  1. I bought the S1RII for 3250€, I think it's a good price for this camera, not sure I would have bought it at 3600€. By the way, I spoke with someone who said he was able to remove most of the noise reduction inside of the V-log footage of the S1RII, if it's true the camera will be much more interesting. The A7RV is a great camera for still, but for video I would prefer to use Panasonic, just for IBIS and Open Gate. Yes both the 28-45mm and 45-90mm would make a killer combo. And why not the rumored 200mm f1.8 to get the perfect trio ...
  2. Got my S1RII and like I thought, I'm a bit disappointed. Stills are great with very good resolution, the Dpreview studio test is odd because the camera is very sharp even when using not so sharp lenses like the 28-200mm. But there are better cameras for photography, AF implementation is weird, AF-S is only DFD and the buffer is a joke when shooting high fps pictures. Video quality is the same than S5II, a bit less sharpening but still the same video engine, it still looks worse than the old gen, the resolution just feels not as good, no matter the mode or resolution used the image doesn't look really sharp in a good way, lines are not straight, some details are missing like if a filter or blur in some part of the image was added. The image looks like there is a slight oil painting touch softening the image at the core. Like on the S5II the rec 709 profiles are worse than V-log. So it is a bit ironic from Lumix to say "discover unseen details" for their S1RII tagline. Because of this the moire is not too much prononced. Some will like this tradeoff. I tested Prores Raw 6K Pixel to Pixel and the image is much better, the weird processing is gone. But I can't get the image right when using Premiere Pro, colors are off, I don't think Prores Raw is really fully supported by Premiere. The crop and the data size also makes this mode hard to use and it is not supported at all by Resolve. Using the Canon R5 or Z6III for raw is much easier as the files are better supported and there is no crop. The rolling shutter is just bad when using the DR boost, I didn't think I could see it but I can see jello even with relatively slow movements. In addition 24fps is the max fps we can use with DR boost and Open Gate. I can't select 30fps, maybe a bug. I think the best modes are 6k or 4k 60fps, there is only a slight crop, worse DR because no DR boost and the image quality becomes even slighltly worse but there is not a big difference with the 30fps and the rolling shutter is better. I quickly tested the 4k 120fps and as if it isn't enough that the 4k30fps was not great, the 120fps is even worse : blurry, bad details, just unusable. When selecting Pixel to Pixel, the quality is better but again these crop make these Pixel to Pixel modes hard to use and feel like we are using a S35 camera. Stabilization is the best in the market and for me it's the main reason I still use Panasonic (with Open Gate too). But the S5II is as good ... The S1RII feels like it was created for people taking mostly photography of still subjects. And for this the camera is good, not the best DR performance but nice colors and impressive 177MP handheld mode (the image makes a very long time to create though, much longer than on the S5II). For video it comes with marketing bait as 8k and 4k 120fps. The 8k like every other modes except raw is too much processed, it has high rolling shutter when the DR boost is enabled and the 4k120fps is not good at all. Yes we can do a lot of things with this camera but with big penalties most of the time. The added Prores Raw is questionable too, the files are not supported in Resolve and the crop is really disappointing. The fact remains, however, than the S1RII is the only affordable high resolution camera with acceptable autofocus for L mount. However, I don't see anything which could attract new users to Lumix or L mount, the S5II is a much better value for Youtube and other social media creators. And the A7RIV is much cheaper and has better AF for stills. 3600€ is a lot of money but I would have happily spend a bit more to get better video engine, better rolling shutter and 8k raw. As things stand at the moment with the current firmware, I think the right price should be more about 3200€. About the reviews available online like the one from Northrup, I think the best is to always wait for some Chinese or Korean reviews, they provides much more informations and are much more unbiased than any Northrup or Undone reviews. Here is an exemple of a good and accurate review :
  3. Even High-Res mode looks weird : https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/image-comparison/fullscreen?attr18=daylight&attr13_0=panasonic_dcs1r&attr13_1=panasonic_dcs1rii&attr13_2=panasonic_dcs5&attr13_3=panasonic_dcs1&attr15_0=raw&attr15_1=jpeg&attr15_2=raw&attr15_3=raw&attr16_0=100&attr16_1=80&attr16_2=100&attr16_3=100&attr126_0=2&attr126_1=2&attr126_2=2&attr126_3=2&normalization=full&widget=1&x=0.3414324606472479&y=0.0861985472154965
  4. 3600€ with average DR for a non stacked sensor, cropped Prores-raw and 2s only H-Speed burst, it's disappointing to say the least. Mine has been shipped today and yet I have not pre-ordered the camera in the first days. I hope at least the video engine has improved since the S5II.
