I think now a days we can all shoot log - and we get lost in that log - we get used to that flat look - but rewatching monsters - it has a deeper s curve and dark black and nice raised midtones - it’s bolder - it’s more natural I think - more like the cinema that I grew up on. It's hard to throw out dynamic range when you have it, but sometimes you have to - and you'll love it. below I took out window detail to gain a pop that I enjoyed - maybe if I graded better I can do a power window and have it all!

there are tons of streaming indie film sites - my favorite is https://mubi.com/ - $5 a month film school in a box for $5

I think they stopped being so lenient on blocking copyrighted songs after traffic seems to have gone down. A lot about the UI is broken still - such as the search and so many other things - I really do think they should put ads on the videos - and let the viewer decide if they want them or not like youtube. If this would be some way to keep the free experience moving - understood it's video - it's expensive as heck. And the world has moved towards mobile and with 3g and 4g - not many people want to download videos anymore. I think the internet has changed so much since the smartphone and unforutately - less and less people are viewing content on a desktop computer or television - the smaller videos that is. I hope there is some other people thinking of solutions for all this - because vimeo and youtube gave a rise to up and coming filmmakers - a proving ground. And it definitely help create my career and way of life. To see that window fading away is slightly sad!
-
yes that was also a thread I started. There is no instance of them wanting to improve their site beyond the paid content - so I'm looking at alternative options for artistic videos.
-
The more and more I look dumbfounded at vimeo, the more I now know that it's no longer trying to be the "artistic" version of youtube - a free social-media website for film lovers - now it's competing with netflix and amazon on demand to moreso be a pay to play website. And I guess I have to realize this change - the service has been around since 2008. I think really it's now a facebook/vimeo game to show short films to try to get viewership and have small films get viewers. It's the end of the era, I think. What does everyone else think?
-
I think they look nice - but yes everything with a grain of salt. it's like asking 20 different DPs to light the same scene - each one will do it differently.
-
I agree with both sides - none of us wants to have a "preset" look define us - but they are good starting points - I am very guilty of using filmconvert and impulz luts for all my work - I have made a few custom luts - but it's good to have a jumping off point - in the end it's all the same - if you do it yourself or you use someone else's starting point. Whatever gets you to a look that feels right for that story, for that film, commercial, doc, etc. There is no magic bullet. And speaking of magic bullet - back when the magic bullet app was the only game in town for color grading done easily, man did some people do some really terrible "preset" looks and call it a day. I think resolve is helping all of us discover more and more about color. And yes it takes years and years to understand it all - hence why some colorists are paid I think over 10k a day.
-
great job guys - these all look really nice! yes James loves to lift the blacks! I enjoy the looks he gets on his footage very much. tweak tweak tweak. I like the digital bolex stuff you got a lot - great job!

this is fascinating - thank you for sharing this!!! Wow I am now super curious about this film stock!!

Sony FS7 Review – Shooting 150fps in the dead of night
Ed_David replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
lafilm, my goal now is to reveal who you are. You remind me of some weird Begby-type person who uses slang like "cat" and "geeze" and "city of angels" - no one who lives in LA has ever called Los Angeles the "city of angels" so there's that - 1. older probably male 2. definitely doesn't live in LA. 3. check the time stamps. 4. check the IP. 5. check all of his posts - cross check with facebook posts of a catfish "woman" from LA who also commented recently on the untalked about issue. 6. wait for him to bite 7. compile more lists 8. or move on with my life and have to deal with finishing the coloring on a friend's film - maybe I should stop procrastinating -BATMAN -
definitely - i start with impulz then second layer start modifying over all then third -10000th layer start playing with the frames - brighten this, darken this - etc etc - very excited for resolve 12 to come out soon as well. Blackmagic is doing so amazing.
-
I like that technique personally I think Filmconvert though has this weird magneta highlight thing going on with all its emulations - and that it doesn't really nail the film grain that well - it doesn't seem to feel as authentic how it handles skin tones or highlights - how it gets the blues in the sky - I feel like impulz gets there closer right away. I used to be the biggest filmconvert fan - but I am seeing certain limitations with it all. And on custom luts - I have had little luck - I feel like it's a matter of pride to say you create one's own - and but I just hit walls with my own stuff - but it's me - I'm not trained as a colorist at all - I'm just learning as I go along.
-
So now it's been about 2 years since I started messing with Resolve and time after time, I find that Visioncolor Impulz luts are the best tools to get any footage - from DSLR to Alexa to look like film and in my eyes to look the best. Their webpage has an incredible manifesto about why using a LUT is good - is cool - is acceptable - and I couldn't agree more: http://www.vision-color.com/impulz/ The other luts I tried aren't - and I've tried them all - well the big ones and the new one but I don't want to mention their names because I don't want to say anything negative but the popular one has too much magneta in the highlights and has weird film pattern that looks artificial and the other one that just came out just has like 10 luts - not customized per each camera's view of what is acceptable for a film stock.

