Well news of this new system coming should tank sales of their DSLRs. I can’t see any new would be Nikon users buying into the old system with the new mirrorless system less than a month away.

I have to say, I’m more excited about this camera than the BMP4K. Especially if This is the work of a collaborative effort with Samsung. Nikon has no dog in the fight where video is concerned, so this might be the camera that properly addresses that shortcoming. I bid 5000 qautloos!

Had some fun with the MoonDog Labs Anamorphic adapter this weekend. The iPhone X shows it's limitations but fun being able to work with such a light setup. Once tech catches up, this will be the future.

There are many things baked into an image when filming (composition, lighting, subject, performance etc...). While adding things in post is a great option, I lean towards the idea that the less you need do in post the better. As Tiffen BPM filters can be found pretty affordable on eBay, why not just pick up a used set? Tiffen BPM filters are still used today on many, if not most major productions. If they get thrown on Cooke, Panavision etc lenses they must be good enough to “risk” baking in. I say the bigger risk is trying to add them as an effect in post. It’s pretty easy to make an image look artificial in post. And with the subtle nature of the BPM look, it is very difficult to pull off in post... as everyone here is quickly learning. Let’s suppose you somehow manage to pull off the look on a static image... great work indeed, but how pray tell do you continue this deception once the camera moves?... You don’t... End of story!

Well to be fair, the anamorphic adapter also has the 52mm filter adapter fitted, and one or two filters attached... which is how I will shoot in the daytime. My Osmo batteries are charging so I haven’t actually turned it on. There is a counterweight attached. It feels like it’s balanced perfectly with the counterweight, although it is top heavy. It’s about equivalent to the Moment lenses that I also purchased. Though my girlfriend gets more use out of the Moment lenses. She loves them and takes them everywhere.

No, the biggest difference to playback is the speed of the hd. When I moved the files to my internal 2000 MB/s drive playback was acceptable. But connecting the eGPU yielded no perceivable performance improvements for playback.

Just got the new MoonDog Labs Anamorphic adapter for the iPhone X. Looks good so far. I’ll be playing with it over the weekend.

So after some more testing with and without the eGPU, I have concluded that render times are reduced by approximately 25%. Color me unimpressed... and disappointed. I expected more for north of $700.

I would love to see a new Razer Blade Pro with thin bezels, hdr 4K screen and option for 64GB of ram.
-
I hate to say it, but I’m going to hold off from buying the new MBP. I’m thinking there is no compelling reason to part with close to $7k when it’s likely there is no performance gain in real-world use. As for the eGPU, it’s probably going back. It might make some difference to render times, but slow render times was never my motivation for purchasing it.

Ok, just did some testing with the 1DXMk2 files. Honestly, FCPX seems to be about the same either way with these files. They play back ok on both in internal and external drive. And the eGPU makes no perceivable difference. I'm thinking my money would be better spent on a fast external M.2 drive for the C200 files. Transfer speeds make a very noticeable difference where the C200 is concerned. A fast drive would seem to offer the best bang for the buck.
-
Sure, I’ll check it out and let you know how it goes. Though my understanding is the eGPU does little for FCPX.

Well I’ve had more time to play with the eGPU and.. I’m not sure it has anything to do with the perceived performance gains. I think it’s not that the RawLite files require a lot of computational power, but rather just a lot of bandwidth to read them quickly enough for smooth playback. Yesterday I moved some footage over to my built in drive which can read at 2000/MBs and had no playback issues at all. Also no performance difference with eGPU connected or unplugged. I now believe the 2016 MBP 15” is fast enough to handle playing back these files... provided you have a fast storage solution. Rendering may be another matter, but honestly I never had an issue with rendering.

Well apart from the 240fps why not the Canon C200? The Canon route makes the choice for B (1DXMk2) and C (5DMkIV) cams easy.

Yes indeed, I plan to get a maxed out 15” once they are in stock at BH.

This is a big enough deal for Mac users that it frankly deserves it's own thread. The new BlackMagic eGPU has the potential to allow Apple's MacBook Pro to be a viable proposition for editing 4k video on a 2016 and up MBPs using Resolve. This is a pretty big deal, as even the latest 2018 MBP fails to meet the requirements to do this in and of itself. The addition of the official eGPU means plug and play easy of use, with quiet operation. Needless to say, I order one shortly after learning about it. From the reviews I have seen, it will be a game changer for those of us that have been using MBPs to edit in Resolve. Oh, about that... At no point did I envision using a MBP to edit 4k files on a MPB in DR. But after acquiring the Canon C200 I soon realized that Resolve offered more control with Canon RawLite files than did FCP. And so, I made the switch back to Resolve... and then the pain started. Editing these files on the MBP in Resolve is trying. The playback is abysmal. I estimate 15 frames per minute... Yes, it's that bad. So bad in fact that I render the timeline and then go back into Resolve to figure out where to cut by referring to the rendered footage. After a conversation with BMD, they revealed to me that working with these files would be doable with the eGPU attached. So for me, and I suspect many others in a similar position, it will be a major upgrade. So here's a question: The Radeon RX580 GPU that is inside the BMD eGPU supports HDR. So with the eGPU connected will the MBP be able to output HDR if connected to a HDR monitor?

In response to the thread title... apparently, yes!

Almost forgot to mention, the lens on the C200 is the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 II L series. The red ring came off by itself... though it may have had help from an over exuberant maid... AnyWhodles...

So I just got the DJI Ronin S and decided to try it with a couple of cameras. The cameras I have tested so far are the Panasonic GH5S and the Canon C200. The former is well suited to handheld work given it is fully supported with the tether cable which is included with the Ronin S. The C200 is a much heavier affair so I would not recommend using this camera handheld with the Ronin S. However, as luck would have it... that is several phone calls and emails to Glide Gear would have it ? they now have an adapter so that the Ronin S can be mounted to the Glide Gear arm to help support heavier setups. To that end I have tried the C200 on the Ronin S with the Glide Gear Arm and can report it is awesome. I could not imagine using the C200 on the gimbal without some sort of support. I have not done any testing beyond balancing with the C200, and mounting the Ronin S/C200 onto the arm and shooting some spray and prey footage ( I have not attached the monitor as I have not received the monitor adapter yet). Anywho, here are some quick picies of the setup. Comments or question welcomed.

If the C500 is not enough camera for you, it’s worth considering that perhaps the camera is not actually the issue. After all, if it’s good enough for a major motion picture... and with that said I as high a hopes as I have for the P4k, I’m not expecting it to live up to a C500. Just keeping it real.

MBP works better in my experience with FCP. However, if you are using Resolve a well spec’d PC is likely a better option. I’ve been migrating to Resolve as I feel it gives more control when working with Canon RawLite files, and I’m see lots of potential. It seems well optimized for either PC or Mac.

This seems like yet right place to put this sort of stuff... I’ll get it started with a few videos that are trickling in now that lenses are starting to be delivered:
