Looks great. He seems to love using Canon glass. That said, there are many current cameras that are good enough to help capture a compelling story. Many are holding out hope for a 1DC Mk2, personally I don't think it will happen. But if it does I hope it is something other than a 1DX Mk2 with a few more bells and whistles for $15k. Rather it should be a whole new animal. I think those expecting 8k will need to look elsewhere in the Canon line-up. Sony, Panasonic or BM are my bets for quasi affordable 8k that most here would consider actually buying.

Perhaps, but with the great image stabilization I do wish it preserved more shadow detail.

E-M1 II for video. It's one thing making a creative choice to crush the blacks, but all I see from this camera is next to no shadow detail. I personally like to have options. Not always does crushed blacks help to drive the story.

Nail it every time? Yeah, sure. Before dismissing the Canon, you should first give it a try. I know of no one that has used this system that has not been impressed with it. Plus the 1DXMkii2 is built like a tank and weather sealed. It will stand up to environments that will destroy an FS5. Also it is stealthier than a traditional video camera. Fyi: I own no STM glass, only L series, and it all works flawlessly. Lastly, glorious Canon colors. Nuff said.

Been running the Lexar 256GB 3600 cards. No issues... Here. The Helix Jr is great. Easily handles the weight of the camera and does not need to be fiddled with every time you change zoom on the lenses. Movement is smooth. I mount my smartphone to the camera or handle to monitor, so I can tap to focus. It's a great package.

I did also... So I bought a maxed out Surface Book. Then I tried to use it to edit some 4k video. After that I packed it neatly back into its box and returned it. The SB is a nice computer, and I much prefer "Hello Windows" to Apple's "Touch ID". But when you buy the Mac you are paying both for hardware and well optimized software. And the latter justifies the price. That said my fully spec'd MBP late 2016 model has been on order since the 15th of November, and it still reads as "Processing" at BHPhoto. Would love it if I had some clue when I might actually receive my unit.

It's a no brainer... You've been on the fence with the 1DXMk2 for quite some time. The 1DXMk2 is not a camera you need to second guess. It is 100% professional and will get the job done. DJI cameras are still a work in progress. Granted I do like the potential of the X5S, but I would wait until the smoke settles before committing to that. Also, flagship Canons do not become obsolete evey six months like Sonys do. So you can be assured of decent resale within the next few years. Plus you already own Canon glass. Trust me, having used the A7RMk2 and A7Mk2 with the Metabones, I can tell you with absolute confidence that Canon glass performs best on a native Canon body. Take the plunge, you will be happy you did.

The image stabilization that the Olympus brings makes it a interesting option for when larger cameras are inconvenient, but you still require something that can work in less than ideal weather conditions. I would be curious to read a detailed review of this camera. You might also look into doing a review of the new DJI offerings. They seem to be innovating in ways the old guard are not.

The 1DXM2 is not bad as far as DR, but it is 8 bit. You will not have the latitude of a cinema camera. Shadow recovery is better than most comparable cameras of this format. However, for run and gun the flexibility of the 1DXMk2 will be a smarter choice for most shooters.

Yes, this video is pretty representative of what the 1DXMk2 does. It's not that hard to get some great stuff out of this camera. Once you have it you really can focus on producing work and forget about endlessly upgrading to the newly hyped this or that. The 1DXMk2 frees you to concentrate you efforts on the art of storytelling and take a break from the tech. I often look at images that I capture with this thing and marvel at their beauty. So far the 1DXMk2 is my favorite camera. I prefer it to all that I have owned or used (AJA, BM, Panie, Sony and other Canons). It is the best compromise of performance, size, form-factor, durability, versatility, low-light usability, battery life, stealthiness, weather resistance. I have not experienced a single instance of buyers remorse. Not to say that it is prefect... nothing is. But it is a good balance of features. And the DPAF is a true game-changer.

Indeed, the 1DXMk2 gave me a reason to stop chasing better and newer cameras. I figure if I can't tell my story with the Canon, then a Red would not help either. It's a great and versatile tool.

I wonder if the dual cameras in a smartphone could be combined to create an anamorphic image. That's something I would love to see in a small format. Still nothing easy for DSLRs. Really a shame.

No, I have yet to find one that I can live with size and weight wise. Have been kicking around the idea of the moondog labs 37mm adapter. But that means a bigger beefier gimbal. So for now I'm just letterboxing it. And yes, I know it's not the same thing... Believe me, I know. But how do you keep it small and light, with single focus, and anamorphic? Better still, how can I keep the brilliant 1DXMk2 DPAF and still do anamorphic?

Recently, I had the opportunity to play around with the DJI Osmo Mobile. I used it with a Google Pixel XL. I also took some shots with the Canon 1DXMk2. Both cameras have their strengths. But the Canon fitted with the 100-400mm F4 was too big and heavy to fly. Not because the Letus Helix Jr could not manage it, but with that kind of payload the rig is too heavy to reasonably hold for any length of time. The Osmo Mobile, by contrast was refreshingly light. So there is a trade-off of quality vs maneuverability. In the end I decided to just forgo the Helix and hand hold the Canon. Indoors without lighting the smartphone is, well... not great. But I wonder if it can in some circumstances be a better tool to tell a story? Below are some quick intros to a horror idea that I shot with both. Just having fun. Thoughts welcomed. You must set PP to create proxy files via the injest settings. Otherwise working with these large files is simply not doable.

I'm liking how this seems to be shaping up. Would love a pro osmo for handheld work. The video finally looks good enough to really consider. Would like to see Canon style DPAF on this. This camera has the potential to be a true game changer.

Love the Canon 1DXMkII. Anyone that doesn't love this thing has probably never spent time with it. Check out these shots from my website (mostly 1DXMkII and a few Sony shots). This thing is simply amazing. Video in 4k looks great. Granted not as much dynamic range as a dedicated cinema camera, but better low-light performance, and built like a tank. Plus you can take it places without need of a permit. Blows away my A7RII. And I'm happy it's E-mount. Why not? It is first and foremost a stills camera. Many a pro has used this camera with great results. If you can't get great results with this... Well, maybe what needs upgraded isn't the camera, but your skill set. Andrew, happy to have you aboard. As noted, with this camera you can spend time worrying about content... not worrying about getting the next model. Canon doesn't pop a new model of their flagship cameras out every other week. For stabilizing, use the Letus Helix Jr, a jib, or a slider. Hand hold with a shoulder rig. All work fine. The 1DXMKII is the real deal. A proper professional tool that should serve it's owner well for years to come. DBOUNCE APPROVED!
