@sanveerI can upload it on vimeo but I think the point is to have the original file and try grading it. Looking at compressed video on vimeo won't help much to assess the grading latitude. What do you think ?

Hi, Since the drones are becoming trendy I just put a few clips together showing the difference between all the different DJI Mavic "color mode" https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7MbHg2isoWXVlhqVUw1UERHeVU/view?usp=sharing The files are straight from the memory card without any encoding. The Mavic was updated with the latest firmware as of February 14. Each clips is 50 seconds, switching color modes every 10 sec in that order: D-Cinelike D-Log None TrueColor Art >>> Settings: - WB: Sunny - AF: set manually - Style: Standard (+0,+0,+0) - Exposure: Manual Exposure (0 EV) - Resolution and Frame rate: 3840x2160 (UHD) at 29.97fps Feel free to download and try your own grading. Obviously the light (clear bright sunny day) won't fit all scenario but it will give you an idea.

The Phantom series are extremely easy to fly, the P4 and mavic are even more dumb proof with the anti-collision sensors. But at some point you must do the bare minimum, read the manual, watch 30 min of tutorial and train step by step for 2 days. If this is too much for you, stick to your camera and don't ever use a drone. As for the video above with the two idiots from Finland I don t even know where to start: they don't install the prop correctly so of course the thing flip and crash upon take off. They don't remove the gimbal lock... they ignore all the battery warnings and try to fly too far. I mean what do you expect ? The drone is not the problem here.

The Mavic can be found at several US dealers or last minute deal on walk-in (Best Buy, Apple, Drone Nerds) but the current Chinese New Year celebration is not making things easy. As for IQ, the P3P and Mavic can do the job for most situation, TV included. Of course it won't be high end Hollywood stuff but until the Inspire 2 and P4P came out two months ago the entire drone operators world did fine for the last 2 years with the P3, P4, Inspire X3 and X5, all maxing out at 60mbps. All the sudden the P3P and Mavic IQ is not acceptable anymore ? Did the media agencies and customers drastically changed their requirements over the last 2 months ? Of course 100mpbs is welcome and the P4P is great but I wouldn't discard the previous generation of drone especially if you are new into this. Remember there was only 8 months between the P4 and P4P announcement ! Be careful as there is a lot of fake batteries online and the DJI drones really don't like non-standard battery especially since they are "smart" units with the controller and regulator chip inside the battery. It's not just about the quality of the LiPo cell but how well or how bad the Drone and fake/non official battery will communicate. Things can get ugly very fast with wrong firmware and software issue. You can totally crash because a good 70% full battery will suddenly be seen as empty by the drone for instance, triggering the auto-land procedure...

@kisaha I agree, the P3P is a good option in terms of price/quality ratio. You should consider the used market. There are so many people who buy a drone, fly 5 times and put it in the closet. You can get great deals as these things loose so much value so fast. Also consider the accessories prices, the batteries and spare parts are much cheaper on "old" drones. For instance you can find two P3P battery at $250 while a single P4P battery is $170... I would wait on the Mavic, that's the first production batch of the first generation of mini Drone. DJI is known to release products a little bit too early. The Phantom line is now very mature (solved the arm crack, some fly away issue with dual sensors and GPS, etc). But if you need portability, the Mavic is great. The batteries are also "cheap' at $100 per unit. For the P4Pro I wouldn't get the version with the screen as it makes your setup less "upgradable". Some Apps don't work with the screen and you can bet that the next Phantom will require the V2 screen to work. DJI is known to be good at making previous version obsolete with the new one (eg. X5 Raw, controller not compatible between version or drones). I would just buy an Ipad mini or Iphone. I'm an android and PC guy but Apple products are more optimized with DJI.

All good information here. I would add that for slow-mo you just have to adjust all the footage to the lower frame rate in your timeline. If your timeline is at 24, you can take 96 footage and slow it down by a factor or 4 (25% in Premiere).

Again, I think we are dreaming here. The dev team was doing a great work back in the days when Canon revolutionized the enthusiast industry with DSLR video. It's history now, Canon just stays in IDLE (or even backward) while Sony and Panasonic are years ahead. I don't know what could motive the dev team to spend hundreds of hours to work on outdated hardware.

