AJA sent me out one a while ago. Can’t say I was impressed at all. Plus the thing is giant. I passsd and have never regretted it.
-
Seems they went for dual ISO instead of implementing real time HDR with dual exposure. This was really a major point of the Starvist sensor.., if that’s what it uses.
-
Indeed the highlight roll-off seems pretty nice. As for lag on the GH5, this might be to do to certain monitors and their processing power. I am using the SmallHD Focus and have not experienced any lag on the HDMI.
-
It’s a pre-production unit. So hopefully this is rectified by release. The final judgment will be the image. If NR is good, and doesn’t turn the image to mush while it maintains high IQ, then I’m ok with it. I’m honestly hoping this thing pans out. We will know soon enough. Like I’ve said before clean 6400 ISO would be enough to make me happy. Anything beyond that is just gravy.

I’m not sure what all the fuss is about... if you love the GH5 you still have the option to buy it/keep it. I have already preordered the GH5S and plan to wield both. I’m not heartbroken about losing IBIS, I have a GH5 for that. Those holding out hope for Sony maybe disappointed. The larger sensor combined with smaller body will not bode well for heat. So a A7 series camera will likely lack 10 bit, 4K@60fps and IBIS if this sensor family is adopted... assuming it is a Starvist... which I do not believe is yet confirmed? For my taste a A9 series in “S” flavor makes far more sense. EVA1: my biggest turnoff, and the reason why I skipped it was poor low light performance. And I know I’m not alone in that thinking. So the GH5S seems like Panasonic’s redemption for the EVA1 in some ways.
-
Well if it is always 9 frames that would be pretty easy to code around.
-
Well up to about 12800 it would seem that the GH5S does in fact have the edge. The Sony retakes the lead beyond that point. So it really depends on where you will be shooting. Another consideration is that the added DOF might not be desirable on the Sony as it can make focus more challenging.
-
So is this the rumored Starvis sensor? Is it real time hdr?
-
Don’t think Arri, Red or BM have IBIS. So for a cinema camera... Anywho, fortunately I own a tripod and a gimbal. Low light when shooting indoors in more problematic for me.
-
Nothing about the new camera yet.
-
I honesty feel that the limitation that caused it to be removed is heat. Keep in mind that the sensor is capturing two exposures for HDR. This is something no other sensor is doing. And I am certain that these heat issues will keep this sensor out of the Sony Alpha line of cameras. They are already plagued with overheating issues. And if it does find its way into the A7Siii, it will likely be crippled in some way... and to a higher degree () than the larger GH5s.

Clean low-light is a bigger deal to me. I can get stabilized images from many devices including smartphones. It's pretty easy to come by. And the GH5 and the G9 have that. Clean low-light is more elusive.
-
Well, if that's you preference the GH5 is currently available For myself I see this thing as a dedicated video camera, not a hybrid. I will use it as such. I am leaning towards the G9 as a hybrid. GH5... baabye
-
Well let’s be honest, at 10.2mp if shooting stills, you would want a higher resolution anyway. This is a one trick pony, not a hybrid... regardless of the form factor.
-
So the new sensor is 10.2mp. So why call this a hybrid camera. Surely at this resolution this is really a dedicated video camera. Speaking for myself I cannot imagine taking this camera along if I wanted to also capture stills that I might print. This seems to be a cinema camera. Granted one that should be great in low light. Pending amazing footage and motion cadence I will buy one. But I wonder if the G9 should replace my GH5? Better stills, AF, size/weight. G9/GH5s?
-
Must have missed where they specified 1 extra stop of low light? I think it will be more than that. I also will miss the IBIS. If this new sensor was so amazing to warrant skipping this feature, then it had better be on hell of a performer.
-
Does it matter if using a gimbal? I’m thinking it’s still a go... pending footage.
-
Latest rumors pointing to no IBIS, duel ISO like Eva 1 and the Sony IMX294CJK senor.
-
In some ways this camera and the G9 seem to make the GH5 somewhat irrelevant. The G9 shoots video well enough for most situations... it is superior for stills, and, is likely the best of the bunch for travel. AF is much improved over the GH5. Color science is said to be the best ever from Panasonic. While the GH5s is rumored to be the best choice for dedicated video, with usable lowlight performance for improved indoor usage. It seem likely that the new camera will also sport improved AF. For all its bells and whistles, I think these two cameras, in many ways overshadow the GH5. Relegating it to a more evenly balanced, but also more compromised hybrid use case.
-
The Sony A7Sii has IBIS so not sure why the GH5s could not. It's not like it is a small body after all.

instagram suck as a way to judge image quality. I want to say it looks good, but that might just be wishful thinking. I would be happy with clean 6400 ISO. If this can indeed do clean 12800, I would be more than happy... which actually sounds like a dangerous medical condition
-
Horses for courses... IMO 3200 is noisy.
-
Wish this was bigger. Hard to tell. But I know anything over 1600 on the GH5 is questionable.
-
I’m betting we will hear something on the 8th. CES is the perfect venue for such an announcement, and I’m certain Panasonic is not going to show up empty handed.
