I bought the ultimate package - I think they have cheaper ones - but if you have some cash I would support them - they are really good people.

not stupid at all so filmconvert takes log or rec709 (normal standard footage like from canon 5d) and converts to a film-like color palette in rec 709 space. From here I go from rec 709 to cineon color space - created by Kodak to maximize color fidelity and exposure information. From there then I modify it with an impulz lut then go to the final print - the film print - which I then modify at the end too. SO basically I color the footage in three stages - each stage effects the rest - it's pretty amazing - it's like a three tier coloring process. Each stage's color work effects the next. Sometimes I put too much blue in the shadows of the final print - but it all is exploding my brain - coloring is fascinating. I wish I knew more - and I am learning on my own and if others have ideas I'm proud of my new work on this sony f35 thing I did - really making the final print have some interesting turn to the brighter greens and feeling meetier and more organic.

I think Alexas also have a weird curve shoulder too - and it seems to make sense since they imitate the alexa lut very much

I think based on Phil's FS7 slow motion video I have an idea of what he does to grade which I always liked. I recolored my slo mo fs7 video with same style: Basically I think he applies even to sony cameras in filmconvert an arri alexa lut - probably fuji eternal and or kodak 5219 - and raises the shadows up - milky shadows. From here he just affects the offset and plays with sharpness over the final image. The alexa lut in filmconvert gives really nice greens and blues as a starting point. I did that plus went to a kodak release print by going after filmconvert to rec 709 generic impulz luts to a cineon then off to a film print. But not every video is the same technique at all and not one lut works well for each video - each is different depending on scene - color balance - etc - but I like the rich look he got out of the fs7 and it made me reevalutate the camera. I am now pro the fs7 again and think the fs1 will be a pretty amazing camera. I am still completely mesmorized by color - by how it all works - to get good skin tones but also to create looks that feel unique and interesting. It's a very patient and experimental artform. I no longer think we should all be trapped to c300 for skin tones - great skin tones and feel can come from s log 3.

thanks guys for being supportive. Cineon is a color space Kodak created for film when in the 90's people started transfering film to digital to color it - the digital intermediate. Cineon is now popular I guess because of Visioncolor that offers it - and it's basically a way to convert a film - even a h.264 copy like the one I had for this back into this super flat space. Then you can make a "film print" that it goes to - and from here you can manipulate it even more. So it's pretty amazing that one can go into old h.264 copies of films and mess around with the image. I wish I had a pro res copy somewhere but I can't find it - oh well. I have the source project somewhere.

I think the secret is sending off to cineon then to a film print stock via visioncolor impulz - and it makes it more interesting - to raise the blacks slightly on the film print. Anyway let me know what you think - it's interesting to try to bend the ftg to make it feel older.

well once you are working with over 4 tb of footage then to me all that matters is some form of thunderbolt and a raid disk array - the lenovo p50 will allow thunderbolt 3 raids which are blazing fast. but yes disk speed is important
-
that is sexy but does it do thunderbolt 3 - also lenovo p50 does look like a pile of heavy and clunky - thank you for this - need some benchmark tests No reason I need os x - I just need resolve -but I like os x more than windows 10 - feels more stable.

I do have a short narrative I'm working on now and a documentary I am doing with Phillip Kibbe. Gotta get back to that script - thanks for reminding me! Yep Cinema Verite - catching those little moments is important I feel in narrative - to be exciting and the film can just go anywhere vs so planned out and snoozy.
-
great article in the fool - still would love to see when the lenovo p50 hits and specs with it vs macbook pro 2014 and if apple releases a late 2015 macbook pro refresh. Curious Apple's move.

I got my last hackintosh working great in resolve - I am ready for it to go 90% smoothly
-
I am willing to wager the new Lenovo P50 laptops with a 4k display and color calibration monitor paired with hackintosh will make it a $1700 laptop that can rival the $4k macpro trash can It seems its predecessor is hackintosh ready - http://blazinglist.com/top-10-best-laptops-hackintosh-2015/ and this is running the new skylake xeon chips - if all goes well - this is going to be a major deal savings computer.

yes I do like color and flair a lot - especially to harken to older run down boxing films and b movies. The directors had a pretty good game plan on this one - they had their shot ideas - I think they had the flare idea. We had to not use any lights too which made us able to move super fast - but in terms of scouting - none of it - we just show up and shoot - and it was just me with probably an easy rig and what I like is I shot a lot of movement on the 100mm lens - I wasn't scared there of moving with a long lens and it pays off. the bridge stuff we shot on a tandem bike. And Heather from being with her for the day she loves her son - she really does - but there is more to inspire to for many people than to just produce offspring. Like, well I assume most of the people on here are filmmakers who want to go down in history as at least having made some sort of film or piece of art, in addition to everything else. So why not give her canvass the boxing ring? Danger be darned.

