I sense log will soon be an option for the 1DX Mkii
-
This had been my experience with the 1DX Mkii also. It is quite good in low light. And cleaner than the Sony A7R2 with same lens at equivalent ISOs. I cannot speak to the A7S2, as I have not used that camera. But for filmmaking purposes the 1DXMkii is more than usable in less than ideal lighting conditions.

Should I buy this BM Micro Kit or forget about it and buy Samsung NX1
DBounce replied to Shepard HS's topic in Cameras
Well the two videos previously posted demonstrate it adequately. But honestly virtually everything I shot with it exhibited this trait. Can you post some examples where the blacks have details in the shadows? In my experience black detail is only preserved in very light shadows. -
I'm interested in the shooting experience. Also looking forward to seeing your footage. Sounds like you're gonna be having some shooting fun over the next few days. Enjoy!

The one deal-breaker for the NX1 (in addition to the fact that it is a dead system) is the crushed blacks that are present in every scene without direct sunlight hitting the black surfaces. Virtually everything in the shadows is crushed. -
My initial thought was a classic film look. Trying to keep it cinematic and organic. It's a pretty heavy grade, I wanted to see how much I could get away with. Happy that there is still detail in the blacks. I'm liking this codec a lot. I can see the argument for more reds. Might have been heavy handed with the greens. I think it came off a bit too vintage when I tried it warmer.

Shot this with the Prolost Flat profile that I recently discovered. This is using a Kodak 5201 Vision 50D film emulation. What do you folks think?

For the record PayPal is accepted in Egypt... Here's a list of the 202 countries where PayPal is accepted. So someone claiming it is not accepted where it clearly is should raise a red flag.

Very sad, I also had come to respect Ebrahim.

By all accounts the 1DX MkII represents Canons best senor to date.

I think you might get pretty close to that look with a single light and something to bounce off. The harsh shadows are from shaping the light. That said, harsh shadows might not be ideal for female subjects unless artfully done. It's easy to make the subject look intense... but that may not be flattering. Experiment and have fun.

This is why I ended up picking the 1DX Mkii. Loved the idea of Blackmagic, but not the implementation. Was never sold on the Sony look. The 1DX MkII pretty much checks all your boxes, and in a relatively small footprint that I can fly on my Gimbal, use on my jib or slider. It's also good handheld or with a monopod. If you are use to the 5DMkII it should be pretty easy to work with.

I don't dislike your lighting, but I don't think this is the same or even particularly close to the first picture you posted. The first picture is much more moody with harsher shadows. A completely different vibe imo.

Aputure Light storm. Bright, affordable, well made and comes with radio remote control. Love them. But if you need round, roto lights.

DJI X5R (4K RAW) + Osmo + Inspire 1... anybody else with the same idea?

Awesome. It will be interesting hearing how you like it. -

I'm no expert in this matter, but I can tell you how I perceive motion cadence. Most video cameras have a video like movement to the images they produce. The difference is similar to what is experienced when the frame rate is set to 30p vs 24p. But it's more than just frame rate. It also appears to have to do with shutter angle or shutter speed. The subtle differences in shutter speed can lead to a more video like motion cadence also. In all honesty, it is hard to describe, but fairly easy to spot when something is not right.

Very interesting, the comments about snappier and more contrasty are food for thought. How about recommendations as to good value in an matte box. And opinions on 4x4 vs 4x5.65? Any advise on ND filter brands?
-
Recently, I have been exploring the pros of using a matte box. I like the idea of dedicated NDs and flags to control glare. But for as simple as a device as a matter box, is there seems to be a huge variance in price. So my questions are as follows: 1. It's a matte box needed at all? 2. Given the huge range in price, what is good enough? 3. Do flags matter in a controlled studio? 4. Are dedicated NDs really that much of an advantage over variable NDs? Feel free to share your knowledge or experience.

So which camera goes up in value after being on the market for two years? Welcome to the real world.

It's a business, they all do this... Apple, Ford... everyone. Bodies are not investments in hardware, they are investments in your talent. If you want a healthy return on that investment you need to produce paying work.

I already did. Go to the link below. What I can't recall is if I mentioned in that thread how much more robust the Canon files are. I had much more room to grade with the Canon, whereas the Sony files just turned to mush. Granted I have seen cameras that were even more flexible when grading, but not with the feature-set and iso performance that the Canon offers. All around the Canon is well balanced and never feels anything less than Pro. Even in stills mode the Canon looked better at high ISOs. When noise was present, it looked organic, while the Sony image was covered in the usual green pink multicolored speckles that ruin shots. The only edge I give the Sony was pure resolution. And in good lighting the Sony can deliver great stills. Comparing the video quality is pointless. The Sony always looks video, no matter lighting, camera motion, audio... there's just no getting away from it. Where the Canon can look very cinematic, with pleasing motion cadence and great colors. Different leagues. The Canon may cost double, but even then, it punches way above its weight class. I've finally stopped looking for cameras. I now have a tool I can work with. I've turned my attention to the craft and creating the look. Ordered gels, canned haze, and some soft boxes. Recently got a jib, and I'm loving that thing... Although I need practice. The 1DX MkII is squared away. No more blaming the camera. Now I have to bring my A-game to deliver the results.
-
Really I could care less about the numbers. My 1DX Mkii blows my Sony A7Rii out of the water... period. In every respect it's in another league. Anyone that doubts this just needs to do a back to back test of both cameras. And if you haven't done a side by side comparison, don't bother chiming in, you simply cannot appreciate the difference until you see them both head to head.

Canon 80D would work pretty well for this application, assuming you do not need 4k. The 80D does not suffer from the rolling shutter problem that will make your shots pretty much unusable should you go the Sony route. What this video to get an idea of what I'm talking about.

I pull the battery, hold down the power button for 5 seconds, then reinsert the battery and turn it on. It seemed to work to clear up miscellaneous errors.
