  1. Handling with the Canons is great. They are quick to get up to speed and get the shot. I think this new camera has a place... not something I’m personally buying into. I want something with 1DXMK2 levels of performance with a modern video codec.
  2. Having real filters does not prevent you from adding effects in post. I personally use both. I think it's better when you can capture the look you want in camera. If you dig deep enough you can find pros and cons to everything. Personally, I like the reflections that can bounce off the filters. Granted, if it doesn't look right you may have to control the scene by moving lights, adding flags or moving the angle of the camera. To me it all part of the process. These days I try to capture as close to the finished result in camera. That said, I understand everyone has a different taste, and different ways of working. In the end you do what works for you.
  3. Seems to be a big improvement over the version .6 firmware test. We will know for sure when the final production models come out. Overall I think it's an interesting camera, but I'm taking a wait and see approach until more reviews are in.
  4. Yes... sad but true. The GH4 and then later the 5 sort of gave hope that perhaps Panasonic wasn't going to play those games. But now it appears that the real money maker they are protecting might be the GH5/S... and saving the real goods for the upcoming GH6. I think it's possible the real progress will come from Fuji. Their upcoming XH2 and Medium format monster look to be very interesting. Imagine 4k downsampled from a medium format sensor ?Fuji claims the upcoming GFX100S will do just that. Plus, I am certain these two top tier models will be manufactured in Japan... so build will likely be much better. I like the Fuji lenses also. Nikon also seems determined to be counted as a force in the mirrorless hybrid world also. I would bet good money their upcoming offerings will be serious contenders.
  5. It might remain... but not in 4k. I think the "Pro" model will be the one that checks most of the boxes. It would be nice to have a mirrorless 1DXMK3 with a edit friendly codec.
  6. I'll hold out optimism for the "Pro" version. Hopefully, that will have Canon's new back lit sensor tech with DPAF.... we can dream can't we? Read the title of the thread ?
  7. That's why you need to use the French flags to control the light... or perhaps a lens hood? There is some technique to using the filter.
  8. I'm not sure why everyone is certain it will have 4k? The 6DMk2 doesn't. It would seem this camera is being pitched as a stills camera, not a hybrid.
  9. I enjoy using the Magic Bullet diffusion filters also. They can add some nice character to the imagery. That said, I wouldn’t consider them a replacement for the real McCoy. I sort of don’t understand this thread. Why not just use a real BPM? That’s what they do in Hollywood. They are not that expensive. And if you need to go with a set for your matte box, they are readily available used on eBay, if the new cost is prohibitive.
  10. I’m certainly not pro 4K crop. Of course I would prefer no crop. But that said all things are not equal. For whatever reason the Canon produces a more filmic/organic image that it’s contemporaries regardless of crop. Let me put it this way... if there was another mirrorless full frame Canon with 10 Bit output, DPAF in 4K, 30MP + sensor, flippy screen and no crop in 4K... I would be all over that. But that is not yet available. With the introduction of the S1, the above scenario is a reality within the Panasonic lineup. So it would seem the argument for purchasing the GH5/S is diminished. Especially when the body is near to the same price. The problem is Panasonic seems to have kept some of the weaknesses of the GH5 and removed some of the strengths when creating the S-line. I cannot understand why they didn’t just pull out all the stops.
  11. Have you noticed anything that would deter you from using legacy glass on the R mount? Honestly of the lenses I own the difference is near enough as makes no difference.
  12. We can both agree that most if not all of the features of today's M43 sensors will one day come to Full Frame... but the reverse is not true... and likely never will be.
  13. In all honesty I think any difference is imperceivable. The magic happens in the body, not the lens. The adapted lenses work as well as the native glass. If I need a shallower DOF or want a wider angle, I do not hesitate to switch to an adapted lens. Their use is seamless.
  14. I think you are confusing focusing systems. "Contrast detect" hunts; moving past the point of focus and returning in order to establish sharp focus. DPAF does not hunt... regardless of which lens is used. I frequently use my 24-70mm F2.8, 16-35mm F4 and even my EF-S 10-18 on the EOS R... there is zero hunting. As there is also zero hunting on any other Canon bodies that I have used it on... C200 and 1DXMK2 to name a few. If the body support DPAF there is no hunting. I'm curious... have you used this camera? Now a case could be made regarding noise... not on the lenses I have previously mentioned. But if using in-camera mics, the 50mm F1.2 does make a noticeable sound when tracking focus. If recording audio externally, well it's a non-issue.
  15. The S1 is cheaper than just the GH5S with SB... which goes back to my original point... M43 is a tough sell with all the new mirrorless cameras that are out/coming out with larger sensors for similar, and in some cases less money. The Nikon Z6 is under $2k... as is the Sony A73. The Canon EOS R is right at the same $$$ as a GH5S body only. I've owned all of these cameras... I think I miss the Nikon most, but feel comfortable with my choice. The GH5S was a big step up in terms of low-light when compared to the GH5, but their full frame contemporaries IMO have an edge. If the price is near enough to the same, I just cannot see a reason to opt for M43. That might change with the GH6... but any advantages could quickly swing back in favor of the FF options once the Sony A7S3 is released.
  16. All other things being equal... yes... and if I am wrong, just use your smartphone and be done with it. I'm no pro... let me get that straight. But I've had plenty of experience with M43. If size and weight are not part of the equations... please tell me, what would be the appeal of M43 vs APSC? Or Full Frame? Certainly in the case of the GH5S, there is no cost saving. So the advantage is... what? There is no case to be made... APSC is the new M43. Granted the GH6 might be awesome... but if it is not substantially better than the XH2... I think Panasonic will need to rethink things. As for BMD... if you can call having customers wait for over a year for their product a good way to run a business, well lets just say I think we have different levels of expectations.
