That would be a step in the wrong direction from my point of view. The organic sensor that Panasonic has been developing has the ability to selectively change the sensitivity of individual pixels. This is a much better approach than merely cutting down light for the entire sensor by using an ND filter. I would like to see some real innovation. I have NDs, as do I would wager most of the GH5 owners here. The assumption seems to be inferred that removing the mechanical shutter has no downsides. Well if the Sony A9 and A7RIII are examples, I can tell you that many have reported rolling shutter problems when using electronic shutter in place of mechanical. Also those cameras seem to suffer from defocus issues when using electronic shutter.

I could care less about labels. No camera to date has been perfect, so it is absolutely reasonable to desire something that checks more boxes. The current GH5 is a great camera. But we all know the GH6, 7 and 8 will be better still. If you can upgrade without breaking your budget... then why not? Ask yourself this, would any manufacturer add features or enhancements if they believed no one would ever upgrade to the new and improved model? If we as consumers choose not to reward and recognize when companies innovate, then innovation will die. If the GH5S... 0r whatever it’s called is substantiallly better than the current GH5, then I will buy it. Hell, I might buy two and put my old GH5 up for sale. I know many other will do likewise. I don’t shoot film to pay my bills. I just enjoy it as a creative release. I do it for the love of the art. If something I shoot gets likes or entertains, then that is payment enough for me. People need to understand that just because a new model is released, does not mean that somehow the current model will be rendered incapable of shooting the images it did when you first bought it. Your old GH5 will still be every bit as good as the day you purchased it. If you choose to upgrade to the latest and greatest, then you are simply confirming that there was indeed room for improvement. Personally, I hope the GH5S (or whatever the name) is amazing, and makes my current GH5 feel like a piece of junk. Because if it can do that, it’s gonna be a keeper... well, until the GH6

Are the bts shots also done with the new camera?
-
If the frame grabs are 6k, how can the sensor be 10MP? Minimum would be 16MP. But likely higher if downsampled.
-
For those that are happy with things as they are, great you are done upgrading. For myself I will take all the flexibility I can get. Would love clean lowlight. I’ll take 15 stops of DR. I have six hdr displays, so I’m sure I’ll be able to see a difference on one of them. I for one am sick of reviewing footage only to find the image turned to mush or there was color noise in the shadows.

Ok, I’m leaning towards a new camera as opposed to firmware. A second image has emerged that shows a red ring around the dial of the camera that Casey Neistat is using in the helicopter video. This would seem to confirm the earlier analysis of the frame grab from the video posted by @Neumann Films that seemed to show a red ring on the right dial. Since this red ring is Panasonics new design language to signify top tier cameras in the Lumix lineup this it stands to reason they would use it on this more expensive model. Also there is another image of the front of the camera that seems to show s red letter below the model designation. So why did the GH5 not get a red ring? Will future GH5 get the red ring?

I don’t doubt they could build an amazing anamorphic if they wanted. I would go as far as to say that they could even offer it cheaply... I just don’t think they would... and by cheaply I mean sub $3k... which in the M43 world is still not cheap.
-
Yes, but some have speculated that the red button is actually a button enhancer, that is readily available online. They postulated that it is on the camera as he is wearing gloves.