I've been shooting drone for a long time. On a pure technical standpoint (I'm not going to enter in the legal aspect) - Karma: the drone is big, takes forever to warm up, the gimbal has a lot of drift, the radio link is weak and it's not very cheap ($1200 with the GoPro). In other words this is not the best bang for your bucks, nothing dramatic but there is much better on the market. Just GoPro first shot at it. Perhaps after the recent recall, GoPro fixed some issue, we'll see... - Phantom 3 : the Phantom 3 Pro films in 4K, the P3 Standard only in 1080. DJI recently stopped selling this drone but there is a lot of inventory and you can still buy a brand new unit for cheap. The IQ is enough for most internet stuff however the max bitrate at 60mbps is a little bit weak especially if you shoot in 4k. - Phantom 4 and Phantom 4 PRO: the Phantom 4 is just an updated Phantom 3 with front sensor (collision avoidance). Nothing very different on the IQ compared to the P3Pro However the Phantom 4 PRO has a much larger sensor (one inch) so better DR, ISO and quality overall. The bitrate also max out at 100mbps which is good especially with the h265 codec (but a pain to edit right now), you can still record in h264 at 100mbps. It also does 4k60. It's the most expensive one ($1500) - Mavic: nice and small portable drone, ok price at $1000 but hard to find at the moment (sold out). Offers collision avoidance (front) like the Phantom 4 and 4 Pro. On the con side the drone is a bit too light for windy days (jello and vibration issue) and the bitrate is back to 60mbps. - A note about the focal (FF equivalent): the Phantom 3 Pro and P4 are 20mm, the Phantom 4 Pro is 24mm and the Mavic is 28mm. Keep that in mind depending of what you want to do. - Other drones ? The Yuneec and Walkera make ok drones but DJI products are just better - Is is hard to fly? not really, these drones are full of automation, the flight is assisted by GPS, they will come back to the landing point if you press a button (RTH), they will also calculate your distance Vs battery and start flying back if the battery is too low based on the distance. Some have collision avoidance system. If you are a bit tech friendly and played video game in your life you won't have any issues. To give you and idea, once you start the drone and take off, the thing will stay in the air and hoover by itself until you move the command. It won't drift thanks to the GPS. Can't be easier than that ! Conclusion: You could start with a Phantom 3 standard (1080 max) or P3Pro for $500-800 new or even find cheaper used unit (check the hundreds available on Craigslist and ebay). The IQ is good enough for most internet stuff (similar to gopro), you won't break the bank and/or cry too hard if you crash. The Phantom 4, 4 Pro and Mavic have the front sensor for collision avoidance if you are a noob. Basically the drone will stop automatically on front of an obstacle. The Phantom 4 Pro is definitely a step up in term of image quality but also the more expensive. Last thing, if you buy a drone here is what YOU MUST do and understand before flying: 1. compass calibration, 2. IMU calibration, 3. return to home (set the correct altitude), 4. difference between the flight mode (ATTI and GPS). Check the thousand of tutorial available on internet. Nothing complicated but ignoring these simple things will lead to crash. Be smart, not like Casey Neistat. Here is what I did with a Phantom 3 Pro a few years ago. Fair enough

Exactly, if you take a look of the supported camera they haven't released any solid firmware for years now. http://builds.magiclantern.fm/ The most recent one are the 5Dmk3 and 700D... With Canon being so behind now, especially with the 5D4, I think the dev team decided to move on and focus on more interesting projects instead of trying to rescue crippled camera from the 90s. I'm still using the 6D and 5D3 here. Going to buy the GH5 and waiting for the next generation of Sony A7.
-
Thanks for your response guys.

Hi, with the GH5 coming I'm looking into buying an external recorder. After some research there's only a few options for 4k60 and they are very pricey (around $2k for the Shogun Inferno, Q7+). The BlackMagic Video assist seems nice but doesn't do 4k60. Also, Ideally I'd like to keep it small (5" instead of 7"). Beyond that, what is your experience with the various brand (Atomos, BlackMagic, Convergent, etc.) ? Any Pro and Cons ? Thanks in advance for your support.

