So as I wait for the pending arrival of my GH5S, I have been looking at some footage to convince myself that it is a smart move. In doing so I noticed that in a recent clip posted on YouTube, it compares the VLog-L mode to HLG mode (1.43). It seems that even after grading the HLG mode renders a better image, with correctly exposed whites, while maintaining details in the shadows. The whole image just looks better. So is HLG using the dual ISOs differently? Take a look and tell me what you think.

Masters of darkness - Panasonic GH5S and Sony A7R III in extreme low light

I can agree, but I think it’s him... not the camera. I say this because I have seen other footage that looks much better. -
Samsung is the sleeping giant in the camera market. We all know if Samsung wanted to put a cinema grade sensor with HDR with great low light and battery life into the NX2, they are in a good position to do so. Much of that tech is already going into their smartphone sensors. But the smaller format requires many more compromises.
-
I can tell you now, save for DR the NX1 was a great camera. It took me a little while to squeeze magic from it, but if you take time to understand you will be rewarded. If they make a NX2, I would like it to use a different lens system... Canon EF or MFT. I think this will go a long way toward people feeling like they are not going to get burned when investing in new glass. There is no doubt in my mind that if Samsung is determined to make a great camera, they will produce one that is best of class. I will take 10 bit, oh hell, make it 12 bit, compressed raw, with the option for 10 bit internal also. Oh, and can we have a realtime HDR sensor? Throw in SDI outputs on the extended grip. Put me down for two! Edit: I just read the proposed specs... Holly mother of god. Sounds amazing. Would love to see it happen.

Don’t know that I would count on this. I have no plans of selling my GH5, even though I have the GH5S arriving this week. I see them as different animals. My GH5S will mostly live caged, while my GH5 will roam free as I travel. The reason is simple, the GH5S is not a stills camera, whereas the regular GH5 is.

Looks like hell in these images. The worst I have seen to date. Broken camera?... something is off.

Nothing unequal at all. I do not need PB to answer my questions regarding reliability, customer service, and company stability as relates to Panasonic. Panasonic has been in business since 1918... they have a market cap of $33 billion. I can take heart in the knowledge that they are no flybynight operation. So all I really need to look at is footage, and make my decision from there. Better still PB did not get the GH5s from Panasonic, it was loaned to him by Wex Photo. So not loyalty needed to Panasonic. Kinefinity on the other hand likely paid PB, and thus requires closer scrutiny, especially since they have no reputation to speak of. I can see that perhaps some of you simply do not understand, or are unwilling to acknowledge what I am saying. If major retailers will not carry their product there must be a reason. Until they can get their act together and have stateside support that does not involve shipping units back to China, I will remain skeptical. @IronFilm I’ve seen you kicking this one around for sometime... did you buy one? If not why? I suspect you are just like me... curious, but skeptical.

No, I'm saying that gigantic companies have built their reputations over time, and are now in a position where the user base has learned to trust their products. I know you understand what I mean, so why act like this is a new concept?

New one out there comparing low-light against the usual suspects...

Masters of darkness - Panasonic GH5S and Sony A7R III in extreme low light

Where did you hear this? According to Panasonic the sensor in the GH5s is a Panasonic design. Sony had nothing to do with it. -
You make a valid point. But then again, as a current GH5 owner, I already know and trust Panasonic. The same can be said for most of the major manufacturers out there. So when I watch a work by someone such as @Neumann Films it's not so much about... is Panasonic a trustworthy manufacturer? Or, are their product reliable? It's more about the footage. And I believe in these cases the footage alone can speaks for itself. We no doubt disagree on this point. But for myself, before parting with several thousands of dollars I need to be convinced that it is cash well spent. I need to know that the product will be reliable and that the company is here to stay, and will stand behind their products. Any service issues must be handled promptly. I'm not staying that this will not be the case with Kinefinity... I'm simply saying, I do not know. If this was a camera I could buy stateside, from one of the major retailer, I would be more adventurous. But buying from a Chinese company and hoping for the best is not really my thing. I could be wrong, but I suspect many here feel as I do. Deny it all you like. But until Kinefinity can convince people such as myself, that have the cash to do business, but choose not to, because of these uncertainties, they will remain nothing more than an interesting oddity.

Well they state in the article that he will be appearing at their stand to answer customer questions and share his experience from using their camera... so he is either doing this out of charity or he’s getting something in return. One would naturally assume the latter, as Kinefinity is not a nonprofit organization. Really people, it’s not that far of a reach. I doubt many here can honestly say they would spend all day working as an unpaid rep for any “for-profit” company. Why would they? Hey I like Canon, Panasonic, Sony and many more, and I would happily check out their stand at whatever show... but I’m not working there for free. I sincerely doubt Mr.Bloom would either. He’s probably charging them for use of his name and image in the promotional material also. Do the math.
-
And he would have known it was a bad product before he took their money? However you want to see it, once you take pay for a review your opinions are no longer objective.
-
So they paid PB to rep for them... I think his opinion will be biased at this point. Too bad, I wanted to hear is honest thoughts. Oh, I’m sure he will say that he is nonetheless giving an unbiased report... but we know better. You don’t piss all over the people paying your bills.

Yes, it supposed to be cats or welders.... or welding cats
-
Yes, it’s very interesting. I think there is a lot of potential to this camera. If I was in the position that I could only have one, I would handily choose the GH5s over the GH5. Not that I ever look at my GH5 and think it’s not great, but I am constantly away of it’s limitations. I will not have my GH5s until next week Wednesday. I am looking forward to this camera.
-
So according to Mark from Panasonic the GH5s does not use a Sony sensor as many had thought.
-
This looks pretty dam good to me.

Since no doubt many here are interested in this camera I thought it might be nice to have a thread where we could post footage. I’ll get things started with the below submission. It’s not my work... but I did stay at a Holiday Inn express once

The BMCC is a mirrorless camera. Granted, it is not a hybrid camera, but rather a dedicated video camera. I guess my point is there are larger bodies out there with smaller sensor if we are talking "video". For me the GH5 is a good size... not too small, not too large. The NX1 was also a good size. Would I cry if it was slightly larger? Probably not, but then again I have gotten use to lugging around the 1DXMk2, so I might be jaded.

Exactly, in the stills world hdr is accomplished by taking two pictures at different exposures and then combining the two. With a conventional sensor we must try to squeeze this detail out in post. But even then, at these price points, the amount that can be squeezed is limited. Having a sensor that actually can capture multiple exposure at once is a cheaper and perhaps better alternative for a camera in this price range. But it would be nice if each pixel could adjust its own exposure. But don’t hold your breath for that one. Nonetheless, someone is working on it
-
Unfortunately, you are wrong. The starvis chip does indeed support true HDR capturing... that is... recording high and low ISOs simultaneously. However, Panasonic choose not to implement this feature. Opting instead to use the dual circuits to support their “dual ISO” feature. This was IMO a mistake. Can it be enabled in firmware? Probably, but there are no plans to do this that I am aware of.
-
The official one. I don’t feel the transformation to 24p worked for motion cadence... Not to my eyes. Perhaps others can chime in?

Are there any cinema cameras that have IBIS? Nothing comes to mind
