I am not finding it noisy on the A6300. I am exposing over 1.5 to 2 stops. Also, in Premier I am using the Brightness & Contrast video effect and I turn up the contrast up to 50 (from the default which is zero) and that is my decoding "LUT" rather that using the S-Log 2 LUT. Then I adjust the brightness if it look too hot to bring down the highlights. If I do have to lower the brightness (to save the highlights) then I add the Lumetri color correction video effect BEFORE the brightness and contrast video effect (or you will not be able to bring the shadows back after crushing them with contrast) and raise the black level first and then the shadows to uncrush the blacks. That said, increasing the contrast in the brightness and contrast video effect in Premier is also increasing the saturation and reducing brightness (when using the ProcAmp video effect that treats contrast and saturation separately - they both have to be turned up in equal amounts (to 200) and turning the ProcAmp brightness down to -50 to have the same effect as turning up the contrast up to 50 in the Brightness & Contrast video effect), so if you are trying to dial in your external monitor, depending on how your external monitor handles saturation and brightness when you increase contrast, you may have to increase saturation as well as contrast and decrease the brightness to get an image that looks color corrected. Theoretically, if your monitor has a broad enough range for its contrast, saturation and brightness settings, you should be able to "decode" The Sony Profile without a LUT.

@DaveAltizer - Loving it as as well. Seems like we are seeing the maximum quality 8 bit 4:2:0 can give with an 11bit equivalent log file. It not only grades easy, but does not seem to fall apart like S-Log with standard settings. I really appreciate you sharing this profile - Thank you!

I've used a Zomei HD Variable Density and I liked it. They come in 82mm. I would get the one with SCHOTT Glass from Germany that is 18-Layer multi-coated. The SCHOTT Glass and/or their coatings adds some clarity to the image that the Variable ND's seems to take away, so it tends to be a good combination from my experience. It's about $70 on ebay. I don't know if I'm allowed to provide a link, so, if your interested, just search ebay for: Zomei 82mm Ultra Slim Multi-Coated 18 layers HD ND2-400 Fader Variable ND Filter. Anyways, it's relatively cheap and does a good job IMO. (I am not affiliated with the ebay sellers of these or Zomei.)

The TV-Z lens I have is c-mount so I believe it is from a different series than what you have - even though they share the same markings. I located some TV-Z lens on eBay and they are typically B4 lenses which are cloudy wide open at the wide end unless you are shooting through a prism to a 3 chip sensor block. There are optical adapters to fix the coma issue, but they are expensive or require you to purchase a black magic pl mount camera and black magic b4 (optical) adapter. It would be worth adapting an HD broadcast lens to a black magic camera if you want the type of control a broadcast zoom lens offers and are OK with 1080p unless the lens you have has the 2x extender on it that will allow for a larger imager circle as the expense of some image quality.

I have a Fujinon-TV Z 16-160 f1.8 - I tried it my BMCC with my thinest M4/3 mount and it was almost able to get to infinity, but not quite. Mine was not cloudy. There is the question of whether it was designed to go through a prism so will it have coma and haze wide open and that did not seem to be the case with my example, unlike with my B-4 lens which are cloudy wide open (without the 2x extender and stopped down a bit). Does it clear up when stopped down?

I just cancelled my order for an Alexa as it is clearly to heavy for the Nebula 4200 I was planning to use it on. That said I will buy 87 x GX80/85's for the same $70k the Alexa was worth and call it a day. http://petapixel.com/2016/06/06/guy-smashes-70000-camera-showing-off-stabilizer/

If you have video graphics card that can store a LUT or are on a modern Mac you can use Xrite ColorMonkey to calibrate your monitor, which in my case made a great monitor much more accurate. That said nothing wrong with checking it on a TV style LED monitor to see if the calibarated monitor translates. Part of the calibration is to compensate for ambient light which can signifcantly change the perception of the image. I like checking it on my Mac Book Pro as well, as a second reference. I am editing and color correcting on PC and doing the audio on Mac in Pro Tools or Reaper.

