The Dell P2715Q 27" Ultra HD 4K Monitor is a nice monitor. 99% RGB, 10 bit IPS panel with a matte finish screen. I got one on eBay for $375 used as they have been out a while. They sell for about $499 new. Anyways, I am very happy with the way it reproduces color. 27" is a little small for reading the text in Resolve when running the monitor at 4k - doable but not always easy especially at the end of an editing session. With Premier it was easier to read the menus. If you can get a 30" with the features you want for your budget, I would stronghly consider it.

Thanks Andrew! I had forgotten about this, though I now remember seeing it before. In your example, I would pick the BMCC as it has a little more dynamic range, where in Mattias' example I would pick the Digital Bolex for color and motion cadence. So each individual sensor and sensors type has it's advantages, or so it seems.
-
Thanks for share this excellent just for fun shootout. I was wondering it the difference in color rendition between the BMPCC and Digital Bolex is due mostly to the CMOS vs CCD or ProRes vs Raw? Maybe a little of both I imagine...
-
I've had the BMPCC and it could get great results with good lighting and mostly not great otherwise. If you don't need to have an electronic connection to a micro 4/3 lens, I would spend a bit more and get a used BMCC with the 4/3 mount, if you could find one for a good price, with the Studio version of Resolve. I know the BMCC is big and heavy, won't fly on a drone or play nicely on a gimbal, but if your lenses works with it, being able to shoot wider with a little bit more DR and at a little higher resolution than the BMPCC, makes me happy. The LCD on the BMPCC is not very useful IMHO, I find the LCD on the BMCC much easier to use, if need be, so an external LCD monitor should be factored into the price of the BMPCC. Anyway, if they are within the price of buying Resolve Studio used separately, I would get the BMCC the used with Resolve Studio, or should I say that's what I did rather than a buy a BMPCC (again), GH4 or (a second) NX1.
-
I'm fine with good 1080P as a delivery size. I like to pan, zoom and stabilize with 4k NX1 footage - the extra resolution is a plus when editing. The BMCC has so much going for it when it come to DR, color and short flange distance with the M43 mount, and if the person you purchase from includes the Resolve dongle, having the noise reduction as a part of Resolve is a plus when it comes to playing well with my CPU/GPU.

Here's what I posted on PV about the same fotage: For a company that relies on preorders and direct sales as their sales model this type of slick polished video makes since. For others it is less/not important as they have a strong channel the will help sell their new product offering. Personally, I don't trust these prerelease videos as representative of the way I shoot or post process. I do trust the community at large to show what the camera can do in the hands of the every man with the common tools and work flows I have access to. My main discision making tool is the comparison videos after the product is released. I'm not Red's target audience because I'm not a Red believer who buys on spec and slick promo videos. That said, if it is truly a better product solution (including post processing requirements) and a reasonable value as compared to the competition, I am all in (once it is vetted by the community). I am not the droid Red is looking for...

The next level for me regarding coloring a shot is using 3D LUT Creator to make custom LUTs to use in Resolve. At first I was wondering it would be as simple as capturing a still of the frame in Resolve ( right click on the frame in the color tab In Resolve and then export as a tiff file), open in 3D LUT creator, tweak it, then save a cube LUT in Resolve's LUT folders (then update and save the list in the color management preference.) It was that easy and it worked great! I'm using the NX1 and this has allowed me make adjustments to shots that needed to be "saved" as the were not short right in the first place. I needed to create my own LUTs when I did not shoot a color chart to have Resolve do a color match. The second reason I like creating my own LUTs is creative control and creating my on look on the shot. I was skeptical that it would really do more the Resolve can with adjusting hue vs hue and hue vs saturation and it really does give you more control and potentially better results. That said, if you lit, exposed and shot for scene well in the first place and had a color chart for Resolve to match you probably don't need to make your own 3D LUTs. Similar to the phrase "don't try this at home". Don't try this without getting a monitor that has faithful color rendition in the first place. I am using a Dell P2715Q monitor (with the multimedia preset) and I can finally see what I and doing when coloring. Step 1 buy an x-rite color checker and use it on every shot (if you can). Step 2 buy a monitor with 99% RGB Step 3 learn how to use Resolve to its fullest, Step 4 consider 3D LUT creator if you want even more creative coloring control or need to fix shot that were no shot right in the first place. Step 5 have fun color correcting because you can finally see what you are doing and have the tools to make the most of coloring any shot.

