  1. Right now I'm sitting about 5 feet away from a 65" 4K TV. I'll probably be using this TV until the end of the decade. The Samsung QN90B is a very good TV and 4K UHD discs look spectacular. Towards the end of this decade, if 8K is cheap enough, why not? Anyway, I'm not really interested in debating whether 8K is necessary or not. Even if the difference between full HD and 4K is minimal, I'm not going to shoot in full HD. I guess what I want to ask now is will 5.7K/6K videos look sharp from about 5 feet away with a future 85" 8K TV? Will it look softer from the same distance with a natively shot 8K video? Thank you.
  2. My understanding is that a shotgun microphone will be one-directional and may not be good at capturing ambient sound? Let's say you're trying to capture the sound of the waterfall or the ambient sound when you're standing by the edge of a cliff in a forest. I intend to use this with a Panasonic DMW-XLR2. https://shop.panasonic.com/products/lumix-xlr-microphone-adaptor-dmw-xlr2 For microphones, I should be looking at something like this? https://rode.com/en/microphones/on-camera/stereo-videomic-x
  3. I'm a total newbie when it comes to videography. I know the correct white balance isn't always the most atheistically pleasing, but I just want to have a way to save it in case I need it. When taking pictures, I shoot RAW and capture another picture with a white balance card under the lighting so that I have a way to set the white balance during post. Ideally, I would edit the white balance on the computer rather than setting it in the camera in the field. I'm reading that when changing the white balance on ProRes RAW, there is little to no choice in quality. What about with ProRes HQ 422?
  4. I don't know where you're located, but in North America, 4K has taken over. I don't even know if Walmart sells Full HD TVs anymore. Reminds me of the early days of digital when people said RAW and higher resolution wasn't worth it when in hindsight that just turned out to be a dumb idea. Anyways, looking at your post, it sounds like 6K videos will look good on a 8K display when viewed from a standard distance.
  5. Uh, if 8K was available then, I'm sure they would have picked it. I'm talking now. Not sure why you're getting all weird about this subject.
  6. I always want to shoot at the highest resolution possible. The Fujifilm X-H2 is probably the cheapest 8K capable camera on the market, but the Panasonic GH7 and a bunch of other cameras can shoot high-quality 5.7K/6K videos. 8K displays will continue to get cheaper and better. It is the future whether people like it or not. Reminds me of all the naysayers about how 4K was useless in the era of 1080p displays. I know the quality of the upscaler will be important. AI upscaling software will only get better in time. Even right now, will 5.7K/6K videos look soft when viewed on an 8K screen?
  7. So the reason why ProRes RAW has my attention is because the Panasonic GH7 has it. It seems like more and more consumer/prosumer cameras have some form of ProRes recording rather than CinemaDNG. I guess whether it has "true" RAW or not isn't really the issue. I want to be able to adjust the white balance on my videos in post with little to no loss in quality like I can with RAW images. This is why I never shoot in JPEG. I have never really worried about file sizes. Storage is cheap even though I deal with video.
  8. I'm not good at imagining how a video will be displayed on a screen. If I want to record ProRes RAW without a crop, I'll have to shoot in 5.7K, which has a 17:9 aspect ratio. When watching a 17:9 video on 16:9, 16:10: and 21:9 screens, what would the black bars look like, and where it'll be?

Thank you so much. I don't think I can get a rule of thirds grid imposed with the frame marker. The video seems to show a rule of thirds grid on before the guy went to activate a frame marker. Once that was enabled, it seems like the grid disappeared.

Does the GH6 have frame/aspect ratio guides? Can i impose a 16:9 guide with a rule of thirds grid on the 5.7K/17:9 area? Can someone please take a picture showing this for me?
  11. I'm just learning about this format. Isn't RAW just RAW? Why would there be ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ? Are both of these formats truly RAW like CinemaDNG?

So I'm reading that ProRes 422 HQ can only be recorded at a max resolution of 5.7K with a 17:9 aspect ratio. Apparently, open gate recording isn't supported and must be shot at 4:2:0. Can I set the GH6 to record ProRes video to the CFExpress card and photos to the SD card? Does the GH6 have frame/aspect ratio guides? Can i impose a 16:9 guide with a rule of thirds grid on the 5.7K/17:9 area? Can someone please take a picture showing this for me? Is the fan loud enough that the microphones can pick it up? What is a good microphone to use with the CLR adapter to record ambient sound? Is face detection and AF decent enough for video?
  13. I'm not really sure where to post this since the digital video forum here doesn't seem to be as active. Open gate recording seems to be a recent phenomenon. I think the Fujifilm X-H2s is the only other camera besides the GH6/GH7 to offer this. Is this really as good as what Panasonic says it is? They frame it as capturing it once and easily change it to the aspect ratio that I want depending on the delivery format. For example, wouldn't I be better off getting an L-plate and recording videos vertically rather than recording them in landscape position, but in open gate? I think I'll get more resolution and potentially the framing or angle of view will be different? Maybe I don't understand things as I'm not an expert on videography. Help me out! Thanks!
  14. Thanks for the response Andrew. I made a mistake earlier. The poster said it's 2.5x in 4K UHD and 2.3 in 4K DCI. The poster even provided the math to show how he got the crop factor relative to full frame. http://***URL removed***/forums/thread/3653516?page=3
  15. I'm getting conflicting information here. On DPR, someone said the GH4's crop factor in 4K UHD (3840x2160p) is 2.6x relative to full frame. Andrew is saying that the GH4's crop factor is 2.3x relative to full frame. What's with the discrepancy here? Btw, I'm referring to the GH4 using native micro 4/3 lenses.