  5. I just tried Capture One with the files from DPreview above ISO 3200 and it shows the same smoothed out details than with LR, maybe even worse. "It trounces the A7RV at high ISO which can't even match the A7RIII. It's cleaner than the Z8 at high ISO and the A1 too". It seems the cheating of Panasonic works great and there is little doubt the camera is doing the same in video.
  6. Yes I hope it is just a bug with ACR. Here is the link :
  7. Yet, it's clearly an issue for me and for a lot of people. The difference in resolution is maybe due to the lens. But I think they used the 85mm Sigma f1.4 DG DN, which is not a bad lens at all. There is still a possibility than the S1RII uses some processing at low ISO to reduce noise even more, it could explain why the resolution is worse. On the Slashcam video, the Z8 seems much sharper in 8k than the S1RII.
  8. I'm ok with 24MP as long as the video is not over processed like on the S5II. The thing is I have not the money to buy both cameras. Beside, I have zero brand loyalty and cameras like the R5, R5II or Z8 have high resolution and still good rolling shutter and very good detail in video since they have internal raw with no crop. I just want to make the good choice, I wanted to cancel my pre-order but Panasonic seems to have delayed the S1RII shipments, so for now I kept the preorder in hope to get the spec of the new camera before the S1RII shipments.
  9. According to Manny Ortiz, LR doesn't support entirerly the S1RII,the files have much more noise at low ISO than with C1. Maybe the NR issue at high ISO on Dpreview is also related to LR ? About video, I saw a post on Reddit where 55M said the S1RII has better detail rendering than the S5II (closer to the first gen) but with some chroma NR left. Maybe I should just cancel my pre-order and wait for the new camera in April.
  10. I don't know, the S1RII has Open Gate, much better IBIS and Prores Raw. I would not sait the A1 is a better option but it's a strong one if the advantages of the Lumix mentionned above are not essential.
  11. Indeed, it's also why I kept my pre-order, the files from the S1RII look much better in 4K than on the S5II. I agree about the Z6III, and the IBIS looks really better on the S1RII too. Anyway it seems some people totally missed my point, of course most clients don't see the difference but if you want the best quality, by example to extract stills or viewing your footage on a big screen, even for family stuff, the S5 and S1 internal recording is just much better than on the S5II. I loved Panasonic before the S5II because their camera had a video IQ very close to stills. But if the aim is to shoot only for clients (and most of them can't see a difference between 2k and 4k resolution), yes the S5II is clearly the better choice, especially because of the much better AF and IBIS in video.
  12. I disagree, I really think the video engine is worse, of course much more when using the standard profiles. In 4K the level of details is low but yet these details are over-sharpened. In 5,9K/6K, there are more details but the bad sharpening is annoying. Of course most clients don't see the difference but they can't really see the difference between 4k or 1080P either ... So if use high resolution video modes I want the best quality for cropping, for extract stills etc. If not, even an old GH2 is largely enough to create beautiful images. From my point of view, lowering image quality is never a great thing, I just hope the S1RII will be closer to the S1 and S5 than the S5II.
  13. No, I'm not sure, this is the first thing I will test when I receive the camera. Since I like to crop and extract picture from my videos I can see a big difference between the image processing of the S5II and the S5, I agree V-log is a bit better than the standard profiles, even more in 4k. The S1RII at least seems to keep good quality when using the High stabilisation mode in 4k thanks to the 8k sensor. About the green tint, the last firmware fixed it for me or I was lucky ... Yes I hope they will add 8k raw internal though.