I said "if the source is right" because right now we got some information here and there from various media or people who got the info by some rep somewhere, etc. Plus the article mentions "those lenses will get a firmware update at some point". So I'll just wait and see until we have solid conformation from Panasonic.
-
If the source is right: "The new 12-35mm F2.8 II ASPH. POWER O.I.S. and 35-100mm F2.8 II POWER O.I.S. now have a black finish. They also have new iris mechanisms that are supposed to give smoother aperture transitions when shooting video. One bit of good news for owners of the existing versions of the 12-35 and 35-100 is that those lenses will get a firmware update at some point to make them work with the Dual I.S. 2 system."

Thanks for your feedback, as I said I wanted to get a cool mood but I checked on another monitor and I also noticed the Magenta cast. My new monitor needs to be calibrated, I ordered a screen calibration tool (ColorMunki). Should solve this problem.
-
Here is mine. Usual Caveat, I'm not a Pro Colorist. I tried to do something balanced being light on the curve and contrast because I don't like the usual crushed black look. In terms of mood I decided to keep it on the cool side that fit the humid/snowy Seattle scene. Constructive critics and tips are welcome. If I did something wrong, please tell me how to fix it. Thanks

At 5:43 he says "only some lenses work with Dual IS". By some lenses he means the new one. All the other lenses, old Lumix and vintage such as Canon FD will work with the IBS otherwise it wouldn't make any sense.
-
I'm not a Codec expert but what do you think about that ? https://suggestionofmotion.com/blog/panasonic-gh4-setup-compression-methods/ Basically, 400mbps in All-i may not be better than 150mbps in IPB because All-I is a less efficient codec. It would just help for editing by being less intensive for the computer.
-
Thanks !
-
Yes I did. Must be something with Premiere, waiting for the future update. I shouldn't have issue to play this on my computer even with a little bit of grading. Anyway, thanks again for the files, very cool. Cheers.
-
Thanks a lot Neumann. I tried the files in Premiere and they grade beautifully however it makes Pr very slow and unresponsive sometime despite my beast computer. Also, the 60fps footage looks accelerated, especially they one with the girl in the snow.

From the DPR comment section to one of the reader asking if it has H265. Response from DPR: (Dale Baskin): Apparently the camera does employ H.265 for the 6K photo mode, but not for straight video recording.
-
4k 10bits 422 at 150mbps.... Let's see the first grading reviews. Any indication regarding 4k60p in 10bits at 400mbps with external recorder. Will this be available ? Thanks

Why not ? Unfortunately I did everything ! (well except for the International Space Station timelapse, image courtesy of NASA).

Very good machine but a few remarks just for the sake of it: Corsair Carbide Series 330R Blackout Edition Ultra-Silent Mid-Tower Case. >>> The fractal Design R5 is also very good and easy to setup Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB (4x16GB) DDR4 3466 (PC4-27700) C16 with Airflow, Black CMK64GX4M4B3466C1. >>> Enormous Heat-sink on RAM are useless except for marketing purpose. High frequency also has very little impact in real life even if the gains are visible in the benchmarks. A basic Kingston or Crucial DDR4 2400 will do the job. Samsung 2TB 960 PRO M.2 Internal SSD (fastest drive available (~3.5GB/s), for OS, Apps, temp projects). >>> Given this beast computer I would get 2 SSD, one for the system (windows) and one for the hot files currently in the timeline WD 4TB Black 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal HDD (long term storage for video projects). >>> I got 2 similar HD but in RAID 1 since they are my dump area waiting for another round of saving. EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 P2 1000W Power Supply (higher quality PSU's increase component life and reliability). EVGA is good brand but 1000W is a complete overkill. 650W would have been is plenty already for this machine unless you plan on doing SLI later on. PS: yeah, the new CC 2017 is buggy during rendering with Lumetri and many export tend to crash. If that happens I found that exporting with AME and selecting the Mercury/Software/CPU option instead of the GPU solves the issue (might take longer to render though)

Hi Guys, Happy new years to all of you. Long life to EOSHD and I'm looking forward to another round of heated discussions with complete strangers in 2017 Here is my best of 2016
