  1. My guess is that you don't know me. I do not make things up, I merely shared what I was told. Also, calling me a coward? I don't recall attacking you personally... oh, and I'm on the internet. So I think everyone can see that's not my style. Not sure why projector lens parts is such an issues? The imagery looks good from these lenses. Even edge sharpness is good. Blows away those SLR Magic Anamorphic Primes. My only issue is paying $24k for a set if the focus and aperture gears are prone to breaking. FYI: I emailed Dan, so he can clarify the situation. Edit: just heard back from Dan, he said there is zero truth to the rumor, and that they could not manage to produce thousands of lenses using recycled parts. As for the focus and aperture gears, he said the samples at NAB were near final preproduction models, but end stop feel and cam speed will be far slower and smoother. So there you have the official response from Atlas Lens Co.
  2. Sure, yes... but wouldn't we all have preferred if the Pocket could have evolved, to 4k raw, with decent battery life, better screen that flipped etc. The new camera will likely be a great addition to the line-up. But it is nothing to do with the Pocket. It should really be its own model. Not the successor to the Pocket.
  3. I still plan to order this camera. But I'm not doing so until they are actually in stock. I feel competition is good, and the BMPCC4k might well prove to help drive down the cost of cinema cameras. That's a good thing however you look at it. Also great that they choose to throw in a full copy of Resolve. What is surprising is that this camera is not being compared to the original pocket at all.
  4. Agreed, a third party external monitor is not the same as a manufacturer accessory designed for the camera. In any case, having built in XLRs is great, but I will be convinced when I actually hear what it sounds like. I am at a loss as to why without any actual footage from either of the other two models everyone seems so quick to throw Panasonic under the bus. Is there another manufacturer that listens to their customers more than Panasonic? I think you would be hard pressed to find one. From the back screen I was not blown away by the BMPCC. But I will reserve judgement until I see real footage. Since they totally abandoned the idea of "pocket", I wish they had designed it to be something more modern and ergonomic. This Giant Point and Shoot (GPS) format looks awful, and will not rig or mount to a gimbal as readily as a more standard design. It also does not look very stealthy. I'm certain it will get more question than a hybrid design. The Z-cam had no footage at all, and no screen. It was just a box on a tripod. They listed specs but that's it. Without substance specs are meaningless. I liked what I saw from Kinefinity, and most of you know I was one of it's biggest critics. Still they need to fix the lag. I also recently heard about the fixed pattern noise on their 4k model. That also needs to be made right. But the Mavo looked pretty nice. This sensor is proving a real hit with filmakers. Not sure why people keep bringing up the GH5... it uses a different sensor. The GH5S is another animal. As for the cooling thing on the BMPCC4k, both the GH5S and Z-Cam forego the fan, so I am skeptical as to why the BMPCC4k needs this. Yes you could argue noise, but it might be due to inefficiency also. I'm would have liked to have seen a slot big enough for an SSD, and an optional battery extension. Flippy screen would have been fantastic.
  5. Is it deception? Why is everyone so concerned that these lenses might use projector lenses in part of their assembly. That does not bother me in the slightest. The only thing that bothered me was the weak and spongy stops on the rather light and flimsy feeling focus and aperture gears. The do not feel of high quality. And while I know they are affordable for anamorphic primes, they are still $8000-$9000 lenses. So they should feel solid.
  6. Only one of the three is a mirrorless hybrid. The Z-Cam is a modular camera like the Kinefinity and the BMPCC 4K is something else altogether. You really need to hold it to appreciate this point.
  7. Nothing top secret about it, but I’ll have to dig for a business card. Not that it matters, to my eyes the lenses produce a nice image. The bigger issue is they certainly don’t feel built like $8k -$9k lenses. Perhaps this will change? In any case 2018 is said to be the year that anamorphic get affordable, so that’s pretty positive. I did not get to try these on my cameras. They said they would have EF mount lenses at Cinegear and invited me to check them out. I’m simply reporting what I learned. IMO, DJI was the best at that show. Loved the Ronin S. It will be a instant buy for me. Follow focus and controls work with Panasonic cameras. Sony and others coming soon. Does it matter? The imagery was good regardless of weather it’s a projector lens or not. I doubt that the audience will care.
  8. Sorry @jonpais, I didn’t hear about that “rumor” here. I heard about that from a rep from a major European distributor. I think it’s safe to say it’s no rumor.
