  1. I know that when I compare my current smartphone to my old point n' shoot from a few years ago, the smartphone wins hands down. So I agree with what's been said. The need to fit better cameras into a small form factor and to improve image stabilization will yield benefits for both DSLRs and dedicated video cameras. That said, I just priced out a Red Weapon. Then I looked at some footage... should not have looked at the footage.
  2. After reviewing my footage I had a startling revelation... apparently, the correct exposure for a night video according to smartphone manufacturers is the same as for daytime. Night must look like day. I think this was part of the fascination with the A7s. The idea that it could make night look like day. Personally, if I wanted night to look like day, I think I would rather just shoot during the day. When I shoot at night it's because I want the look of night. So what do you think of the current mobile tech?
  3. Got bored, so I decided to do a quick comparo of the best smartphone camera tech vs the best DSLR hybrid camera tech. This battle pits the mighty Samsung Galaxy Note 7 up against Canon's flagship DSLR the 1DX MkII. This is a low light test that highlights the benefits of using the Note 7's "Pro mode" rather than relying on the default auto setting. I then show the same shots captured with the 1DX Mkii for reference. Check it out to see how the current heavyweights compare.
  4. Seems most here are convinced that FF on the A7Rii is garbage. Yet I thought the difference in iq was marginal when compared to the aps-c mode. So much so that it was my preferred shooting mode 90% of the time.
  5. I've never seen this microphone. Interesting. It's funny you mentioned the mic, we switched in the second video to voice over... the movement was causing noise. We also added the Sennheiser MKE2 AVX, for the talking scenes, which seems much cleaner than the Sony UWP-D11. Perhaps the biggest improvement we saw in audio was getting new noise cancelling headphones for monitor. Now I only hear what the microphone picks up. Anything that is polluting the input is immediately obvious. It's made a huge difference. As for the GH5, I'll have to see what it brings. I know many have high hopes for that camera. But then again many had high hopes for the 5DMKIV also. There are no official specs yet, so only time will tell. I would love for it to be amazing. Flying the 1DXMII is murderous on the back.
  6. So focus is worst? SlowMo is worst? Rolling shutter worst? Across the board? Really? Or did you board run into a log... a c-log that is?
  7. I like it... Good work. This is what it's really about.
  8. Sure thing! That Sony is killing me though. I had planned to replace it with the 5DMkIV, but Canon went all "Canon" on it with that crazy crop. Not sure what to replace it with now. Maybe pickup a 1DC for cheap and use it as a b-cam? Or just shoot everything with one camera?
  9. And they frankly trump c-log... but really, why can't they just add it to the 1DX Mkii. That alone would seal the deal for most here. As for image quality, it's a wash. Both camera have great IQ imo.
  10. GH4 looks pretty good in these shot. I think your angle sells it. Funny you mentioned the diffusers.... right after reviewing the raw footage we had the same thought. Below is a frame grab from the second episode that I am currently editing. The lighting is completely different as is the setting. I might move the subject a little closer to the wall next time around to get some back-lighting, or use a reflector to bounce some light from behind. I think the softer light is more complementary. And don't worry about not being an expert.... I'm here to learn also, and I value all constructive input.
  11. Yeah, delays are to be expected, but I have not forgotten the black sun incident... didn't they just throw in the towel on that one? Or the magenta cast issue. BM is why I'm holding off on any purchase of the Terra until the reviews are in. I need real user feedback before I'm convinced. I done with being a guinea pig.
  12. Nice work!. Good angle and nice colors. Simple, but easy to follow. My problem is I like dynamic footage, so tend to shoot and edit that way. I think I'll start by filming the entire sequence stationary and then inter-cut the more dynamic shoots. BTW: Did you use two cameras? I used the Sony A7ii as a B-cam, and I won't lie, it was a b!tch to match colors. That problem has been plaguing me.
