  1. So I have had my GH5 for a couple of months now, and I have had a couple of incidents with it. 1. Whilst hanging out on a friends yacht I ran into an embarrassing situation when a few of the party goers wanted a group picture. I had the GH5 on hand, so was happy to snap the picture, however for no reason I can think of, the GH5 out of the blue started to fire it's shutter uncontrollably. It was firing at a rate faster than I have every witnessed, and would not stop until the battery was pulled. I removed the lens and reconnected it. Then reinstalled the battery and powered on the camera... reframed my shot and attempted to retake the shot. To my surprise the camera repeated the locked shutter behavior and again would not stop firing until a full hard reset. No actual pictures were captured. I have had one card read error on this camera also. Another thing I have noticed is that I will occasionally get a message displayed on the screen that warns the lens is disconnected. This happen with both of my Leica lenses. While the first problem only happened on the one occasion, the latter problem pops up from time to time. In all instances the lens in indeed attached and locked in place. These gremlins are not issues I have ever had with any of my other cameras. Sony ran well (a couple software freezes), Samsung ran well, Canon rock solid (bullet proof). I am sending the GH5 in to Panasonic so they can take a look at it. But my concern is one of reliability. Is this a camera that can be trusted to deliver reliable performance, or is it a feature filled camera with questionable reliability? This might well affect my potential decision on the EVA1 also, as I do not really want a camera that is temperamental. I'm hoping mine is just a lemon.
  2. The true depth camera system seems to be a groundbreaking technology. I would love to see that integrated in to a cinema camera. It seems like it eliminates the need for green screens altogether. We can only hope that Apple licenses this tech. I am sold. Yes Samsung screens look great, but for the first time in a long while I am seeing true innovation from Apple. Well done! Below is a demo of the Clips app that uses this tech...
  3. I can't help but suspect the Hydrogen will be a gimmick. The iPhone is going to help drive some innovation, and I like that. Mobile moves much faster. Can't wait to see how Android answers the new iPhone.
  4. Well the face tracking appears quite impressive. I could see that being handy for VFX. The camera appears to have the ability to do "portrait lighting". They claim this is not merely a filter, but actual real lighting effects that are applied in realtime. So you can have the look of an actual professional lighting setup, but all within the phone. I would be curious to test this out. And also, this would be amazing for video.
  5. Thanks for the compliment. But do you really think 10 bit was such a hard feat for a camera as large as the 1DXMk2? Remember the GH4 could output 10 bit 4k from the HDMI port.
  6. Let me start by saying, I'm not a fan boy of any brand. I currently use a Google Pixel XL as my daily driver... I've owned Apple, Samsung, LG, Sony, Motorola etc... But after reading the leaked specs I am interested to see what the new phone from Apple will bring. Finally it will have an OLED screen. And it will almost certainly be a 10 bit HDR certified one. The camera will shoot 4k 60p. And the CPU should be the fastest in any phone. This should all add up to a compelling little device. I believe the official announcement is around 1pm EST. So we will know soon. What are your thoughts? Are you curious to see what Apple brings? Do you think that the innovations we see in the new device will find their way into serious filmmaking tools? Post your thoughts here.
  7. The 1DX2 produced good video... The only thing wrong with it is that 1. There is no log profile 2. It should be 10 bit 422. 3. There should be a clean 4k 60p 10 bit or raw output. 1080p should look way better. Ok... So there are a few issues... But the stills are lovely:-)
  8. I like the imagery from Canon cameras. I dislike the protectionist business model. But nevertheless, Canon continues to reign as number one... So perhaps they know what they are doing. I want to like the C200, but it's comprises are tough to swallow, and I know it would be a love hate affair. We can only hope Panasonic comes to the rescue...
  9. If I recall correctly those lenses are too wide. 35mm > is a good start. As for the GH7... well, we'll have to see that one when it's released
  10. Are those MBPS? If so those are pretty hefty files. The Snapdragon 821 can capture 4K UHD @ 60fps in 10-bit H.264, as can the 835... But neither can do this in Hevc.
  11. It's official... http://www.newsshooter.com/2017/08/24/new-codec-coming-to-the-c200-in-2018-will-only-be-420-8-bit/
  12. For me it goes something like this... If Canon doesn't want the $7500 I was about to drop on this camera that's fine. I vote with my wallet. I'm hoping with GH5 with new codec will fill all the missing pieces. If not perhaps the EVA1... But honestly a second GH5 would be my preferred solution. When cameras are smaller and lighter, all the supporting hardware can also be smaller and lighter. That's a win, win to me ?
  13. 1600 is my max, 95% of the time... 3200 in a pinch. Nothing higher though.
  14. For me I just find it interesting, as even though a camera might be more capable, not always are you allowed to take it everywhere. A smartphone is much more innocuous. Perhaps equally important is the audio capabilities of this phone. It is said to have the best playback and recording of any smartphone. Also there is talk of an external module related to audio recording. Imagine having better recording quality than a dedicated field recorder, but in your smartphone? For content creator's it seems to have a lot to offer.
  15. I agree that m43 is much more adaptable. While I have a good collections of both, it would be nice to be able to get the advantages of the SB on the the EVA1. Still I remain unconvinced to this date. The 800-5000 ISO of the Varicam is a much more useable spacing. I already have the GH5 set to a max of 1600 ISO to keep things clean. But would love the ability to have a 5000 base ISO. That would be reason enough to add the EVA1. But unfortunately Panasonic did not add this level of separation. I will need to be convinced. And only footage will do that. I hope the lowlight performance is good.
  16. Well that's all well and good, coming from... who the heck is this guy? But there are countless reviews online from names we all know repeatedly saying that the screen and camera are amazing. So, maybe we should just discount everything they have said and instead believe what's his face? And here are 5 reasons the V30 doesn't suck... And the number 1 reason... The screen! Maybe mr.What's his face, got a bad unit... Or doesn't have the phone at all, and is just click bait?
  17. From Wired... "Both have super-bright f/1.6 lenses, and 10-bit HDR sensors."
  18. Well, I'm not going to waste time guessing when I can just read the articles... from the first article it clearly states that the v30 can capture 10 bit video: Having a HDR capable screen is expected for a flagship device... the big deal about the V30 is that it can also be used to capture HDR content with it's 10 bit HDR camera in 4K. So you can now create and view HDR video with one device.
  19. Here scroll down to number 5.
  20. Yes, 10 bit log, and it supports luts.
  21. I was surprised to learn that the LG V30 is shipping with what appears to be an industry first, a 10 bit HDR Camera with a true log profile. They even go as far as to add in phone color grading. Combine this with the best audio of any phone, including auto capture, and I think it safe to say that the LG V30 is a content creator's dream phone. http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/article.php?a=19500
  22. I have two HDR TVs, one Sony and the other LG Oled, both are epic. You end up rewatching movies you have already seen as they feel new again. I highly recommend that if you are in the market for a new TV, just spend a few $$$ more and go with something that supports HDR. In another two years the big push will be 8k. I know that now an 8k TV can be had for as little as $9k. Not cheap, but keep in mind that it was not long ago that such a TV would have been $130k... so it is progress.
  23. Looks good. Too bad Samsung gave up on this camera. It was truly before it's time. Thankfully we still have Panasonic, and to a lesser extent Sony.
