Canon EOS R5 / R6 overheating discussion all in one place
ade towell replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
No crop in hd, DR seems about the same (hopefully the R5 & R6 get clog3) and apparently decent AF... I guess my point was that it's a lot of money to spend for a hd camera -
Out of those I would go for the Miller as it's local, or Sachtler. Don't cheap out on a tripod you'll only end up frustrated and buying again.

Fuji XT3 - never overheated on me, the only annoyances are 30 minute limit and micro hdmi (same as Canon). Would like the IBIS and better battery life of the XT4 but waiting for them to get all the wrinkles ironed out and for it to go down in price used. Never buy new if I can help it and definitely not being a beta tester/early adopter when a camera has just been released. I have a C100 and have been waiting since forever for Canon to produce an affordable and decent hybrid to go with it, but yet again they have failed to deliver. The XT3 has now become my a-cam as i much prefer the image, and I think will buy another used XT3 (so cheap) and sell up the C100 and leave Canon behind. -

Yep that's the frustrating bit for us who want to use it mainly for video. I don't see them making an S1H style video orientated hybrid which is a shame but probably too niche for their photo camera division. Maybe they'll shift some of this tech into a new iteration of C100/200 with RF mount, whether it be the guts of the R5 or R6 Anyway am happy with my Fuji for now... -
How does that work? đ

Ok fair enough then yes that is not acceptable

Am not a Sony fan so don't burn me, and my ageing memory may well be wrong but didn't they say in the press release there was a heat limit in 4k60 which as far as I know was the mode the Sony overheated in the Florida test. People saying the R5 lasted longer in 4k60 tended to gloss over the point that the A7s3 is full sensor read out in that mode whereas the R5 is pixel binned - so hardly that surprising Do you know what modes were used in that 3 blind men link you posted? Have other modes been shown to overheat under reasonable filming conditions (not just when thrown into an oven) I agree though that no camera at these sort of prices should overheat. Make the camera big enough to handle the heat. Panasonic did it the right way

Canon EOS R5 / R6 overheating discussion all in one place

Ok this is all getting a little silly on both sides. Get a room fellas... I think the problem for Canon is that the R5 overheats in all its decent video quality modes and am not sure how firmware is going to change that too much. The reason Sony is not getting so much flack is that it is mainly in 4k50 where it has shown it can overheat, all other modes seem to be ok which makes it while not ideal a much more useful video camera. They still both should have learnt from Panasonic though about how to deal with heat management rather than try to squeeze it all into a little box. I really hope this isn't the future and we just have to put up with unreliable cameras as they try and push specs we don't really need on us The R5 is definitely a great photo camera and that is why it will still sell presuming it doesn't overheat in that mode too. (even if they don't sort out the video side of it) -

Oh dear. What are Canon playing at this is school boy stuff and so unlike them, it's as if they rushed it out with eye catching specs trying to catch everyones attention for an Olympics that isn't even happening this year -

Yes unfortunately all the decent modes are in hq and overheat, the lower quality modes are awful -

Fair enough I presumed you used your ef lenses with an adaptor on gh5 and could do the same on the S1. I again presumed you used the Canons when you needed good AF. Anyway sorry for the derail, back to the overheating -
Canon EOS R5 / R6 overheating discussion all in one place
ade towell replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
If you've got full frame lenses already I would say the Panasonic S1 is an upgrade on the Gh5 so far as colour (full varicam log), DR, low light are concerned. Is bigger though -
I guess more will be revealed of the A7s3 but there are definitely question marks over its reliability with over heating. People mocked the size of the S1H but as can be seen by the Canon debacle and the new Sony you can't cheat physics with heat management and it looks like Panasonic made the right decision in making a larger solid camera people can trust. Paying over ÂŁ4000 for a camera that may stop working is unacceptable in my eyes and so the R5 is not fit for purpose in a video production. (The A7s3 needs more testing) That leaves the A7s3 and from what I've seen I would say the colour and IBIS are way superior on the S1H, disappointing that the A7s3 doesn't seem to have the same colour dna as the FX9. With RAW and anamorphic modes, higher resolution stills, AF is all that is really lacking I
-
I wouldn't worry about the specs of other cameras, the S1H is a known reliable workhorse ,the R5 seems like an unreliable show pony that I can't see anyone using on a serious video production, the A7s3 looks more solid but we're yet to see what the time restrictions with heat management mean for shooting times... As mentioned above the 4k60p on the R5 is bad, better to have a high quality crop than a sub standard full frame image. And yes the RAW update will take this camera above the other 2 for cheaper more efficient and reliable RAW if that's your thing. 4k 120p is not something I would use very often I'm already cringing at the amount of unmotivated slow mo that is going to be filling up Youtube - but if it's really important then let's see what the quality of the Sony is. All the S1H is really lacking over the other 2 is good AF imho

Highly contradictory reviews on EOS R6 overheating limitation
ade towell replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
From Gordon Laing's samples the non overheating 4k on the R5 didn't look great. Am wondering if they could make a video specific version a la S1H and accept they need to make it bigger and incorporate a fan so that it's reliable in all modes or at least 4k HQ. Maybe bit niche but I would be interested in that, I like the ergonomics of the S1 when using big full frame zooms -
Looks like full size hdmi, that would make it a far more attractive camera to me, don't trust the micro hdmi Canon and Fuji still use
-
Being someone who does video with a bit of photography occasionally I don't personally have an issue with the 12 MP but can see that putting many people off. My main worry would be as with Canon - how are they going to deal with overheating. The A7 has always been about being small with full size sensor and has run into heat issues in the past. Trying to cram so much tech into a smallish body has its problems. But if they can some how manage that with the new colour science and some more of their AF cine lenses it could be a great companion to the FX9

Nikon will announce Z6s/Z7s updates, with dual card slots and 4K 60fps

Sorry if you get that impression, I'm not stalking you just found your comment a little ironic after the discussion the other day. Anyway hopefully no harm done, I come in peace, back to the Z50... -

Sorry for the slight off topic but it's funny you didn't describe the canon RP (1.6 crop) in such disparaging terms when you were bigging it up against the Fuji XT3 the other day. I think the z50 has its place although I agree that it is going to have a hard time against its more established mirrorless competitors until the price goes down even if it does seem a better spec'd camera -

John Brawley has said they are still tweaking the IR filter and it will be a different one on the final camera release From.dvxuser.com IR filtering is still being tweaked. My comments wouldnât mean much because I had a prototype camera that had a different IR filter than what will ship so thatâs a bit difficult to draw conclusions from. I used all internal NDâs on my shoot. There was also a calibration difference with my camera that wasnât picked up till recently. Most of the RAW files are shot at the default WB of 5600K +10, which is the âstandardâ BMD daylight default. BUT When you start to go into he RAW tab youâll find itâs really about -500K to -1000K (Less warm) and -5 to -10 tint (less magenta) I didnât change these on my initial clips, but I have on these ones... https://vimeo.com/440479199 Which also by the way show the 8K and 4K modes đ
