password is "test" crappy half-baked test - but basically shows that nx1 holds it own both cameras were 4k into odyssey 7q + - nx1 seems to have sharper sensor this is a crap test I did in 5 minutes, but shows you that I think you'd have no issue getting the same out of the nx1 or better - and better skintone seperation - same blockiness see if you can go on vimeo to download it
-
looks good - i would still do a secondary color correct - go into his face and add some red - shift midtones and change highlights - less green - just place around
-
adjust the hue as well here's some tests I did today https://www.dropbox.com/sh/seekuaut4iry6an/AADQ0wUn4VvMW2OOeGLrSIlNa?dl=0

Please do so. Thats the whole point of art. You get inspiration then you do it with your style. its a cycle. thats how we all grow.

Here's footage shot with the original URSA: https://vimeo.com/104918710 I have no doubt the Ursa mini will look even better and have better ergonomics when it comes out. It's basically an Alexa look for only $5k. Won't be too hard to sell to producers. We live in crazy times. The amount of color information - the ability for high speed. The weight. Man things are getting nuts. I think the KineRaw has a big challenge since Blackmagic is so established - but we won't know till the camera comes out.
-
I think Red One vs Kine Mini - Red One is old - it is stable - but test it Red One vs Blackmagic 2.5k with speed booster - pretty similar dynamic range - would be an interesting test vs new blackmagic cameras could be interesting too I think a lot of people are selling their red gear right now - so yes check it out - but still I am curious how red one mx compares with blackmagic's offerings - I think the red one mx slightly has better looking motion but that's me again - who knows - need to do a test. always do a test - renting cameras is cheap thanks to lensrental

yes that's what editready developers recommend here - As I said, we’ll keep investigating and then do a writeup, but I think the best advice is if you’re not planning to go through a full LUT/CC pass, you should be shooting video range (16-235), rather than counting on your transcode to clamp your values. I think in general go to pro res HQ unless you need the space. Higher bit rate is always worth it.

MacGregor did this with this test - check it out!

Well I do, I have the NX1 and A7S - but this is a test of RGB cameras - those cameras all output a limited 4:2:2 8 bit YUV or equilvilant and have bad rolliing shutter and are CMOS. These cameras I want to test output 12 bit to 16 bit RGB and are CCD minus the Red One - the CMOS of the group. But I do like the motion of the Red One over the Epic for some unknown reason - something about it feels right. The KineRaw would be a nice camera to experiment with - but I'll wait till it's available stateside. Also of course, the BMCC is nice as well - but I'm testing cameras I have right here.

I'll let Andrew chime in but pro res 422 and pro res hq are both 10 bit codecs 4:2:2 - the difference is the bit rate. So grading is not much different unless it is fast-paced motion or tons of motion like filming water. But do a test to see yourself - process one clip. The big thing is to make sure you have the NX1 set up to output at the proper light level - so that editready doesn't export a crushed-black pro res file.
-
Here's something I shot on the red one mx - it seems to have a better motion feel to it than the dragon or red epic - I don't know why and I can't verify this - but something about it feels better. Still it feels really nice - the red one mx. I'm testing Red One MX vs F35 vs Digital Bolex on Thursday. testing motion, grading, skin tones, etc etc.

What I find the most fascinating about this site is that I think you Andrew started it because you were tired of your treatment on the other sites, including DVXUser.com - amongst others - so you wanted to start a fresh positive thing. But much like Cuba was started with wonderful ideas, soon it became rules by moderators who became just as callous as those you rebelled against. It's a beautiful thing, the cycle of life. Fuzzynormal is one of the smart caring emotional posters on here, and if he wants to make a post about learning how to create rigs to make your camera better, why shouldn't he? Check out these rigs from the 70's - http://www.tonyhillfilms.com/rigs so creative!

here's a useful blog post that talks about this: http://eddavidblog.com/2015/05/12/what-this-dp-learned-from-coloring/ this book is the best I've read on it - also deals with log and Raw camearas - http://www.amazon.com/Color-Correction-Handbook-Professional-Techniques/dp/0321713117 and this guy is a hero and inspiration on coloring - he had no background in it - http://juanmelara.com.au/print-film-emulation-luts-for-download/

