Dinosaur, McFly? Perhaps one day, but this is not that day. The truth is the Sony is a great prosumer hybrid. Whereas the Canon 1DXMK2 is a great professional tool. Either can get the job done... but I would pick my Canon 1DXMk2 over my Sonys every time... if I could only have one. Luckily, I can have many... so problem solved
-
I’ve owned/own several alpha series cameras. My 1DXMK2 is like cheating when it comes to capturing great stills. And for CGing the codec holds together better. But honestly I started only using baked in colors on the Canon. It’s good enough not to have to monkey around with. I don’t consider the Sony alpha series to be in the same league as the Canon. If you want great video in a smaller package, opt for the Panasonic GH5S if using a gimbal or other stabilizing equipment. Nothing I have seen will beat the Canon for straight out of camera results for video and stills.

I agree, GH5 is one hell of a hybrid camera.

It begs the question why everything related to this camera must be discussed in this thread. When a thread is 82 pages long it makes sifting through the post time consuming. Proof in point, I asked Panasonic about this very question. And reported the answer here. Sub-topics are ok.

I don’t hate BMD... but I also don’t take everything they say as gospel. For the record I hope this new camera crushes everything including Arri and Red. But I hoped that for the GH5 also... and the Sony’s etc... I own stock in none of these companies
-
That’s not a GH5... it’s the GH5S.. and make no mistake, the two are very different.

I don’t think 4K raw will go away. Raw is pretty much unprocessed, so should have the least overhead. But higher frame rates might go. As might 12 bit. I think dual iso will make the cut... that is unless they switch to a different sensor. Usually I take well known manufacturers at their word. But BMD has over promised and under delivered many times in the past.
-
Looks like you are new to BMD and their promises... http://image-sensors-world.blogspot.com/2016/03/blackmagic-cancels-global-shutter-mode.html

So recently I had a chance to watch some footage that someone had captured at NAB from one of the prototype P4k cameras. BlackMagic would not allow us to insert a memory card into the camera. I was just about to do so, when I heard them warning another show attendee against doing so. After seeing the footage I understand why. It seems to be captured at a low frame rate. Almost like it's in a stills mode. We know the GH5S can capture raw stills at 12fps and 14 bit. So perhaps BMD was using a 12 bit stills mode to capture the video that we saw? All of this makes me wonder if or how the final specs will change. Do you think BlackMagic will deliver this camera as promised, or do you think something will be dropped? If so what?
-
After watching some video from this camera I wonder if any of the promised features will be dropped? That video looked mighty jerky. Granted, it was off the prototype model, and we do not know the data rate of the card that was used. But I would not be surprised to learn that some features will be cut. BMD didn’t want to go on the record about quite a bit when I was there. Which actually concerned me, as most everyone else I spoke to was willing to.

Interesting, I have never seen a camera mounted from the top like this. I wonder if the Ronin follow focus will work with this setup?
-
Wish I had more time to play with it. But here are a couple quick videos. I think it’s my favorite accessory.

Not sure if I can do a better job than you. I can only tell you if stopped down, focus and softness are less of an issue. While a gimbal can be used for static shots, for my taste if doing static shots, I feels a tripod is the best option. I got the gimbal to have dynamic moving scenes. I am aware that some become nauseous from this type of motion. But for myself, this only happens in very extreme movements. As for my conclusion... well my conclusion was to purchase the Tilta Nucleus M. And there ended all my focus worries. That's some nice outdoor footage. But being outdoors means they could stop down. Also half the scenes are slow-mo, which helps a lot. Now try doing that in a cramp basement... while going down stairs with hardly any room to move. This is a completely different scenario. I'm not saying someone out there could not do better... I am certainly not the standard to judge by.

What can I say, you are welcome post something better shooting on a gimbal with an anamorphic adapter and manually focusing. Then you will also learn that on the GH5, indoors, you're going to need to open up the aperture, after which you will discover that with the SLR Magic 40 compact shooting wider than f4 makes the image soft. As for using a gimbal for static shots... I use a tripod for that. The reason I purchased a gimbal was so I could follow a moving subject.
-
You might need to use the software to recalibrate your gimbal. I never needed to do this as the gimbal is generally pretty forgiving when balancing.

I think the problem is that much of this could not be answered by black magic. That is to say they did not want to commit to answers. I was surprised to learn that the reps refused to go on camera with any details that were not already posted on the website. I believe you will need to use the same speedbooster that the GH5S uses. Battery life is quoted as upto 1 hour. Stills mode is limited to 8MP. So that's not ideal. Since they would not allow anyone to insert an SD card no one knows how audio will sound. It was frustrating trying to pin them down for answers. I think this explains why most videos only state known facts. We did try to show size and handling. I'm sure footage will be available in the coming months.

Thanks for the video. I think yours is one of the first outside of the company. But honestly, everything looks cinematic in slow-mo... even an iPhone. Outside of music videos, the usefulness of slow-mo is limited. Why no normal speed video? I think that would really help to show how this camera and lens would feel for narrative work. Did you shoot anything at 24p? If so I would love to see it.

Here is a new review of the BMPCC4k. I think this camera is going to be tough to beat for the price.
-
The body is magnesium. It’s wrapped in a stick on grippy vinyl material. Check Canon’s website. There’s really no debating this.
-
Is this a joke? I think everyone knows Canon has been making several Magnesium alloy bodied cameras for years.
-
This is no three way battle. It’s a one way battle between your talent/creativity and lack of said talent/creativity. Any one of those cameras is good enough to capture a compelling and entertaining story... in the right hands.

Like you’re doing? I dispelled the rumor with the emailed response from Dan at Atlas Lens Co.
-
I merely said that’s what I heard at the show. Had you read through “the crap “ you would have seen that I contacted the CEO of Atlas for clarification.
-
I never said only one person mentioned it. I merely mentioned that one of the people that mentioned it was a rep from a European distributor and so I gave the comments some credence. You like calling me a liar? Was it not you that said throwing insults anonymously over the internet is what cowards do? Also if no one has ever mentioned this rumor beside me, why did you have a conversation about it with Dan a year ago? Do you think the average Joe knows anything about Atlas? Now ask yourself if it's likely anyone at NAB knew about Atlas. Is it really so unbelievable that someone else at NAB had heard this rumor also?
-
Falsehood? Serval people did claim at the show, that the lenses used projector parts. That's not a falsehood. That's simply what I was told at the show. I never claimed it as fact. I only reported what I was told. I had never heard of this rumor until I attended the show. And as for Dan emailing you to dispel this rumor... well you didn't forward that email to me. So how would I know what he emailed you? And if I started this rumor myself as you claim, how did Dan email you about this last year?