Beautiful video. Somehow I feel like her acting was meant exclusively for the person behind the camera and not for a general audience. If this not the case, then she is an unbelievably believable actress. Either way, I appreciate your work.

Great idea. I think one important step is to have some footage with a color checker chart so that you fist get rid of any color cast. I could never get the NX1 to have a color balance I was happy when tweaking it on my own with 3D lit creator and then using the color checker chart, that all changed.

There are lots of reasons not to purchase this camera, but imho image is not one of them. That said I am not using S-Log as I am shooting indoors, so to me the color looks good. I have shot with the NX1, BMCC and the A6300 at work. The video from the a6300 looks nearly as good as either of them and better under challenging lighting conditions. It took half the time with the shoot because I did not have use as much light with the A6300, the in camera audio sounded better than the NX1 so audio post was quicker and the resolution was better than the BMCC so I could pan and zoom in post. The codec is solid and was easy to edit. All and all it is not as professional or reliable as the other two cameras, but it's easier to get a great image quickly and that is worth a few work-a-rounds because of the time it saves me. To me the a6300 is a stop gap measure until Sony releases a an APSC sensor camera body with touch screen and in body image stabilization, and hopefully less of a pention to over heat. Until then I will keep reaching for the a6300 and few extra batteries.

I love the a6300 image quality. The low light is fantastic and so is the noise structure as it cleans up well. Colors seem good to great in non-log mode. Dynamic range is outstanding. The image is beyond my expectation and so is the auto focus. The viewfinder glass on mine is a little blurry on the edges of the screen. With an external preamp turned up and the internal recording level turn down, but still getting a good recording level, the sound quality is good. Using my external monitor, I am able to monitor audio via HDMI with the headphone jack on my monitor. Using the HDMI monitor also turns off the LCD screen on the camera when recording. Re: overheating - things to try: 1. Pull the LCD away from the body. 2. Open the battery door. 3. Put it in airplane mode so the internal wifi does not cause heat. 4. Power it off USB. 5. Swap batteries every 30 minutes with a fresh cold battery. 6. Add an aluminum cage that acts as a heat sink. 7. Add a fan. 8. Other ideas - dummy battery powered by external USB. Third party battery grip. Anyone could try 1-4. 5 is reasonable on a real shoot. If your gonna do 1-5, doing number 6 makes since as well. I would prefer not using a fan, but if I have to, on a hot day, I would.

I would recommend it if you like high dynamic range and great low light performance - if it doesn't overheat. The nice thing about it is the codec doen't seem to get mushy in low light. I will never go back to ISO 1600 as the maxinum like on the black magics or the usable top ISO if the NX1. It's so nice to be able to shoot in room light and add a single high CRI led light panel to complete the shot. Also, with a good preamp feeding it you can turn down the audio record level and get a usable audio track. Finally, the color seems fine when shooting with no picture profile and having a high resolution 4K image provides lots of flexibility in post for panning and scanning. That said I was holding my breath today, hoping it would not overheat and left the battery door open. It did not overheat today, but it had in the past on a longer take with the battery door closed. Great image when not overheating. -
The sensor is 4K but it only records 1080p... looks like there will be V2 that records 4K. If this recorded 4K it would be interesting, but 1080p from Canon leaves something to be desired resolution wise. Maybe this will be better with it 4 to 1 pixel scaling. Might be fantastic... we'll see.

Here's a video that compares the dynamic range LS300 against some "affordable" cameras. Don't know if I would call the FS5 affordable, but still interesting to see the dynamic of this camera in JLog. I'm impressed with what this camera can do. Yes, this guy tried to match the cameras as best he could, which might not be the someone else would have done the comparison, but still worth looking at as a data point.

This is exciting but it's not something I would purchase for the same reason I will not purchase the G7. I would like to record internal 4k and monitor via HDMI. If the GX85 allows HDMI monitoring while recording 4K internally, then I will consider purchasing, especially if it does as well as the G7 at high ISOs.