Again I won't get into details - but the majority of domestic abuse survivors do not go to the police. I believe the estimateion is that 95% of them do not go to the police. Also furthermore, this is two women who came forward. You may be able to write off one person as "crazy and a liar" but for two ex-girlfriends - who dated phiip for over 2 years - two of them. Not one. Not some random person who claims she knew him. Two of them. Two women - real names, real posts - real actual people that Philip verifies he dated. And verified he was in love with. Two women come forward and you take the side of a guy who you don't know over two women verified by this person you don't know because you watch his videos and enjoy his smile and like his comments and thoughts? This is the world I am living in. This is the world I have to breathe in, share with, that the vast, vast majority of domestic abuse survivors never come foward because they are scared to - because you guys don't believe them - that they tarnish their reputation by doing so? This is the world that Bill Cosby can drug and rape over 18 women in, and it happens everywhere - all over the place. Let me make this personal - if your friend named Jenn just called you crying and says she wants to meet up adn you meet up and she says that her boyfriend five years ago physically abused her and then she posts it and all of a sudden another ex girlfriend who also dated him also says she was abused mentally and physically by him - what would you do? Would you let the boyfriend who you also kind of know just keep doing this? Or would you try to end the cycle? Would you do everything in power so that your friend's coming forward about it is acknowledged? But what if you really respect her ex-boyfriend's work? What if you were scared that could hurt your own career? Would you speak up or stay quiet. I got this private tweet yesterday - "dear ed, I really respected your work but now I don't" - that's interesting that tweet - because one - why would you suddenly disrespect my work - when I live and breathe these issues into everything I frame. Nothing has changed from what I shot 5 years ago and now - only thing that has changed is that I am no longer scared to express my opinions in the written form. People have attacked Kessler Crane and now Tom Guillette - the timelaspe guy because he supports Kessler for speaking out. It's amazing what I'm seeing in our community. Attacking people for their stances, their beliefs, calling for boycotts and all that - for standing up against domestic violence and taking the side of two women. Not one but two. "MAKE THIS THREAD STOP" - why because you disagree with it - we must now delete this thread? Because it's useless - well don't read it. If you don't think any of this matters, or if you don't want to have your feelings hurt or question your own ethical code on a random filmmaking forum about low-cost cinematography and storytelling, that's quite interesting there. No camera, no 16 stops of dynamic range or motorized slider will stop that - from the real underlying issues that actually matter in this world. The point of all this gear, of all these tools and lenses, is to tell stories - to tell them in a way that helps the story - to change opinions and ideas - not the other way around.
-
Yes it's purpose shows me validity of the scientific paper I read on domestic violence - the hypothesis turns out to be true. And this is an area of society that needs to be changed. Thank you guys for this. An interesting metajourney thru the world of anonymous web forums. Thank you guys all so much, now I have a good idea for a story. "how to solve the modern world's internet crisis of self in a world of the anonymous unconnected connected"
-
awesome post - well said!

Sorry but have any of you been victims of domestic abuse Or have studied it? The majority never come forward. If they do its usually years later. Did you guys even pay attention during the bill cosby issue? Most charges are 20 plus years later. How many here have empathy towards abuse victims or have looked into it at all? Raise your hands Anonymous forum posters. Or are you too busy caring about 2 new cameras from blackmagic that dont have internal recoding options or the new 4 third in chip camera from panasonic with a fixed lens? Heres a link to davinci resolve 12:http://www.safehorizon.org/page/domestic-violence-statistics--facts-52.html

It's not rumors and hearsay - it is testimony from two ex-girlfriends who dated him for over two years. This is evidence that can be held up in a court of law. This is actually serious - if one lies about this, it is grounds for a lawsuit. Defamation of character. So the ex-girlfriends put themselves on the line - they could suffer punitive damages for lying. Both of them. That's something there. If you dismiss their testimony, you are allowing for the continuation of "cultural attitudes" that the abuser is considered innocent even with testimony in cases that usually have no evidence where the abused usually doesn't come forward till years later which makes it so easy for domestic abuse to happen. Society allows it to happen because it seems like the default reaction in our society is that "the woman is lying, they are crazy and weird and all is fair in love and war".. I think the people who enable this system to continue are part of a trend I find unjust. Here's my concession to you - if it was a man or woman who was just a one-night stand who said, "philiip beat me" I wouldn't have taken it as seriously unless I heard more about it or did see proof - but these are two of his long-term ex-girlfriends who have friends who vouch for their character. There is a difference there. Having friends who also risk ridicule and abuse come forward and support a firiend's claim and also state that their friend talked to them about the abuse of Philip further can be used in court. You can ask a friend as a witness about the character of the accuser. Also , and this is for my own research, did any of Bloom's friends come forward - real friends, not just internet followers of him. Friends who spend time with him, who hang out with him? That can vouch for his character? Shouldn't this be private - again, no, we have domestic abuse in our face publicly and we are now forced to deal with this issue. We cannot hide our heads in the sand because it's a private matter. Domestic abuse is everyone's business. Just as I would side with anyone on this forum who came forward with a legitimate claim of domestic abuse.

