I’m hearing a lot of people saying the future is raw. So in that sense the C200 is more future proof. File sizes don’t bother me, as CFast card will gain larger capacities. Also I do not shoot anything all that long in continuous takes. Small size/weight will means it will travel more often. I think for most streamed content 8 bit will prove sufficient. The 10 bit C300mk2 footage I played with is flexible, but I believe raw may have more latitude. Does anyone know where there is some raw light footage that can be downloaded so I could have a play with it?

I’m not bothered by codec... Raw vs 10 bit XF-AVC etc... The things that can be answered by looking at a spec sheet are easy to discern. It’s the qualities that someone who has used both can speak to that most interest me. So what about low-light? IQ? Usable Dynamic Range? Build quality? Lack of time code is easily overcome by using an audio channel to input tc. Prosumer vs Pro... is this just inputs you are speaking about or something else?

With the current price of the Canon C300Mk2 now within a couple of thousand dollars of the C200, I was wondering which gives the better image quality. I understand limitations regarding codecs etc... but honestly, I cannot recall two many viewer watch a movie and saying, " I wonder what codec was used to record this?". So with this in mind, my concern is limited to IQ. What are your thoughts regarding iQ, DR, low-light etc...?

That’s what I seeing from the footage that’s out there. Mind you, I can’t recall ever looking at footage from the 1DXMK2 and thinking, “that looks horrible”. I believe these two cameras will complement each other quite well. What’s you experience with this combination? I understand there was a firmware update for the C200. How did that affect workflow? And do you favor the mp4 or XF-AVC for 8 bit work?

Hi @mercer I had a chance this weekend to take the 1DXMK2 and GH5S to the track. I shot both cameras in portrait mode and compared. I wanted to see what they could deliver straight out of camera. I compared color and overall "mojo". I cheated with the GH5S adding the BPM to it, in hopes it would yield more pleasing skin. But after much review, it confirmed what I had noticed in my prior footage. The Panasonics do not deliver the same level of "mojo" as the Canons. And you will work harder to get a good look from them. So, about that Canon C200... YES, I will be picking one up next week... after I return from DC. Having spent more time than anyone really should, comparing footage from the camera... both in the hands of geniuses, and the completely hopeless, I have concluded that the results from this camera when in the hands of someone with reasonable skill... and some knowledge of lighting, framing etc... can be virtually indistinguishable from footage from an Alexa. In all honesty, some of the footage could have legitimately fooled me into thinking it was from the aforementioned camera. I can't say I have felt that way about the GH5/S. Yes, the C200 is a lot more money... and I know the GH5/S can deliver great result. But for me, it always seems like I have to work harder to get good result from the Panasonics. Whereas my Canons just spit out great footage effortlessly. As for my filmmaking focus, narrative work is really what I enjoy doing. I love to see the whole production come together to tell a story. Any camera can do that. So don't worry about a budget if it's a strain financially. Heck, there's a new movie out soon that looks like 90% of it is shot with a webcam and screen grabs. I am, as you suggested... a hobbyist. I film for the sheer love of it. This is not my day job... it is a creative outlet. I do sometimes collaborate with a small group of likeminded creatives to work on projects... but it's just for fun.

I reported earlier that that the camera was dropping frames. It may well be that 12bit raw produces too much data for the current cards to write at 30 FPS. Don’t be surprised to see the specs change on this camera.

Indeed, and also strange so many remain convinced without seeing any footage from the production camera. For myself I will wait until the real reviews are out. With official footage. This camera seems interesting... let’s see if it lives up to the hype.

1DC is a special camera. Love the look of it. To my eyes the 1DC has a classic look, whereas the 1DXMK2 has a modern flavor. Both look great. The C200 matches well to the 1DXMK2. These cameras have an astetic that I think many associate with “pro”. Granted, framing, lighting, good sound and interesting subject matter is left to the operator, but they do take care of one aspect that can be hard to pin down.... mojo!

