Really nice job. Do you mind sharing what NX1 profile settings you used and a little more info on how you graded? TIA Edit- Just read your last paragraph that includes the info I was looking for. Thanks.

There probably won't be any difference between the ProRes conversions from iFFmpeg or Rocky Mountain Converter, because they are both graphical front-end interfaces for the same FFmpeg engine. Did you double check to confirm that your NX1 clips were recorded in the "Pro" bit rate vs the "HQ" or "Normal" bit rate? "Pro" captures a lot more data.

Neo- Do you see the same macroblocking in the OOC H.265 clip? Did you record in "Pro" level before converting to ProRes? I use iffmpeg (Rocky Mountain) to convert my NX1 clips to ProRes and have not experienced heavy macroblocking like this. Q for GH4 users: Do most GH4 users convert to ProRes or another intermediate codec to grade/edit or do most just grade/edit the H.264 clips?

Agolex- Thanks for your video comparison that shows that NX1's exposure drift is definitely NOT normal behavior. Others may disagree, but I think all Firmware 1.10 cameras have the drift problem, because I see it in so many other NX1 videos-- not just the drift demonstration videos. It bugs me so much that I've stopped shooting in Manual mode if I know there may be even the slightest lighting change in a scene. I shoot Shutter Priority and with Auto ISO, because if the camera is going to adjust exposure anyway, might as well have it adjust the right way.

I hope this works. I can't wait to try tonight when I get home. Edit: Didn't work for me. Auto Display Brightness was already off. I tried turning it on and off and it made no difference. Shift is still there.

So far they've just been highlighting the new features in the firmware at CES. I'm sure they don't want to highlight a bug at a sales and marketing convention. We just have to hope that since they were listening to other requests, they picked this one up too and the final release will include a "various bug fixes" note that will fix the exposure drift problem.

http://www.imaging-resource.com/news/2015/01/07/samsung-answers-photographers-requests-preps-major-firmware-update-for-sams It looks like Samsung is listening and moving quickly with firmware updates, especially with regard to video-related requests. The new firmware will include: Output free-run timecode to external recorders using HDMITwo new gamma modes for capturing widest possible dynamic range and a master black level controlLuminance level options to prevent clipping Adjust autofocus speed and reaction time Adjust ISO sensitivity and audio levels while recordingPro Quality compression for 1080p24fps for UHD Extract stills from video in cameraTons of new customization options (reverse control dial directions, Mobile button can be used as Record button, AE-L button can lock focus in movie mode, etc...)Hopefully, this will also fix the ISO shift / Smartrange+ bug in Manual mode.

In the comments to that Learning Cameras video, he said it was shot in Manual and he can't figure out why the exposure was shifting. Maybe someone should show him this thread.

Here is another video shot on an NX1 where you can see some exposure shifting or flickering of some sort beginning around the 1:50 point on. This may be unrelated, because I'm not sure if it was shot in Manual mode or with Auto ISO on, but it just seems like the camera can't decide how to expose and makes continuous distracting exposure shifts. The funny thing is the light does not seem to be changing much.

Here is a video that shows the same problem Ivar is having. This is shot with the Rokinon 12mm.

So I did some testing with my NX1 to find out how to help Ivar and unfortunately I found that I have the same problem and can't find a fix. When panning from a well lit area to a darker area the camera seems to automatically adjusts exposure, but the wrong way! The well lit area gets brighter and dark area gets darker. I can confirm this problem with the following settings on three different lenses (Samsung 16-50 S, 50-150 S and Rokinon 12mm for NX): Manual Mode (Fixed aperture, shutter speed and ISO)Manual FocusOIS "Off"Dynamic Range and Smart Range+ "Off"Framing Mode "Off"Overexposure Guide "Off"WB set to "Tungsten" to avoid AWBExposure mode makes no difference (Same problem with Multi, Center Weighted and Spot)Display Auto Brightness "Off"Camera Firmware 1.10How can the exposure shift if aperture, shutter speed and ISO are fixed? I won't bother posting a video since my video looks almost exactly like Ivar's video, which captures it perfectly. I welcome any help from other NX1 users. I've been through the menus a few times now and can't find anything else to turn off. TIA.