Their testimony holds up as evidence in a court of law. But thats the thing. They arent going for a lawsuit. They have moved on. Sarah merely wanted to show the world that her ex was abusive towards her and a hypocrit for calling out physical abuse on set of top gear where the star punched a producer and most people were quick to defend the star. And i am protected to say all this because i am not making anything up and havent lied once. We are all free in the us and the uk to draw conclusions about any matter in the world based on available public evidence. This isnt based on rumors. This is based on publically available documents. Did anyone here see alex gibneys film om scientology? Its similar in that hes just cultivating facts and interviews. They had 110 lawyers approve his cut. This is unfortunately what it looks like to be a filmmaker. You ruffle feathers. Interesting right? Maybe this will encourage some of you to make a few fipms or try something controversial in life or maybe you guys would be too scared to be in my position? Also these anonymous filmmakers judging me...oh my! Scary!

The trial of ed david continues. I havent caused emotional abuse towards the subject bloom. I can easily argue that what i caused is frustration And probably duress. Do you guys know what emotional abuse means in a domestic partnership? I havent said one false thIng. I havent even insulted him or called him a name. The only ones who resorted to name calling have been some lf you. I believe one lf you called him the green river killer. Thats not nice.

Stories don't have two sides - they have thousands of sides. I have all the evidence I need to make a conclusion just as all of you have this as well. As I stated before, I am a reactionary person and I trust my gut. My gut tells me to believe his ex girlfriends over his own testimony. Am I a criminal psychologist with mountains of books and studying behind me? No, I'm just a filmmaker and cinematographer. Just another person. Just one voice and one opinion. Does that mean I don't have the credentials to have an opinion? Unfortunately I don't believe in credentials meaning much. I have a friend from college who is incredibly book smart but lacks emotional intelligence. This does not always make her the best source to talk to about certain issues. One of the smartest people I interviewed on a doc about racism and mass transit in Atlanta was a homeless man. He knew more about how to possibly remedy the problem than about 4 different professors I had interviewed. I spent 8 years in school studying French, and I can't hold a single conversation with anyone in French. I'm glad you have books - it is good to have good access to an understanding of psychology and criminal psychology but this is also a cultural issue and philosophical. It's a wide ranging issue. And as this thread is about, it's not about Philip so much for me anymore, it's about how all of you react to A) charges of domestic abuse and also a person coming on this forum asking a filmmaking forum to take a stand, not just "wait for more information to come in when there probably will be no more information coming in." That is why I started a 2nd thread. The third thread will talk about how you guys treated me from the 2nd thread. But really, I'm not going to do that. Because of 2 direct messages I received from two of you that showed the empathy I wanted to find. With this empathy that was displayed privately now I feel good. I know that behind it all, everyone is a decent person. Even Philip Bloom if he did physically and mentally abuse these women. He can become a good person if he admits at least to himself to his problems and finds a way to not repeat his actions. To love himself or meditate or just seek help about it. He has done something terrible, but Sara did not commit suicide as she wrote about thinking of doing ( read her google + post). She is still alive and turned her life around. This is a positive story, perhaps. And I hope I never have to read any other person in our community committing said acts again. Or I will respond again, until one day I don't have to "become the cop and jury" as you guys said. I will forever answer any questions you have about my character, I am fine with that. I am at peace with my friends and lovers and other human beings, but more importantly myself. I no longer hate myself. That was the most important change I made in the past two years. And if Philip hates himself, I hope that he learns to stop. That we all can forgive everyone, including ourselves, which maybe the hardest thing to do.

"Dangerously unfair" to a person accused of physically and emotionally abusing two ex girlfriends who dates him for more than 2.5 years? Not just two random woman who claim he was a one night stand? If two of my ex girlfriends I dated for 2.5 years came forward, Kelly and Ashleigh (names changed), and both said the same things, I would be shocked, consult a lawyer immediately - reach out to them privately and publicly issue a statement denying this, saying I am filing a lawsuit for defamation of character and assure all my sponsors privately and all my clients and friends privately that there must be some mistake - i would reach out to friends who know both me and them and also reach out to their best friends personally and friends and my spiritual leaders and try to find a solution immediately. I would especially interview their best friends and try to figure out what is going on - if it's possible that both of them have suddenly reached some weird "pact" to hurt my reputation. I would especially interview their best friends who posted on facebook that they supported them - and try to understand maybe why also their best friends have turned on me. I would have not fallen the routes of Bloom. Also in terms of research on percentage of falsely reported instance of abuse by two women or more, I could find no single instance - if someone wants to check harder for me, I will give you credit in the article I am writing next, "I am now going on trial by the filmmaking community for commenting on how the filmmaking community reacted to Philip Bloom reacting to abuse charges." If you want to be a part of this interview, please email me at ed.david@gmail.com
