Well December has passed and nada so...
-
Since the December thread clearly did not happen here is a new one for January. I think the current rumor is pointing to the 8th. Here is a fresh image that was tweeted out today!

New date is Jan 8th

Saying Sony will not help Panasonic is like saying Samsung would not help Apple. But in fact, they do supply screens and other components to Apple... and other competitors. In the end money is money. Android users do cross-shop iOS devices, as do iOS user consider Android. If these industry titans can sell to one another, I am certain the same can be said for Sony and Panasonic.

Well they did say the have never seen an incident such as this with either the Canon 1DXMK2 or Nikon D5. So I guess some are sealed better than others. Sony to their credit do not list the A7Sii as weather sealed, moisture or even dust resistant. Whereas the A7RII does claim both dust and moisture resistance and the A7R3 adds a whether sealing claim into the mix.

Veydra Mini Primes vs. SLR Magic Hyperprimes for MFT
DBounce replied to HenryTheGoodman's topic in Cameras
Veydras do not breath. If that matters to you. -
Way better in low-light than the GH5 should not be hard. I almost never push the GH5 beyond 1600 ISO. Whereas the 1DXMk2 can easily do clean 6400 and 12800 in a pinch. I would be happy with clean 6400 from the GH5. If we get more than that it would be great. I think the latest 43rumor specs seem realistic. The question is how clean the new ISO range will be. Would have loved to have seen a clean raw output option.

Curious about battery life... How long can you shoot for on a full charge? Also how long does it take to charge? I would be curious about learning how you get on with the Kinefinity. Please share your experience: what you love, and what you hate. While I do find the footage fairly cinematic, I have had reservation about buying a camera from China that does not seem to have a large presence in the USA.
-
Specs aside, from the frame grabs I am liking what I am seeing. We won't know for sure until we see some actual footage under various lighting conditions. I will be curious to see how this pans out.

I read that story. If true it would seem to cast some doubts on the speculation about a Sony STARVIS sensor being used.
-
Why do we assume this is 10 bit?
-
Is it possible @Neumann Films Shot this with a lens designed for S35, because it is an S35 sensor. I’ll post some diagrams to prove my point below.
-
Well the lens a Zeiss Master Anamorhic 35 is designed for S35 sensors. So if info about the lens can prove something, it would stand to reason that the sensor is S35. That would be outstanding. The lens is designed to work with S35 cameras.

@mercer If this is true, tell me how JVC is managing to sell the GY-LS300 for only $2,495? Clearly it can be done. But I suspect many here wish it to cost more. It blows my mind as to why this would be. Because it seems the people that want it to cost more are those without the pocket to purchase it at the $3k-4K mark. For myself beyond $4k other options may seem more interesting. But for those without the pocket, why the desire to have it be released for more than the speculated $2.5k? Regardless of what this puppy does. If DJI or whoever, puts out a refined OSMO like camera with similar or better performance I’ll be upgrading yet again. I think that form factor is where the future is.

I would not be annoyed at all. I would just preorder the new camera and either sell the GH5 or keep it as a B-cam. The reason I would not be annoyed is because I purchased the GH5 fully knowing it was not perfect. I expected to upgrade it. The funny thing is I didn’t want to have to wait 3 years to do so. I have had many Sony cameras and have become accustomed to frequent updates to the model line. Also, I upgrade my phones every 6 months or so. I seldom keep a car for more than 2 years. So for me upgrading is always expected. And frankly, if it is a major upgrade, then the sooner the better. What do you think I would do if the next Sony camera blows away the GH5? Well I can tell you, I will upgrade to the Sony. I am not married to any particular brand/model line. We live in a disposable society. Today’s new is old before it’s even released. The only part of my kit that does not update regularly are my lenses. But lord knows, I do certainly add to that collection regularly :-) I do not understand all the resistance to this camera. DON’T YOU WANT A BETTER CAMERA? I do. I am eager to get my hands on this bad boy. Would you rather have to wait 4-5 years for it? I have to admit, I just don’t understand this resistance.