Thanks, there is definitely something about the Canons that make capturing good footage easier. I used to work hard with my Sony Alpha cams. The GH5 also more effort. The GH5S comes close, but nothing is as effortless as the Canons. With a little thought as to framing and decent exposure anyone can look pro with the Canons. Yes, the GH cameras are more detailed, but I’m starting to understand that extra detail is not always a good thing. I think I get it now

I wouldn't say dumping. The GH cameras play nice with anamorphic. It's something I would love to see on more cameras. Even the new BMP4k will skip anamorphic modes, so there will still be a place for the GH cameras. Honestly, they are great cameras. Bu the 1DXMk2 is no harder to work with in post. And straight from camera is pretty close to the finished product. The C200 was my original plan, but I got annoyed with Canon pulling a Canon and skipping the 10 bit codec, dual CFast slots, Raw out, timecode in/out etc... That said, I don't think the file sizes are much bigger than the 1DXMk2, and IQ looks pretty good. I'm sure you'll be happy with the combo. We are rather spoiled today. There are so many great cameras available.

How well would a Canon C200 work as a A-Cam with this camera?

After owning this camera since launch, I still have to admit it remains my favorite hybrids. Footage is useable straight out of the camera. Canon color remain a notch above the rest. And even with a baked in picture profiles, the codec allows the footage to be pushable when CGing in post. Still a great camera and top pick in mid 2018!

I'll agree it looks good. But I think this is more to do with the person behind the camera than the camera. I would have little doubt they could have achieved similar results with any number of cameras. Where for me the BMPCC lacked is in creating more punchy more modern looking images. It tends to always look vintage. You can make your footage feel 1960ish all day long. For me I prefer more flexibility.

Anamorphic with the GH5/S is a blast to shoot with. Both cameras do 10 bit. The GH5S can stop down more and stay clean. The GH5 works well hand held. Here is some footage:

With the exception of locking connections the HDMI standard is superior to SDI. It supports 18GBit/s vs SDI’s 3Gb, 6Gb or 12Gb/s options. Longer runs can be accomplished with cat6. The official hdmi spec is as follows: up to 16 bit RGB / 4:4:4 / 4:2:2 @30hz If HDMI spec is not good enough for you, where exactly are you planning to play back your content, as everything supports the HDMI spec anyway?

Yes, the lack of log was something everyone complained about. But unlike Panasonic, once Canon makes up it’s mind to pull a “Canon”, nothing can sway them.... not even overwhelming protest from their consumers.

Here is some footage I shot with the GH5S while in Las Vegas. I'm enjoying this camera a lot. Size and weight make it perfect for travel. Used the Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8. I think the new DJI Ronin S will make a wonderful companion to this setup.

I would love to see a larger sensor, m43? I sense the time is coming when a new type of camera format will emerge.

I really feel that for so many reasons moving to other cameras is a downgrade from the Canon 1DXMK2. The Canon color science really hits the spot. I shot video of Alcatraz also while in SF using the 1DXMK2, and was blown away by how good it looked. You never worry about weather, or harsh conditions with the Canon. It's rock solid. While I have been shooting more with the GH5S or late, and for CGing there is an advantage, the straight out of camera image looks so good that CGing is really not necessary most of the time. For stills it has no equal, if quick capture and magic are what you are after. It is a superb imaging tool. Professional to a fault.

I notice no discernible difference between my GH5 and GH5S. Honestly, they seem about the same. I would not let battery life be a deciding factor.

Pictures have just leaked of the new DJI Phantom Pro 5, and these leaked images show that the new drone will sport a new interchangeable lens system. One can only wonder if we will see this tech extend to an Osmo type device in the future?

I would love to see Samsung return with a killer camera. I am certain if they wanted they could crush everyone from Arri down. And sell the dam thing at a reasonable price. Hell they could probably even make anamorphic mainstream... if they were determined to. But I doubt they will. It's just not a big enough market to get them excited.