I do a bunch of narrative work as well - shot a narrative film two years - thanks for that here's some of my narrative work: the three below shot on the f35 and red one mx which are about $4k now used
-
yes right - correct - sorry about that
-
thanks yes the sony f3 has a fz-mount where you can get nikon or canon or pl mounts or etc- and the fs700 has an sony e mount we used zeiss zf lenses - a newer grade is being uploaded still has 2 weird mistakes from resolve 12 beta 4 - maybe they can let me know what they think of it. the flares were done in camera with the maxabeam flare light yup both cameras are very clean 1080p output - well the fs700 has a 4k output raw if you want but just went 1080p to a samurai
-
Here's this I shot on the sony f3 and fs700. And now more and more reason to rejoice -the fs700 and f3 price drops to now around 1k used - cheaper than the NX1 or A7S and better sensor, better motion, and it is such great news - thank you latest and greatest technology. Because I still think there is a lot of magic to be had from what you can do with the f3 and fs700 - and save yourself $3000 that you can put towards lenses or other things. The march to newer and newer technology makes the old stuff so much cheaper and with the same results.

that would be amazing just going from pro res 1080p hq file and transcoding with 3 nodes to pro res 422 - just want to see frames per second to do it between the two yes need to see though if it can be my DIT machine or if I need to be trapped to the apple cult anymore than I need too.
-
neat video has been fine in resolve 11 mac os x - what version of neat are you using?
-
yes all though they are heavy - the p50 has a cutting edge desktop CPU in it and a really nice GPU and yes thunderbolt 3 so you can put even more gfx in it if you need it as a home docking system But still, need to see reviews when it comes out - make sure the thing doesn't overheat - and that all is good in resolve I plan to buy and try it out for like 2 weeks - test side by side with my mac pro once the trashcan comes out of the shop if it ever will. If Apple was still apple they would be updating their macbook pro and macpros soon, but I think right now as we all know - they are kind of over the whole laptop and desktop game - they aren't really serious about professionals anymore. they care about the phone and tablets and watches - they are transitioning out of the professional artist market - and so be it - thought I think its good to cater to artists cause you make the computer have a cool factor and everyone likes to be cool like artists but damn windows 10 is stable - not constant updates, it works. as someone said "but what about the privacy issues" and really I'm sure apple has the same BS and everything you type and read and it's all gone our privacy so who cares. curious though if there is a way to hackintosh the p50 - i doubt it though but then you have a super computer
-
I think it looks very similar to a7s but better for stills because of extra size of photo sensor I think - but i messed with it so quickly I still think to wait for a7s II if you can samsung nx1 is great - it surprises me more every day- i mostly just use it as a scouting camera. the a7r ii and a7s has more dynamic range but there is a punch in resolution to the image of nx1 - but i still like the color better out of the a7s and a7r ii i look forward to the next round of the samsung camera
-
Have you read the EULA for facebook or twitter or your iphone or android phone? Or just every time you use google or amazon. It's crazy. And the NSA collecting everything - none of us have privacy.
-
Cine 2 is really not much worse than CINE4 for dynamic range - I would recommend CINE2 then.
-
Anyone notice anything worse about the Davinci Resolve PC version over the Mac version? Because I think I am jumping ship from apple to PC - the Thinkpad p50 seems like a mac pro but $2000 cheaper - and all I really need is resolve to edit my stuff and color. I'm pretty much done with final cut pro - and therefore done with the price gorging - all the cult-like Apple BS at their stores - and just all of it. Windows 10 I have been using for 3 weeks or so - super stable. I love it. Works very fast and well. So goodbye to you Apple, I hope. You have a really nice OS but it's not worth $2000. Also this way I can play the Witcher 3 and GTA V on the road!
-
awesome - the Lenovo p50 looks like the future of laptops - 5.6 lbs is heavy but damn that graphics card and CPU - seems to probably be as fast for Resolve as a MacPro! I am seriously going to eye this one. Comes out it seems quarter 4. My mac pro is in the shop - was traveling with it - and it can't really handle the wear and tear of the road. Been in the shop for over a month -
