you rather have? 1DC/5Dmkiii/A7sii/Other

Of course, you can open MLVs directly in resolve or premiere using MLVFS. Works for PC and Mac. No transcoding. You Can also use a nice app called slimRAW to compress raw files (lossless or lossy, 3:1, 4:1) I use it to copy files from card to hdd, instead of say 128gb (full card) of data i get about 60gb with lossless compresion, it doesnt take much more time than simple copying. -
Today i made some tests with dual ISO mode which lets to record with two ISOs, there is possible to gain additional 3-4 stops of dynamic range for the price of aliasing in highlights and shadows (where resolution drops by half) but midtones retains full resolution. So, about the test - I exposted ETTR on the sky to avoid clipping, processed the files with cr2hdr and than did some grading in resolve 12. I lowered the highlights -100, shadows +100 and than raised the overall exposure + 3EV. I had to make some tweaking in nodes to avoid clipping in the bright sky after that. There was some noise in the shadows but i get rid of it with the neat video resolve plugin. I get a quite flat image so added some contrast and little bit of arri lut to the taste. And a film grain on top of that. The sky was quite bright despite the clouds, with ETTR the car interior was very underexposed, without dual iso recovering of such amount of shadow information would be impossible. I didnt use dualiso feature so often before but now i am more and more confident using it in some situations. In this test i used 100/800 isos, there is aliasing and moire especially visible in power lines and car interior elements but it is not very distracting and i am very satisfied with quality and especially dynamic range.

Thanks, i love 5d3 with ML and i am shocked how easy it is to shoot now - i edited this clip entirely straight from two 128GB CF sandisk cards with two usb 3.0 card readers, used MLVFS so I even didnt have to copy anything to HDD. Just inserted full cards, "mounted" via old version of PC MLVFS and almost instantly opened in resolve 12. Fast CC, exported as 10bit DNxHD444 1080p, cut in premiere and exported as 4k h264 - 4k, exactly as you said - just for youtube better 1080p quality. Auto ETTR feature is very helpful. I always try to capture everything in highlights and than raise the shadows to the overall good brightness level. And than sometimes add some contrast to give more punchy look. Sometimes it is also needed to use neat video in resolve to clean it up a little bit but denoising is really great with raw footage, it retains great amount of details as there are no compression artifacts.

HI, just shot this, 5d3 ML raw 1080p 25fps, FF and 3x crop mode, all handheld with 70-200 f2.8 IS II (sometimes i used fence as a support). Very little CC in resolve, all clips set for BMC profile and added one simple BMC lut. I am soooo pleased with the color out of this camera, just love it. And i am shocked how easy it is to shoot now - this clip i edited entirely straight from two 128GB CF sandisk cards with two usb 3.0 card readers, used MLVFS so didnt have to copy anything to HDD. Do you guys think that upgrade to 1dx mark ii would be really an upgrade to 5d3 with ml? Right now autofocus is the only reason for me to think about 1dxII, I am worrying about loosing 1080p 14bit raw for 1,4x crop 4k (beautiful in fact) but without raw flexibility.

Hi, 5d3 magic lantern raw, 1080p 25fps, shot handheld with 70-200 f2.8 IS II. Just simple color correction in resolve 12.

Does anybody have canon 1dc 4k footage shot with canon 11-24f4 lens? I am interested how the 11 and 24mm would look like with 4k crop. (it shoud give 14-31 equivalent). On 1DXII it would be like 15-33 so quite an interesting set.
-
Thats right but in fact the highest resolution possible in normal (not cropped) mode is 1920x1290 (3:2 aspect).
-
Ebrahim, do you have any knowledge about FF 1080p 24/25/30 quality? Is it similar in quality to 5ds or rather more to 5d3? Did they improve 1080p?

If CF cards works nice with video mode and gves some ability for 4k/60fps bursts like 15-20 seconds there are some cheaper solutions until CFast cards became cheaper (at least for some lower budget shots). For ML raw recording with 5d3 i use nextodi portable data bank which copy CF 128GB card in around 24 minutes. I have 2TB HDD installed inside (i can swap them in 30 seconds) and i was able to easily collect 2TB data in couple of days during vacations. With 2 128GB cards i could work almost continously as 128GB lasts for about 25 minutes of 1080p 25fps raw (5GB/min, about 670mbps - 1dxII has 500mbps in24/25fps so it should last a little bit longer, like 33 minutes). Very easy way without laptop. Internal battery lasts for about 500GB so i used USB power bank to keep it running all day. Similar CFast solutions would be very, very expensive, the one i use cost around 300 pounds with 1TB HDD inside . Thats why i am extremely glad that CF cards works fine.

This is GREAT news, i was hoping for this really. I wonder how sandisks extreme pro 160mb/s would perform as i have couple of these for 5d3 ML raw and they are 100 percent reliable.
-
Right, ML screen sharpening does wonders, much better than their own peaking and the one i have seen in a7sII (a7sII in real life has lower screen quality than 5d3, checked them side by side. Additionally peaking dots was making a lot of mess).
-
4k 24/25fps probably can be recorded on fast CF card, they say 4k/50/60 requires Cfast. 100fps can be recorded with CF card.
-
At last, 1080p 120fps full frame :)) no crop, no buffer, great! I wonder about quality of that vs normal speed 1080p. And it is possible to record also on fast CF card. Good job canon.
-
So, is that mean 120fps full frame 1080p? That would be really great. No crop like a7sII od c300 II in 120fps? I wonder if they improved 1080p codec quality. Something like in 5ds would be nice.
-
Guys, is 100/120fps cropped? I cannot find such an information.
-
I wonder if it can record 24/25ps 4K to fast CF card like 1dc or it would require CFast inserted for that.
