  3. Wow, just wow... Respect for Panasonic just went up big time. Canon who? This is amazing, Panasonic have gone above and beyond my wildest expectations with this update. My decision to invest in the Panasonic system now justified. Canon never did anything like this for us. I am still waiting to see what EVA1 brings, but if the lowlight performance is there, I can see it making a nice addition to my tool kit. If not, another GH5 will be in the cards. In any case, this is massive. The competition is surely looking stupid right now. Hey Sony, Canon, Nikon etc... this is how you earn customers business and repeat business.

  6. Thanks, I'm really trying to embrace shooting anamorphic. These takes honestly did not require much prep. No more than 10 minutes. It was adhoc, so pretty quick. I set the GH5 to a max ISO of 1600 to keep things cleaner. The setup is pretty light, particularly if you are using the handlebar kit. Everything in this setup is there for the following reasons: 1. Lightweight: I would guess the setup pictured is about ~7lbs. I have not weighed it, but it is much more manageable than my Letus Helix Jr. It's about as light as you can go if you intend to fly an anamorphic setup. I considered the Atomos Ninja Inferno, but the size and weight, combined with marginal battery life, were all things I felt would hinder the usability of the rig. 2. High quality: The Panasonic 35-100mm offers nice quality and is fast enough within the usable aperture range ( >f4 ) to be a great taking lens when combined with the SLR Magic 40 Compact and a gimbal. A big plus is that all movement is internal. Also the practical zoom range when combined with the 40 Compact is 35-70mm. Beyond that and the image breaks down, while going below yields vignetting. 3. Flexible use: The Feiyutech a2000 can be purchased with both single and dual handle setup. This makes it easy to go ultra compact when required. The handles have a remote built in, so no more fussing with bluetooth. The thing just works... which is what I require when time is short. While the zoom means I can quickly dial in whatever focal lengths I require. And should I need some ultra closeup shots, I can quickly throw on a diopter, without upsetting the whole setup as the motors are powerful enough to make up a minor weight difference and the gimbal automatically calculates the weight change and adapts. 4. To decrease time between takes: All of these things combine to make this setup quick to get into action. It's very none fussy. I just doesn't get in the way of getting the shot.
  7. I'm happy to report that my setup is pretty simple. Which is something I never thought possible for anamorphic shooting. Here's a picture:
  8. The new Feiyutech a2000 was sitting at my door waiting to great me on Friday. I had purchased this gimbal as a replacement of the Zhiyun Crane V2. I had found the Zhiyun to be less than ideal for flying the GH5 with the anamorphic adapter installed. The is largely because when counterbalanced the movement of the camera is more limited. Comparing the two I would say the Feiyutech is better made, and better thought out. It can easily accommodate the larger anamorphic setup and at no point feels overworked. The remote is built into the handlebars, which can be folded for transport. setup is a breeze and minor changes to the balance of the camera do not require rebalancing. It is easy and fast to use. And these are two things I like a lot. Below is some quick footage of the GH5 with SLR Magic 40 Compact anamorphic adapter on the a2000. The taking lens is the 35-100mm f2.8 ver 2, which is quickly becoming my goto lens when shooting anamorphic. Comment welcomed. Enjoy!
  9. That first video does not look particularly "cinematic" to my eyes. Many blown highlights, underexposed subjects and poor framing. I'm going to replace the word "cinematic" with what it really means... "good cinematography", that is to say, shot by someone who understands the art of cinematography... which is defined as the art of making motion pictures. There is no camera setting at normal playback speed that will do this for you. Light you subjects, compose your shots, have purpose to your camera movements. All should support your story. The second video is again mostly all slow motion, save for one scene that last only a couple of seconds. The title is correct... the GH5 can look quite cinematic... but as we have seen demonstrated time and time again... so can a smartphone. But only if the shooter understands the art of cinematography. At this point in the game it's not the cameras that are lacking, it's the users.
  10. Canon could care less what we think. Everyone that has commented on this camera has mentioned wanting 10 bit 422, in a reasonable codec... So what does Canon do... They add another 8 bit option that no one wanted, and no one will use. Great work Canon. Basically this competes with any bit camera. Raw will be used in special conditions only, as most simply have not the time to waste with transcoding it. GH5 is a smarter option for 98% of shooters. Eva1 is an option also, but I'm not convinced it is a significant enough upgrade to justify the $7k price tag. I guess we need to see footage to judge. But keep in mind the GH5 is also getting a 400mb codec soon. So all bets are off.