  14. Chinese review : Like in the Manny Ortiz's review, the S1RII seems really noisier than the last Sony cameras for stills. It's interesting because most ambassadors said the noise is very low in video. I think the S1RII will suffer from the same temporal noise reduction and detail filtering than the S5II in video, it's certainly why the fine details look worse than on the Z8 or R5II. The only way to get the best details will be to use the 5,8K Prores raw, but even then the image will be cropped, so less details. Really disappointing to only have the Pixel to Pixel mode for internal Prores raw. I'm very close to cancel my preorder, I keep it only because of the 44MP and my collection of L mount lenses.
  15. I agree, the S5 and even more the S1 (with better IBIS, 6K and Open Gate) are fantastic value, I still have these camera along with the even older A7III. For my use, I much prefer the S1 or S5 over the A7III, the video quality is much better, there is no annoying NR or detail smoothing at high ISO, the details are well maintened whereas the A7III looks quickly mushy, a bit like the S5II with rec 709 profiles. The IBIS is also much better on the S1 and S5. Only the AF is not as good as the A7III, but with the last firmwares and the last Sigma lenses like the 28-45mm, it is much faster than before. I don't have any issue if I don't shoot fast moving subjects. Some old lenses like 35mm Sigma F2 are almost unusable on these cameras though ... Yes ! The GH5 is also a great value, even if I have most recent m43 cameras like the GH6 or G9II, the GH5 is still unbeatable for 4k/Open Gate quality and the Open Gate can be used at 60 fps ! The GH6 is special, lot of issues even with the AF, but the colors are the best I've seen on any Panasonic camera.
  16. I stopped to sell anything to MBP and I only sell cameras in person, never on Ebay, especially at this price. I just use ad sites to meet buyers. The S5II is quite popular.
  17. In France, there was some offers last week for the S1RII, like 350€ in gift card, you can also easily sell the S5II for 1300€. It makes the upgrade for about 1900€, it still a lot of money but it is not so bad for 8K, 4K60fps, 4k 120fps with a small crop, internal raw, slightly better IBIS, in my opinion better colors and of course better photo resolution, I think it makes sense mainly for hybrid shooters heavily invested in L-mount. And it is not like there was something better for this mount. Like I said I pre-ordered mine, but if the camera is disappointing, I will go with Nikon and the Z8, like Andrew did.
  18. Yes the 28-45mm is excellent, the rendering is nice and punchy, the contrast and colors are great, and it replaces (for me) easily a 24mm, 35mm and 50mm. This is also because of lenses like this I want to give a last chance to Panasonic with the S1RII. But I'm pessimistic. The more I see footage from the S1RII, the more I think it is more close than the S5II than the S1, S1H and S5.
  19. Like I thought, the S1RII has not better moiré performance than the S1H : Also, I'm almost sure the S1RII still has these weird smoothed out details in video but wait and see ...
  20. Slashcam said the S5II had a flawless and quite "cinematic" video rendering in their review. This is not true at all, the bad processing just destroy the fine details, even more in 4k. So I would take their words with a grain of salt for now. And I found very strange all these reviews showing there is still a good amount of moiré whereas in the video of hopkinsfilms the S1RII looks even better than the S1H. Also it's hard to say because of Youtube compression but I found a video from Vistek showing a comparison between the R5II and S1RII in 8K, and like on the S5II I wonder if these are not the same smoothed out details on skin texture that I can see on the S1RII. His forehead looks more blurred on the S1RII (right image). Never mind, I already pre-ordered the camera, I will compare the video engine to my S1 and S5II, but if it is close to the S5II, I will return the camera this time.
  21. Yes, the S1 is the camera I use the most, excellent video quality, no oversharpening or smoothed out details like on the S5II. I have owned all the GH cameras, and for me the best one was the GH5 (and also the GH4). I still use the GH5 a lot. The very organic look of the Open Gate in the GH5 and the possibility to use it at 60fps is great. I was somewhat disappointed by the GH6, G9II and GH7, there is something about detail rendering I don't like, in 4K there is sometimes a lack of detail, of course the GH5 is not perfect either and still has sharpening at 0 in V-log or -5 with 709 profiles, but at least fine details are not altered. In Open gate/5,7K while there are plenty of details on the new cameras I still see a bit of bad sharpening like I on the S5II. Internal Prores raw on the GH7 fix the issue but the files are really huge, need to be recorded in V-log and there is no support for Resolve SOOC. This is why I use the GH5 most of the time with my m43 lenses, never had any issue with AF on the 10-25mm and 25-50mm in good light, can't say the same about the GH6 with low fps recording mode. Special mention to the G9II though, it is really a joy to use with the 20mm f1.7, thanks to the PDAF and the relatively lightweight of this combo.
