I don't care so much about 2x stretch. I have Canons also that require 1.33x so that's fine.

If the few samples I am seeing from the new SLR Magic 65 anamorphic adapter are any indication, it would seem SLR Magic are upping the quality of their anamorphic adapters. Hopefully, we will seen these improvements in their dedicated anamorphic primes also.

Gear has little to do with a good artistic work. And I am certain that the more available anamorphics become the more we will see great independent artist putting them to use. Money has nothing to do with artist talent.

I think this is more analogous to the move from tape to CDs. There was a big push to add the perceived warmth of tape to the sterile digital CDs.

Well if this is the target market for “affordable” anamorphics, let’s hope they are no more than $15k each... still affordable... by anamorphic standards, but priced sufficiently, as to keep these gems out of budget for most DSLR/Mirrorless users. After all, professional film crews have so few options. Or... perhaps, just maybe Samyang will not expressly forbid professional film crews from purchasing these lenses, but focus on the widely untapped DSLR/Mirrorless camera market? I would go out on a limb and wager there are more users in this category than the pro film crew market. Plus, no one has done this before... and yes I know about those god awful SLR Magic anamorphic primes... they don’t count. Perhaps when they come out with something that looks half way decent... but not now.

It’s not ugly, but it’s no beauty either. Of course none of that matters if it has “mojo”. Let’s hope that’s the case.

The Leica 42.5 Nocticron f1.2... This lens has something that mere spec sheet numbers cannot speak to. This lens has magic. It is one of those few "special" lenses. It's built to true Leica standards. As well made as any of my other Leica lenses. And at a price that is a bargain. It is designed for the Panasonic GH cameras, so performance will be exactly as expected. I consider this lens to be one of my best (regardless of system), and on a short list of the finest M43 lenses available.

Would love to see some footage, and when I say footage I’m not talking Arri Alexa/Mini and Red Weapon... but rather Canon C200, 1DXM2, 5DM4, Panasonic GH5/S, Sony Alpha etc... Crews with Arri’s and top of the line Reds don’t care about budget anamorphics. Also to attract DSLR and mirrorless users price should be “reasonable”.

I think it’s the SLR Magic anamorphic primes they are using. IMO those lenses are garbage. They should have just rented some Cookes.

At NAB I was checking out the Atlas Lens Co lenses... which cost $8k-$9k. While that’s pretty affordable when compared to other anamorphic primes, they are nonetheless priced beyond the reach of most would be filmmakers budgets. Whilst at the booth I ran into someone who was also considering picking up a set of the Atlas primes. We had a conversation during the coarse of which he advised holding off from buying the Atlas Lenses, as he had it on good authority that new players were entering the market and that 2018 is slated to be the year that anamorphics become affordable. Atlas lens was not the “new” manufacturers I was talking about. That video was about Atlas lens, but Altas Lens was not the “new” manufacturers I was talking about in the video when I said, “you may want to hold off from buying the Atlas Orions for now as more manufacturers are entering the anamorphic market and 2018 is slated to be the year anamorphics get affordable”. 1.56 into the video...

Here is some new footage shot with the C200 by the folks at Film Riot. It a short, granted YouTube compression is evident all over the place, but still nice to see something other than slowmo, weddings and plant life.

I’ll be updating soon. Will shoot some test footage and grade to see how it works out.

I had a play with this camera at NAB, the screen is a reasonable size, though not as high a quality as you would find on a high-end smartphone. It will do for the purpose. I wish it was a "flippy" screen though. When is the footage coming? That's the question.

I would love to see a successor to the NX1, it was a great camera in many ways. But I also remain pessimistic at the prospects of Samsung reentering the premium camera market. My guess is they will sell sensors and also adopt the tech in their smartphones.

Is this in a new update that is coming? I never shoot anything but CWL, but if it is good quality I might give it a shot.

Interesting... I recall when I reported that 2018 is supposed to be the year that anamorphics get affordable and many jumped all over my $h!t... guess the folks I spoke to knew something after all.

This is exactly why I suspect we will see many returns and lightly used examples on eBay. People expect convenience and many will be disappointed when they learn this camera is going to require extra effort to get the results they are after.

Well that report was put out be a highly respected source... so it probably accurate. But expect some of that DR to be noisy.

Not sure why people down voted an opinion? Anywho, I agree that manual focus can slow things down. These days when I need to focus manually I use the Tilta Nucleus M... it’s great. But mostly I’m focusing manually by using the focus assist feature of the C200, or simply tapping the screen. And it’s lovely. Just look at all the out of focus Red Raven footage out there. Auto Focus clearly helps a lot if you are a one man/woman production. Honestly, this is a silly thread... there is no chance that BMD will add DPAF to any of their cameras... not at any price. Heck, it’s not even coming with a flip-out screen... although it’s pitched as a vlogging cam. Would good AF not be considered essential for a Vlogging camera?... so there’s that. It’s a strange camera in that regard. I feel BMD don’t have a clue who they are targeting... or what features that target audience values. I’m sure it will sell a ton... initially. Then, after launch, sales will be sparse.

I suspect most of the people that said no have not used a Canon camera with DPAF. Having this feature does not mean you have to use it, but on a gimbal it sure helps keep the weight/complexity down.

Samsung uses DPAF in their smartphones, so clearly some form of it is available. Granted it’s a smaller sensor, but the performance is snappy, and there is no hunting.

It’s not that it’s big, the arm being at a 45° angle causes the overall height to increase several inches. This combined with the fact that it is also on the mount in this picture make it appear much larger. I had a chance to play with several gimbals in this category back to back at NAB, and at no point did I conclude anything other than it was the best gimbal at NAB... and they were all there.