  11. I'm very happy with it. The anamorphot compact has really added something special to my productions. The tiffen diopters are great to have also.

  13. So he is cropping in? At 25mm I think he would have vignette? Plus his edge sharpness looks pretty clean if not cropped in.
  14. Happy to hear you decided on a kit. Personally, I went through quite a few different combinations before settling on my current setup, so I suspect you might do likewise until you learn what works best for you. Like you I thought the SB would be great for giving my Canon glass a new life, but from my use I noticed that battery life decreased when using adapted lenses. And the added weight negated the mobility argument. In other words I figured this is little different than carrying my Canon. I will tell you for anamorphic the 12-35 is my "go-to "taking lens. At 35mm - ~70mm there is no vignette, and is quite flexible. Past ~70mm the image quality decreases quite a bit. Dual stabilization is great. No mention of the best lens available for the GH5... The Panasonic Leica Nocticron 42.5mm f1.2... that lens is epic. As good if not better than most of the Canon L glass. It's awesome. It will work with the anamorphic adapter also, but is less flexible than the zoom. Finally, the 100-400 is an amazing little lens. I don't own it, but did have a quick play at B&H... Not sure if it's something you would need, but it is a great lens. For flying I find the Helix Jr overkill for the GH5. To that end I recently picked up a Zhiyun Crane V2... And then quickly returned it. It did not play nice with my anamorphic setup. I have the Feiyu a2000 with handles arriving tomorrow, so I will soon know how that flies? It's always fun getting new kit, but it's a process for most of us. Have fun exploring.
  15. Ninety nine percent of these "you can make xyz camera look cinematic" threads are filled with slow motion clips. There is nothing special about making slowmo look cinematic... slowmo is almost always cinematic. The trick is in making normal speed with dialog cinematic. And that requires cinematic techniques... which is of course the point. Cheap and effective way is framing with whatever lens.
  16. If the camera is stationary latency is not going to really be an issue, so one can cut corners and purchase a cheaper monitor. However, if you are moving the camera on a gimbal, slider... Etc, or doing some sort of selfie, like a vlog, then the latency can be problematic. In such as use case, you might be wise to cough up the extra bucks and get a good monitor that does not exhibit latency issues.
  17. Well, perhaps using a "cheap" monitor is the problem. Notice in the nine monitor comparison video that you posted (11.02), the host says that latancy is a problem with lower end monitors. So again I point out, the GH5 with the SmallHD Focus experience no delay/lag. Keep in mind these monitors need to downscale the 4k signal. I suspect this process is what separates the wheat from the chaff.
  18. While I do not use an external recorder with the GH5, I did recently pick up the SmallHD Focus, and I can tell you there is no problem with lag. So perhaps the problem is the external recorder?
  19. It seems so strange that with the otherwise well thought out ergonomics these two items somehow slipped through. I think once a new user gets their bearings, these are the first negatives that come to light.
  20. Today marks about one month since receiving my Panasonic GH5. So after one month of ownership I have the following two issues. First let me state that this is an epic camera for the price, features and build quality. Perhaps the best of this type when focusing on video. However I do have two issues that I wish I could resolve. As it is possible there are options I have overlooked, I thought that I would post these concerns here so I could learn solutions that perhaps exist within the community. Concerns: 1. Shutter Angle dial. Is there a way to lock out the shutter angle dial so that we can stop accidentally rotating it and messing up our recordings? 2. Display button - Pretty much the same request. I constantly hit this button accidentally. While not as critical as rotating the shutter angle button, it is nonetheless an annoyance. Well that's pretty much it. Other than these two complaints the camera is spot on, amazing. So any ideas as to how to fix these two problems? BTW: I will be in NYC this weekend. I plan on stopping by B&H on Sunday. If anyone is in the area maybe we can meet there and say hi.
  21. I feel the c200 is a camera that could have been great, but was designed to fall short in some very important areas. The 1DXMk2 is an epic camera, and if you are doing limited CG, it's a great choice... This is especially true if you are focused mainly on stills. But if the focus is video only, there are better options. I would stay clear of the c200, unless you can handle the heaps of data. I will not recommend a camera I have not seen good amounts of footage and reviews from, so I cannot really recommend the Panasonic EVA1... but I would recommend waiting to see what it brings before parting with $6k+. If stealthily is part of the attraction, forget dedicated video cameras. While the 1DXMk2 does attract attention, it does not attract the kind that requires a permit, so that's a plus. The GH5 is pretty much invisible compared to the 1DXMk2. Zero questions... No "are you a professional" comments... nothing.
