Nikon Z6 features 4K N-LOG, 10bit HDMI output and 120fps 1080p
DBounce replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I'm calling BS on prores raw... I have an Z6, and it's great in many ways. But there are things that need to be fixed.... the AF in low-light, the AF in NLog and hey, internal NLog would be great. Honestly, if Prores Raw actually bought anything worthwhile to the table; I would be all over it, but I suspect it is nothing more than hype. However, since we are posting videos... -

Yeah, this looks impressive... until you realize he was not actually recovering lost information from an overexposed shot, but rather just undoing the processing that FCPX did to the footage when he imported it. Let me ask you this... if you shot stills in raw @14bit, and they were that overexposed... do you believe you would be able to recover that much detail? Of course not. This video is a excellent example of a YouTuber misleading by not fully understanding color space and the processing that it being applied. -

I recall seeing some test that seemed to suggest that Prores Raw was no better than regular prores. What's the verdict? Is this really a big step up from log, or just hype? Does this mean the AF issues will be resolved when recording externally? It all seems rather compelling. -
Today I had a go at matching the Canon EOS R and Nikon Z6 to the Canon C200. I shot the EOS R in C-Log at FHD, UHD and UHD with the 10-18mm F4.5-5.6 EF-S lens. The Nikon Z6 was shot in UHD mode with a flat picture profile; whilst the Canon C200 was shot in 8-Bit C-Log to the SD card. I'm no colorist, but I believe matching these cameras in post in possible. Please let me know your thoughts. I think this demonstration may be useful for anyone eying up either the EOS R... or the Z6, with hopes of using them with a C200 at some point. I create these test as part of my evaluation process. I can say for me the Canon is so far easier to work with. As a mostly one man band, the great AF, in all lighting conditions, coupled with the flip out screen, makes for stress free operation. That said, the Nikon is a pretty great camera. Take a peak and post back here.

Couldn’t imagine pulling focus with any degree of accuracy while l supporting the weight of the gimbal rigged with camera. I think you’re better off with AF or a dedicated focus puller.

Congratulations, it's a fantastic camera. I'm certain you will love it. Yes low light AF is not great. But the low light high ISO performance is good. I need to shoot more with mine. -
Does it matter if it's passed internally spec wise? Will that somehow make its image worse? I'll share my thoughts on the handling shortly.

FHD has other benefits in post. Easy to edit on most computers. If delivery is YouTube their may be a case to be made for it.

I was shooting with the Nikon for a couple weeks and left it in flat as that's what I prefer them grading. It may have been best to leave it in standard. But with two cameras loaded up on the rig my arms got tied pretty quick. All settings were default on the Canon. With exception to resolution, IS and codec. I understand the crop is huge. Which is why I picked up a 10-18mm EF-S lens in addition to my 16-35mm L lens. I'm concerned more with quality. Not seeing a massive difference between UHD and FHD imo. Granted there is some, and in certain cases, that may be important... but when filming people does it matter? I'm not so sure. What are your thoughts on there other aspects of the image (crop asside)? Colors, motion, stabilization, detail, overall image quality? The Nikon nailed the focus in my VLog test. I honestly was concerned the footage would be out of focus, but without NLog enabled, the video AF is quite excellent. Better than the very good Fuji X-T3 and superior to the Sony A73. I accidentally did a low-light test of the Canon, when my shutter was mysteriously increased to 125 and F-Stop to 5 (user error im sure). While there was noise, I thought it looked very filmic. This is preferable imo to what we generally see. Today I will share my first hands on video with the EOS R. I'm still not decided. The Nikon is far better than I had expected it to be.

I'm not so sure...

Yesterday the post man delivered to my waiting hands the new Canon EOS R. Today I finally had a chance to have a quick play with it. I’m fortunate enough to also have a Nikon Z6 on hand for comparison. As I type this post I have a straight out of camera comparison doing a VLog style shoot of the Canon vs the Nikon uploading for your viewing pleasure. I tried to keep things even. Canon is set to standard picture profile. Nikon was flat with just saturation and a little constrast added. Auto ISO was kept to 6400 and below. I wanted to see the transitions as I walked to see if it was smooth. I did test with digital IS enabled and off... in both UHD and FHD. I’m a bit perplexed by the results. I starting to think that UHD is overrated. To my eyes there is little, if anything between the Z6 in 4k vs the Canon in FHD. I’d be curious to hear everyone’s input regarding this pair. Try to leave any predilections behind as you view the footage. I’m starting to feel the most hated camera on the internet is actually a sleeper. Watch this space... footage incoming shortly ??

No, NLog requires a minimum ISO of 800... The non NLog shot was at 400 ISO IIRC. It might have been a little lower. I did the test -
It will retain the setting.

Canon EOS R first impressions - INSANE split personality camera
DBounce replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
@Snowbro I get my EOS R tomorrow. I can confirm the 1DXMK2 draws a lot of attention. Almost as much as the C200. My mirrorless camera’s are far less conspicuous. I’m also hoping the trio can play nice together. When the “Pro” version is released I will buy it if all goes well with the ‘R’. -
Yes, but it’s not ideal. Let’s assume you do this indoors and then go outside... it manual aperture and iso are selected, there is no way to adjust them directly from the pocket.
-
I never do extreme grades with the 1DXMK2. I tend to bake in the colors and perform only minor tweaks in post. If you do that you will be surprised at how good the footage can be. I agree that the Fuji is more flexible in post. The codec is better, and 10 Bit is more data. It depends on how much you need to manipulate the footage. I think if you can get close in camera you are better off. That said they are both great.
-
16:9 is available with no device connected, from the touch screen. Manual options... not yet.
-
It does look good, but if it's killing your 1DXMk2, I suspect your camera is broken. Now where it does kill the 1DXMK2 is in portability, flexibility with that tilty screen... and a more modern codec etc... No doubt the Fuji can be used to create stunning images. But as many have shown... so can the 1DXMK2. For me the strengths were more about the shooting experience. The Fujis are fun to shoot. They feels retro, and that makes shooting with them a bit more special. They have a certain charm. But at this point, I don't really think any of the top contenders are "killing" their competitors. Everything is so good, that it is truly amazing that just anybody can go out and purchase them. I've used all the latest, with the exception of the Canon EOS R, which arrives tomorrow. I was not going to buy the R, but I really what to see how it fits in with my Canon C200. I also suspect its gotten in vogue to trash Canon. While I do sort of miss the Fuji. And I really miss the MK lenses... (they where so very good). Looking back at the footage, it had mojo. But, I just had so many issues with my two bodies to make them keepers. I will revisit the Fuji perhaps when their new medium format camera is released... or the XH2. But I will only buy first batch if they are made in Japan.
-
My guess is Panasonic are moving away from M43. With the cost of full frame bodies dropping and advances in APSC cameras such as the X-T3, it is hard to justify paying a premium for a m43 sized sensor in a full sized body.

Ok, all of this speculation about exposure is a bit much. Here is a quick test I just did with ample... ample light. As you can see, after a quick pan to the center of the room to find a different focus point, when I re-center the camera with my face in the scene again it cannot recognized my face. It just sits out of focus. If I am talking it still does not find me. I have included some shots from the Ninja. Trust me when I tell you, under/over or correctly exposed... with NLog enabled AF becomes unreliable. Hey folks it's your money. I'm just sharing what I have found.