4k images are also usually compressed more than a 2k image - so you actually have to do a test and see with test charts if a 4k camera resolves more resolution than a 2k or 1080p camera. so you and your DP do a test - is it night scenes, daylight - what's the feel of the piece - the lighting, the look - filtration. it's not just lets shoot everything on the alexa - sometimes that's the wrong camera because it's battery hungry and heavy. there is not just one universal camera that will open up for film and get it what you need. I remember being nervous when I shot my first show for History channel because we used a letus ultimate on a sony ex1 - when the BBC standard was 4:2:2 8 bit dvcpro 50 - but that's a stupid abritarary rule. no one cares anymore - really - no one cares if you shoot on the sony z1 because at the end of the day it's going to look terrible. Did you see the movie "Once" - shot on the dvx100 - it made $40 million dollars - and the movie was out of focus the whole time. or 28 days later - canon xl1 with the p+s technic mini35 adapter - shot on minidv- made $150 million dollars. or avatar, the highest grossing movie of all time, shot on a 2/3' 1080p camera.

You know who else got that speech - me. Well everyone has had this speech. Let's see who else - oh right - Louis C.K. who started making short films. But this is the thing I sense talent in baxter's film - he has something to say, more so than most of online films that are Terrence Malick rip offs or Wes Anderson rip offs or Horror films - I feel that there is something here. And I'm sure Louis C.K. wanted to quit, but he didn't - he kept going, he got more honest - he found his voice. If you are an artist, you're going to do your art whether or not "the public" likes it - because you need to - it's a tool - a coping mechanism for life. A way to process life. Maybe Baxter can do it for fun and not try to make money off it - that's fine. Once you "start making money" you get a lot of people telling you to change things. And that's not fun either. Shoot your weddings, make them beautiful - do whatever you are doing and make it beautiful - if you have a mop, mop as well as you can. I spent 7 hours last night regrading two pieces I shot, not because someone asked me to but because I wasn't happy with them. And I'm still not happy with them, but I am happier.
-
I think also you can 1. white balance your shot 2. adjust the tint with the log buttons, for shadows, midtones and highlights 3. power windows 4. then iso out with color picker your skin tones and put these were you want them 5. do a secondary color correction pass 6. apply the final lut to the image seems to work well but it's tough to do but it works pretty well.

Fuzzynormal is not saying to writers you don't need to write a script - he just is saying let's figure out how to make our already existing cameras better. Like for instance, the anamorphic adapters or interesting rigs or drones - so that people are learning how to get somewhere with what they already have - vs just spending the rest of their lives upset that they don't have the next camera. Now that most cameras can shoot log - it's getting pretty equal to what a camera can do. Lenses , filtration, lighting, composition, and grading are just as important as buying the alexa mini. You can shoot poorly on the alexa if you don't have these skills. It's not the shoes, it's the basketball player.
-
unfortunately it's not that simple - 4k images are also usually compressed more than a 2k image - so you actually have to do a test and see with test charts if a 4k camera resolves more resolution than a 2k or 1080p camera.
-
you can easily upres a shot film on a decent camera like the alexa or f35 to 4k and no one will notice. Actually recently my man Nate said he did a test between amira at 2.6k uprezed to 4k and sony f55 at 4k and the amira resolved more resolution. it's all a gimmick. 4k is the next 3d. Just there to sell tvs. But not many people even notice 1080p vs 720p while watching 10-20 ft from a tv - and also compression is the major thing - not resolution - gosh in the US the TV cable stuff is soooo compressed - it has gotten to youtube levels of quality.

this is a very good place to start - http://juanmelara.com.au/print-film-emulation-luts-for-download/ i use movies i love - turn to jpeg and bring into resolve and look at it on a waveform and just think about them a lot - really think about the look then experiment experiment experiment till you are happy It's art - there are no right answers - and it takes so long to get anywhere then the next day you aren't happy! and go back and redo and redo.
