  1. What about with an external recorder is it still over heating?
  2. but how does image quality compare between the too with the shogun in 4k and 1080p 60fps and FF and APS-C? Even Andrew said a7r ii has more morie and aliasing. Also does the a7r ii over heat with the shogun. The over heating is a huge deal breaker for me, not the use of an external recorder.
  3. Any one have an idea when sony will annouce a A7s mk ii?
  4. Does anyone in know the pros and cons of buybuying the a7s used vs grey market on eBay?
  5. I need help figuring out the difference in quality, pros and cons of a7s vs a7r ii for 4k and 1080p 60fps with an external recorder.
  6. Which one is better with a external 4k recorder such as the Shogun? I was excited to buy the A7r II but after hearing about moire and aliasing and the heating issue I need help figuring out the pros and cons between the two cameras. Dynamic Range Low Light and noise FF Low Light and noise APS-C Rolling Shutter FF Rolling Shutter APS-C moire and aliasing FF moire and aliasing APS-C 4k FF 4k APS-C 60fps in FF 60fps in APC-s Color Science Skin Tones Heating Issues Other issues Extra Features
  7. No matter what I am going to be using the Shogun for external recording. With the pit falls of the A7r II and A7s which one produces a better image with an external recorder? Such as how does the a7s in crop mode, with speed booster, 4k and 1080p 60fps with the shogun compare to the A7r ii in full frame, 4k and 1080p 60fps with an external recorder? My priorities are heating issues, rolling shutter, moire and aliasing, color, dynamic range, sharpness and low on the list low-light. Also is there Cineflat on the a7s?
  8. Sorry there was a glitch in the video from vimeo. Here it is.
  9. This camera has really been flying under the radar and not getting much love. The dynamic range is really high up there. dxomark its at 14.5 in RAW photo mode. But in video mode with the Flat profile I've run some test with ND lighting gels and a light meter and was easily 12.5-13 usable stops, more so in the shadows. Not to mention for being 8bit files color correction is so easy in resolve. Though I do miss my 5D Magic Lateran RAW for that, but not all the headache came with working with that hack. Rolling shutter, what Rolling Shutter? For being full frame sensor its very impressive, takes a lot to show up. Morie and antialiasing, only once with very specific set up of distance, sharp lens, and certain fabric could I get it to do it. Its actually really hard to make it happen, and I took a raw still at the time and it showed up as well in the RAW 24 mega pixel photo, so it had nothing to do with crappy down scaling. Just that the fabric, lens sharpens, and distance hit the sensor mega pixels frequency. Here is some sample shots from a short film I shot last month. Vimeo and youtube are terrible to judge the video file. Id recommend downloading the original clip. I also shot it all of it on DNXHD 10bit on my Ninja 2 recorder. It actually does make a difference in quality and color grading to use an external recorder. Also the internal files are half the size of 5D and 7D but nikon did there homework and they are still far cleaner and sharper.
  10. Don't forget to check out the Nikon D750 as an option. Just finished a 3 day production for a music video with it and really pushed its to its limits. The Colors are spot on accurate, super easy to grade in post, flat profile gives you huge dynamic range that has a really nice roll off in the highlights. Rolling shutter, Aliasing, Moire hard to find even in my hand held shots with a higher shutter speed. Also combined with the Ninja 2 I get very clean 1080p. I used to own 5D mark III, and Magic latern Raw which was very nice colors with 14bit raw, but nightmare to work with that hack. But I am getting very similar results with D750 and the ninja 2 (even though its only 8bit color), plus more no more rolling shutter and clipping at 11 stops.
  11. I just got my Atomos Ninja 2 today and did some test with the D750. 1080p 23.976 with the internal codec vs Ninja 2 Prores HQ I also did a test with 1080p 60fps internal codec vs Ninja 2 720p 60fps Prores HQ with up-scaling and some light un-sharp mask in CS6 Premiere. both at ISO 800 and with the Flat profile. For 1080p 23.976 the Atomos is not a huge leap in video sharpness,( since the codec is doing a very impressive job) and its hard to tell the difference, especially compressed for web. But I am noticing some better color reproduction and saturation since its 422 compared to the 420. It slightly sharper with the ProRess, less blocky, and noise looks more organic and natural. For the 60fps I was surprised that the Prores HQ at 720p could be up-scaled some sharpness added and almost match the internal 1080p 60fps codec (and look far better than the stock 1080p on the 5D mark iii.). I used to have the 5D mark iii and shot with the magic lantern RAW. Though I love RAW, it was so much of a pain to use the hack that I don't regret switching to the D750. Photography and video is by far sharper, cleaner, much more dynamic range, and very accurate color science ( which is a huge advantage going back to 8bit video from RAW, I barely need to color correct as long as I get the exposure and white balance correct in camera). And before Andrew's review about this camera I would of laughed at anyone who said you should shoot video on a Nikon. Now if this camera could just get some love like the Canon DSLR have had from magic lantern, or Nikon really make some serious firmware updates for better video features, this thing could out beat the current competition, except for the low light capabilities of the Sony A7S (the D750as good or little less than the 5D Mark iii). Also not to mention for photography it has 12bit compressed RAW option, just imagine if Nikon used that for RAW video.
  12. Thank you for the review. I shoot 5d mark iii raw and becoming conflicted with its limitations and headaches, but love the image quailty and color so much. The video of the nikon D750 is the first dslr I've seen that made me intrested in switching back to a none RAW hacked camera. I would really appreciate it if in your part 2 if you did a comparison with the 5d mark III raw.
