This is incredible. Thank you for writing this. Yes puts it all into perspective. Cameras should never be preordered. Only ordered after proper tests are made. The whole preorder game is not smart. Also waiting for firmware to come up to speed. Better to wait 6 to 12 months after a cameras release. Great article ebrahim!!

Here's a film I shot in 2013 with the Sony F35 using Cineon colorspace with some impulz luts that I just went back in and graded. Here's the original grade I did a year ago: And here's the full short film - grade I wasn't able to help with due to my schedule. It's subtle but the difference is big when going into Cineon camera space to work - what tectures one can get in.Also I worked more this time on vignette, on playing with sharpness and making grain and noise more subtle. Also adding a blur to the outside of the footage. It's amazing how much you can change an image based on the grade - how important it all is. And how I have developed my sensibilities in color since 2013. How it comes from exposure to films that are shot very well - to learn to see with color and light - it's all trained experience that one gets from just watching more and more films. How more and more I learned to care about the grade - to now want to be there to help with the grade. We can really get into cameras, lenses, and more, but in the end, the edit and the grade are the gate keepers of image. And image is very important for a story - it's a visual medium. So much comes from the look of a film. This isn't just radio. Visuals are much of what a film is, and can help make or break the narrative. Sometimes films can break out with poor narrative and poor acting and good cinematography, but it's a giant package. Just as in photography, a compelling photo could be framed poorly or well - and usually if it's framed better, it will overall be a more compelling experience. The right angle, the right shot is so fascinating to chase - to be creative of where to put your camera to tell the story. And more and more I think we cinematographers need to be there to help with the grade, to make sure we can help translate and get the final image to where we want it to be. I saw this brought up in American Cinematographer and more and more I agree with this. We need to be involved with the entire process.

Damn revisiting this all - I need to take a fricking break from online forums. Sorry guys for all this. I am putting myself on a self-imposed camera board ban of 6 months starting now.

I mean, beyond the person who is banned. They get others to get upset. Not a good atmosphere for one's living room party if you start kicking people out. The remaining guests get a little quiet.

I agree. The copyright infringement thing was a problem that could have been examined via youtubes style perhaps? The majority of films on there are by students kr those with no money. People using it as a tool. As long as the film is not for monetization. Im sure they could have implemented

Dvx did ban me. It just doesnt show up under ones name as being banned. I like your response. The whole red weapon thing was a poltical trojan horse to show them all that drooling over the fufure unpromised camera is a giant waste of time. And boy did i get them. Yes their colorscience works on all red cameras. Thats the escret they dont want to get out. That a 6000 buck red one mx can look better than a 30000 buck red weapon if graded well. And it still overheats less probably. That is bad for them. And if they were smart they would know jimmy jinnard billionare ceo threw the first stone. I was just there to get back at them for how they treated geoff boyle and art adams. Important members of the filmmaking communittee. I didnt expect to get banned fron dvx in the process. But reading about how they went after andrew. I wouldnt want to be a part of that club. Ill miss. No one. Cause i can email the person or call them. Banning people is dumb. So is having visable moderators whose emotions can get in the way. Like reds or dvxusers guys. They are like the annonying school hall monitor trying to get brownie points. Just keep mods invisable. Dont allow them to interact. Follow reddit and facebook and twitters example. Banning is bad. Deleting is bad. Just close threads. Or people leave.

I know the odyssey 7q+ will work with it. the camera should be fine being on that long - very good battery life.

I read in a book that the best creative writing students, as told by the teacher, really just at the end of the day, try to make themselves happy. With that said, I think feedback is so vital towards anything - and being humble to accept it when it's good and know when it's bad, and when to trust your gut, and when not to. It's tough, it's like being blind, being an artist. No right answers to any of it. And when you see something amazing, it can be so inspiring as well. And subconsciously you try to make your own work speak to others like that piece of work spoke to you.

Thanks so much but I'm not - just trying to learn things as I go along. It's a confusing bumpy road and it's an interesting world of taste and preferences, of influence from other forms of better films and life.

Here's a feature I shot on the Sony F3 - resolution aside - the color information is quite excellent - and you can make some really lovely stuff with it.

I think the GH4 will become a very viable camera once it gets v-log if they don't mess it up. I still like Canon's skintones so much - as well as Nikon. But not their video capabilities - the moire and all that is pretty crappy. Samsumg NX1 skintone is good - albeit a little too magneta for me - still haven't made it not feel as good as Nikon or Canon stills. I wish Nikon would rise from the ashes and make a killer video/stills hybrid. Until then Samsung NX1 is good for me. Still don't like the skintones or noise in the A7S. But I haven't really used it much since the first tests I did with the camera.