  13. Are you sure? http://www.newsshooter.com/2016/07/01/canon-drops-price-of-the-c300-mkii-dealers-offering-as-much-4000us-off/
  14. Very true. It's easy to get caught up in gear. My current camera is not perfect, but I know it's good enough to help me to tell a story, because others have done so. Like you, I realize, if I fail, in the end I can only blame myself. I'm forcing myself to shoot more. And while it's scary to put your work out there, at risk of harsh judgement, it's the only way to learn if it's any good. Personally, I've turned my attention to learning filming techniques and editing... getting better at the art of film. The gear is now secondary.
  15. Good advice. I think you're right about wider shots. Second fill light? For the introduction?
  16. Or the could just push a firmware update to the 1DX MKII to give it the missing pieces. Although not sure about the 10 bit part. Maybe doable for 1080p. And please, why must 1080p mode be low quality?
  17. Of course I see the iq of the pocket... I owned two of them. But they are not the best to work with. If you were so convinced, why did you sell? Or have you now forgotten all that was wrong with the BMs? How about that low-light Performance? Remember the fantastic audio quality? Loved the image stabilization?... Exactly! And that's just the pocket. Not to say you can't get great results. But you will work harder for them... a lot harder. And for the most part, any notion of "pocket friendly" is unrealistic in most cases. But nowhere did I knock the image quality. Granted, on that note, the image from the BMs are generally more understated, at least I wouldn't call them punchy, quite cinematic though... and great motion cadence.
  18. Protecting what? It's my understanding that the C300 Mkii is petty much a flop. That most opt for the Sony FS7 over it. And as we all know... if you want a DSLR form factor there are reasons for wanting that. Only someone with no clue about what they intended to use the camera for would cross shop a DSLR with a full blown video camera. The larger camera is convenient for larger productions, but is totally unsuitable for run and gun. So there is no protection needed.
  19. I just wish that they would do a proper firmware update to the 1DX MKii. One that would add the glaringly omitted features (sensible file sizes, peaking, zebras, c-log). Those easy additions would sell the 1DX Mkii to everyone that's been on the fence. But that said they might feel that the 1DX Mkii is already selling well enough.
  20. BM does offer bang for buck. But there are many issues with their cameras. Some might say the pocket cannot be compared to DSLRs, yet this is exactly the market it competes in. So yes, it can be compared... and indeed is compared, due to its form factor. And in that context it's shortcomings put it at a disadvantage. There is lots of potential for BM, but that potential can go either way. The Ursa Mini 4.6k launch was a nightmare. I still keep an eye on BM, but will hold off from buying anymore of their cameras until they become more established as a reliable camera brand. To my mind, the most interesting newcomer is Kinfinity, but I need to see more, and learn more about them before dropping any coin. If it's perfect for what you do you're set. Have fun shooting, and post some work!
  21. And with the 1DX Mi Canon demonstrated they could bring the 1DC to market for half the amount that they did. Both cameras are essentially the same and employ the exact same sensor. The 1DC's circuit board adds a headphone jack, heat sink... there is also a slight difference to the firmware. ChaChing! Mark my words, if there is a 1DC Mkii (and I doubt there will be) it will tip the scale at the $12-14K mark.
  22. The 1DC is a great camera. If I were in your place I would keep it and get my monies worth by using the heck out of it. But that said the 1DX Mkii is also great. Granted, the file sizes are nuts for 2016. But there aren't any other cameras in this format that can deliver the colors and dependability of the Canons. These things are tanks! Honestly, if they do not fit the bill you might need to look into a dedicated cinema camera. Blackmagic, Red or the long shot Kinefinity (still on my radar... cautiously). In any case, you have a great camera, shoot something. It will get you excited about it again.
  23. Here's some stuff I shot using the Canon 1DX MkII and the Sony A7ii as B-cam. I'm certain there are a million mistakes, and warp stabilizer is not the best. But then again, I'm no pro so you might have better luck with it. Overall I love the 1DX MkII... though it's not perfect. Interested to hear some feedback. Also used the Letus Helix Jr . This is the first stuff that I have shot so I'm open to constructive advice.
