I think the stabilization is miles ahead of everything else.
-
How is this 4k@60p?
-
Pulled from YouTube. I don't think the phone is officially released yet.
-
It's the first of many. I would still put it on a gimbal. Let's keep in mind, this guy is just walking with the phone. He is clearly not making any effort to steady it. As more videos become available we will learn how effective this type of stabilization can be. I am certain electronic stabilization will replace optical in the future. There are set limits on the range of motion allowed by a mechanical in camera stabilization.

Google worked closely with Qualcomm on the pixel. The EIS uses the gyroscopes to adjust for shake. It is supposed to be very good indeed and is said to be free of the artifacts that are common in other EIS systems. I believe this Tech is similar to what we see from SteadXP. Below is the first footage from the pixel using this technology: Also notice that HDR is enabled by default so we have the blacks of the tires exposed correctly while the sky also retains detail.

Yeah, I'm properly blown away by this.

So I've been looking into the new Google pixel smartphones, and I came across this video. IMO, this camera would appear to be far superior to any other smartphone to date. I might even go as far as to call it cinematic. If this video is in fact the real deal then I can see why dxomarks rated it as the best smartphone camera that they have ever tested. What do you guys think?

It saw enough 4k use during the Olympics. So I would say it's probably good enough.
-
The sensor is the same in both the mavic and p4, so other than focal length and processing everything else should be the same.
-
Indeed, you should run right out and snap up a a6300. It's the best camera in the world. I know I'll be selling my 1DXMkii to get one or maybe just stop worrying about charts and look at some real world results?
-
The result will be vomit. Moving a 360 camera is actually advised against be oculus.
-
That camera looks out of focus and probably needs autofocus microadjustment performed. FYI, I cannot recall ever looking at my 1DXMkii 4k footage and feeling it lacked anything in the image department. And I have compared it directly to my Sony A7Rii, Sony A7ii and Samsung NX1. To my eyes it handily beats all of those cameras. I have seen some nice looking footage from the 5DMkIV. But this footage in the video link you list looks off. I'm guessing it's related to the body he has, not all 5DMkIVs.

No!

Tilta Gravity G1 gimbal for up to 5 lbs.

That thing will burn out your wrist in record time. Then all your footage will look look crap as your hand will be trembling. -
To my eyes the remote monitoring via smartphone or tablet works well enough. There is some lag, but it's workable. I also like grading. It's just that I am considering ways to speed up the workflow. Canon colors look pretty dam good, so unless I am looking for something highly stylized I might be able to use baked in colors 80% of the time. It really comes down to time. I'm looking to start trying my hand at some pro shooting. But the business end of things is leading me to start to think about ways to decrease turn around time.

Have not used the SmallHD monitor, opted instead to just purchase the wireless adapter as you can control focus pulls remotely with the app. As for how far you can push the footage... it's pretty good. Not as flexible as a high-end dedicated cinema camera, but much more flexible than the Sony Alpha cameras. The MJpeg files can be pushed to well beyond where the Sonys images fall apart. However, after grading the Terra footage, I can tell you it does fall short of that level of flexibility. Granted, the 1DXMkII has strengths that dedicated cinema cameras do not. Low-light is better, autofocus, etc... You can't have it all. Not it one body anyway. I have not used Andrew's C-log profile yet, or James Millers DELUT version. To this point I am wondering how you and others here might feel about the idea of using baked in picture profiles that are created to closely match the look that you are hoping to achieve for your projects. I am thinking this might be a better way to work with an 8 bit image. Here is one such profile that I'm thinking of experimenting with: I predicted a long time ago that you would get this camera. To be fair, while not perfect... and while Canon did leave out a few goodies. It is the best hybird DSLR available as of this writing. Welcome back!

I heard it doesn't work with phablets.
-
There's is a recall for the battery issue. And the image will be better on the new ones also. And since the S7 also has the same camera it's also superior to the new iPhone.

Nothing to see here...

Would not buying something denote a budget? Or was the plan to steal gear... or maybe the title needs changed. I wonder if other groups have these "no budget" threads. Hmmm... no budget automotive repair... no budget electrical service... no budget cruises? If there really is no budget, there really is no project.

This is a cool trick. Would be nice to have on the 1DX Mkii in 4k mode.
-
Worst still, the Sony footage cannot be pushed anywhere near as much in post without turning to mush.
-
Point taken... Yes I was being lazy. So here are some heavy handed grades to see how far this footage can be pushed before it crys like a little baby. And I can tell you it seems to hold up pretty dam good. Lots of room to get some crazy color grades and it keeps it's cool. This footage is definitely more robust in post than anything from a DSLR. I would love to get my hands on one to see how it handles in the field.

Say what you will, but do you notice that while the Canon clearly show more noise at 12800, the GH4 and A7Rii images start to turn to mush. I find this harder to work with than noise. Here is a frame grab from 3:45 in the Tony Northrup video. And food for thought... was Samsung's camera tech really that far superior to everyone else. I guess it was judging my TN's comments. He said he believe no camera manufacturers can make a sensor that can scale that's why they need to crop. But did not the Samsung NX1 downscale from 6k to 4k? I really had high hopes for an NX2. Samsung was our best hope at getting 10 bit 6k in a DSLR form factor that would have good battery life, that would not overheat and would record to cheap media with full connectivity, good ergonomics and a touch screen with a modern interface. So sorry to see them go. That said, the Canon still looks better to my eyes. Granted I'm not wild about the crop factor. And noise is certainly worst than on the 1DX Mkii.