Well said, also side note - EOSHD has double the traffic of Cinema5d. So booyah on that too! http://www.trafficestimate.com/eoshd.com

The Arri Alexa log-c is extremely flat - Alister hits it well. It's a log curve that bends as it gets to hightlight handling. The curve feature was first created with Panavision and Sony with the Panavision Genesis. I think. It allows a camera to put more paint into the bucket and expand it later in post. It's basically like a super smooth knee function. Excited for the GH4 v log function - that's great news!

The F3 has nicer skintones off the bat and less rolling shutter issues than the a7s. Also it has less noise in its shadows and ergonomically - it's a pro cinema camera with xlrs, timecode in, etc. I shot a feature with this guy. I own 3 f3s. At 3k, man that is a steal.

First Narrative Fashion Film (2:30) feedback on clarity of narrative?
Ed_David replied to FLING FLING's topic in Cameras
I think it's very dreamy and interesting and moody - great job! -
damn that was beautiful and funny and honest ! great job - I laughed a lot!

Good feedback - thanks guys. I just shot it and also didn't edit it so I can't really talk to the film as content itself. But the DP does sometimes has a say in performance - in this case, it's mostly visual so I guess I do take the fall for the performance The edit - well I'm going to try a version for the DP cut that's faster and feels more like memories failing and breaking - I'm curious to see if that would change performance as well - would be a good test. Thinking of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" how that deals with memory and failing memory. I love that film so much.

I think that's a good call Renaissance, or you'll get banned and have to pick another username like "Enlightenment Man." I think criticism on anything one does is tough, in the real world or online when one can just quickly write something and hit send and not know the effect it has. In Red's case, my calling them out for the Dragon underperforming in its specs considerably on their own forum - (especially the noise factor in that you can't shoot clean above 320 ASA or you have to use the low-light filter and that brings you back to about red epic mx levels but for 15k more) probably hurt their feelings and hence why they banned me. Because it's a forum for red and owned by red company. So that wasn't so smart on my part. Stirring up the hornet's nest. And on this forum, when I started to harshly examine this forum as an example of how we filmmakers need to react and can't not react whether or not an official investigation started when people started to police me for speaking up, that's when I went downhill on this and got posts deleted, etc etc. Even though I did try to apologize and again I'll apologize right now. Andrew and all, I'm sorry for how I acted during that controversy. I made you and many feel bad and probably didn't go about it in a rational way. I meant it with the best intentions . Instead, again I'm sorry and I hope this forum continues to grow and it is productive towards filmmaking and it inspires people to try to make amazing things with less expensive camera and lens systems and find ways to tell stories as well as possible, as technology goes down in price and opportunity increases. And to continue to be creative and an open-source of expression.

DVXuser and reduser and this site - they are all just private sites - so there is no reason why any post can't get deleted or the user banned. That's part of our contract. We post and have fun, and they can ban us. We don't pay for this site. Maybe if we did, we would expect not to get banned as easily.
-
yes. oh well. I can always just view it anonymously - it's not that big of a deal.
-
Well said guys. I've been on dvxuser since 2008 - just got banned yesterday after bringing up a mention that reduser's "who's viewing" count is off by a signifigant amount. They love to ban. This site doesn't really ban which is a good thing - yes more freedom to go wild. Which is good! Good for me because I go wild. But yes a lot of info on dvxuser that I like. Reduser though, is more like a cult - where you can't really call out the red cameras. DVinfo is good, but not really many people on it anymore. Really most stuff is going the way of EOSHD - that's why we need smart and creative people on here to post and say stuff and have fun.
-
EOSHD gets more views that reduser or dvxuser.com - that's impressive! Hats off to Andrew's really interesting articles that find the latest tech and ideas to make our stuff look even better!
-
thanks - yes cinematography is a different way to communicate beyond words. But being able to speak to the director in plain language is important too. So I'm working on the speaking thing. Thanks for putting up with my nonsense.
-
because I use them a lot on jobs where we need 3 cameras or more. Has 10 bit codec output umcompressed and better highlight handling - about 13 stops to my eyes vs 12 stops on c300 and well motion feels better to me. C300 has nicer skintones out of the gate and also has more resoliving detail - but still F3 is a steal right now. And it's better for doc when you need the extra dynamic range in the highlights for doc-like conditions.

Thanks all for the comments - because of you guys I fixed up some of the grain issues! And now it's a staff pick! Composer is Avo Part. He or she is very talented.
