5 underrated cinematic images from "forgotten" cameras
Volker Schmidt replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
A nice comparison 5dmarkII vs 5dmarkIII magic lantern raw. Both look very good, but you can see some aliasing issues on the 5dmk2: -

I also found a few older clips - outdoor daylight - that I edited together. Unfortunately, already compressed and processed. -

Probably it is that here, what you meant Zach: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6215.0 Very useful for all your questions, Ricardo. -

Same for me too. It´s like filming 35mm. And adjusting the raw material in After effects is like having my own film lab:). Great fun and extremely cheap! -

For me the VAF is worth! But as Andrew said before, when you have in mind when the problems occurs, you can avoid them. But generally I can say that the 5dmk2 - also with raw, falls quickly in this issue. Just one thing: remember, that for 1min it takes approximately 4GB on your card. If you film a lot, it is maybe not the right camera. -

Here, how the first shot looks with less grading and without additional grain. I find it very impressive for a 7 years old camera at ISO 1600. (Sorry Zach, the weaknesses of the script are unfortunately also be seen here:). -

Propably it is the Computer on which I´m sitting at the moment:) Definetly jerky in general. -

Last week I made a very quick test with my 5dmk2 MLraw and a slider. Once again very pleased with the image, but the Clip in Vimeo is a bit jerky what I haven´t noticed before... (before uploading). So, I would like to find out where in the process it occurs. But the cinematic feel is nice, I find. -

Found this also today: https://www.zhdk.ch/index.php?id=92206 Very nice Project from 2012. There is a lot to discover (& lot of footage) on the headings on the left side. -
For those who might be interested in such things: http://www.yedlin.net/DisplayPrepDemo/ The download version is recommended!

Hi Mercer, Hi Zach, the Filter affects stills in the same way as described above: a little less overall sharpness, less sharpness on the corners, etc... - but probably it is important to say: you can´t use the optical viewfinder! ... the mirror is always open while using the VAF! So, with the VAF in stills mode, you always have to use LiveView. As mentioned above: all in all there is a noticeable reduction in resolution when shooting stills... But, as Zach pointed out: it takes a few second to exchange it... -
That's a nice discovery! Thanks for sharing! Looks like a still from an Antonioni film...

BTW: To slow down the 5dIIraw euphoria a bit… Moiré and Aliasing is unfortunately as bad as we know it from 5d-h264. The VAF Anti Aliasing Filter comes with the limitations that Andrew pointed out (a bit less overall sharpness, less sharp on the edges with wide angle lenses, focus point changes during zooming…anyway I would recommend it!). Independently of this, the max. resolution with my 5d2raw setting is:1872x850 (aspect ratio 1:2,20). So you have to upscale it to HD. If you want to shoot in 16:9, the horizontal resolution is reduced even more. Nevertheless I love the image quality, for several years. -

Which camera is the best, always depends on personal needs. But the taste regarding image quality varies occasionally. Nowadays it is great to form an opinion with the help of webvideos. For me, for example, only the image quality is important, which corresponds to my taste the most, the Handling is secondary. Concerning this, I also prefer 5draw and red1MX (over other Cameras) regardless of the weaknesses. For me, the claim of a camera is, to be able to make a feature film with it. For other needs, this cameras could be the worst of all!:). That's a truism, but I think it´s worth to remember sometimes… -

I remember the test. Very, very nice rendering of both cameras. You´re right: Sony F35 and Red One MX have magic! -

Hey Andrew, what's going on...? Feels like: "The last will be the first":) This is also a good example regarding color and skin tones, etc. -

Beside the fact, that the Sony picture really looks awful - the 5draw image really looks good:) and so much more 3d! The depth of the space is "tangible" while the Sony image is just flat! But this can also be related to the lens. -
hmm, the name of the jpgs says the opposite, but the last one really looks more like a 1DC...

Absolute!:)

I´am not a fan of the marketing thing of RED: The company logo, the military-productnames...etc. But here, the image is simply: "big cinema"! - for a low price! No need, to talk that bad:). Definetly a camera to make a nice-looking feature film!
-
...amazing looking images! Also the "Last test..." Clip: superb, cinematic looking images. Congratulations for this purchase!:)

I have both: the Minolta MC 35mm 1:1.8 HH and the 28mm MD 1:2. Both are great lenses: the 35mm is a kind of magic in terms of sharpness and 3d rendering! The 28mm MD is also very sharp, but better in case of colors...(in my opinion). I do the conversion by myself, so that wasn´t expensive, but has cost a couple of hours - work. Here is the 35mm 1:1,8 and the 50mm 1:1,4: Minolta lenses are underrated!

I think it also make sense when we call our camera/sensor size: I film in Full Format (5d) and after testing a lot of lenses, especially primes, I came back again to the Canon 24-70mm/2,8 L MKI as my main lens! In the end it has beaten all of my other lenses in case of "character" and color rendition! But under special circumstances I love several Minolta lenses, (modified to EF mount): Minolta Rokkor MD 45mm 1:2 - a 30,-€ lens with a beautiful color - and 3d performance! Also the Minolta MC 35mm 1,8 HH (excellent sharpness, very 3d-ish, but colors not as good as the 24-70, too blue, too magenta). The Minolta MD 24mm 1:2,8 (Collaboration with Leica) - a ultra sharp and clean 24mm wide angle lens on FF! Nikkor 85mm f2 ai - simply a nice, sharp and affordable lens. Nikkor ai/ai-s lenses always surprised me. They innately deliver a very special cinematic image! I want to have more of it, so I am looking forward to further recommendations... Here a quick test of the Minolta 45mm (f2 is very ordinary, but from 2,8 it shines:)