  22. Yes, I will test the S1RII myself before buying it this time, I saw the Slashcam.de test about the resolution in video but I'm suspicious because the same site said the S5II had a flawless and quite "cinematic" video rendering. I could said something like this for the S1 and S5, but certainly not for the S5II. Resolution is a thing, but the processing as well. However, the rolling shutter certainly not look so bad compared to the S5II(X).
  23. I stopped to sell my gear with MPB two years ago. I had a very good experience at first, they were always serious. However, my last 2 sales have been disappointing, each time they have lowered my rating. I baby my gear and even when I sold a GX9 brand new (because I bought it with 3 lenses for a very good price), they lowered the condition to "excellent". The camera was new, with box etc ... And worse, they lowered the price of their "excellent" condition while the camera was in their warehouse. I saw some people saying MPB bought them some lenses with an "average rating" and later sold them with "excellent" rating. They recognized their lenses on the pics. I don't know if it's true but I wouldn't be surprised if it is.
  24. Some of these youtubers use multi fake accounts on forums and L-M43-Sony rumors site to upvote themselves or downvote other people, this also allows them to have an army of virtual minions to support then even when they talk nonsense, like when the Hybridshooter said the IBIS of the A7III/A7IV was as good as on the S5/S5II. 2 years ago, he mixed up his accounts on L-rumors while responding to a guy, he quickly deleted his post, but sadly for him, someone made a screenshot before he deletes his post. Most youtubers must really be taken with a big grain of salt, even Gerald Undone who was really hard on Panasonic in the past and concentrated most of his reviews to point out the negative aspects of their cameras and lenses without talking too long about their positive sides. But for people using both Panasonic and Sony cameras , its bias was clear. However I must admit I'm a bit disappointed by Panasonic products since 2022. I use their cameras since a long time, I loved the GH4 and GH5 and I liked the S1, but everything after looked much less refined. The GH4 and GH5 had groundbreaking features and like the NX1, these cameras were ahead of their time. The GH6, althouht it had great color science, was a total failure. In Europe, the price was cut down by almost an half after only some months ... At this time they also changed their video engine making fine details in 4k looking like an oversampled 1080p, the S5II's 4k almost looked like smartphone footage, especially when using the 709 profiles and when the image was slightly underexposed leading to a waxy look when shoothing people face. I had absolutely not the feeling to use a Panasonic camera, this camera was really pointed toward influencers and smartphone users. So yes they have good IBIS and they have Open Gate, but still ... To come back about the S1RII, even if Panasonic fanboys are angry and even if they do the most they can to prove that everything is great and most flaws are not so important, the truth is this S1RII is the replacement of a 6 years old camera, and after 6 years Panasonic can't even reach the spec of the R5 from 2020 ? This is not serious, the R5 has much better rolling shutter, 8k internal raw without crop, and yet it is a camera from 2020 ! What we will get with the hypothetic S1HII ? During 6 years Panasonic used and re-used the same A7III sensor from 2018, so maybe we will just get a clone of the A7SIII ? I'm barely kidding. Now you can find the R5 for less money than the S1RII (in Europe the price of the S1RII is close to 3600€), and if you want something better, of course in spending more money, you can get the great Nikon Z8, even the cheaper Z6III looks sometimes most interesting than the new Panasonic camera. And what about the lenses, why Panasonic stopped to make new S Pro lenses since 2019 ? We only have one S Pro prime. I don't see the point to invest to the L-mount for most people at this point and the S1RII will not help. Since 2019, the wait to get a flagship camera was really too long, especially to get a camera "almost" as good cameras from 2020/2021. I'm afraid it will be a total failure like the GH6 and there is a big chance the camera will be much cheaper in some months. I hope I'm wrong. On the positive side (according to some reviews), the crunchy/smartphone looks of the S5II is not present in the S1RII, as well as the waxy skin texture. Like someone said earlier, it still can be a good upgrade from the S1 for people who are already heavily invested in the L-mount system.