Hi, I was looking for info on what Sony may be releasing on sonyalpharumors.com and I saw that best buy was selling an open box for the A6300 with 16-50PZ lens for $988 with free shipping on ebay. I figured I would try one at this price. Here's a link to it on Ebay. I'm not affiliated with best buy, sony alpha rumors or ebay. Here's what I like about the a6300 image and AF performance vs the NX1. My apologies if this has been posted before. If Sony or a third party solution can solve the over heating, then I'm sold, as I already know, which image I would rather have at the end of the shoot. Is it just me or does it feel like Sony is holding back on releasing a sensor stabilized version of this sensor, until they suck up all the pent up demand at this price point and then are they are going drop the camera I really want for a hundered more. It's bound to happen (who knows when) as there is definitely market demand for a slightly improved version of this with IBS and headphone jack etc. Come on Sony - take my money - stop holding out on us to maximize corporate profits. That said, Sony: great job on finally nailing the codec and AF - it's hard to ignore where this headed. -
Here's a clip the include both the A6300 and the NX1. Not the greatest example because it looks like the saturation and contrast are not turned down on the NX1. I did not shoot it. Looking at crop fact, rolling shutter, ergonomics, battery life and over heating the NX1 wins. Looking at the picture I see in the video above I like the A6300 better.

Hi, Can anyone confirm if 25p 4K is cropped or not and if so, is the rolling shutter improved over 24P? Does anyone know the rolling shutter number for 30p 4k? Finally, is the camera switchable from NTSC to PAL and vice versa? Thanks!

I wonder if BM is waiting until April 18th (NAB Exhibits open), to release an updated specification and then ship it. Would be nice to have global shutter at 60p with no loss of DR (I know I'm dreaming). I would like to see a BM Micro with 4k internal and global shutter for $1500 or less with the same physically layout. Maybe it would have to record to CF cards and be slightly larger. Come on Blackmagic, ship this by the first day of NAB 2016.

For me it's about confidence. How do I gain the confidence in my ability to communicate the story I want to tell with my target audience. Do I spend $5k (again and again) on a camera and lenses and learn how to use them? Do I take classes at the locate community college and learn how to tell a story despite the limits of available equipment. Do I pay some to shoot my story for me and learn by watching what they do and asking questions. Do I write a script, rent a complete system, lights, camera and lenses, and only shot when I have something worthy of investing in? So I went the "spend the money on the camera" route and tried to learn how to use it and it did not work out how I hoped it would. First I purchased an GH1 and hacked it, and purchased c-mount lens, thought I could do better so I purchased I BMPCC to used the same lenses, and used home depot lights with mixed results - I really needed to purchase an external monitor. Then I purchased an NX1 and small led light panel and external monitor, and it looked better, but still was not exactly what I was hoping for. Now I'm on a BMCC and I have even more lights and it looks good (enough) when RS is not messing with panning, bottom line is it still has limitations the I would like to move beyond. Even though I can see the gaps in my current setup ( I realize I could use a better tripod and larger High CRI LED light panels). What I really want is to be able to do is use minimal lights (have low noise, high ISO capability), have low or no rolling shutter, the ability to shoot handheld so stabilized lenses and/orI IBS sensor with great autofocus, oh and don't forget the high dynamic range. So I keep hoping there will be a "messiah" camera that will allow me to do all of the above - it will probably be the A7RIII with 4D auto focus and minimal rolling shutter with full screen read out in 4K. Who knows. it will probably have other issuess I would like to avoid like 8 bti space making me want to wait for the next next generation. Anyways, I would rather buy a new camera body than more lights - go figure - I guess, currently you can't have it all (for my budget) so I will confidently make do with what I have - after I add some more light and a tripod.

I would welcome the 2.3x crop at 24p (as an option) as well. So depending on rolling shutter - this will be my next camera body addition. Really excited to see Andrew get his hands on one and give us one of his no-non-sense reviews. For the person purchasing a video capture system the a6300 and the Sony 18-105 pz will be the a strong contender at retail vs the other options which includes a 16-50 kit lens. I would choose this combination if I needed auto focus in video, power zoom, constant aperture, image stabilization, internal 4k, high ISO, S-Log2/3, high res viewfinder, mic input. Hopefully it won't have any major flaws at launch.
