    Lenses

Unused kit clear out continues. I've decided to sell my Electric Set, my set of vintage Russian/German prime glass. 7 lenses with EF adapters on eBay here: Vivitar 24mm 2.8 Panagor 28mm 2.5 Mir 1-B 37mm 2.8 Carl Zeiss Jena 50mm 2.8 Helios 44-2 58mm 2.8 Jupiter-9 85mm 2.0 Tair 11A 135mm 2.8 Blog post and some sample footage here. What are these lens and what are they not? Well, they are not sharp like Master Primes. They are not a matched set. They are not a budgetcinegearringeddeclickedsuperset. But, in each of their own ways they have a fabulous character which brings loads to the party in terms of image quality. The exception to this is the Tair - this lens is a genuine rival for modern telephoto primes - crackingly sharp, long focus throw and marvelous bokeh. Google around for info on the look of each lens or ask me questions here or through eBay.
  2. Yep, 7D does shoot raw. All of those resolutions I listed are the raw resolutions one can shoot with the camera. I've never used a 60D so I can't compare them directly.... but yeah, basically the 7D is much better as it uses CF rather than SD cards, can reach higher resolutions and record for longer.
  3. It depends a bit on frame rate, normal vs 3x crop, continuous or buffer limited - but at 25fps I get: (1.2:1ish) 1504x1156 - continuous (4:3ish) 1600x1156 - continuous (1.5:1) 1728x1156 - 42 seconds (16:9) 1728x972 - continuous (2.39:1) 1728x724 - continuous These last two upscale to fill a 1080 frame really well. You can get all sorts of wacky huge resolutions in 3x crop mode but only nine or ten seconds of footage before recording stops. The Kowa is 2x. I shot that vid at 1472x1156, unsqeezed and scaled down to fit 1920x804, slightly cropping left and right.
  4. 2015 has been unexpectedly busy already work-wise. This is awesome but it means that I have no time for personal projects and so I'm selling my Canon/Kowa anamorphic setup. I've used this mainly for home movies and fun little things and just love that look.... but I can't justify it sitting lonely on the shelf like a guilty secret. Here's the breakdown from L-R: Komputerbay 64Gb 1066x CF card2 x Canon batteriesCanon 7D3rd party battery gripStrapEOS lens capM42/EOS adapterHelios 44-2 58/2 (has a 49mm-58mm ring glued to the front)58mm-52mm ringRedstan ClampKowa 8-Z AnamorphicRedstan Filter Clamp72mm-77mm ring77mm lens capAll in really good condition apart from the helios which is in the condition of a helios! Oh, and a battery charger of course. And here is the last thing I shot entirely with this combo: If you are looking to get into anamorphic RAW shooting this kit is everything you need on the hardware side to get started. Blending the 7D raw with the helios and kowa gets you a look very like 16mm film to me with all of the incredible flexibility of raw video. £1000 including paypal fees and tracked UK delivery. Discounts for cash and you are welcome to come inspect in Oxford. Will post overseas at buyers expense. If you want me to shoot something specific or you have any questions message me!
  5. Hi Ben -I'm interested in this lens and would love to come take a look. Sent you a PM.
  6. Updating this thread - the project I was going to shoot on anamorphic has been pushed for a few months and I've been using the extra prep time to sort out the workflow and settled on one I like, to wit: Export the DNGs from AE in Grass Valley HQX using standard quality and also in 10-bit DPX. Use the HQX as proxies to edit in Premiere and then replace with the DPX files when it's time to render out. What really rocks about this is that the HQX files are 10-bit, so even with standard quality files you can grade quite aggressively before the image breaks down. Thus you can grade these files directly and get a pretty clear idea about what is going to work in your final version once you've switched in the DPX. Alternatively, if you have a faster machine you can skip the DPX entirely and just boost the quality on the HQX export to maximum and just edit, grade and render these directly. This doesn't give you absolutely the best possible grading latitude (its 4:2:2), but is plently good enough for most stuff. The standard qual HQX files don't playback quite as sweetly as the DXnHD 36 proxies I use when shooting spherical, but generally speaking, this workflow is winner.
  7. Thanks - that was an extremely smart post. I'll try this out when I get around to some tests in a couple of weeks. Had any experience with Grass Valley HQ(x)? http://www.grassvalley.com/products/hqx_codec Would outputing a TIFF sequence be a viable alternative?
  8. Chris / Tito - this thread rocks. I'm going to be doing a project similar to this in a couple of months and wanted to pick your brains on this workflow. I'm going to shoot ML Raw on a 5d3 in 1600x1200 with a 2X anamorphic. Normally shooting Raw on spherical lenses I would go from Raw > DNG > open ACR in after effects, grade and then export in DXnHD > edit in Premiere. Thinking about this yesterday I realised that this would be problematic for my anamorphic shoot because I can only export in 1920x1080 in DXnHD. Not a problem if I was delivering in 1080 but I would like the option of editing in 3200 x 1200 for upscaling for theatre projection. I'm using Windows, which rules out Prores and don't yet have a machine capable of running Resolve. Any thoughts on alternative codecs/workflows that will enable me to edit in a larger resolution rather than squashing all this detail to 1920x1080 with bars?