I'm using Pro DAD Mercalli V4 to convert (and stabilize) 0-256 color space NX1 H265 footage . Currently $99 with this coupon code MV4-99 for Cyber Monday ends to day (the 30 of Nov at www.prodrenalin.com) it's normally $299. (I have no affiliation with Pro DAD...) I am waiting for Adobe to come out with native support as well. If edit H265 in Premier how do I color correct in Resolve 12? Normally convert to ProRes and then edit and CC in Resolve.

As NX1 owner - I've often considered the NX500 as a second camera. Top things that have held me back are: no DIS for video. significant crop in 4k. Of less concern but still present: no EVF, no mic jack, no peaking in 4k. Things that are differences, but are not of concern to me are no Gamma DR, 70 MB/srather than 100 as the recording size. Advantages I appreciate are lighter weight and selfie screen LCD position option. To me if the used or sale price is within $500 difference I would go for the NX1 - which will be the case in the future, I predict.

If you have a fast PC with a video card with lots or CUDA cores, PAVTUBE video converter is GPU accelerated, which can be very fast for converting NX1 H265 files. Also, it allows adjustment of contrast, brightness and saturation, so if you are shooting 0-256 luminance you can get push the image around while transcoding and to preserve as much information as possible. Regarding dynamic range - I try to keep it ISO 400 or under, the closer to 100 ISO the better if you plan to do a lot of grading in post. If you plan on lighting your scene, the NX1 produces a fantastic image. Or you can spend serval hundred dollars more and get an A7s, if low light is your thing.

Thanks Zak - Great price with the coupon - ordered it! What are people doing for a gray card as the coupon did not work with the version that comes with gray card?

I'm thinking they will go 28MP BSI sensor. If you take 1.5 of 42MP you get 28MP - so Samsung got it right and Sony has already followed so to speak with the A7RII pixel density. That said the e-mount flange distance is an advantage over the NX mount so I will be getting one of these A7000s as soon as it's available - hopefully before CES, no one but Sony knows when.

New EOSHD setup guide gives Samsung NX1 LOG capability and more
majoraxis replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
"DaVinci Resolve is not required, the workflow is geared towards Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro X!" Hi Andrew, How well does the input work with Resolve? Will it provide equally satisfactory results using the input and output LUT with Resolve? BTW: I transcode with Photo by Brightland on the PC from 4k to 1080 10 bit 444 Pro Res as it has excellent color interpolation from 420 to 444. Worth trying if anyone wants to edit in 1080p. Thanks! Fantastic footage - thanks for sharing it! With the lens you list, are you shooting mostly in FF mode or do you find them as useful in S35 mode as well? Thanks, Mark
-
@ Davide - thanks for the great testing and commentary! If you could test the Clear Image Zoom in S35 mode and let us know how much it zooms in and what happens to the image quality when it is zoomed in, that would be appreciated! Thanks, Mark

I read on PV that the NX500 does not have focus peaking a in 4k mode - does anyone know if that is that still the case? Does anyone know what is is the native luma range is (as Andrew said there is no setting option?) Does anyone know if the NX500's HDMI outputs a signal when recording 4k and if so is what the resolution is and if it is clean? Thanks!

Another vote for Schott Glass Variable ND filters... I purchased one by Zomei which was 18 layer multi-coated ultra slim etc. Works will with little color shift of the NX1. They also make a 82mm version in case you need something larger. I've also had a Schott glass UV filter by the same company and that made the image slightly harder / more intense looking but it may have been the coatings etc and not the Schott glass, but for Variable ND Schott glass is plus as far as I can see.

There are only 4 must haves for me in a camera body: 1. Internal 4k 2. APS-C size sensor or equlivant with a speed booster. 3. Log recording 4. Affordable price The A7RII get's 3 out of 4 right. I am hoping Samsung adds Log. Same with Panasonic. I am also hoping that the Sony A6100/7000 will complete the list for under $1000. The flood gates are open and by the end of the year there will be a lot happy aspiring film makers with hybrid internal-4k-log film making monsters under the tree.

Thanks for sharing this! The question it answers for me is how to spend my shooting budget. My thought is to spend it on lights and sound before spending it on renting or purchasing a lens that cost 5 times as much. Now, if you have the choice of lens with similar prices, then pick the one with the features that will preform under the shooting condition you anticipate.

Great video Pavel - thanks putting this together for the Samsung engineers to review.