I’m not sure why a GH5 owner should be pissed off if a new model comes out that uses a S35 sensor? Does not the JVC's GY-LS300 sport a S35 sensor and have a M43 mount? If they can crack this nut, cannot Panasonic?

Honestly, from what I have seen from the frame grab, save for resolution it looks pretty dam good. I dare say better than my GH5, better than my 1DXMkII, Sony A7RII. It looks well balanced. Highlights are within check, all the shadows are clean. It’s a marked improvement. DOF, well, that is not bad, but I can get pretty ridiculous DOF with an anamorphic on the GH5 using diopters. And really, most of the time I am not shooting wide open as doing so in video presents a host of issues when trying to hold focus. I am not sure what voodoo is going on with this new camera... talk of a 35mm sensor is intriguing, but I doubt they would have gone that route. Largely because if they did, I’m suspecting that this camera’s performance would surpass that of the EVA 1 in low-light. I know that the EVA 1 is in stock at BH and no one seems in a hurry to pick one up. I myself toyed with the idea, but after seeing the initial footage decided it would be wise to hold back. Who knows,... maybe Panasonic is cutting their losses with the EVA 1 by cannibalizing the tech and creating a Frankin GH5x monster camera. If that is the case, take my money :-D

I have both the iPhone X and Note8. Of the two I think the iPhone X edges out the Note8 in the camera department. But as a productivity tool the Note8 wins hands down. The new chip should once again secure Samsung’s traditional camera dominance. They didn’t really try with the Note8, and that was a bit disappointing. Instead opting to largely reuse the camera from the S8. i don’t think this race is going to stay on equal ground. A radically new sensor technology, that is not handicapped by size will make its way into smartphones. That’s when things will get interesting.
-
Perhaps, but if you ever film indoors, or at night then smartphones falls seriously behind very quickly. True you can light your scenes, but that means carrying a lighting kit with you Both are good tools and both can be appropriate in given situations. I do think the day w ill come that smartphones can outperform the current batch of cameras. But to do so will require a radical breakthrough in sensor technology.
-
I would love to see this tech make it’s way into the GH5s... 8k/4K Organic Sensor
-
Apparently this is now pushed back until the 8th of January. That is right around the time of CES 2018.

I’ll go one better than this... what if another manufacturer releases a camera that beats the GH5 in every way? Better handling, low-light, battery life, IQ, AF, stabilization... just crushes it in everything. Will that hurt the value of the GH5? Of course it will. It is a well established fact that the GH5 suffers from poor AF in video and low-light is not exactly the best. All GH5 owner purchased their cameras, so we all stand to lose some resale value. But after the next release of the new “best camera”, our current cameras will be no less capable than the day we bought them. Cameras are generally not an appreciating asset. If you wish to make money with them, you must do so by using them to create a product that then earns a return. Let me give you all a heads up... after you plop down money on the new GH5s, rest assured that a relatively short while after doing so, a new better camera will be released. One that addresses the shortcomings of the GH5s (or whatever model number). And yes, there will be shortcoming. If this bother you, don’t upgrade. You only realize the lost once you sell and lock it in. Why exactly is this a problem? As I recall there is only one camera manufacturer that ever promised not to release updates in a short timeframe. And that manufacturer is Canon. The irony of that is Canon are consistently given grief for not innovation rapidly enough. Yet the only way they could do this would be to release more regular updates. Also the model protection that Canon puts in place so that no model steps on the toes of another is constantly criticized. Yet in doing this they seemingly protect the value of each of their products. If you prefer Canons way of doing things, well buy Canon. They make great cameras. But if you want the latest and greatest features and tech, go with Sony or Panasonic.

Everyone is focusing on the red buttons, but look at these hard angles on the left rear of the camera. These lines do not conform to any current Panasonic camera. Not GH5 or G9. And the angles are no optical illusion, as they are clearly present in both images, even though the pictures are taken at different angles. It’s clearly a brand new model, not merely software.
-
I would love to see best in class AF. But I don’t know that Panasonic could pull that off in video. Lowlight... maybe? With all this hype, they better bring their A-game.
-
Price... Price this thing at $1k-2K premium and I promise you many will see the more affordable GH5 as a better option, regardless of what the new camera brings.