  9. Honestly Idk. But I do know that Panasonic said it is possible. So if there is demand they might well enable it in a firmware update. To my mind this would make the GH5S the best all rounder.
  10. NAB was a blast. Just got back and wanted to share a quick video of my experience from a quick hands on with the Kinefinity cameras. I also had a chance to check out the Atlas Lens Co. Orions series of anamorphic primes. I have never seen so much camera related tech in one place. It was a great experience and I can whole heartedly recommend it to anyone in this group as a must do event. Check out the video below. I will post more as time allows. Feel free to post comments or questions.
  11. Sure, but enjoy the 10 minutes of battery life
  12. I never said I wasn’t going to buy it. I said it’s no replacement for the GH5/S. And by now you and others have seen the side by side comparisons and should understand better. But what those comparisons do not show is how it feels in hand, or screen response etc... You will come to understand. No one could record output as BM did not allow it. I did witness the motion cadence from the rear screen and thought it was not as filmic as the V1 camera. You will no doubt see this soon enough also. Everyone is waxing on about how great this camera is... and they have not yet seen any footage. I’ve owned many BM cameras. But I’m no brand fanboy, so I’ll keep it real.
  13. Most here have not had a hands on with this chunky beast. After they do I suspect they will understand why the two are completely different animals. Right out of the box there is nothing “pocket” about this camera.
  14. Well if you want a weather sealed robust camera built to survive out of the studio you might see the price difference as worth it. Also the GH5/S is much smaller. Has a flip out / tilt screen. Time code anyone? Also if flying on the new DJI Ronin M the GH5/S will work with the built in follow focus... confirmed by DJI at the show. BM... err no. Need a flash? How about dual SD slots? CFast is expensive.., I know, that’s what my 1DXMK2 eats:-) Battery life important? Well then. Hey, I’m sure the larger screen is going to be great. But I promise you if you crank up the brightness you will eat through batteries. And if you are recording raw aren’t you going to need to add an external recorder/monitor anyway? BM was mighty careful not to go on camera with any of their claims. Panasonic did not shy away. They stated they can add raw output. So if things get heavy they will likely just add that in the new Prores Raw format and be done with it. They said this at the show.

    NAB 2018

Oh, yes and I will be sharing thoughts on their lenses soon.
  16. I have been pretty skeptical of Kinfinity as many here know. But from what I have seen after a hands on with both the TERRA is in a different league when compared to the new BMPCC 4K.
  17. I asked... It was a licensing matter with Apple. As a former BMPCC owner I can only tell you my impression after a hands on.
  18. The rep said it will be polycarbonate (plastic) with carbon fiber reinforcements. Don't expect it to feel like a magnesium alloy camera. You will be disappointed. Corners had to be cut to make the price point.
  19. I have to say, after a side by side hands on next to my GH5 and GH5S... well it did fell a bit like a cheap toy. Nowhere near the build quality of those cameras. You can immediately tell corners were cut.
  20. Flying out today I’m afraid, but enjoy the show. It’s a huge event.
  21. When I spoke to the folks at Panasonic they suggested they would be ready to act if the situation warranted it.
  22. I seem to recall overhearing them say they plan to add it in a future update. However the Blackmagic people were unwilling to say anything on camera.
  23. Just returned from NAB. Here is what I found out about the new Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. The Good: 1. Huge screen. 2. Surprisingly light.. 3. Ports 4. 12 bit 4K internal recording. The Bad 1. There is nothing “Pocket” about it. It’s huge for the form factor. 2. It is not of the same build of the MkI version. That is to say the new camera will be polycarbonate that is carbon fiber reenforeced. What does this mean in the real world. While it does not feel flimsy, it also fails to feel premium also. 3. The UI/UX design language will feel familiar, in it’s implementation. 4. Battery life of around an hour... read that to mean 45 minutes or so. Additional thoughts: I don’t see this as a threat to GH5/S as it is not the same type of camera... Apples to oranges. This is not something you are going to be carrying all over the place with you. :This is not a DSLR format camera. It’s something else, and that makes me think they should have moved to a new ergonomic form. Blackmagic would not let anyone pop an SD card in, so I cannot say how the IQ is. On screen it looked ok, but not “special”. On the other hand over at the Atlas Lens Co booth they were showing off their lenses with the new Kinefinity Mavo, and from what I could see it looked stellar.
  24. Ok question request... I’m going to be there later today. Is there anything missed that anyone is curious about?
  25. With a s16 sensor and 4K what usable ISOs can we expect?