I've tried a few converters for my NX1 footage and here is what I found: The Samsung converter is fine for a high bit rate H.264 conversion, but it's a little slow.Wondershare may be good for Mac users who want ProRes, but it's not good for PC because ProRes conversion is disabled and it only does a poor, low bit rate H.264 conversion.DVD Fab Converter also only does a low bit rate H.264 conversion, which is not that bad, but it crushes blacks and blows out highs.Handbrake was terrible.Rocky Mountain Converter provides a good quality ProRes conversion (even on PC) and a high bit rate H.264 conversion that is also quite good... and it's a little faster than the Samsung converter. It just has a very 1995-ish user interface. These impressions were based on just a few clips in each converter, but I already ruled out Wondershare, DVDFab and Handbrake as options. It's between Samsung and Rocky Mountain Converter from here on, but I need to do more testing in each. For playing back H.265 files, MPC-HC Player and PotPlayer are the only players I could find that play the files smoothly. I can't get smooth playback with Windows Media Player, Cyberlink Power Media Player 12 (included with I-Launcher), or Cyberlink PowerDVD.

After using the NX1 for a few weeks, I have a few items on my wish list that should be easy with firmware updates: Add H.264 as a recording optionAdd a higher bit rate option for recording 1080p (similar to "Pro" for 4K)Allow video resolution, video bit rate and frame rate to be saved with Custom Modes to allow for easy switching between 4K and 1080p60 or 1080p120.Allow switching between EVF and screen while recording video (same as when shooting stills).Allow level gauge, manual focus scale and histogram to be available while shooting video (same as when shooting stills)Give us some color grade-friendly profilesOther wish list items that may be limited by hardware: Give us 4K @60fpsAdapt the "fly-by-wire" focusing with Samsung lenses when shooting video so you can have repeatable focus pulls (make it linear).

I'm seeing a red color cast throughout the video using Chrome and IE. I'll try to view the downloaded file when I get home. Looking forward to your 120fps footage. Thanks.
-
Thanks Andrew. Wouldn't 1080/24p @ 0.25x result in 96fps?
-
The menu options in the manual seem to only show 1080p up to 60fps. How did you get 120fps? Is that the 1/4 speed in the slow motion menu options? This is great news if this really is 1080p @ 120fps and not some interpolated frame garbage some early slow mo cameras had. I too would love to see more samples of slow motion 1080p if you have a chance. Also, I think the NX1 video footage posted so far looks outstanding and I don't think we've even seen the best this camera has to offer. By re-encoding from H.265 to H.264 for editing and playback online, it undoubtedly resulted in some loss of detail and quality. Once we have native H.265 editing and playback, there won't be anything that can touch the NX1 video quality under $10K.

I'm glad I found this forum. Thanks for the review. The NX1 is a very promising camera and I think it's success depends as much on its video capabilities as its still image capabilities. I'm not sure Samsung sees it that way based on this review. The Panasonic GH4 was launched months ago and is selling above expectations (Pany recently doubled production to 5000 units/month) without any price reductions (still $1,699US). The GH4's is a good still camera, but not exceptional compared to other M43 cameras from Olympus and Fuji. It's success is tied to its video capabilities. The NX1 has a larger sensor and lower price than the GH4, so just matching the GH4's video capabilities would make it a huge hit for Samsung. Here is I think what the NX1 needs via firmware update: Ability to record 4K in H.264 at a high bit rate so users have another option until H.265 is ready for prime time. More high frame rate options (e.g., 96fps and 120 fps) for 1080p and 60fps for 4K (if the hardware is capable) Better control over things like peaking, exposure warnings, audio, and more color modes that produce a flatter tonal response to aid post-production.