  17. Well I think most of us measure quantity/volume of light or light transmission in T-Stops, and to a less accurate degree F-Stops... what do you measure quality of light in? Squirrels? Sorry, I just can't bother... I'm just gonna assume you are joking. Have fun shooting.
  18. Is this a trick question? Since... FOREVER! As an extreme example... ever shoot with a smartphone? Ever shoot with a 4 x 5 camera? Photography is ALL about capturing light. And Cinema is moving Pictures.
  19. Yeah, my experience with the X-T3 was not great reliability wise; so I'm with you here. Also, I will confirm that Canon, Nikon and Panasonic have alway been very dependable in my experience. I would trust any of those three with a serious project. The S-line looks good, but falls short in important areas. I wish Panasonic would have pulled out all the stops. I hate to say it, but I think for real breakthroughs we now have to look to Nikon and Fuji. Neither of them has anything to gain by holding back on the video front. That said, Canon makes do with inferior specs, while still producing a more pleasing image. I'm not sure how they manage it? The "silly" argument, is the idea that a larger lens somehow lets in no more light than a smaller lens. It's deceptive because the case is made by stating, "F2.8 lens lets in the same amount of light per sensor area". Well naturally, if you are talking about the same sensor area, of course the amount of light is equal. F2.8 is still F2.8, regardless of sensor... However, we are not talking about the same sensor area. Full frame is 4X more sensor area than M43. So the overall amount of light is of course more. When shooting downsampled video, where the entire sensor is utilized, there is a distinct advantage in overall volume of light with a full frame sensor. I get a bit tired of people trying to obfuscate this simple truth. This area is a point of confusing for many noobs. So I prefer to speak a bit more plainly, for the sake of clarity.
  20. So to my point, overall volume of light is less on M43. And if you are downsampling or shooting high res stills the difference is real. Also, clearly size and weight advantages are things you yourself have admitted may need to be sacrificed for certain shots. So in practice you just end up carrying even more lenses... and having to switch between SB and native... occasionally forgetting that the SB is attached between lens switches... been there... done that. These silly arguments might make sense for someone who has never shot with M43, but frankly I've shot with M43 for years. So I am fully aware of the strengths and weakness of the system. Native M43 glass always seems lacking when compared to full frame. I'm not saying good imagery cannot be produced with M43; I'm simply saying, it requires a bit more effort. It might appear strange, but I like when a camera is so easy to shoot with, it feels like cheating. That's a feeling I get with the 1DXMK2. It's just that dam good. Can't say the GH series ever instilled that level of confidence in me. Here's my concern with M43... it's becoming a harder case to make. Fuji's S35/APSC X-T3 offers better coverage... without the need for a SB, outputs 10 Bit and is $1300 bucks. If there is a size/weight cost advantage to be seen in this example, all three must go to the more affordable Fuji. There are some markets that seem to be heating up... I would say those would be Full Frame, with the release of mirrorless offerings from most of the major players... then APSC... with the runaway success of the X-T3, and lastly Medium Format... which is seeing some quite affordable offerings being released. I do not have a crystal ball, but if I were a betting man, I would not be betting on M43 to be a force moving forward. I also think Panasonic did themselves a disservice by holding back on S1/R... No flippy screen was a nail in the coffin for many would be purchasers. Poor AF for video was a terrible decision. IMO, usability trumps ultimate image quality; as the former means you actually produce content, whereas the latter means you get to please pixel peepers that spend their time blowing up frames to 400%... who watches movies like that?
  21. The new order will be: APSC, Full Frame and Medium Format. Those preferring smaller lenses will have APSC. It just makes sense. M43 sounded great, but in practice, you loose a fair amount of light with those smaller lenses... so what to do? You buy a speedbooster so you can use full frame lenses... and there goes any advantage of smaller lenses. Seriously, of those that own an M43 camera... how many of you also own a SB or are contemplating purchasing one? That’s an excellent example of management that has zero idea how to run a business. This is why startups often replace the original founders with professional management once business picks up. BMD is a joke of a company. In contrast, look at Atomos... the Ninja V is a pretty popular accessory... you can buy them at all the usual places and get one in hand today.
  22. Yes, no mention... unless you have the presence of mind to actually bother to read the comments, where a viewer asked the question... "Were these shots in HD or 4k?" and the person who created the video answered, saying, "4K". But go ahead and live in that world where the rolling shutter on this camera is sooooo bad that it will ruin all shots that involve any movement. And as for your suggestions... done that... guess what... NOT AN ISSUE. For the record... IBIS helps with micro jitters, but if you plan to walk around you would be better served with a gimbal.
  23. I will agree on that front. Full frame is to a large extent... overrated. However, it does have benefits when shooting in low light conditions. I think it's nice to have the options anyway. On a positive note, it's clear what Panasonic need to do to take the lead. Fix AF and add that dam flippy screen. If they do those two things, the S-Line will have more than a fighting chance. Like I said, the image out of the camera looks good and low-light is pretty amazing. Oh one last thing.... the system needs to be less costly... the price of admission is too high for what it is.
  24. @Towd I still believe the end days of M43 are drawing nearer. Look at Olympus's latest entry. Also the GH line will seemingly be taking a back seat to the newer S-line. At least it should given that the new S-line is Panasonics new flagship.