Affordable and Leica doesn’t go together. So given these will be Panasonic/Leica we might only be paying $20k per lens... https://www.ducloslenses.com/collections/summilux ...which is a real bargain for a Leica branded cinema lens
-
Yes, it’s feeling a bit like this might be the case. And if so my wallet thanks you Panasonic.
-
6k? Then talk of lower resolution is premature, as this image would likely be downsampled to 6k.
-
Well I can’t speak to the skin tones, I can say that the dynamic range looks to be pretty good.
-
All this talk about DR, honestly I would just like to be able to expose the sky and my subject without sacrificing one for the other. As I understand it, the organic sensor that Panasonic has been working on for the past seven or so years can essentially do exactly this. Put that sensor and even AF as good as the new G9 in the GH5 and Panasonic can have my money. But I would prefer they not reduce pixel count. I like detail, and the option to crop in on photos.
-
Yeah, they would go nuts... but what would they then do? They would order the new camera. In any case, it seems plausible that we will get fewer MP in this new model. If that is the case we would lose open-gate, 6k photo mode and other goodies. Could we expect a softer image, due to less down sampling? So enough holes will be left to warrant another camera. I would add this as a B-cam for dynamic range and low-light. But the lower MP count would mean I would be stuck without these feature when on vacation, because I might want to take a few pictures. And if any of those pictures are “special”, well who knows, I might want to print them? Low light is useful some of the time... as is HDR, but decent resolution is useful far more often in my use case. This might play out to be the A7RII vs A7SII all over again. My pick was the R. And as for DPAF, well I miss it dearly every time I use the GH5. My smartphone has it... my Canon has it, and Panasonic NEEDS to have something like this in their next camera. Once you have used it, you will no longer make, frankly stupid arguments for not needing or wanting it. Let see how easily you maintain focus with a shallow depth of field on a gimbal without it. This is 2017, good AF is not a luxury... it should be a standard feature on all flagship cameras. Nuff said!

Well if they are going to be asking north of $2500 for a m43 camera it had better bring it’s a game on most every front. Stripping out features will not earn my interest. When Sony offered both the A7RII and A7SII, I opted for the R, as I like the idea of taking one camera and being able to do printable stills and also capture good quality video. I will be curious to see what this camera offers, but I am skeptical of paying $2500-$3k for m43. At that price a strong case is made for simply sticking with the GH5. That is, unless it is something very special. I’m hoping for the best, but preparing to be underwhelmed.

I think that is my point. I am hoping to see some improvement in the sensor tech rather than merely decreasing pixel count. Ideally, I would prefer to keep the pixel count the same, or even increase them, if it could be done while increasing both ISO performance and DR.
-
Few would argue that the A7SII would not have better low-light performance. For myself I am more concerned with dynamic range when dealing with very bright backgrounds or areas in the picture and a subject that need to be exposed correctly. This often results in overexposing the highlights. The article also states that rolling shutter is worst on the A7SII, so another trade off. I don’t think you are hoping for this older tech over the much improved organic sensor are you?
-
According to this article in Cinema5D, when comparing the DR of the Sony A7RII to the A7Sii the R variant showed a 1/2 stop improvement. When using S-Log 3 on the A7SII it managed to gain an half stop, so it tied the A7RII in DR. In the end, our best hope for improved DR would really be a different senor technology, not merely larger pixels.
-
No sure why bigger but fewer pixels would increase dynamic range? I really hope we see some true innovation in this release like the organic sensor. That actually would increase dynamic range by a huge margin, while also greatly improving ISO performance.

Yep, I have those frame grabs in the other post. However, I never noticed the red on the left dial until now.

The Apple clips app runs on iOS devices. With the rollout of the iPhone X and version 2.0 of the app it can now create virtual scenes and place the subject with the virtual scene. No green screen is needed. It does all of this in real time, all with the smartphone. It’s pretty awesome. I think in the not too distant future such tools will be central in many productions.

Fooling around With the new Apple clips app 2.0 version on the iPhone X. This thing is the most fun I’ve had in a long time. So easy to use I make instant music videos. I would love to see this thing on the rear facing camera also. BE205335-C2D1-4636-BAED-0E3B48CEB320.MOV

A new GH5 variant will not diminish the IQ of your GH5. And if a new variant is indeed what they announce, then the current model will almost certainly continue to be sold. So the value will still be there. I only hope that if Panasonic do release a more expensive variant, they do not cripple it to protect the GH5. I hate the idea of needing a GH5 for this use and the ***** **** for another situation.
-
I would hope it is not just decreased mega pixels for improved low light. The Sony A7R III does 42MP. So their is a high resolution variant. I consider the GH5 to already be pretty low MP considering some of the other options. Let’s hope for a real innovation, not just some rebranded Sony answer to the problem.
